Dragon Pride A Look Back to Duke School’s Participation in the 2019 Durham Pride Parade On September 28, 2019, almost 200 Duke School students, alumni, family members, staff members and friends joined the Durham Pride parade at Duke University’s East Campus. This was Duke School’s second year taking part in the annual parade, and the first year that students from the school’s Gender- Sexuality Alliance (GSA) helped coordinate the school’s participation. “It seemed like a really nice opportunity to have the students take on a leadership role,” said Middle School Counselor Rachel Wertheimer. GSA members—guided by Rachel, Ben Felton, Middle School language arts and project teacher, and T Land, Duke School parent—began planning in spring 2019 how the school would participate in Pride. On the day, Duke School’s group marched alongside Equality NC thanks to T’s connections with the organization. To make the event even 14 UNDER THE OAK more exciting for Duke School marchers, the GSA prepared sign-making materials and packed goodie bags with rainbow-colored dragon stickers, temporary tattoos, crayons and candy. “Part of doing this work is teaching students that they have voices, that they can be activists, that they can make change happen...” The GSA includes students who are committed to helping make Duke School a more inclusive and welcoming place for LGBTQIA+ individuals, regardless of their own identities. To see those values celebrated on a large scale at Pride can be very exciting, Rachel said. “I think for students—particularly students who are in GSA and for whom those values are really central and something they’ve prioritized in their life—seeing that all around them … is very affirming,” she said. By marching with Duke School’s group, students, staff, and families also are “choosing to be part of the position that Duke School has, that we are an inclusive school and we want to show those values,” said Ben.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the parade in 2020, the GSA advisors say the group is excited about participating in Pride in the future. “Part of doing this work is teaching students that they have voices, that they can be activists, that they can make change happen,” said Ben. “I think to have something like the Pride parade to anchor them to it is very inspiring and proof that the work that they’re doing here in school really does have impacts and matters.”
