Culture and tradition.
Valais is the cradle of a fascinating cultural heritage;
castles, fortifications, museums and many other ancient
buildings bear witness to a rich history. This is also a
land of living traditions, such as those surrounding
cattle of the local Hérens breed. The cows naturally
lock horns to establish a hierarchy within the herd,
and compete in organised cow fights with the victor
crowned “queen”. Visitors can also see these typical
cattle during the ascent to the mountain pastures in
spring and the descent in autumn. The St Bernard
Museum and Dogs offer a chance to learn all about
this iconic breed from Valais and to see dogs and puppies
close-up in the kennel. In the side valleys, visitors
may well hear the sound of an alphorn, echo of a time
when these instruments served as a means of communication.
A busy calendar of music festivals, exhibitions
and theatre performances reflects the canton’s
openness to the world and its joie de vivre.
Wine tourism.
With 5,000 ha/12,355 ac of vineyards, Valais is
Switzerland’s leading winegrowing region, accounting
for one third of Swiss production. The terraced vineyards
extend from Martigny to Salgesch in Upper Valais
and often feature dry-stone walls, built using expertise
passed down for generations: skills listed by UNESCO
as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Valais is also home to some of Europe’s highest
vineyards, located at an altitude of 1,100 m/3,609 ft
at Visperterminen. The favourable climate – dry and
sunny – and the diversity of soils enable nearly 60 different
grape varieties to flourish. Alongside robust red
wines, produced with indigenous grape varieties, winemakers
also favour Pinot Noirs, the main grape variety
in the well-known Dôle blend. The range of white
wines extends from light and delicate Chasselas (or
Fendant) to specialities including late-harvest wines
that are full-bodied and complex.
Following your overnight stay, head up to Kreuzboden to climb the highest
Via Ferrata in the Western Alps to the summit of the Jegihorn. Thrills
guaranteed as you cross the Via Ferrata bridge! Duration: around 6 hours.
