Black Lives Matter
Playlist
BY RAHUL ANEESH
COVID-19 isn’t the only big thing occurring in 2020, ever since George Floyd
was killed, the Black Lives Matter movement has been reignited in full
force, so here is a playlist of songs that would be perfect for taking action
and relating to people’s feelings. Note, that some of these entries may not
necessarily be about racism but it could be applied to this current situation.
MICHAEL JACKSON – THEY DON’T
CARE ABOUT US:
This is a haunting song about the
prejudice, violence and racism in
the world. Something clearly related
to this situation is the line “Bang
bang, shot dead, everybody’s gone
mad”. The chorus can be used to get
your voice heard and gives you this
immaculate unstoppable feeling.
There is also a raging guitar solo
to build up the rage and create an
intense atmosphere. I could definitely
see lyrics to this song being written
on protest boards.
SCARLXRD – HELL IS XN EARTH:
It’s not the easiest going song on this
list nor is this song about racism but
is does explain well the bad things
happening to this world. The screams
and the aggressive trap metal
production help translate this rage
and the lyrics are about how we as
humans are giving earth a bad image,
probably a good message to spread
to the US police and the year 2020.
8 8 •• ENTERTAINMENT MARCH 2019 •• STUDENT LIFE LIFE
LINKIN PARK – HIT THE FLOOR:
This song is about the lies people
tend to spread and people tend to
blindly believe them. This could be
a message to all the biased news
reports stating that officers have
never hurt innocent protestors – but
we see innocent protestors and black
people being hurt by officers in social
media every 5 seconds. I also like the
roaring chorus which encourages
people to stand up.
DAVE – BLACK:
A song fully dedicated to racism,
and talks about Santan’s struggles
with his race and defends it. It also
has a sad piano instrumental which
is something Dave tends to hop on
when he discusses serious topics. The
instrumental and the storytelling help
reflect the damage racism has caused
to others. It’s not just the US that
should consider this song however,
but also the UK since they’ve been
involved in the protests lately.
JOEY BADA$$ - TEMPTATION:
The intro is a 9 year old giving
a speech which sets the scene
about how it’s unnecessary to treat
someone differently because of their
race. The instrumental is quite bright
and jazzy, and I could see people
coming together and singing the
chorus of the song; spreading its
message in an uplifting and lighthearted
way.
KANYE WEST – NEW SLAVES:
The first verse of this song refers to
his mother’s difficult background,
and talks about the times when
people prevented him from buying
anything from the store because
of his race. Now that he’s rich and
famous he’s now “portrayed” as
another “stereotypical” black man
who spends money on a “Bentley? Fur
coat? A diamond chain?”, so he can’t
really win. I also like the dark bass
and electronic plucks along the track.
The outro then becomes bright and
uplifting to showcase Kanye as a free
man, who will do anything to escape
this reality – oh, and we also get a
guest appearance from Frank Ocean.
MEEK MILL – OTHERSIDE OF
AMERICA:
The intro is part Trump’s latest
controversial speech to set the scene,
and then Meek Mill discusses his
issues and harsh background on top
of this aggressive mainstream trap
instrumental. This track is good for
motivation to keep fighting for rights
and is a great message Meek Mill is
spreading and tells a personal story
of a black man and their struggles.
This theme continues at the end, with
part of a 2018 CNN interview included
in the song.

Oldies But Goodies
BY SHANNON FOURMY LOWE
By definition, ‘alternative’ and/or
‘indie’ music refers to the genre’s
distinction from mainstream,
commercial pop or rock. It is usually
categorised by date, emerging in
the early 1970s, through to the 80s
and 90s. And although I wouldn’t
name my music taste as alternative
or indie, those three decades are
my most frequented and feature
many of my favourite songs. So, in an
attempt to expose you, dear reader,
to what I believe to be the gems of
music history in its entirety, I have
proposed 5 songs that I absolutely
love. Along with the songs, I am going
to try and sell them to you through
one sentence; try to demonstrate
why I find them to be favourites.
These won’t be in a ranked order,
simply 5 picks from my catalogue.
Let’s kick things off with a band I’m
sure is highly expected:
1. UNLOVEABLE - THE SMITHS,
LOUDER THAN BOMBS:
It has been said that The Smiths
are a depressing band for annoying
music purists, but this track is almost
sarcastic in highlighting this criticism
through its upbeat, school disco style
guitar contrasting with lyrics such as
“I wear black on the outside because
black is how I feel on the inside” –
truly a favourite.
2. COUNTING BACKWARDS -
THROWING MUSES, THE REAL
RAMONA:
Layering stepsisters and lead singers
Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly’s
raw vocals on top of a wicked guitar
riff and harsh drums, Counting
Backwards is the perfect party song
to jam out to as the explosiveness just
grabs you from the soul.
10 10 • 10 • ENTERTAINMENT • MARCH ISSUE 2019 40 •• STUDENT • STUDENT LIFE LIFE LIFE
3. CORNFLAKE GIRL – TORI AMOS,
UNDER THE PINK:
Musical prodigy Tori Amos delivers
an ethereal rock piece here with
her elusive lyrics and high range,
manipulating her voice on certain
words and wowing with a piano solo
that just makes you want to sway.
5. DEAR GOD – XTC, SKYLARKING
In the late 80s, XTC produced the
rebellious hit “Dear God” which
questions the reliance of the world
on religion and the man Himself and
Andy Partridge’s angry, ballad style
vocals along with the memorably
controversial lyrics situates it as a
favourite of mine.
4. LOW – CRACKER, KEROSENE
HAT:
Truthfully, this song is a vibe and by
mixing Johnny Hickman’s grungeesque
guitar with Michael Urbano’s
big drums and David Lowery’s soft
and nasally sounding vocals, Low
emits perhaps the perfect energy of
the early 90s grunge/rock style.

Interview
with
Wendy
Guevara
BY SOPHIE DEBENHAM
IMAGES BY SOPHIE DEBENHAM
In the wake of the black lives
matter movement singer and
songwriter Wendy Guevara
discusses her experiences of
how music transcends gender
and race.
Wendy Guevara, a Suffolk based
singer known for her unique
style and talent, started out
doing blues and jazz music, going
on later to explore pop, ballads
and soft rock genres. In 2010 she
released her debut album titled
“diversity expose” with her top
hit song titled “just go”. 4 years
later she released her second
album titled “destiny dreams
desire” with her top hit song
titled “wake up to the radio”.
Now, 6 years after her last
album release Wendy talks to
Sophie Debenham from Student
life about her future plans to
get back into music, and her
experiences within the music
industry.
WHICH MUSIC ARTIST ARE YOU
INFLUENCED BY THE MOST?
For the style I was doing I would have
to say Ella Fitzgerald.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG
YOU HAVE WRITTEN?
My favourite song I have written, I
would have to say “wake up to the
radio” from the destiny dreams desire
album.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST
MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE AS A
LOCAL MUSIC ARTIST?
I went to the Kensington roof gardens
where they had different clubs there
and I was singing in one of the clubs.
In the audience of where I was singing
I saw the sugababes. Also another
memorable experience was being in
the 100 women in 100 words book; I
think I was nominated by someone.
12 12 • 12 • ENTERTAINMENT • MARCH ISSUE 2019 40 •• STUDENT • STUDENT LIFE LIFE LIFE
DO YOU THINK THAT PEOPLE
FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS
ARE REPRESENTED IN THE MUSIC
INDUSTRY?
I think that people get put into
particular categories. I did two albums
where I did two specific types of
music because people say oh because
you’re black so you only do this type
of music and say you’re from some
small town in America so you only do
hillbilly or country music. It feels like
you can’t do a range of music as most
people want to do one type of music
so you can’t sing different types of
music. So I decided to write a range
of music to get different audiences
engaged.
Something I have noticed in the
industry is that generally there
are mostly men who are playing
instruments. But I have had some
women who have played instruments.
But something else is that it’s mostly
men who are writing music, there
aren’t as many women as you think
who write music.
WHAT EMPOWERS YOU TO WRITE
MUSIC?
I think it’s when I’m out driving on
a long journey and I just create
something. I can think of the music
and then I have to think of words to
go with the music afterwards.
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL
ARTIST?
My favourite local artist is Ed Sheeran.
HAVE YOU EVER HAD A NEGATIVE
EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE MUSIC
INDUSTRY?
Yes. This was way back when I started
I did this demo with this quartet and I
sent it in to these people who wanted
to do this recording. When I sent it
in they said ‘how it was a really good
backing track, but we want a live
band” so I said that was a live band
and they wouldn’t have it.
DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURE
PROJECTS PLANNED?
I was going to have a project planned
with the steelpan group but then
everything went mad with covid so
I’m not sure when we will get back
together.
WHAT WAS THE LAST ALBUM YOU
LISTENED TO FROM START TO
FINISH?
The last album I listened to from
start to finish was something for the
steelpan group it was the Jimmy Cliff
album the greatest hits.

Songs of the Summer
BY RAHUL ANEESH
Summer 2020 was quite something due to the pandemic and other things, but
I try and relive the summer times with songs that give the refreshing thoughts
of the beach, people sunbathing and surfing (without social distancing) and the
waves crashing into the sediment.
JADEN – CABIN FEVER:
I really enjoy the blissful instrumental which also complements the vocals.
Also, lyrically this song is relatable; I think the lines that hit hardest for me are
“Dreaming ‘bout it, summertime (Ooh), Thinking ‘bout it, summertime (Oh)”
and the chorus I cannot help but dance along to. I’d also highly recommend the
music video too as it captures what Summer 2020 has been perfectly.
LIL SKIES – HAVING MY WAY FEAT. LIL DURK:
Lil Skies makes a strong comeback with this song. This track gives the vibe you’re
in the night dancing around a bonfire in a Caribbean beach, also Skies and Durk
breeze through this feel good beat with ease.
JOJI – DAYLIGHT FEAT. DIPLO:
One thing that captures the summer vibe perfectly is that punchy and fruitful
Diplo instrumental, I get the vision of bicycles cruising through the sunlight. Joji
fits the vibe well and provides some solid vocals to the table.
DUA LIPA – LEVITATING:
When I hear the chorus, I cannot help but sing along and have a good time.
I also really enjoy the Intergalactic influences too, which adds to the “Future
Nostalgia” concept; the chorus provides a nice 80s feel and the bridge has got
some attitude. If this is a summer hit in Mars, Neptune or any distant planet, I
won’t be surprised.
LIL UZI VERT – VENETIA:
I really like the slippery and futuristic instrumental which gives the vibe of riding
a jet ski and speedboat across the bright blue shores, and Uzi’s flow on this track
too. Lil Uzi Vert has a good reputation for making a lot of feel good music which
make sense for this track to be played during the summer.
14 14 •• ENTERTAINMENT MARCH 2019 •• STUDENT LIFE LIFE
AITCH – RAIN FEAT. AJ TRACEY & TAY KEITH:
Everyone on this track killed it, I really liked the Tay Keith instrumental and was
interested to hear what a UK rapper(s) would sound like over mainstream US
production. Aitch and AJ Tracey embodied this instrumental. If you’re looking for a
song with mainstream production and killer performances look no further.
TRIPPE REDD – I LOVE YOU FEAT. CHANCE THE RAPPER:
The rough plucky guitars in this track help create the vision of summer. I really
enjoy the heavy 808s and the hard-hitting chorus as well and the animated
Chance The Rapper verse. I can also play this track anywhere or any mood
whether I’m happy or sad, making it an easy pick for my summer playlist.
RINA SAWAYAMA – XS:
The music video is currently sitting at 4 million views but I reckon it can go bigger,
because it’s got the essential ingredients for a summer pop song, like soft guitars
as well as occasional drops of heavy guitar riffs, and lyrics being delivered in a
confident tone and a catchy chorus. The verses can be seen and described as a
typical summer shopping spree.
TKAY MAIDZA – SHOOK:
Tkay Maidza is another artist that deserves a lot more recognition because a
majority of her discography has hit potential, and this is not an exception. This
track features excellent banging production with a catchy chorus and lines
delivered in a feel-good tone, when I hear the chorus, I feel like the greatest
person alive to be honest.
POP SMOKE – THE WOO FEAT. 50 CENT & RODDY RICCH:
The laid-back guitars set the tranquil beach vibe; these are done by 18-year-old
Swedish guitarist Rxcksta. Pop Smoke’s auto-crooning helps adds to the tranquility
and Roddy Ricch and 50 help give this track more hit potential with their
performances. If this song doesn’t remind you of a chill summer, I don’t know
what does.
INTERNET MONEY – LEMONADE FEAT. DON TOLIVER, NAV & GUNNA:
The first 5 seconds of this track I immediately knew this was going to be a summer
smash because it contains a beat that spells “Summer” with a capital S and an
impressive hook by Don Toliver. NAV and Gunna do their thing on this track, but
for every day of Summer when the sun is shining, I have to play this song, it’s the
law. Hence why it’s my personal song of the summer.

GAMING
CO-EDITOR LOUISA SADLER
Soundtracks in
Games
BY LOUISA SADLER
When it comes to games, most
people think about the gameplay,
the graphics, the characters/
narrative but what about the music?
When it comes to games, their
soundtrack is often overlooked and
under-appreciated amongst gamers
when the soundtracks should be
celebrated more for what they add
to the game.
As a gamer myself, I find that the
soundtrack is just as important as all
the other components that makes
a game because of the feelings the
music evokes and how it adds an
extra layer to the game. The music
in a game can heighten the tension
of a tense cutscene or during
action-packed moment where you
are fighting to survive. The music
can also end up making you laugh
or cry during the game’s heartfelt
moments or tragic moments.
Overall, the soundtracks in games
have the power to make or break
the game and these are some of
the games I believe the soundtracks
help make the game as good as it is:
KINGDOM HEARTS SERIES:
Those who are regular readers of
Student Life know I regularly write
about Kingdom Hearts and the
series of games within the franchise
and this time is no different.
When it comes to games and their
soundtracks, Kingdom Hearts
knocks it out of the park. Each main
character, Disney and non-Disney
world, fight sequences, opening
and closing sequences have their
own unique soundtracks that as
soon as you hear it you know its
Kingdom Hearts. This game series
rely on the importance of music and
their soundtracks and is perfectly
crafted to evoke the emotions
you should be feeling at particular
times and makes these moments
16 16 •• MARCH GAMING 2019 •• STUDENT LIFE LIFE
more powerful and memorable for
gamers. I find that each collection
of soundtracks for the worlds you
visit during the series are perfectly
matched and if any other soundtrack
in the franchise was used for a
particular world it just wouldn’t fit
and feel out of place. The same goes
for the soundtracks surrounding
particular characters such as Sora,
Kairi, Roxas and Naminé. These
soundtracks also perfectly match
the characters within the series,
highlighting through the song the
type of character they are and how
each soundtrack, in a way, reveals
the journey each character will go on
throughout the series. When it comes
to appreciating what music has to
offer for games, then the Kingdom
Hearts series is a perfect example of
how music in games can completely
transform them from something
good to something amazing.
SPIDER-MAN:
time and attention that went into the
soundtrack for this game. Even the
soundtrack playing in the background
whilst you are swinging around New
York as Spider-Man once again just
seemingly fits into the game as if it’s
just always meant to be there and the
soundtrack during fight sequences
also just seem to fit and makes the
fight sequences more exciting (as
does Spider-Man’s jokes whilst he’s
fighting). Once again, this game was
made even greater because of the
soundtrack and adds an extra layer to
the game.
So, what to take from all of this?
Well, I think the answer is simple.
Soundtracks in gaming have the
power to transform a game into
something that is much more
immersive, emotional, and generally
much more fun to play. Soundtracks
in gaming, in my opinion, are just as
important as everything else found
in a game and feel it needs to be
appreciated more.
This game also highlights just how
music can transform a good game
into a great one. Before you even
start the game itself, the music at the
start screen immediately gets you
excited to play the game because
as soon as you hear it you think of
Spider-Man. On top of this, it is so
powerful and moving that it sounds
like it would belong in any Spider-
Man or Marvel movie let alone within
this game; indicating just how much

Adventurous Possibilities

My cat rolls over

What’s it like for her, always at home?
I’ve seen her venture outside,

No boundary too high for her,
how can I enjoy myself when I must stay at home like her?
Her eyes dance from birds

I decide to follow her out, in need of a break.

The sun brushes it’s tender warmth over me.
Inhaling the smell of freshly cut grass,
My sense of confinement flies away.
With the birds tweeting merrily,
Who could not be joyful this day?
Later, I turn pages of unread books,
skim through mountains of my imagination and
absorb knowledge intermingled
with my friend’s wit.
Time flies by with enjoyment,
Friendship, laughter,
not boredom.
Boredom wasn’t invited into our house,
The first,
Nor the second week at home.
When my cat dreams

Chasing mice across our garden
Purring softly in front of a fireplace
Exploring the wilderness of our world
But right now,
in this moment,
Purring next to me,
She’s completely content.

A dark fantasy twined heavily with

The blurb we’ve been given definitely
holds a lot of mystery, but I have high
hopes after Susanna gave us Jonathan
Strange & Mr Norrell. I would try and
summarise the blurb, but I think
it’s best if you read it for yourself:
‘Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps
he always has. In his notebooks,
day after day, he makes a clear and
careful record of its wonders […]
On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi
sees his friend, the Other. At other
times he brings tributes of food
and waterlilies to the Dead. But
mostly, he is alone. Messages begin
to appear, scratched out in chalk on
the pavements. There is someone
new in the House. But who are they
and what do they want? Are they a
friend or do they bring destruction
and madness as the Other claims?
Lost texts must be found; secrets
must be uncovered. The world
that Piranesi thought he knew is
becoming strange and dangerous.
The Beauty of the House is
immeasurable; its Kindness infinite.’

by Aiden Thomas
Release Date: October 1st
A trans, Latinx own voices novel with
magic, ghosts and gay romance? I’M.
HERE. FOR. IT.
This was by far one of my most
anticipated releases of 2020 (coming
in at second place if you wanted me
to specify). Magic is always a drawing
point for me, but combine that with
trans and gay representation that’s
also by an own voice author and
culturally diverse too? I can already
tell this is going to be amazing!
‘When his traditional Latinx
family has problems accepting
his true gender, Yadriel becomes
determined to prove himself a real
brujo. With the help of his cousin
and best friend Maritza, he performs
the ritual himself, and then sets out
to find the ghost of his murdered
cousin and set it free.’ Only he
summons the wrong ghost, one that
refuses to go quietly into death.

together a special edition box for
Cemetery Boys which will include
a signed bookplate, letter from
the author, an enamel pin, and a

- ART CO-EDITOR, KAY SABERTON
1. Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the
World, and Become a Good Ancestor (2020) by Layla F. Saad
This book leads readers through a journey of understanding their
white privilege and participation in white supremacy, so that they
can stop consciously and/or unconsciously inflicting damage on
black, indigenous and people of colour. This, in turn, will allow
them to help other white people do better and stop them having
to ask their black friends and colleagues ‘what do I say/do?’ when
faced with questions.

2. White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk
About Racism (2018) by Robin Diangelo
An informative book that works to understand and summarise
why white people may feel offended when the topic of racism is
mentioned. It discusses the various aspects of white fragility and
teaches people how to look within themselves, control their white
fragility and get past it.
3. The Good Immigrant (2016) by Nikesh Shukla
This book brings together the stories of 21 BAME (Black, Asian,
Minority Ethnic) individuals living in the UK. From being born and
raised here, migrating here as a child or having migrated here as
an adult, this book explores what it is like living in a country that
needs you but doesn’t quite accept you.
4. Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire (2018) by Akala
Written by award-winning political commentator Akala, Natives
explores Britain’s imperialist history, covering a range of issues, from
the police, education and identity to politics, sexual objectification
and the far right. The novel reveals that the UK’s reluctance to
confront its racist past is one of the key reasons why prejudice
attitudes are still being accepted as the norm.
5. Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race
(2017) by Reni Eddo-Lodge
This exceptional book explores the links between gender, class
and race that permeates Britain and other countries. Exploring
issues from eradicated black history to the political aim of white
dominance to whitewashed feminism, Eddo-Lodge offers a timely
and essential framework for how to see, acknowledge and counter
racism in the current age.

PART ONE
‘The Floating World’
BY HANNAH KING
SHORTLISTED ENTRY IN STUDENT LIFE’S SHORT STORY COMPETITION 2019.
I read this book once that talked
about something they call the
floating world. The floating world
was an expression to explain the
phenomena that occurred at night,
when mostly wealthy men would visit
the pleasure quarters and experience
all sorts of hedonistic catharsis, and
then when the morning came the
sensation disappeared. Whilst I have
never been to a pleasure district,
that’s not something a skinny girl
born on a wet, grey London day in
April 95’ normally does, something
about this phenomenon rang true.
Have you ever had a conversation
with someone once the sun has
gone down that you just wouldn’t be
able to have in the daylight? Yeah…
like that. That’s the floating world.
For us three, the floating world
looks like a room. The apartment
belongs to David and Paul; they’d
shared it since they were students.
David had done his degree in political
history and is working for an MP now;
it sounds really cool if you don’t go
into the details, but the reality is that
he isn’t changing the world yet- and
this really frustrates him. He types
up minutes from meetings mostly.
Paul on the other hand, dropped
out of his degree and went to work
as a receptionist at the hospital. He
spends most of his time researching
ways to become successful without a
degree, but I think he’s quite content
at the hospital really. Me, I stayed on
after my degree to do more learning.
I have so many ideas of what I want
to do, and I just can’t choose one.
So, I’m going to keep cramming
my head full of books and writing
papers that might be world changing
one day. But that’s not important…
I was talking about the room.
The walls are this gross faded
beige colour, and the boys have
stuck photos from over the years
all over them in this really uneven
way that bugs the hell out of me.
One day I swear I am going to
rearrange them, binning the bad
25 • 25 MARCH • ISSUE 2019 40 • STUDENT LIFE
ones of me along the way. There’s
a leather sofa, that I’m pretty sure
was black at one point, and two
mismatched armchairs, one red
and one mustard yellow, with a dark
heavy wooden round coffee table
in the middle with burn marks from
coffee cups and little scratches from
where David dug his pen in when he
got frustrated back during his essay
days. The boys are definitely not
gifted at interior design, it looks a
little bit like they went into a charity
shop and picked one of each style
and threw them together hoping for
the best. Honestly, that’s possibly
what they did. The windows are big;
from ceiling to floor so during the
day the room is bright. The bulb
has gone in their main light though
so once it gets dark, we only have
lamps which leaves the room bathed
in a warm dim glow. It’s here you
can sometimes feel the floating
world. And from the floating world,
the three of us build our own city.
The last time we went there
we were all sat on the floor. Paul
was leaning against the sofa, one
arm stretched out along it and a
beer in his other hand. I was sat
opposite him, leaning against the big
window with a sketchbook perched
on my bent knees, a sketch of Paul
beginning to emerge. I draw Paul
a lot these days, I may have some
unaddressed feelings that I will
confront at some point, but not yet.
I don’t want to upset the balance the
three of us have. But again, this is
not what I’m trying to talk about so
let us move on. David was next to me,
leaning towards me and picking at a
hole in his faded jeans, his shoulder
pressed comfortably into mine. It was
the middle of October, so the glass
was cool on my back in contrast to
David’s body heat at my side. The
coffee table was starting to fill with
empty brown bottles, and the radio
was playing quietly from the kitchen.
‘I’ve been thinking…’ David
starts, the first move of the night,
‘I might quit my job.’ No one says
anything, or even looks at him, but
my pencil stills letting him know I
am listening. David often needs a bit
of time to consider his words, and
if you speak too soon, he’s likely to
decide not to tell you. But if you let
the silence extend then he’s more
honest. So that’s what we do. We wait
for him to finish. ‘I watch the news,
or I look at the world and I think…
there has to be more than this.’
We all know what this is instinctively.
Because we all feel it too. We wake
up, go to work, or in my case the
library, come home and eat dinner,
then we meet up here and watch a
movie, or work on separate projects
then eventually I’ll drive home and
they’ll go to sleep. And we do it again.
But we’re still young enough to have
that belief that maybe we’re different,
the sort of different that makes a
mark, that our ideas are brilliant, and
people just haven’t realised it yet. It
manifests a little differently for all of
us. David wants to fix the world from
the house of commons, whereas Paul
wants to do something a little more
26 • 26 MARCH • ART 2019 • STUDENT • STUDENT LIFE LIFE
low key. Lately, Paul has been going to
Church and he likes the idea of joining
a mission group, changing people’s
lives on a more intimate level. Me, I
have a sense of pride over my own
mind. I want to write the world better,
to change the way people think
from my laptop. Some kind of critic
I suppose, but not here… my mind is
wasted in London. But whatever our
future looks like, we all know that this
cannot be all there is to life. It just can’t.
‘Oh yeah?’ I say when
David doesn’t say anything else.
‘Yeah. I know that if I stay in
my job, I can work my way up, but it’s
going to take years. And I can’t wait
years. The world doesn’t have years.’
‘So, what will you do instead?’
He shrugs. ‘I don’t know, but I do
know that I have something to offer.’

Christmas Gift Ideas
for Book Lovers
BY ROSIE WEDGE
Whilst none of us are quite sure what Christmas 2020 is going to look like, I’m sure many
of us still have plans to encourage as much normalcy as we can. Christmas decorations,
Christmas dinner, time with family (with as many members as social distancing allows us!)
and gift giving. Especially as 2020 has kept a lot of us apart, now more than ever we need
to show one another how much we love and appreciate one another. There are of course
so many ways of doing this, but picking out a present especially for someone that you know
they’ll love is a great way of doing this, and what better time than Christmas?!
As shipping times are a little haywire right now, it’s best to get on top of things, so here are
some bookish gifts to give to the bookworms in your lives, or to even ask for yourself if your
friends and family are asking for ideas of what to get you!
BOOKISH CANDLES
Who doesn’t love a candle? They smell gorgeous, and add such a warm, cosy vibe to any
room. There are plenty of sellers on Etsy that sell candles with scents inspired by different
fictional characters and locations. They can sometimes be a bit pricier than your standard
28 • 28 MARCH • ART 2019 • STUDENT • LIFE LIFE
candle from the high street, but not only are they inspired by books but by buying one,
you’re likely supporting an independent seller who really needs your support during this
time of year! PRICE RANGE £5-10
COLLECTORS EDITIONS
Maybe your friend doesn’t read
a whole lot of books, but has one
particular book that they adore, and
constantly re-read. Why not consider
getting them a beautiful collectors
edition of the book to add to their
collection? Collectors editions often
have additional content, and even
special physical features such as
embossing, ribbon bookmarks, or
sprayed edges! They look stunning
on bookshelves, too, and are extra
great presents if your friend or family
member considers themselves a
collector, not just a reader!
PRICE RANGE: £10-30
REPLICAS
This idea is super cool if you are
looking for a gift inspired by a fantasy
book or series. A lot of sellers again
on Etsy specialise in making prop
and costume replicas from different
books, such as replicas of the One
Ring from Lord of the Rings, the
Mortal Cup from the Shadowhunter
universe; I even have a replica of Bag
End from the Hobbit! It’s hard to put
a price range on this, as it could be
something small like the One Ring, or
a £200 replica of the Sword of Godric
Gryffindor, so it’s best to have a look
around yourself here!
BOOKMARKS
It sounds obvious, but you’d be
surprised how many people just use
receipts and sticky notes amongst
other random things as bookmarks
because they’re always losing theirs.
However, metal book marks are
becoming really popular, and often
have beautiful patterns inscribed on
them, as well as a tassel at the top to
show your place more clearly. This
gift is especially good if you’re on a
budget! PRICE RANGE: £3-6
BOOK EARRINGS
One of my favourite gifts that I ever
received are two sets of earrings
made from upcycled book pages! One
reads “Magnus” and the other reads
“Warlock”, an ode to my favourite
character from the Shadowhunter
universe. These are easier found for
popular YA series characters, but
are awesome for adding a subtle
booklover vibe to any outfit! A lot of
Etsy sellers (can you tell I love Etsy?!)
also make earrings that look like book
stacks out of clay, which are super
sweet! They come in so many colours
and designs, so they go well with any
outfit. As they are usually quite dainty
too, they aren’t too heavy to wear
on a casual day. Jewellery is such a
special gift, especially if it’s designed
with something someone loves in
mind! PRICE RANGE: £5-12

CO-EDITOR VACANCY
Interview with
Suffolk Influencer:
April Gant
BY RACHEL MITCHELL
WHEN DID YOU FIRST START
BLOGGING?
I started blogging on Tumblr back in
2013 in my first year of University, I
slowly progressed to the blog I have
today on Wordpress.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
CONTENT?
I think my content can described as
a mix of fashion and lifestyle with
a dose of me thrown in for good
measure. I love sharing what I’m
wearing but also like showing what
I’m doing day to day too whether
that’s drinking coffee or going for a
local walk. I’m also all about feeling
confident whatever size you are and
will always promote loving your own
body.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLATFORM
TO PRODUCE CONTENT FOR?
As much as I sometimes get
frustrated with it, I do love creating
content for Instagram and with the
introduction of Reels, it’s just made
the platform even more fun.
WHO OR WHAT DO YOU TAKE
INSPIRATION FROM?
Other creators is my main source
of inspiration as I love seeing what
everyone creates and how they
adapt different platforms to suit
their passions. I also love getting
inspiration from just random people
whilst I’m out and about, if I see an
outfit I like on someone, I’ll keep it
in mind and try to use elements of it
when styling an outfit.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST
ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?
I know it’s a cliche one but probably
graduating university with a 2:1
degree, I never thought I was smart
enough to even go to university let
alone graduate with a degree. I also
got a 1st on my dissertation which
was pretty cool.
30 30 •• MARCH FASHION 2019 •• STUDENT LIFE LIFE
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CREATE
CONTENT?
It can vary depending on the type of
content, short form video content
like Reels/Tik Toks can take anything
from 10 minutes to an hour. There’s a
whole process before you even start
shooting with planning, setting up etc.
Shooting Instagram content can take
the whole day or an hour, depending
on how much I want to shoot that
day. I tend to bulk shoot outfits for
indoor content every other week and
outdoor content has ended up being
whilst I’m out and about. By far the
longest content to create from start
to finish is YouTube but I honestly
love the whole process.
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE
EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Don’t focus on what anyone else is
doing, just keep striving for yourself.
WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD
YOU GIVE TO ANYMORE WANTING TO
START A BLOG?
If you’re wanting to start your own
blog, do it about something you’re
passionate about and don’t be
worried about the numbers.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF
CONTENT CREATING?
I love the buzz you get whilst creating
good content, it’s hard to explain but
it’s like this little burst of excitement
when you get a good shoot or your
Reel turns out well. It’s the happiness
that every creative strives to feel I
think.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROCESS
FROM RESEARCHING IDEAS, TO THE
PUBLICATION OF YOUR CONTENT
An idea for a blog post or Instagram
post could literally come from
anywhere but once I have the idea,
I normally tend to go to Instagram,
Google and Pinterest to get some
inspiration and ideas of how the
idea could be executed. I would also
think about how it would fit in with
my existing content too and maybe
even ask my followers if it would be
something they’d be interested in. It’s
very rare that I have an idea and just go
straight into it, a lot more goes into “just
an Instagram post”.
WHAT IS YOUR GOAL FOR THE NEXT
YEAR?
I’d love to push myself creatively when
it comes to content creation, push more
boundaries and try new things. My goal
on Instagram is to hit 10k followers too
which has always been a benchmark for
me when starting out (I know it’s not all
about the numbers), I’d just feel like this
sense of achievement that 10k people
felt I was worth the follow. After going
through mainstream education and not
being particularly confident in myself or
having many friends, I’d like to think my
account could be a place to showcase
that it is possible for people similar to
me.

BEAUTY
CO-EDITOR LIBBY DAWSON
& ELISE DIXON
SUPPORTED BY
LETTING YOUR SKIN
BREATHE
BY LIBBY DAWSON
Whilst this global pandemic and being
immersed into constant craziness
can be very stressful, a good way to
relieve these pressures is to use this
opportunity (whilst we have more
time) to take better care of ourselves.
Agreed, a healthy and pretty
complexion might not be the biggest
of our worries at this moment in time;
however, it is good to focus our minds
onto something else and whilst we
are all staying inside to be safe, now
more than ever will be a good time to
strip right back and put our skin first.
Letting your skin breathe is essential
to the way your skin develops over
time. It sounds strange to think that
your skin aaactually breathes, but it
really does. Did you know that the top
layer of your skin is actually dead?!
(kinda gross I know) It’s the lower
layers that use up the oxygen from
your bloodstream.
FACT: 7% of the oxygen you take
into your lungs is used directly by
your skin.
There is a misconception that in order
to let your skin breathe, you shouldn’t
wear make up and this is not
necessarily the case. You don’t have
to wear zero make up to allow your
skin to breathe, it just comes down
to the products that you’re using.
Whilst we are self-isolating, it could
be a good idea to drop the make-up
and embrace our natural beauty, but
if you’re a self-confessed make-up
obsessed kind of person, there are
other ways to approach this.
Firstly, it is important to use products
that use natural ingredients and
have zero chemicals; it’s the oils and
preservatives that are common in
many products that block your pores.
By using natural products, your
skin is able to continue to breathe
underneath and prevent the chances
of breakouts or acne. Just think, if
32 32 • • MARCH BEAUTY 2019 • • STUDENT LIFE LIFE
you’re using products that are full of
harmful ingredients, these are just
going to be sinking in and adding to
your bloodstream. Preventing oxygen
to your skin is when it becomes dull
and breakouts occur.
As well as that, if you do wear makeup
regularly, it is important to adopt
a regular skincare routine. By simply
cleaning your face at the end of each
day you are already getting rid of the
dirt that is gathered in your pores. To
remove absolutely everything, use a
cleanser, then exfoliating your skin
among this will also give it that added
deep clean that we sometimes need;
especially if you’ve applied several
layers of make-up.
You could also try going for a lighter
coverage make-up look. I know
sometimes we all love (and feel like
we need) the full coverage heavy duty
products, but it could be a good idea
to switch it up every once in a while.
Fresh air and exercise is also proven
to help your skin look refreshed.
Promoting the circulation of oxygen
as well as allowing nutrients to be
absorbed more efficiently encourages
your skin cells to grow faster. This
therefore means an increased
collagen production which helps
improve your skin texture and
moisture retention. These factors are
also believed to reduce stress which
of course, is one of skin’s biggest
enemies!
*Collagen is the most prevalent
protein in your skin. It is a primary
component of connective tissue
that helps to keep your skin looking
young. Elastin is also another protein
that works along with collagen to
keep your skin firm and tight; this
gives it elasticity to prevent lines and
wrinkles.*
Your diet is another huge factor that
contributes to how your skin looks;
one rich in fresh foods and low in
processed and refined foods is going
to not only benefit your whole body,
but your skin too. Did you know that
the skin is not only dependent on
oxygen, but also the functioning of
kidneys, intestines aaand your liver.
They’re all about removing waste
products from your body so the less
waste you put in, the less waste there
will be that needs to be removed. This
means that your bodily system will be
fresh which is needed to reduce your
chances of blotchy, blemished skin.
The final two factors I will mention, is
sleep (yay) and water! Your skin cells
regenerate as you sleep so be proud
to go for your 3627288th nap of
lockdown, you’re getting your beauty
sleep. It’s the news we all needed, it’s
the truth and it really does happen
overnight. Then finally, water…
drinking it, spraying your face with it,
freezing it and icing your skin, these
aaaall have their benefits! You don’t
need to buy all these fancy products,
just go to the sink.

TRAVEL
CO-EDITOR ELISE DIXON
Christians have Christmas and
Easter, and these holidays are
largely celebrated across the world.
According to 2015 figures, Christians
form the biggest religious group
by some margin, with 2.3 billion
adherents or 31.2% of the total world
population of 7.3 billion. The religion
believes in one god and pray towards
Jesus- the son of God.
Judaism is the world’s oldest
religion, it’s around nearly 4000
years old! Judaism believed God
revealed himself through ancient
prophets. The history of the religion
is very important to the members
of the religion. Hanukkah means
“dedication” in Hebrew and in
November or December the holiday
is celebrated with the lighting of
the menorah, traditional foods,
games, and gifts. Why is the holiday
celebrated? The festival is a time for
Jewish people to remember their
victory in a battle against the Greeks
over 2,000 years ago to practice their
religion without restriction.
In total, as of 2010, there was around
a total of 14 million Jewish people in
the world, representing 0.2% of the
global population. In 2050, the Jewish
population is expected to number
about 16 million! Meaning all these
Festivals and
Celebrations
from Around
the World
BY ELISE DIXON
people will celebrate the holiday.
Like many other religions, Jewish
people worship God. This takes
place in a synagogue. Jewish people
attend services at the synagogue on
Saturdays during Shabbat.
Another religion which is rather
interesting is the Buddhist religion.
Buddhism is a faith that was founded
by Siddhartha Gautama (“the
Buddha”) more than 2,500 years ago
in India. Those who follow the religion
take part in a festival called ‘Buddha
day’ or ‘Wesak’ the celebration of the
Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and
death. The festival is a celebration of
much colour.
Buddhists believe in the four noble
truths: existence is suffering (duhkha);
suffering has a cause, namely craving
and attachment (trishna); there is
a cessation of suffering, which is
nirvana; and there is a path to the
cessation of suffering.
34 34 • MARCH • TRAVEL 2019 • STUDENT • LIFE LIFE
It’s important to understand different
religions and their beliefs, to further
understand the world we live in.
In total, around as many as 535
million people around the world
practice this religion, which would
represent between 8% and 10% of
the world’s total population. Several
countries have a very high proportion
of Buddhism followers. The religion
is considered to be very calm and
relaxing.
Wesak involves water being poured
over the shoulders of the Buddha.
It reminds Buddhists to purify their
own minds from greed, hatred, and
stupidity. It also consists of chanting
and praying, giving offerings to
monks, cleaning and decorating
homes and going to temples. These
all occur during this festival to
celebrate.
WHY ARE CELEBRATIONS
IMPORTANT WITHIN RELIGIONS?
Religious festivals are important for
families to be able to teach their loved
ones about the religion they worship
towards and to also to celebrate the
religion they worship. Not to mention
that it can be a very positive thing to
celebrate, as all different religious
festivals bring the same message of
love, tolerance and understanding.
Celebrations and festivities teach
everyone to come together, forgetting
negativity we may be enduring within
the world.
MY VIEWS
I personally do not worship towards
a religion but have a large amount of
respect to those who do as it takes a
lot of hard work and loyalty. In total,
around 200 million to 240 million do
not worship towards a religion or a
God. Within China and Russia, a large
amount of people do not believe in a
God, yet if we looked at America, you
would see that a lot more people do
worship a God. Depending on one’s
location, depends on their religious
views. Most of these views are due
to location and upbringing as some
religions are not as popular in that
part of the world.
To conclude, there are many
different religions that celebrate for
many different reasons. It brings
the religion and families together
and many enjoy the festivities. It’s
important to be accepting and kind
towards every religion as their reason
for prayer and worship is not harming
or affecting you as an individual
hence why one should allow everyone
to be left to their own choices. Many
religions travel to different countries
and due to this, stereotypes should
not occur as religion doesn’t look
a certain way and god does not
discriminate. There is a range of
religions and they each have their
different stories and origins which
is why they’re all so different. It’s
very important to continue to accept
everyone’s chosen religion.

Climate Benefits From
Lockdown
BY CELESTE SPAIN
Recently life hasn’t seemed quite like
it used to, everyone’s usual routines
have been interrupted by the virus
outbreak, which has caused several
countries to be in full lockdown
including Italy. In recent news there
have been a few positives, without
people being able to pollute the
planet as much from inside their
homes, The Grand Canal in Venice
has appeared to be clear for the
first time in years, due to less traffic
of boats along the canal. It seems
that, without us, nature thrives.
Well those of us clutching onto our
diesel/petrol cars and beloved meat
could certainly learn a thing or two. I
believe it’s incredibly frustrating that
this industrial age has made such a
revolting impact on the environment,
that now the use of fossil fuels are
something of a death sentence to
nature and yet are still used. That all
the evidence linking the meat industry
to COVID-19 is there and yet no one
on the surface seems to bat an eyelid.
The worries and eco-anxiety seems
to mount up and up: the climate, the
state of politics, and now this. Don’t
you worry though, there’s still time to
make Earth thrive again!
In your self-isolation take a moment
to think each day about the impact
you have upon the world as an
individual. Does it scare you that
one person can have such a large
impact? What if you decide to
positively impact the world, could
you do that? It becomes more and
more important as teenagers that
we focus on the positives in life, our
lives have just begun and yet we’re
having to stand up and help our dying
planet. If we stand together against
this virus (metaphorically of course),
like we do against Climate Change
and what adults have allowed to
happen politically (hint, hint), we will
succeed and save our planet. So let’s
give Earth a little time to restore itself
slightly then we’ll step in and help any
way we can. Raising awareness online
is a great way to help our planet, so
is researching how to reduce your
carbon footprint, acting upon it
and supporting charities! With each
voice, comment and post we have
the power, even now, to change our
society to allow nature to flourish.

What Is Going On In The
World?
BY CELESTE SPAIN
Where do we stand?
We stand together.
All races, genders, sexualities, everyone.
We will not be divided.
It’s time for change.
Change must be accepted not dismissed.
The roots of our culture have poison that rises,
only the wise realise this and act together for the good of
the human race.
If racist statues fall that should have fallen an age ago, let
them fall.
All those who love justice will cherish change.
Negativity fills the news, headlines slapped across the papers.
But people who fight for justice are not terrorists,
they are those who fight for a better future.
Who admire each and every person around them.
Because whatever the colour of our skin, whatever
the feelings in our hearts, whatever lies are spread to
suppress change, we all matter in this world and we
should always fight for a better one.
We all deserve to live the best lives we can live.
And we should use every ounce of our beings to both
welcome change and fight for justice.

Seven Principles Of
Public Life
BY TOM EVANS
Earlier this year, the chief pharmacist of a leading addiction service was blocked
from joining a government advisory board for, wait for it, failing to uphold the
Seven Principles of Public Life. Yes, just like the ten commandments, government
scripture exists and published in 1995, it provides your one-stop-guide to becoming
the perfect pious servant of the masses and I thought I would explain each of them
to you!
SELFLESSNESS
Holders of public office should act
solely in terms of the public interest.
We’re lucky to have a parliament that
thinks of people before themselves.
For example, in 2016 Labour put
forward an amendment on a housing
bill, ensuring all homes are “fit for
human habitation” and amending
a previous law applying this term
only to homes with an annual rent
of £52 or less. Which would probably
get you a garage, or maybe a small
shed in the Hebrides. 72 of the 309
Conservative MPs who defeated
this amendment happened to be
landlords themselves. Which has
nothing to do with how they voted.
INTEGRITY
(among others) To declare
and resolve any interests and
relationships.
Pretty simple this one. If by ‘resolve’
you mean make disappear. It’s great
to see Johnson further liberalising
his relationship policy, and whether
him and friend Jennifer Accuri did the
deed or not is irrelevant; two sexually
active adults can act as they please
in a private space. But bringing your
mate on trade trips across the world,
then awarding her £11,500 from the
Mayoral promotional agency might
just represent a ‘conflict of interest’.
Accuri, a prominent businesswoman
already, said she enjoyed Johnson
reading Shakespeare to her, while
Johnson simply stated there was
no interest to declare. And just like
Othello to Iago, we’ll take your word
for it pal.
OBJECTIVITY
To make decisions impartially, fairly
and on merit.
Governments are champions of
objectivity, which is why they got a
whole article on the subject. Luckily
we live in a meritocracy, that’s why
65% of the cabinet went to fee-paying
schools, compared to 7% of the
general population.
38 • MARCH MY PLANET 2019 • STUDENT LIFE
ACCOUNTABILITY
To be accountable to the public
for their decisions… and submit
themselves to scrutiny to ensure
this.
Good one here - quickfire round.
Our new PM is somewhat of an
accountability champ, making
himself available for scrutiny at every
opportunity and rarely dodging the
limelight. Like, that time he stole
a journalist’s phone showing him
a picture of a child on the floor of
Leeds hospital, or that time one of
his henchmen swore at a camera
team as Johnson hurried to hide in
a fridge, or that time (still ongoing
at time of writing) he swerved an
interview with Andrew. Or a personal
favourite, when he delivered milk to a
conservative supporter at 5am in the
morning, bravely handing over two
pints before scurrying off to crack on
with losing farming subsidies.
OPENNESS
To act and make decisions in an
open transparent manner.
Remember the Russia report? A
report was drawn up detailing
Russian influence in the British
political system, which is yet to be
released despite being ready before
the election. Nothing to see here folks
- really. And I would wager a small
shed on this; anything of actual public
interest in it will appear redacted and
all who repeatedly for its release will
have to Homer meme into the hedge.
Rumour suggests the government
are waiting for climate annihilation,
hoping for the sweet transparent
water of the North Sea and Thames
Estuary to rush its way through
parliament, sweeping away their
dodgy dealings.
HONESTY
Holders of public office should be
truthful.
Ha, ha, ha. Does this one need
explaining? (see every election,
everywhere, ever).
LEADERSHIP
To robustly support the principles
and be willing to challenge poor
behaviour whenever it occurs.
The government clearly supports the
principles, as this article has seen,
and challenging bad behaviour is
integral to all those setting up camp
in Downing Street. Take Johnson’s
pound shop Machiavelli advisor
Dominic Cummings, who when
scouting for ‘weirdos and misfits’
to revolutionize government hired
a ‘super forecaster’. The kind with
support for all those funky quirks like
eugenics, mandatory contraception,
and the impact of racial difference on
IQ. Didn’t see that one coming.
It doesn’t take a super forecaster to
predict where lying, hypocrisy, and
deception takes us. What we can do
is call out when a government slips
below its own principles. And as
the smokescreen of accountability
becomes hazier, that job becomes
harder. Punch wildly through the
smoke and you might just land one.

My Smear Test
BY APRIL GANT
For most women, approaching the
age of 25 may not seem significant
in many ways, it’s just another year
you’re growing older and wiser (?). It
does, however mark the time when
your first smear test is due. I have
always felt that 25 was a bit too late
to only be having your first smear
test but there is obviously a reason
it’s set for that age. If you haven’t
turned 25 yet but are due to within 6
months you most likely have received
a letter telling you about smear tests.
If you’ve already had your first smear
test you’ll know that they are due
every 3 years unless you’ve been told
otherwise...some people need to have
them yearly but that can depend on a
whole host of reasons.
I put off booking my smear test
for quite a few months (I couldn’t
really book it during a pandemic
anyway) and I know I’m not alone
in this feeling. I think when you
finally get round to booking a date
it begins to feel a bit more real and
the anticipation kicks in. Please don’t
put it off though, the sooner you
get it booked the better. I ended up
booking mine whilst at the doctors
having a blood test so it was kind of
sprung on me but I think that was
probably the best thing for me. I
didn’t really have any excuse to back
out of it. I’m definitely the type of
person that will put something off
and then finally face it when I don’t
have a choice.
I think it’s important for not only me
but others to share their experiences
in order to raise awareness of having
a smear test and helping others
feel less nervous about going for
theirs. I shall leave links to a few
helpful resources I used before
going for mine as I believe it’s best to
educate yourself by not only talking
to others that have had it done but
by doing your own research. Please
remember though that not everyone’s
experience is going to be the same.
Some people have told me absolute
horror stories about their smear tests
and then others have told me it was
a breeze.
If you have any other questions
about your smear test, please ring up
your GP surgery or wherever you’re
having your smear test done, they
will be happy to help and answer any
questions. Whether that be about
if you’re worried you’ll be on your
period or what you’ll need to do.
It’s always best to be armed with as
much information as possible.
41 41 •• MARCH ISSUE 2019 40 •• STUDENT LIFE LIFE
So let’s get down to my experience
and how I felt my first smear test
went. I booked mine as early as I
could in the morning on my day
off from work. I had heard some
people got slight cramps (this can
differ apparently) after their smear
test so didn’t want to be sitting at a
desk all day feeling uncomfortable.
I’m also the type of person that will
worry about something all day so
wanted it over and done with in
the morning so I didn’t waste a day
waiting and worrying about it. One
of the best bits of advice I can give
you is to wear something easy to lift
up on your bottom half and that is
also comfortable...for example jeans
would be a no go. I opted for my old
faithful black polka dot Zara dress
which I literally pulled up or a midi
skirt would be a good alternative.
I suppose the only real difference
between my experience in terms of
actually attending the smear test
was I had to wear a mask and wasn’t
allowed anyone to come with me
even to sit in the room for support. I
didn’t feel like the mask made me feel
uncomfortable or got in the way so
that was good.
I did have a bit of a surprise when
I walked through the door of the
appointment room as there was
the nurse who was performing the
smear test but also a student nurse
that was observing. I was asked if
it was okay for the student nurse
to watch and I said in a moment
of lapse judgement...of course. To
be completely honest I didn’t really
notice the student nurse was there
whilst having it done, it was just a
bit of a shock and I quickly had to
process that not one but two people
were going to be in the room when I
had my legs spread which is daunting
to say the least.
Before I stripped from the waist
down (what a weird statement to type
ha), the nurse went through some
questions with me, like checking
when my last period started, checking
my details and asked if I had any
questions myself. She then went
onto explain why smear tests are
such an important procedure for
women to have every 3 years and
what they actually check when doing
the smear test. I was also shown the
few bits of equipment she would
be using in order to do the smear
test. It wasn’t too much information
to take in which I was glad about
as I already felt a bit nervous so I
knew I wasn’t going to be good at
information intake. I do recommend
asking to see and have an explanation
of the equipment they’ll use and
what the whole procedure entails
as it definitely put my mind at ease
knowing exactly what was going to
happen and why.
It then came to getting ready for the
smear test, so I pulled my dress up,
hopped on the bed and used the
privacy towel that was provided until
the nurses were ready. Throughout
the whole process she spoke through
everything she was doing so I was
fully aware of what was going on
which I think really helped. At first she
used a smaller speculum which she
42 42 • SEXUAL MARCH HEALTH 2019 • STUDENT LIFE
said was something they normally
do with your first smear test and
then work their way up to the longer
one if needed. It also helps if you’re
a bit nervous about the ‘pain’ or
uncomfortable feeling if you have
the smaller one used first. The nurse
attempted three times to use the
smaller one with no success of being
able to locate my cervix, this was
probably the most uncomfortable
part of the whole procedure but it
definitely didn’t hurt so don’t let this
point put you off at all. In the end
the nurse ended up using the longer
speculum which most people will
have used during their smear test,
it makes it easier for the nurse to
locate the cervix and then take the
swab. The speculum is inserted with a
little bit of KY jelly lubricant so it goes
in smoothly and as comfortably as
possible. I heard from a lot of people
that the taking of the swab can be
the most uncomfortable part of the
smear test and can often cause you
to bleed a few hours after. They twist
the soft headed almost silicone feel
brush 5 times in order to get the best
sample for the test and then pop the
brush in a pot of liquid which is then
sealed and sent for testing. I honestly
only felt the brush once when the
nurse was collecting the sample and
I didn’t experience any bleeding or
light blotting after my test at all. The
speculum was then slowly removed
and I was left to get dressed and
ready to leave. All in all, I was in the
appointment for no more than 15
minutes in total and the test only took
around 5 minutes from start to finish
but would have been even shorter
if there wasn’t an issue with the
speculum at first.
The nurse told me I was going to
receive my results in two weeks and if
anything irregular showed up I would
be contacted and asked to come in
for a further appointment. She did
put emphasis on the fact that even
though some irregularities may show
up that it’s not necessarily a bad thing
or something to be worried about. I
haven’t obviously received my results
yet but I will be sure to either update
this post, write a follow up or mention
it on my Instagram.
Comparing how I felt before the
smear test and after the test is a
complete contrast and just goes to
show how our minds like to make
something out to be worse than it
might be. I felt absolutely fine after
my smear test and a definite sigh
of relief...I even treated myself to a
coffee and McDonalds which helped
me get through the smear test too ha.

The Importance of
Speaking Up
BY LEONI HALL
Do you ever find that you bottle
things up to save time of explaining
to others? Do you bottle them up to
stop yourself experiencing that event
again? Or do you do it because you
put others before yourself? If you do,
do not worry, you are not alone!
As a natural worrier, I was often like
this; I was worried what people would
say, whether they would judge me
because of it. I always bottle things up
as a natural way of carrying on, but at
some point, that bottle will overflow
and normally end in a breakdown or
constant negative thinking. Bottling
things up may be a good way of
dealing with the situation at the time
but in the long term it causes more
harm than good. It is vitally important
to speak up and to tell someone how
you are feeling. Not only does this
enable the weight on your shoulders
to lift, and for you to feel less anxious
about having to pretend you are
okay. The side effects of putting the
face on every day is that you not
only become distanced from reality,
you also put harm on your body. It
is said that it can affect your blood
pressure, self-esteem, and memory,
making you possibly more anxious,
depressed, and aggressive without
the intentional meaning.

I have been there and done this, it does not lead to many positive outcomes.
When I chose to speak to a friend I really trusted, I realised she had been
through a similar situation. We both discussed how we felt and how it affected
us. She gave me good advice and gave me tips on how to deal with anxiety.
It also gave me a lifeline, that I could speak to her whenever I felt anxious or
self-conscious to let what I have been bottling up out. Ever since then, I’ve
always found it better to speak up and let other people help you because you
never realise how much help they can give you, even when you feel like you’ve
tried everything to be ‘normal’. I know that everything probably seems like a
blur when you bottle things up, but I have found it helpful and relieving when
speaking up. I have physically felt so much better for doing so and it has made
my mental health improve.
So, if anything helpful is to come out of my article, I would recommend that you
speak up to someone if you feel unhappy or feel like you are bottling too much
up. Please do not ignore your feelings or disregard your mental health because
it is important to take care of yourself before it affects you too much, both
mentally and physically.

Be a Buddy, Not a Bully
BY GLORIA DARGARTZ
Luke is a teenaged student, who does
not match the sexual stereotypes
and gets regularly called a “fag” by
some classmates in the cafeteria or
the gym. The other students start to
ignore him and he suffers from this
isolation. Luke looks for any possible
way to avoid these places, to not get
insulted.
This is just one situation which could
be defined as bullying. Bullying
describes the term when someone is
picked on by a person or a group. A
bully makes fun of an individual, who
he thinks, does not fit in because of
either their appearance, behaviour,
race or religion, social state or sexual
identity.
There are different types of bullying
such as Verbal bullying, which means
that somebody is taunted or teased,
Physical bullying, that is practised
by hurting a human physically e.g.
punching, tripping or even sexually
assaulting him or her.
Examples for Psychological bullying
are gossiping or spreading rumours
and Cyberbullying means insulting
somebody by using social media
or spreading private pictures or
information.
These described forms can cause
damage to the bullied. If you have
ever bullied someone, your actions
cannot only make the other person
feel anxious, stressed or even
depressed. The attacked could also
have suicidal thoughts or start to hurt
himself.
Besides, bullying people can
IF THIS ARTICLE HAS 46 • BROUGHT MARCH UP 2019 ANY • EMOTIONS STUDENT THAT LIFEYOU WOULD LIKE

cause them to have eating or sleep
disorders.
If you experience bullying, do not
make yourself small. Be confident! Do
not care about the opinion of others,
because these judgements only limit
you! Do not ‘feed’ the bullies because
as long as they see how much it pulls
you down what they do or say, they
won’t stop.
Additionally when you make jokes
about people, you have to know their
limits! You cannot expect the other
person to know, whether you are
joking or not.
Never insult people that you barely
know, as a joke because you cannot
know if they get it or think you are
serious. Joking can never be an
excuse when you hurt someone!
If you ever see a situation where
another individual is being bullied,
stand up for them! Tell the bullies
to stop, or get someone to help and
support the attacked person to stay
strong. Do not just laugh or ignore
the situation! It could be you, being
attacked!

Accepting My Body
Conversations about body image
have always been difficult for me. I
feel that many people in my life would
say I show a lot of confidence. Though
to me this was a front to bandage
up the wounds I didn’t realise I had
and the wounds I ignored. These are
still healing to this day but I’m proud
of myself. For many girls (and boysthough
I can’t speak on men’s behalf)
when we are growing up, we quickly
pick up the toxic beauty standards
our society expects us to achieve. We
get conditioned into thinking we must
be skinny and pretty. Whilst younger
girls may not understand these ideals,
they still try to recreate themselves
to fit this beauty standard. As we
grow up, we then realise and learn
that these standards go more in
depth and are unrealistic. We can’t
be too skinny, but not fat. We must
be pretty, but it needs to be natural
so don’t wear makeup. But when
we don’t wear makeup someone
comments and says, ‘why aren’t you
wearing makeup, you look terrible’
(quote from my own experiences).
These are what every girl has heard
in their life and what every girl will
eventually hear (unless we change
our society now). It’s not until
recently I have learnt to ignore these
comments and ideals because they
can be so mentally damaging. But
worse yet these beauty standards are
so normalised that when I started to
break away from these manufactured
beauty standards, I felt weird for
trying to love my body for what it was.
Through watching therapists and
other women’s experiences and how
they have grown and reading books
I have realised and learnt so many
things. One book which has struck me
is called ‘Women don’t owe you pretty’
IF THIS ARTICLE HAS 48 • BROUGHT MARCH UP 2019 ANY • EMOTIONS STUDENT THAT LIFEYOU WOULD LIKE
TO DISCUSS, PLEASE REFER TO OUR CONTACT LIST AT THE END OF THIS SECTION
by Florence Given. It explains why we
feel so pressured to look a certain
way but also expands onto how
people of colour, black people, people
with disabilities are discriminated
against when it comes to body image
too. I feel for many people who are
struggling with body image and selfesteem,
to read and hear another
point of view is so helpful. It puts
the things we always think about
into perspective and can take us out
of a damaging cycle of thinking. In
my own experiences when having a
hard time about my body image, it
becomes the only thing I think about.
It starts to become an obsession. But
now with the education I have given
myself, I know that I don’t have to feel
the things I’ve felt. That my body is a
blessing.
To everyone struggling, I ask that
you listen to a positive outside voice.
Whilst I believe talking about body
image to another person is important,
I understand why someone wouldn’t
want to speak about how they feel.
So instead, write down your feelings
and thoughts, then listen to people
who talk about body image in a
supportive environment (I would
listen to Tedtalks too). You can start
to evaluate why you feel certain
things about why you have body
image issues, but you must look
at your situation from a different
point of view. Which Tedtalks, books,
podcasts etc can be wonderful for,
when reaching out for a different
perspective. These are things I have
found helpful and I hope I can help
other people to accept themselves.
The society we have currently can
be beautiful, kind, and incredible.
However, there are still many
downsides to the world we live in. I
believe that to change the world it
must start small. If anyone you know
is struggling, if you are struggling,
I challenge you to challenge your
thoughts. Why do you think you have
to look a certain way?
When I challenged my thinking, it took
all the power my damaging thoughts
had and made these thoughts
nothing but… thoughts. By taking the
power away I could think objectively
about why I felt the way I did, and
this gave me a sense of security that
I wasn’t crazy, or weird. I know that
talking about body image can be
difficult, so if you don’t feel ready to
speak about it, then try out the things
I said earlier in this article. As the
one person we must live with for the
rest of our lives is… ourselves. The
person who understands you best is
yourself. It may not be as easy as you
think, and if its difficult to even write
down your feelings. Take your time,
breathe, and know everything will be
okay. These thoughts and feelings
will not last forever, you will grow into
the best version of yourself and last
of all…
I believe in you.

Looking After Yourself
This Christmas
BY RACHEL MITCHELL
We’ve all been holding out for a
better end to 2020, having endured
lockdown after lockdown and
tiers that have prevented us from
seeing family, friends and taking
part in anything remotely ‘normal’,
and as Christmas approaches, the
circumstances are and will be still
very challenging for many.
During this time, it’s important to
look after ourselves, both physically
and mentally. We often talk about
the importance of keeping physically
healthy; active, getting plenty of rest,
and a good diet, but this also applies
to our minds. The two work together.
Our brains are really powerful and
are responsible for a lot when it
comes to our own mental health and
wellbeing.
You may have heard of the concept
of a mental health continuum. This
concept talks of the idea that we
can move up and down between
maximum wellbeing and poor
wellbeing, as well as horizontally
between no diagnosis and diagnosis.
We can move all around this
continuum over a period of years,
months, weeks and even days and
this is largely affected by what’s going
on in our lives and how we can cope
with challenges we may face.
I mention this as it’s likely during this
festive time and into the new year, we
will find ourselves moving around the
continuum. This is very normal, yet
not always very well understood, but
the importance is in the recognition
and self-awareness of possible
changes in our mood, behaviour
and environment that may have a
negative impact on our wellbeing.
Once we begin to understand
what may be ‘usual’ behaviour and
emotions for ourselves, we will then
be able to identify when patterns
start to change.
This is why effective support and selfcare
is crucial as it’s these things that
will positivity affect our mental health
when we start to notice or feel like

we’re moving down the continuum.

support is available and what can we

FOOD
CO-EDITOR AARON BEAVIS
The Hitchhiker’s Guide To
Vegetarianism
BY AARON BEAVIS
From those interested in dropping meat from their diet to those who are interested
to know if all those things they hear about vegetarian food are true, this guide is
designed to help you understand a little bit better what it is actually like to be a
vegetarian. Others will likely have different experiences to me as our species is yet
to become one collective conscious, but this will cover the general assumptions
about us.
“YOU DON’T EAT EGGS AND
DAIRY THEN?”
Typically, people who don’t eat
eggs and dairy identify as vegan
although that’s not always the case.
Most people you meet will probably
eat those items though. Asking
this question is helpful though as
long as you try to avoid sounding
judgemental when you say it.
“HOW DO YOU GET PROTEIN?”
Well, it depends on what you
like. Obviously, there are meat
supplements like Quorn or protein
supplements designed for cooking
and baking but there’s beans (my
personal favourites), quinoa, nuts,
chickpeas and even garden peas.
“ISN’T VEGETARIAN FOOD REALLY
EXPENSIVE?”
Well, it can be. It can be just as
expensive as non-vegetarian
products, it simply depends on
your tastes and ability to find a
good bargain. That feeling when
you decide to splash out and get
something from the extra fancy,
extra pricey range and realise it
tastes the same if not worse than
your favourite, cheaper brand’s
version of the same product? That is
not an exclusive meat-eater feeling
I’m afraid. We are all cursed by it.
57 • 57 MARCH • FOOD 2019 • STUDENT • LIFE LIFE
“DO YOU JUST EAT SALADS
NOW?”
Well, that is more typically aimed
at vegans but when I decided to
become vegetarian, I had that
comment or a variation there
of at least 5 times. If you think
about what you have on your
plate (probably some kind of meat
based product, a side which could
be potato-based and then maybe
some vegetables) and then take off
the meat part, you still have the
side and the vegetables. And, as
much as I would eat a meal which
consisted of onion rings and a salad
with chilli lime dressing, there are
plenty of things you could replace
the meat with. You could use a
meat replacement – I think fake cod
is surprisingly good – but you can
also take meat-based dishes like a
lasagne and use other items instead.
I’d actually suggest even those who
still want to eat meat try out stuff
like vegetable lasagnes because it
adds some variety to a classic dish.
“DOES FAKE MEAT TASTE LIKE THE
REAL THING?”
I won’t lie. I’ve had some borderline
traumatic experiences with meat
substitutes. Once I had a not-chicken
burger which replicated all the worst
possible attributes a piece of chicken
could have and none of the nice stuff.
To add insult to injury, the coating
wasn’t even nice. However, I’ve found
it was a pretty isolated incident. I
continue to be surprised by how
nice a lot of that stuff is. In terms
of accuracy, I’ve found that really,
REALLY varies between who you ask. I
think there are a lot of products which
really do taste like the real thing and
some get every aspect (including
texture and appearance) spot-on
however, whenever I try a new one,
I always get into a headspace of just
thinking about whether I like how it
tastes rather than how accurate it is.
“What do you order at restaurants?”
Thankfully for us veggies, the vast
majority of restaurants now serve
vegetarian options. Sometimes it
is a case of there being only one
option which can be disappointing
if you don’t like said option but
most of them have at least a couple
of different options. Nando’s in
particular has had a lot of different
menu items for a while now. Fast
food joints have also dipped their
toes in the meat-free waters of
vegetarianism, even if at an extremely
cautious pace, but I will admit
sometimes it is a ‘guess I’ll just order
chips’ situation.
I hope that scratching the surface of
this dietary choice has educated you
a little bit on what it is actually like
for a vegetarian beyond what some
stereotypes might make you believe.
Seriously, fake cod can be convincing
in an almost scary fashion.

GLORIA DARGATZ
It Be Like That
Sometimes
BY GLORIA DARGATZ
Do you sometimes wake up in the
morning and feel like there is no
real purpose to get started into
your day? You don´t understand,
why you should get out of bed, go
to school, go to work or meet that
friend because you just don´t feel
like doing anything.
Do you sometimes get frustrated
and sad, because of “no” obvious
reason? Do you sometimes feel like
the world does not want you to be
happy and does not give you any
motivation to keep going during a
certain time?
Do you?
Because I am here to tell you, that
I do too. Sometimes, I wake up and
I feel like life is pulling me down.
Although I am so grateful for what
I have been given, I feel down on
some days, too.
It is totally normal to wake up
with no motivation and lack of
happiness. It is totally normal to
feel down on certain days or even
for a certain period of time. We all
go through times, where life does
not seem to make any sense, where
life seems to pull us down and does
not want to understand us. We´ve
all been there, some of us more,
59 59 • • MARCH MY LIFE 2019 • • STUDENT LIFE LIFE
some of us less often.
It is okay to feel this kind of way, it
is normal.
But because we all feel that way
at some point(s) of our life, it is so
important that we are there for
those who feel down and sad right
now. That we are supporting others,
listening to them and starting to
treat others the way we want to be
treated.
We often don´t show that we are
frustrated and do not feel the best
when we do. We often do not tell
others around us about our feelings.
But because of that, that we don´t
always demonstrate our inner self, it
is so important that you are always
there for others, no matter if they
seem to be sad and not feeling their
best or don´t. Because sometimes
the people with the brightest smiles
feel the saddest and loneliest.
Sometimes you are one of them. So
treat others the way you want to be
treated on the days you feel down
because you never know how their
day is going.
If you feel lonely and sad, look out
for people you can talk to, search for
advice and for people you can trust,
go for a walk, take time for yourself
and try to find something, that makes
you happy.
If you feel like you feel down for
a longer period of time you might
consider looking out for professional
help, that can support you.
You are never alone, remember
that.

WS Training -
How Amazing!
BY LAURA WOOTTON
HOW I FELT?
INTRODUCTION
Here we are at WS Training. In this
article I am going to talk to you
about my experience of being at
WS Training and I will share with
you my experience of being in this
environment as a whole.
WHEN DID I START?
When I first started at WS Training I
felt very nervous. I also questioned
myself whether the staff and
teachers were going to understand
me. Fortunately they did and I
was welcomed with open arms. It
gradually felt like home and as soon
as it felt like that I settled in nicely.
WHAT WERE THE TEACHERS LIKE?
I was welcomed with open arms
and the teachers were so pleasant
to be around. I made new friends
and that’s when I was certain that
not only I would get on with the
teachers but I would also be able to
enjoy my experience here with other
61 61 • • MARCH MY LIFE 2019 • • STUDENT LIFE LIFE
people. The teachers were also very
understanding and polite. You could
tell they were because of the way they
spoke and the expressions on their
faces. I felt like I could approach them
and speak to them without them
getting cross with me.
WHAT HAVE I LEARNT?
All the things I learnt were connected
with work-based topics so; how to
answer a customer caller and how to
work as a team, which we learnt by
doing problem solving tasks that were
given to us by the teacher. We also
learnt how to deal with customers
face to face if you encountered nasty
and badly mannered customers.
When I was in the cooking group, I
also worked with others and cooked
meals for the students and teachers.
As well, I ran the tuck shop and
the till and had to take payments
for people’s lunches. We would go
around and ask people what they
wanted for lunch whilst giving them
a choice of what to eat and then took
orders of what they chose from the
options given. In addition to all of
that, we all took turns in washing and
drying up, checking dates on food
labels, cleaning out the fridge when
needed and generally cleaning and
tidying the kitchen.
Team Building skills were also
included in Mark Wyatt’s group. The
team building skills task was to work
as a team to say all of the numbers
in order and do this in the quickest
time we could. The way it worked was
that we would lay all the numbers
out on the floor and then with all of
the students we would make a circle
around these numbers. Depending
on where you were around the circle,
you would choose the numbers that
you knew you could reach quickly.
Unfortunately, some people had
numbers that were further away
from them. We were all sitting on
chairs and obviously we only had one
pair of hands which meant that we
needed to use our feet and any other
body parts we could possibly use.
Sometimes we would beat the time,
meaning we would beat the quickest
time achieveable for doing the task so
then we would carry on getting better
and better. If we didn’t beat the time
we would carry on as a group with the
task given until we could beat it. This
was a very good example of a team
building task which included problem
solving by working out who was going
to do what.
We raised money for The St Elizabeth
Hospice children’s charity so we
could have our own statuette of the
elephant Elmer. The Elmer Project
was not just going on in WS training
but it was going on in other schools
and other places. The task was to
design your own patterned Elmer
with a design of your choice. We were
given a sheet with a blank outline of
62 62 •• MARCH ISSUE 2019 40 •• STUDENT LIFE LIFE
the Elmer shaped elephant which we
drew a pattern in and filled up the
space in the shape. In our project we
also included an Elmer trail which
included Elmer Statuettes scattered
around Ipswich. There was a shop
to raise money for this activity which
you could buy merchandised items
like a pencil that had Elmer on it, or
you could buy an Elmer elephant
cuddly toy. Included in the project
was a book which you could collect
Elmer on a sticker which you would
purchase, adding them on each time
you saw an elephant and the ones
you didn’t have you could swap with
others.
At WS, an important task we needed
to do, is to make sure that all the
floors were cleaned to stop the
prevention of slipping. This task
was in the dining hall as well as the
kitchen. The tables also needed
cleaning as well as the chairs. At the
end of the day was to plan what we
were going to cook and sometimes
we would go around and actually ask
people’s suggestions on what they
would like the students to cook for
them.
Last but not least we also took orders
for teas and coffees and we would
write their name down and with what
drink they wanted including how
much milk and how many sugars they
wanted.
HOW WERE THE DAYS
STRUCTURED?
Each day was structured by starting
the day at 9:30. We would then begin
lessons and then break would arrive
at 10:45. For break we would have
15 minutes to have a little something
to eat, something to drink and then
a toilet break so we were feeling
refreshed to start the next lesson of
the day at 11:00. So, as soon as break
finished we would then go back into
class and work. When lunchtime hit
we would go and have something
to eat. Some people go out for their
lunch but some people take a packed
lunch with them and eat it in the café
dining area. Our lunch would last for
30 minutes until we had to go back to
class which is at 1:00. At 2:00 we have
a 15 minute break before we have
to go back at 2:15. Then last but not
least, we would have the final part of
class at 2:15 and then it will be home
time finishing at 3:00 pm.
63 63 • • MARCH MY LIFE 2019 • • STUDENT LIFE LIFE
HOW DID I CHANGE AND EVOLVE?
Personally, I evolved by being more
confident and independent whilst
having the ability to talk on my own
in front of a big amount of people.
For example, when I performed in the
end of year performance, which I had
to announce all the performances
and read my poem which I made
when I went to NCS. Since then, I have
no longer been afraid of speaking in
front of a big audience and if I had to
do this again then I would because I
now have not just the ability but the
confidence to speak out loud.
WHAT HAVE I LEARNT ABOUT
MYSELF?
During the time I have been here, I
have taught myself that I can be more
confident and now I am confident
because I have proved to myself that
I can speak in front of an audience
without getting nervous. I have also
learnt how to be independent on my
own, meaning doing things without
having to have support or guidance
from others.
WHY WOULD I RECOMMEND WS
TO OTHERS?
I would recommend WS to others
because it would change anybody’s
life for the better. Even if your life was
ok and didn’t need changing, it would
still give you a good boost to bump
up your courage and independence
as well as your confidence which is
important. I generally think that it is
suitable for everyone because it gives
you extra reassurance to be and to do
the best you can in life.
CONCLUSION
My final conclusion to my thoughts
are that anybody who is going into
the big wide world of business should
recommend going to WS Training
because there are kind people that
can support you and you can gain a
lot of knowledge that changes you
from start to finish. You can walk
out, reassuring yourself that you
can do whatever you want to do,
be whatever you want to be and go
wherever you want to go, as well
as changing however you want to
change.

LGBT
CO-EDITOR RAINE HATCH
LGBTQs
BY RAINE HATCH
Hello! Let’s play a game of ‘who am
I’ (not the existential kind. Maybe
later, though). As your new LGBT+
co-editor, Raine, I’m using our
first LGBTQ’s session together to
introduce to you what I’m all about,
so that hopefully, you may feel
comfortable introducing yourself
and your story to me in return. Let’s
begin!
HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY EXACTLY?
As of today, I am a girl, attracted
to girls. I am also attracted to the
prospect of a student debt-free life,
but it’s tricky to get either these days,
huh.
To be upfront, labels sit weirdly with
me. ‘Lesbian’ is what I tell people, how
I relate to those sweet LGBT+ memes,
what I put under ‘current employment
status’ in my CV and so on – but in
the end, I am Raine. Some days, I just
want to cuddle and marathon 2000’s
British sitcoms with anybody nice, I
don’t mind! Others, I get this superintrusive
urge to start a cat empire
with any cute girl who smiles my
way. I also like to wear a chest binder
because it gives me confidence. But
does that mean I must embark on
some spiralling quest to find the label
for me? Long story short: CBA.
ARE YOU OUT OF THE CLOSET?
My definition may vary to yours.
Being ‘out’ to me is a state of mind;
fully accepting the person you are on
the inside, you’ll feel free to radiate
that energy on the outside for all the
world to see. In that sense, I’m out
to everybody. I am a power-walking,
high-heeled queer on a mission to
(consensually) steal your lady. Boom.
Well, I’m out to everybody, except for
my parents. They are not to know for
as long as I live under their roof, and I
have made peace with this fact.
HOW DO YOU COPE WITH
HAVING TO HIDE YOUR QUEER
IDENTITY FROM YOUR FAMILY?
I accept that it’s going to suck. It’s
65 • 65 MARCH • LGBT 2019 • STUDENT • STUDENT LIFE LIFE
unfair, it’s frustrating, and it hurts
that a big part of my life will need
to be kept under wraps due to one
petty judgement – on who I love, of
all the things in this country to be
disappointed by!
I hold onto the fact that I have no
obligation to tell anybody anything
– not even family – just as if I were
straight. You realise after a while that
actually, their negative opinions are
not your problem. Your heart is for
accommodating love and kindness,
not spite. Draw empowerment
from the whole LGBT+ family
behind you; every single one of us
has experienced rejection in some
form or another, but together, we
overcome it!
My advice is to fill your daily
good-vibes quota by seeking out
friends who’ll treat you the same
no matter what. Know your worth
unapologetically, and let that guide
you towards the right crowd.
TL;DR: I recommend Häagen-Dazs’
strawberry cheesecake ice cream,
460ml.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH
YOUR LIFE?
Somebody once said to me, ‘We need
more young people who believe they
can change the world.’
That person was my former
psychologist, and I want to follow
in her footsteps. As cliché as this’ll
sound, if I can change the world for
even just one person with my work…
I’ll be satisfied.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT
BEING LGBTQ+?
I could say, ‘being a part of something
bigger’, ‘our vibrant and diverse
community’, or, ‘having the honour
of being your LGBT+ co-editor’,
whatever. I could pour unto thee
mine darndest soliloquy about how
wonderful it is to support and be
supported by a culture that at its core,
embraces being yourself.
But I won’t lie to you. One word:
gaydar. My mind operates in a way
that never lets me see only ‘one face’
in a person; there’s always more
beneath the surface. Piecing together
mannerisms, speech, tiny details…
I get kind of excited thinking of all
these pointless correlations, like
Sherlock Homo, searching for allies…
So, who am I? (Apart from a creep).
While our views, situations or ice
cream preferences may differ, what
matters is, I dream. I struggle. I
change. And I love. The answer is: I
am just like you, and I look forward to
meeting you.
Have any burning LGBTQ’s? Want to
vent your secrets, tell me some good
news, say hi or start the Bobtail kitten
revolution with me? I’m always down!
Hit me up at raine@student-life.co
and you could be featured here, too!
Thanks for reading. Until next time!

CO-EDITOR ADRIANNA GNIFKA
How To Successfully
Budget and Prepare
Yourself for Christmas
BY ADRIANNA GNIFKA
Whether you are making Christmas a
low-key affair this year or still going all
out despite the possible limitations of
a pandemic, it’s a well-known fact that
Christmas involves a lot of planning.
Though the main purpose of this
article is to help you gain control of
your finances during a time of year
when all that we as consumers do
is spend, a lot of what I will mention
can be applied to any part of your
life at any time (not just Christmas),
since most of it comes down to
organisation and planning.
The first and probably most
important rule of budgeting for
anything is to grab a pen and some
paper, or even the notes app on your
phone and make lists. Personally,
lists are something that I live by - to
the point that if you walked into my
room you would find many post-it
notes with numerous and endless
to-do lists. Even my phone is filled
with hundreds of things in the notes
app that need to be deleted. Do they
always help? Possibly not, due to
my own procrastination, but when it
comes to budgeting there is nothing
I could recommend more. Budgeting
with lists especially around Christmas
is something I’ve been doing these
past few years and has worked for me
without fail, keeping me on track with
my spending since I would tick things
off as I bought them. When used in
combination with an online banking
app, it makes sure that you don’t
go over your limits or get carried
away with Christmas shopping – my
weaknesses are always the cute little
stocking fillers that add up to way too
much.
69 69 ••MY MARCH MONEY 2019 • STUDENT LIFE
If you are struggling with setting
specific limits then simply create a
rough outline of how much you would
like to spend on each person’s gifts.
If you’re worried about going over
your limit, then either go back to
your initial planning stage and try to
make some small cuts or add a sort
of financial cushion to the end of your
list which could be used to cover costs
for any extras (whether it’s a gift for
the dog or some new Christmas décor
for the house).
Another tip would be to start planning
and buying anything Christmas
related as early as possible to prevent
it from getting too chaotic later on,
but if you only start thinking about
Christmas once it gets to December
like me, then there’s still hope! You
may have had a look at the many
online sales that have been going on
recently as part of Black Friday and
Cyber Monday, especially since stores
have been shut during the lockdown,
but if you’re still missing some
Christmas gifts for others, you should
take advantage of the offers and
discounts that most stores should
continue having over the next week.
It’s not a surprise that this year might
be one of the roughest Christmases
because of the economic downturn
as well as the devastating effects of
COVID on the health of many of our
loved ones, so equally it’s no surprise
that we might not be so well prepared
for Christmas this year. But if you
want to ensure a decent budget for
next year then it’s never too early
to start saving, so perhaps start a
specific savings account dedicated
to next year’s Christmas shop?
Nowadays it’s something that can be
done in as little as ten minutes on
most online banking apps – but make
sure to research which options are
best for you.
