An insider tip for outdoor enthusiasts:
THE SOČ A VALLEY.
A paradise for whitewater rafters, hikers and fans of all other outdoor sports // Writer
and mountain climber Julius Kugy once described the Soča as the most beautiful
river in Europe. Naturally, as rafters, we want to find out for ourselves so we
dive headfirst into another adventure. After all, the Ötz Valley and the Imster
Canyon are not the only rafting destinations in the world!
After looking at pictures of the area on the Internet, experiencing it live is a
totally different kettle of fish. Even the colour of the Soč a is unique with its
headwaters shimmering in every emerald tone possible! The whitewater rushes
out through small rocky canyons across bedrock into deep pools, spreading
across light gravel beds before forcefully crashing into the next gorge.
The Soč a offers everything a whitewater enthusiast could dream of. Before we
start off on our tour, we want to gain a first impression of the river. Is there
any better way of doing this than by taking a hike along the Soč a trail? It’s an
approximately 20 km hike along the banks of the river, which can be completed
in one day.
INTERESTING FACTS.
CAMPSITE // Directly at the exit of the second and most picturesque gorge, you’ll
find Camp Soč a, the large natural campsite.
APARTMENTS // On a hidden elevated plain is the hotel village of Pristava Lepena
where you can stay at one of the small traditional Trenta-style houses:
Tip 1 // Along Europe’s most beautiful river:
THE SOČ A TRAIL.
Our tour begins at the source of the Soč a // We are up and about relatively early
as we don’t just want to hike, but also capture the area’s beauty on camera. We
begin our tour at the exit of the Vršič pass and soon discover that October is the
perfect time of year. The autumnal foliage is beautiful and provides an excellent
backdrop for our pictures. We also notice that there are not many hikers on this
trail so we are pretty much alone. Even better!
Again and again we use suspension bridges to cross the Soč a. Slowly, the river
turns from a small creek into a river. It runs through tight gorges and sun-drenched
beds of gravel. Especially in the lower gorges, we are able to get really close to
the beautiful Soč a. The crystal-clear, turquoise-coloured water is simply wonderful!
At around noon we can no longer hold back and jump into the icy cold water
wearing nothing but our birthday suits. Our “pool” is in a particularly beautiful
location: at the exit of the Velika Korita gorge, shortly before the Lepenjica estuary.

Maybe we should have put on our swimming trunks // Just as we are about to come
out of the water, a group of curious onlookers exits their tour bus, cameras at the
ready. But it was probably more embarrassing for the tourists than it was for us.
On we go! Refreshed and fully clothed we hike through the angled third gorge
with a “bobsled run” at the exit. Tomorrow we want to take a rafting tour in the
passage located behind this gorge. But we’ve done more than enough for today:
we’ve been hiking for eight hours so now it’s time for something to eat. Our
stomachs are rumbling! We decide to take a detour to the Hedvika restaurant in
Kal Karitnica because we are craving freshly caught Soč a trout. We are served
three excellent fish in almond butter and a refreshing Lasko Club beer.
WE CAN NO LONGER RESIST THE TEMPTATION
AND JUMP INTO THE FREEZING COLD WATER.
The largest and most spectacular part of the Soč a Trail lies behind us. On the
terrace of the cosy Gostišč e, we enjoy the wonderful October sun and then slowly
continue on our journey. After the Koritnica estuary, it’s not much further to the
bridge towards Č ezsoč a. From there, we follow a road to Bovec, our final destination
for today. Soč a, we’ll be back – tomorrow!
Tip 2 // A must-see for every whitewater fan:
RAFTING ON THE SOČ A.
18 km of whitewater in unspoilt nature // This is something we definitely don’t want
to miss. We rent the equipment in Bovec from Goran, an experienced white water
specialist from Soč a Rafting. There’s nothing stopping us now.
Of course, experiencing nature is first on our list, but that doesn’t mean we don’t
want to have some whitewater fun. Our rafting tour begins after the third gorge.
The Zmuklica embarking station has a cable car and is located upriver behind the
bridge over the Koritnica. The trip gets off to a great start: with grade 3 rapids
and ten out of ten for the stunning landscape! After Č ezsoč a, the Soč a turns into
a fast-flowing river. Shortly afterwards we see the wonderful Boka waterfall that
crashes out of the middle of a cliff from the Kanin mountains.
THE TRIP GETS OFF TO A GREAT START: WITH GRADE 3 RA PIDS
AND TEN OUT OF TEN FOR THE STUNNING LANDSCAPE!
In the late afternoon, we pitch our tents on a spacious gravel bed. We still have
one big tin of goulash, but after eating delicious trout the day before, nobody is in
the mood for tinned food. Didn’t we just spot a few fishermen down by the river?
Steffi uses her charm to our advantage and actually manages to return with three
huge trout. We set up a campfire and cook the fish on sticks. The perfect way to
keep our energy levels up for tomorrow’s challenge.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR THE SOČ A VALLEY.
CANYONING // Aside from rafting and kayaking, canyoning is one of the most important whitewater sports in the
valley of countless waterfalls. Guided tours are offered by, for example, Goran from Soča Rafting: www.socarafting.si
MOUNTAIN BIKING // At Mt. Kanin there are single trains, longer tours and downhill runs for mountain bikers, and
you can also transport your bike in the gondola: www.kanin.si. Discover detailed information and a new mountain
bike guide online at: www.mtb-slowenien.de
FLYING // The Soča Valley also offers excellent conditions for paragliding. A scenic flight in a sporting aircraft is
also just as impressive. After our tour we took in a bird’s eye view of the Triglav National Park and were able to
enjoy it twice as much: www.janezlet.si
SKIING & SNOWBOARDING // We can particularly recommend Mt. Kanin in March when the ski lift is covered in snow
and the valley has a green glow in the springtime sun. Attention all free riders: this mountain has deep crevices and
trenches. Those looking for different variations would be better off consulting a local guide.
The absolute highlight is still to come: the 4-person slalom run // We leave our tents
where they are and begin the more physically demanding stage at around noon.
The water runs through the boulders. Small steps, swirling currents and whirlpools
turn the trip into a wild water ride. In October the water level is relatively
low. We don’t want to imagine what we’d be faced with if we came during the
thawing period!
We see the jetty and it signals the beginning of the slalom run. Up until this point,
we’d had everything under control. The last 800 metres are actually not suitable
for rafts, but with a small boat we can defy Mother Nature. Let’s try it! However,
first we want to check out the stretch on foot. For this purpose there is an excellent
path that runs along the banks of the river. The ravine gets smaller, the blockage
increases, the steps and reflux become more dangerous. Leftover concrete from a
blown-up bridge mark the exit that we cannot afford to miss. The passage after
this point is only safe for professional kayakers.
But we still need to be careful on the slalom run: there are siphons everywhere!
Only experienced rafters should dare to take to the water. After our thorough
check, the rest of the trip transpires without any hitches. Only when getting out
of the raft, Daniel slips and falls out. The rest of us see it as capsizing. And the
rule is: anyone who capsizes has to pay for a round of beers that evening. But if
you fall out of the raft when getting out, you have to pay for two rounds! While
enjoying our free beers later on we relive the rafting trip and decide to take a
kayak course in the valley next year. Once you’ve experienced Soč a, you’ll want
to keep coming back for more!
Alaska Family DLX – the new two-room apartment tent // Perfect for families or small
groups needing space while on holiday.
Read more on the new Alaska Family DLX on page 94.
For every tour you need
A successful tour also depends on the selection of the right tent // The tent experts at
TATONKA know this and have developed the perfect tent for each challenge – from
small and light to big and comfortable.
Outdoor enthusiasts who want to pack everything into their rucksacks pay more
attention to the weight of the tent and less to the space. For example, Kiruna,
from the TATONKA Highend line, is perfectly suited for this because it weighs in at
only 2.25 kg. Travelling with children or friends means having extra space along
in your luggage – just like the tunnel tent Alaska Family DLX which can be
divided into two separate sleeping areas and offers room for up to six people.
In warm or hot climates, optimal ventilation is paramount. For this reason, the
Alaska 3 Vent tunnel tent enables you to roll up both outer tent sides and attach
them at two different heights.
The selection is large, making the right decision isn’t. If you have any questions,
our consultants in your specialist outdoor shop will be happy to help you at any
time so that you will always be sure to have the right roof over your head.

The detailed Tent ABC with numerous tips, tricks and professional care suggestions
www.tatonka.com
Guy ropes // Guy ropes help to make your tent stable when it’s blowing a gale and raining cats and dogs. The advantage of TATONKA
tents is that they have a roll-up system for guy ropes, which makes taking them down a lot easier and prevents knots. For better
visibility in the dark the ropes have reflective sleeves.
Porch // The porch is the storage space for luggage in the tent between the inner tent and the entrance. A clean and dry storage
space for everything that you don’t need inside the inner tent.
Entrances // TATONKA inner tent entrances are wide and simple to use. Mosquito windows that can be closed separately and
easily with one hand are basic features. When the tent is open the entrance section can be stowed away in the side pocket
or rolled up and secured.
Tent rods // What counts here is the highest quality. TATONKA uses YUNAN tent rods, since this manufacturer pays as much
attention to high quality as they do to sustainable manufacturing processes. YUNAN supplies tent rods in two different
aluminium alloys, which are used depending on the type of tent. Both are virtually break-proof, hollow, attached with a rubber
band and in this way can be easily connected to each other.
Tent pegs // There are different tent pegs for different types of ground. Our tents come with standard pegs. You can purchase
special tent pegs for particularly sandy, hard or stony ground, or even snow.
Vents // Vents are covered openings in the outer skin of the tent, which provide air circulation. They are separately tensioned
and waterproof. Thanks to a stiff fabric band TATONKA vents can be positioned easily, even after intense use. Mosquito windows
and tension points are standard features on our tents; vents that can be closed from the inside are available exclusively in our
Highend collection.
Product care // Please ensure that your tent is completely dry when storing. This will help in avoiding damages to the coating.
Tents should be washed by hand and never in the washing machine. Erecting the tent in a shady location and using ground
sheets help protect your material on your tours.
Pockets // Pockets offer storage space and help you to keep your tent tidy. Side pockets at head height (when lying down) are
perfect for storing items such as spectacles. Almost all of our tents with porch have an additional detachable porch pocket
and a roof pocket for sunglasses, insect spray or other odds and ends.
Ground sheets // Ground sheets protect the base of the tent from damages caused by stones, branches, etc., and also fend off
cold and wetness for a long time. The ground sheet should not be bigger than the guyed outer tent, to avoid funnel effects.
Porch ground sheets make the porch a clean and dry storage space, even when the weather is bad and the ground is damp.
UV radiation // Tent materials, especially the outer fabric, are subject to an ageing process and lose their resistance over time.
The main cause of this is UV radiation. Tents with silicone coating are far more resistant than those with PU coating. So it’s
best to choose a shady spot to pitch up your tent to avoid any risks.
Waterproof // No tent is 100 per cent waterproof, since water seeps through connecting points, seams and zip fasteners. However,
these areas also allow water to escape to the outside – which is an important consideration in the overall condensation
process.
Water column // The water column is a measure of how high the water pressure can be before the fabric lets in moisture. According
to DIN, a value of 1 500 mm is classified as waterproof. But a water column measurement is not always a sign of quality. The outer
tents of our Highend series with 1 500 mm have a much lower water column than our all-round tents (8 000 mm) – but their special
coating means that drops of water drip off immediately and therefore guarantees a 100 % watertight surface. TATONKA ground sheets
have a water column of 10 000 mm (all-round) or 8 000 mm (Highend).

TATONKA Tents
IN FORM AND FUNCTION
Dome and geodesic tents are self-carrying tents whose form is created by arched
tent rods that cross at one or more points. This design has a high degree of builtin
stability during storms or when carrying the weight of snow. Because of the
smaller base area in comparison to tunnel tents, domes are perfect for tours in
rocky or mountainous areas as well as for warm areas, since the inner tent can
also be erected on its own.
Tunnel tents are held by at least two parallel erected tent rod arches that are tensioned
laterally. Of all the tent types, the tunnel tents offer the best use of space
and at the same time they are very lightweight. The ability to quickly erect and
dismantle the tents makes them the perfect companion for trips into areas with
unstable weather.
UNIVERSAL ALL-ROUND TENTS & SPECIAL HIGHEND MODELS
TATONKA offers the perfect tent for every use. The lightweight and robust all-round
tents are ideally suited for tours under normal weather conditions. The inner
tents are made of 190T Ripstop Nylon W/R and especially breathable. The outer
tent is made of Polyester material, has four-layer PU coating on the inside and a
water column of 8 000 mm. The material is non-fading and UV-resistant. The
anodised aluminium tent rods are virtually break-proof.
The robust and tear-proof Highend tents are perfect for extended tours and frequent
camping trips – even under extreme weather conditions. The inner tent is made
of 30D Nylon Ripstop W/R, which is waterproof, breathable and especially lightweight.
The outer tent is made of Nylon 6.6 Ripstop Silicone and is also very lightweight
and is especially tear-proof. The five-layer coating with silicone elastomer
makes the material waterproof and ensures that water easily beads and rolls off.
The scandium tent rods are highly stable and lightweight.
Tunnel tent and a reliable shelter from the rain. Tape-sealed seams, waterproof covers vents
and attachment points – and like all TATONKA tunnel tents the outer tent of the Arctis models can
be left out in the rain when dismantling, while the dry inner tent can be put away. And what you
walls makes Arctic 2 unbelievably spacious compared to dome and geodesic tents – and that’s not
to mention the longer and wider Arctis 3.
