PRE-COLLEGE WORKSHOPS
COVID-19: EXPLORING UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES OF THE
PANDEMIC
Examine COVID-19 through the many lenses of public health in an
interdisciplinary case study. Case studies in areas like food security
and mental health will help you explore the social determinants of
health, unintended consequences, and public health disciplines
such as epidemiology, health professions, social work, policy, and
more. With other students, you will describe prevention, treatment,
and population-level approaches to improving health, and will
develop strategies for reducing the impact of these issues during
the pandemic. This workshop is ideal for students interested in
public health, social work, social sciences, community development,
public policy, criminal justice, health professions, and more.
CREATIVE WRITING
Have you written a poem or a story, or imagined yourself as an
author? In this course, you can explore your potential as a creative
writer. It will be run as a college-level creative writing workshop,
where you will read works by contemporary writers, write your own,
and read and discuss your classmates’ writing.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM
Learn about the criminal justice system and its component parts,
while investigating current issues like excessive force, bail
reform, mass incarceration, and the death penalty. This workshop
will provide you with tools to engage in informed debate about
contemporary criminal justice issues and to work toward meaningful
systemic reform.
EVENT AND ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT
Work with other students to simulate planning a major event, like a
conference or convention. You will learn about the major operational
considerations, like accommodations, food and beverage, tourism
destination marketing, technical services, front office, facility
marketing and sales, risk management, and project management.
By the end of the workshop, you will have a strong understanding
of the meetings, conference and convention industry, one of the
fastest growing sectors in the tourism and hospitality industry.
Advances in scientists’ understanding of the human genome are
making it possible to identify why certain diseases occur, and how to
better prevent or treat them. In this interdisciplinary workshop that
learn how new technologies that harness the power of our genes to
fight disease are being developed and used in the medical field.
HISTORY OF ART IN ROME
Travel (virtually) to Rome, Italy to learn about Roman art from the
founding of the ancient city to the year 1700. With an instructor
teaching live from Rome, you’ll explore Rome’s position as both
capital of the ancient empire and of the western Latin Church, which
has earned her the well-recognized title of Eternal City. You will
discuss how the “idea” of Rome had a bearing upon the formation of
its art and architecture within the chronological context.
INSIDE CRIMINAL LAW
Learn about the basics of criminal law, including the differences
between civil and criminal law, how the court system operates, and
how trials work. Engage with Philadelphia prosecutors and defense
PUBLIC HEALTH RESEARCH
Explore various health issues including substance use, access to
care, nutrition, and more through the lens of public health research,
evidence-based practice, and evaluation. Through partnerships with
RACE AT THE BORDERS OF EUROPE
Confront the pressing questions of race and migration in modern
society, with a particular focus on Italy, with this workshop offered
live from Temple’s Rome campus. From classic Greeks and Romans,
who saw themselves under siege by the “barbarian hordes,” to
contemporary America and its war on “extremism,” Western
societies have repeatedly represented groups of people as threats to
civilization. What is behind this impulse to divide the world into “us”
and “them”? How is it bound up with our understanding of race and
racial difference? And what happens when the “barbarian hordes”
talk back?
RISK MANAGEMENT AND ACTUARIAL ANALYTICS FOR THE
MODERN WORLD
Risks are ever-present and growing in the world, yet where there
exists risk, there exists business opportunity. Learn about the
purpose of insurance and how risks such as natural catastrophe,
cybersecurity, financial market, and healthcare are being managed. In
addition, explore the mathematical analysis of risk using probability,
statistics, time value of money, and financial market tools.
original songs, each student will receive feedback from peers and
the instructor to improve their songwriting skills. You will also learn
