What do shepherd huts, the Olympic rings and
London’s Westend theatre district all have in common?
-An innovative builder named Dicky Deans.
Dicky has led an extraordinary life, which started with
fixing dents in cars as a welder. But the adventurous
side soon took over, and he went to Australia and
travelled for a year. Upon his return to the UK,
he was asked if he could weld, and that led to building
sets for theatre in London’s Westend. He built
sets for ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,’ ‘Hamlet’ and
also made Christmas decorations for Harrods.
In 2012 he was lucky enough to be asked to help
build the Olympic rings for the 2012 Olympics
held in London! Dicky is philosophical about all
this however, and just feels he was in the right
place at the right time to work on this
important project.
04
“I was just one of the welders that helped to build the
steel structures for the rings. There’s not many jobs
that you work on, where the whole world gets to see
your work.”
Several years ago, Dicky and his wife moved out to the
country, and found the fascinating, old shepherd huts
beautiful. This was the beginning of his recreating
05
these historic dwellings. Originally, he built them
as flat packs that could be shipped and assembled
on site, drawing on the principles of his background
in theatre set building. He still makes this option
available to clients, but has moved away from
the flats packs, since he can easily move or
ship the huts to almost any location across
mainland Europe.
06
07
“The recent exodus from
the cities to the country
has also led people to
look at living spaces in
a different way”
It takes him about three months to complete
a shepherds hut build. The huts can be kitted out
with kitchens, baths, beds and electricity. He has
a team of skilled craftsmen that work on them.
With more people working from home, there are more
people ordering the huts as a work space or studio.
Others have ordered them for holiday homes, and Dicky
has just completed the unique “Horseshoe Shepherds
Hut” which connects two shepherds huts together
with a central pod, featuring a separate kitchen and
open plan living room, shower room and separate
bedroom and office.
The shepherd huts can add extra living space
for extended family, and although they are not
road-towable, they can be moved on a trailer for
occasional relocation.
08
09
The huts themselves are finished to a high standard,
and sometimes with recycled pieces that are
one-of-a-kind. A lovely, antique chest might be
transformed into a bit of kitchen cabinetry.
These unique pieces give a special element to the
design, and are a great way of recycling. Where possible
Dicky believes in using locally sourced materials.
The high-quality craftsmanship found in Dicky’s
shepherds huts creates beautiful stylish living
spaces with bespoke interiors.

Huts Ltd.
The shepherds huts can be off-grid for rural locations
and can include solar power, compost toilets and cosy
log burners to make an eco-friendly place to stay.

The Roe
and the Red
Of the six different types of deer in the UK,
only two are native Brits, the Roe and the Red deer.
These deer have roamed the hillsides of Great Britain
since ancient times, and their meat often graced the
tables of medieval kings.
The Roe have a lovely coat of deep auburn, which
turns greyish in the winter months. Unusually, they do
not have tails, and their antlers only grow to include
three rather small prongs. Light, quick and agile,
they usually stand no more than three-quarters of
a metre tall when full grown. Their soulful black eyes
can melt the heart! You will most likely find them
in the forests throughout the British Isles, with the
exception of Northern Ireland.
The Red deer are a bit more flamboyant than their Roe
cousins, with a showy rack of antlers that can span
13
a metre in width. They’re also the largest land
mammal in Great Britain. Their coats are more of
a reddish brown in the warmer months, with it
fading to a greyish brown in winter. They too prefer
woodland forests, especially in Scotland, but they
are also frequently seen in the Pennines of northern
England. Only about 500 are thought to make their
home in Wales.
Both populations are doing well in Great Britain
and have remained relatively stable in numbers for
the last 10 years. They are an ongoing study in how
man and animal must learn to live together, as they
have increasingly ventured into more urban areas.
The British Deer Society has a wealth of information
on all deer species of Britain, and help to manage the
populations with the best outcome for all. Visit their
site at www.bds.org.uk
