Sadly, westill find the wrong things in the wrong bin andsome items just keep reappearing – we can’trecycle takeaway pizza boxes, garden waste,plastic bags, plastic coat hangers or nappiesso please put them in your general householdbin and put garden waste in your green bin ortake it to the tip.But what is contaminated recycling? Why does itmatter and can one plastic bag in the wrong placereally make a difference?What is contaminated recycling?If you put something in the wrong bin or containerthen it’s classed as contaminated.Why does it matter?Putting a couple of plastic bags or some food wastein the wrong bin might not seem like a big deal but itonly takes a few contaminated bins emptied into thesame wagon and the whole lot can’t be recycled.What happens to contaminatedrecycling?Contaminated recycling is treated in the sameway as your general household waste – themajority is turned into fuel which is used incermet production but some may end upin landfill. We get paid for every tonne ofrecycling we collect but we have to pay to havecontaminated loads treated and sorted – moneywhich we could be spending on a whole range ofother services.Not sorting your recyclingwastes money, effort and is badfor the environment.We know it can be confusing to know what goesin which bin – look at the sticker on your bin orcheck out our website www.darlington.gov.uk/recycleright where you can alsofind the answers to some frequentlyasked questions and find out whatwe can recycle and why.26 www.darlington.gov.uk/recycleright
GARDEN WASTECOLLECTIONDon’t miss out –sign up ONLINEMore than 7,160 householders signed up for garden wastecollections last year with around 1,640 tonnes of gardenwaste collected and recycled as fertiliser.The service will runagain this year, withcollections fromApril to December.If you want to continue with the service,complete a renewal form, and pay£36 annual fee online.There is also a separate form for thosewanting to sign up for the first time.Full details will be available online later this month atwww.darlington.gov.uk/gardenwastePlease ensure you complete the correct form – for renewal or new sign up.
