Golimumab improves insulin
production in T1D
Among children and
young adults with
newly diagnosed overt
type 1 diabetes, the human
monoclonal antibody
golimumab resulted
in better endogenous
insulin production and
less exogenous insulin,
revealed a new study
published in the New
England Journal of
Medicine.
However, it is unknown
if golimumab could
preserve beta-cell function
in youth with overt
type 1 diabetes. Type 1
diabetes is an autoimmune
disease characterized
by progressive loss of
pancreatic beta cells
that leads to lifelong
dependence on insulin
therapy.
A partial-remission
response was observed in
43% of participants in the
golimumab group and in
7% of those in the placebo
group. The therapy
increased glycaemic
control and glycated
haemoglobin level.
Antenatal fiu vaccination
improves perinatal outcomes
Pregnant women had
0·7–0·9% risk of
influenza for each month
of pregnancy spent in
the influenza season, find
a recent multinational
study conducted including
pregnant women in India,
Peru, and Thailand.
The findings showed
that antenatal influenza
was associated with
late pregnancy loss
and a reduction in
birthweight. Though
influenza vaccination
during pregnancy prevents
influenza among women
and their infants, it still
remains underused.
Metformin use
cuts neonatal
adiposity
Metformin
use during
pregnancy for
type 2 diabetes
mellitus was found
associated with
better glycaemic
control in pregnant
women and
reduced neonatal
adiposity, finds the
MiTy trial.
Women in
metformin group in
the study showed
better glycaemic
control at 34
weeks’ gestation
than that of the
usual insulin
regimen. The
participants in the
group also gained
less weight of
about 7·2 kg when
compared with 9
kg in the placebo
group. Women
given metformin
were also less
likely to require
caesarean section
delivery.
New drug
could improve
reproductive
health in women
Scientists at Imperial
College London
recently discovered that
a kisspeptide activating
drug could effectively treat
a range of reproductive
conditions that affect
fertility such as polycystic
ovary syndrome (PCOS) and
hypothalamic amenorrhea
(HA).
A single dose of the
drug MVT-602 can induce a
longer duration of hormonal
stimulation in women
than naturally occurring
kisspeptin KP54 without
causing side-effects. The
oligopeptide kisspeptin-1
receptor agonist MVT-602
was found to induce more
potent signalling of the
kisspeptin system.
