The Word on the Street

haddonfield.today | 3

This most unusual and

unpredictable year is

drawing to a close.

Will your New Year’s Eve

be different this year,

and if so, how?

“In a normal year,”

reflects SHEN

SHELLENBERGER

of Cherry Hill, “we

would go out to

dinner with friends.

Not this year.” So

how does Shen plan

to celebrate? “A quiet

dinner at home, until

midnight. Then we’ll

bang pots and pans,

as usual, and wake

the neighbors.”

“In the past, my wife

and I have gone out

for dinner and drinks

with friends,” says

KEVIN CREIGHTON

of West Chester PA.

This year? “A quiet

night at home. We’re

too old to party.

Well ... I am, anyway.”

“Very different!”

says RAY HOOLEY

of Cherry Hill. “We

usually go to a

family member’s

home in Merion PA,

with 60 to 70 other

people. Not this year,

especially with our

newborn.”

Cherry Hill’s JIM

WALSH will be

happy to spend the

evening at home

with his wife, Julie.

“The kids won’t be

coming home for the

holidays, so it will

be just the two of us.

Music and a movie.”

Haddonfield’s JOE

LEVINE plans to

stay at home with

his immediate

family. “We’ll toast

the arrival of the

vaccine,” he says,

“reflect on how

incredibly fortunate

we are, and hope for

a much better 2021

for all.”

“Typically, our family

would be having

a ball in Chicago,”

says AIMEE

SUBRUMANIAN of

Haddonfield. Aimee

and her husband

lived there for eight

years after they

were married. “We

love going back,”

she says. “But not in

2020.”

Middle School

closes (COVID)

The Superintendent

of Schools announced

on Tue Dec 15 that the

Middle School would

close from Wed Dec 16

thru Wed Dec 23.

“This decision was

made after consulting

with the Camden County

Department of Health,”

Superintendent Chuck

Klaus wrote in a letter to

parents, guardians, and

the school community.

“Factors to close

included 6 confirmed

COVID+ cases in the

last 4 days, 4 of which

involved contact tracing

and quarantines due

to close contacts.

Additionally, there

has been a significant

decrease in the number

of students physically in

school due to quarantine

and an increase in

requests for full virtual

instruction. The

educational benefit of

having significantly more

students virtual and

fewer students in person

also played a role in this

decision.

“Keeping the safety

and wellness of our

students and staff as our

top priority, we believe

implementing the full

virtual model is the

optimal way to proceed.

...

“This decision was

not arrived at easily. We

hoped to stay the course

and continue to offer

in-person instruction;

however, it became

evident that the best

course of action was to

take these precautionary

steps.”

The elementary

schools and the High

School remain open,

operating in the hybrid

model.

True news:

Free parking!

Again this year,

the Commissioners

are supporting the

business district by

bagging parking meters

and kiosks between

Thanksgiving and

Christmas Day. It is

hoped that free parking

will entice shoppers to

visit ... and spend!

Mask sales will help fund cleft palate surgeries

The Haddonfield-based orthodontic practice of Dr. Amy James and

Associates is promoting the sale of “Smile” masks.

Proceeds will benefit Rotaplast International, which sends teams of volunteer

dental surgeons and nurses around the world to treat children with cleft

anomalies. Dr, James herself has been a member of three such teams.

Like many nonprofit organizations, Rotaplast faces challenges posed by

the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing this, Dr. James and her team decided to

find a way to not only raise funds for Rotaplast, but to raise awareness of the

organization itself. Scan the QR code n for a 30-second snapshot video.

Rotaplast was founded in 1992 by a dentist who at the time was the president

of the Rotary Club of San Francisco. Since its founding, Rotaplast has carried

out more than 200 missions serving over 17,000 children in 26 countries.

The idea behind this new fund-raiser involves sharing smiles.

“By purchasing these

masks, people are

giving smiles to children

around the world,” Dr.

James said. “And by

wearing these masks,

they are encouraging

others to smile.”

A stroll down a lane of lights

Residents of Evergreen Lane have banded together to share their celebration

of the season with the entire community. They’ve created a Holiday Light Stroll

along their street, from Kings Highway to the area of Tatem School.

The aim is two-fold: To bring holiday cheer to friends and neighbors, and to

collect socks for those in need. Donations of new socks will be accepted in a

bin on the porch of 2 Evergreen Lane to benefit Knock Knock Give a Sock. If you

wish to donate dollars online, go here: bit.ly/3m72drp or scan the QR code n.

Evergreen Lane is a compact street of about 50 homes, tucked away between

Kings Highway and Grove Street. The Lane of Lights kicked off at dusk on Fri

Dec 11. A good place to start your stroll is the Children’s Sculpture Zoo at

Tatem Memorial Garden (corner of Evergreen and Kings Highway – between the

Haddon Fortnightly and the High School).

The lights will remain on nightly through New Year 2021.

Chipping of Christmas trees

Q: When’s the best time to kick your Christmas

tree to the curb?

A: After New Year’s Day, because the Public Works

Department will begin chipping Christmas trees

during the first week of January.

Since the work is dependent on the weather,

staffing, and the availability of equipment, there is

no schedule. Just put your tree out early in 2021.

However ... be sure to remove the tree stand and

all decorations (including lights, ornaments, and

tinsel). Also ... do not put your tree in a plastic bag.

Non-conforming trees will not be picked up.

Seasonal choral concert

ChildrenSong of New Jersey will present a virtual concert titled ‘Season of

Light’ on Sun Dec 20 at 3pm. The choir’s music will celebrate the significance

of light during the winter holiday season. Light can represent both religious

and non-spiritual winter events such as Christmas, Hanukkah, Santa Lucia,

Kwanzaa, and the winter solstice. During winter festivities, people sing, dance,

decorate, and incorporate some sort of light into their celebrations, be it the

moon, fires, candles, or electric lights.

This concert will feature ChildrenSong singers age 8 to 18 who participate

virtually in weekly rehearsals with professional musicians Polly Murray, Esther

Chen, and Nick Watts.

The suggested donation is $10 per adult, payable by venmo @childrensong

or by check to ChildrenSong of NJ, PO Box 134, Haddonfield, NJ 08033. A Zoom

link will be emailed on receipt of payment. Questions? info@childrensong.org.

HMHS Madrigals: The (drive-in) movie!

Undeterred by the impossibility of presenting their annual Dessert Theater

indoors as usual each December, the High School Madrigal Singers have

developed an alternative way for the community to enjoy the music and

merriment of the season.

The Madrigals will perform at the “Royal Court” on Sat Jan 9 but on this

occasion it will be staged in the parking lot of the Wedgewood Swim Club (635

Centre Street) as a drive-in movie experience.

As usual, the show will feature songs and dances of the season, a comedy

guaranteed to amuse and entertain, a wassail toast, the regal presentation of

the boar’s head, and pre-packaged desserts to enjoy from the comfort and

privacy of your vehicle.

Under the direction of HMHS choir director Tyler Mills, the student singers

will appear in Renaissance-inspired costumes as they present a variety of

madrigal songs – pieces of vocal music that originated in France and England.

Since the troupe’s inaugural season in 1997, the HMHS Madrigal Singers

have performed at the White House, the National Cathedral in Washington DC,

the Kimmel Center, and Longwood Gardens. January 9 will be the first time a

Madrigals’ performance has been staged as a drive-in movie.

Guests can count on some interesting twists on the classics, as the Singers

are incorporating creative filmmaking and editing techniques to bring their

performance from stage to screen.

The 2020-21 troupe of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors includes:

• Soprano I: Anna Forebaugh, Jane Kinney, Shaelin McKenna and Kiki Shim

• Soprano II: Brynne Gaffney, Samantha Kehner, Katie Poliero and Tess Smith

• Alto I: Salena Chaco, Hanna Epstein, Mary Herdelin and MaryClare Michael

• Alto II: Katrina Edwards, Valerie Goetter, Arabella Nobel and Marisol Russo

• Tenor I: Griffin Adams and Abdullah Khalid

• Tenor II: Jack Eyles and Nick Volpe

• Bass I: Harry George, Joseph Keegan and Luc Ljoka

• Bass II: Billy Impagliazzo, TJ Smith, and Scott Vaughn.

• Royal Court is comprised of Queen Anna Forebaugh, King Abdullah Khalid,

and Jester Katrina Edwards.

All are invited to attend this special part of Haddonfield’s hometown holiday

tradition. There will be two shows on Sat Jan 9 – 6pm and 9pm – with a limit of

34 vehicles per show.

Tickets are $25 per vehicle. Additional donations are encouraged and

appreciated, and will help provide scholarships for graduating Madrigals.

Cover Story

Light up with luminarias

Interfaith Caregivers’ annual Holiday House Tour

was paused this year, for safety reasons.

In place of this major fund-raiser, the organization

is offering two new ways to support its mission and

add some joy during the holiday season.

• A “glass” holiday ornament engraved with a

pearl of wisdom: “Do Small Things with Great Love.”

Each ornament comes in a presentation box and,

the sponsors say, “will make a fine addition to your

tree trimming and a wonderful gift for family and

friends.” The cost is $20.

• Custom luminarias with candles, to

symbolically light the way for a better 2021.

Interfaith Caregivers hopes its supporters and

residents will display the luminarias outside their

homes on New Year’s Eve. The bags, which carry a

snowflake design, are $20 for a pack of ten. “Join in

the fun and light up your neighborhood.”

To order ornaments and luminarias, email

rloiseau@ifchaddons.org or call at 856-354-0298,

9am to 5pm, weekdays.

Alternatively, stop by Weichert Realtors (132

Kings Hwy E) on Sat Dec 19 – 11am to 2pm – to

place orders with Interfaith volunteers. (Chat with

them about the rewards of volunteering!)

Note: Ornaments are in short supply, so don’t

dally. There was a run on bags, but rest assured

– they will be available again before New Year’s Eve.

Kiwanis donates to pantries

The Kiwanis Club of the Haddons presented

checks recently to Bellmawr Mayor Charles Sauter

and to Barrington Municipal Clerk Terry Shannon.

Each municipality will distribute the funds to food

pantries serving their residents.

The NJ District of Kiwanis Foundation offered

competitive grants to Kiwanis Clubs throughout the

state that showed a dedicated effort in combating

food insecurity locally. The Kiwanis Club of the

Haddons secured two $150 grants.

During 2020, the club donated more than $1,000

to food pantries in Barrington, Bellmawr, Camden,

Cherry Hill, and Collingswood. The club also

provided financial support and in-kind gifts to

Dubin House, Cherry Hill Public Schools, Cathedral

Kitchen, and the Ronald McDonald House.

For Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service on Mon

Jan 18, 2021, the Kiwanis Club is planning several

no-contact food drives to serve food banks in

the area. For details on how to participate, go to

facebook.com/HaddonsKiwanis.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers

dedicated to improving the world one child and

one community at a time. The club meets every

Friday from 12:15 to 1:30pm via conference call to

plan and carry out service projects, and invites area

adults to join. For meeting and club information,

A gift for dad

Is your father one of

those dads who says, in

advance of the holidays,

“I don’t need any gifts”

and “I’ve got everything I

need”?

Is he retired?

If so, the 65 Club has

the perfect gift for you

to give and for him

to receive: A year’s

membership!

Annual dues are just

$20 – less than 40¢ a

week. And the club has

a variety of activities

and programs that even

a stick-in-the-mud will

enjoy.

In normal times,

the group meets at its

clubhouse on Rhoads

Avenue. Recently,

it’s been meeting

– with masks and social

distancing protocols

– in the Borough Hall

auditorium. But with

neither of those venues

currently available,

members are signing on

to Zoom each Thursday

at 1:30pm.

Meetings feature

informative, entertaining

speakers who provide

members and guests

the opportunity to

listen, learn, and inquire;

great fellowship; and

occasionally some

colorful stories and

jokes.

In normal times,

activities include

bridge on Mondays,

trips on Tuesdays, tai

chi and pinochle on

Wednesdays, bowling on

Friday, and golf (spring

thru fall) at nine local

courses.

membership, go to

Lions name essay winners

A student at Christ the King Regional School

has been awarded first place in an essay contest

sponsored by Lions District 16-L.

Marley McCourt, an eighth-grade student, won

for her essay on the topic “Peace During the

COVID-19 Pandemic.” Phoebe Rynkar, a student at

Haddonfield Middle School, also was recognized

for her essay. Both students will receive monetary

prizes from the Lions.

McCourt, who lives in Atco, wrote about

volunteering during the pandemic and doing things

that gave people joy. She helped at her local horse

farm and at times took one of the farm’s miniature

horses out walking to brighten people’s day: “...

elderly couples sitting on their front porches, kids

playing in their yards, cars passing by, and police

officers that we walked by all smiled. The moral of

the story is that even though it may seem like the

end of the world, there is still joy and felicity. Joy is

what brings peace to the world.”

Rynkar wrote about the many definitions of

peace and all the people who are spreading peace

during the pandemic. “Some of the peace is just

people doing their part. When you wear a mask,

you are spreading peace.” Phoebe continued:

“Something amazing about peace is that it does

not discriminate. Peace isn’t just for the wealthy or

presumed perfect, peace is for everyone. Especially

right now.”

Time to register Fido and Fritz

The owners of dogs and cats are required to

obtain licences for them annually, in January.

months of age; kittens when they reach seven

months.

will be applied from Mon Feb 1.

New pets should be registered when they join the

household, regardless of the time of year.

Workshops on anxiety in children

The Haddonfield Education Association is preparing to sponsor two

workshops designed to help parents identify signs of anxiety in their children

and to support their children’s mental health during the pandemic.

The first presentation, scheduled for Wed Jan 20 at 7pm and titled Anxiety

in Children, is for parents of children in preschool through grade 8.

The second presentation, titled Anxiety in Adolescents and set for Wed Feb 3

at 7pm, is for parents of children in grades 9 thru 12.

Both presentations will be conducted via Zoom by Dr. Phillip C. Kendall,

Distinguished University Professor, Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders

Clinic at Temple University.

Although each workshop is self-contained, interested parents are welcome to

register for both presentations, if they wish. Go here: bit.ly/3mbmooa. Scan n.

The Zoom link will be sent to registrants about 24 hours prior to each

presentation date.

The first 20 people to register for (and attend) either session will receive one

of the following books, courtesy the Haddonfield Education Association and

Inkwood Books:

• For parents of preschool to grade 8 students: Me and My Feelings: A Kid’s

Guide to Understanding and Expressing Themselves.

• For parents of grades 9 to 12 students: Permission to Feel: Unlocking the

Power of Emotion to Help our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive by Marc

Brackett, PhD.

Questions may be submitted up to seven days prior to the presentation

– here: bit.ly/3mbmooa. n – and also may be asked during Q&A time on Zoom.

These presentations reflect the School District’s commitment to socialemotional

learning and the social-emotional health of students and staff.
