The Rhone-Route connects – between Oberwald and 

Geneva – completely different types of landscapes: 

In Goms, the landscape is alpine and the route consists 

for the most part of downhill rides. In Brig, the

it perfect for casual cyclists as well.

• From Chamoson railway station, the wine trail «From the grape to the 

summit» leads through the vineyards towards St-Pierre-de-Clages 

with its XI century church, up to Chamoson, then through the 

terraced vineyards to Grugnay, where after 1.5 hours you will reach 

the restaurant «La Préfecture». 

• From 12pm, lunch at the restaurant «La Préfecture» with view over 

the Rhone valley. 

• The circular walk along the wine trail takes you down to Chamoson in 

30 minutes to a wine cellar. 

• Wine tasting with commentary and visit to the wine cellar.

Traditions – make cheese & butter like in the olden days. 

Discover the traditions and culture of cheese-making and alpine farming and watch 

first-hand how alpine cheese and butter is made using age-old, methods at the Alpine 

Museum. Spend an unforgettable day immersed in the customs of yesteryear including

who will assist with hiring your ski material, teach the basics of skiing and accompany 

you back to the sports shop.

St-Léonard’s underground lake. 

St-Léonard’s subterranean lake is nestled in the Rhone Valley in the heart of the Swiss 

Alps. Around 300 metres long, this is the largest natural underground lake in Europe 

which can be explored by boat. You’ll meet your guide at a depth of 30 metres under 

the vineyards and join him or her aboard a large rowing boat to start your journey. 

Enjoy the peace of this amazing place during a 30 min boat trip on the crystal-clear 

water, while your guide explains all sorts of fascinating details about the origin and the

Zooom the Matterhorn: The multimedia experience world 

For more than 120 years the Gornergrat Bahn has been 

making the ascent to the panoramic mountain a truly 

unique and wonderful experience. From Zermatt, the 

popular holiday resort in the Valais, Europe’s highest 

open-air cogwheel railway departs daily every 24 (48 

in off-season) minutes*, climbing to the Gornergrat 

9,339 m away. The train crosses impressive bridges, 

galleries and tunnels, idyllic forests and alpine meadows, 

past rocky gorges ad tarns, accompanied by the 

majestic mountains, first n foremost by the Matterhorn.

Sledging fun (Rotenboden to Riffelberg). 

Have loads of fun enjoying a different kind of winter activity on the Rotenboden – Riffelberg, 

the highest toboggan run in Switzerland. The 1.6km /0.9 mile ride from Rotenboden 

(2,815 m/9,235 ft a.s.l.) takes about 10 min. Trains from Riffelberg up to Rotenboden 

depart every 10 min. Toboggans are available for hire at the Rotenboden station.

Who hasn’t seen the famous, black-nosed sheep from Zermatt? Their spiralled horns, 

black faces and ears and white woolly coat – which is special in itself. From July to September 

these sheep graze on the Gornergrat. They wear collars that can be tracked with 

GPS and every visitor will be able to locate them. Guided walks available upon request.

1906. After travelling up the steep rack-and-pinion 

track between Vernayaz and Salvan, with its 20% 

gradient, you will discover the spectacular Trient

the history of the dogs. 

The Great St. Bernard Hospice 

(2,469 m/8,100 ft) was founded in 

the 11 th century as a refuge for travellers 

and pilgrims. The priests at 

the hospice kept large mountain 

dogs from the mid-17th century 

onwards to guard and protect those 

staying at the hospice. The presence 

of mountain dogs at the Great 

St. Bernard Hospice is recorded in 

iconographic documents dating back 

to 1695 and in a hospice memo from 

1707. The dogs were soon used to 

accompany travellers and were 

employed as search and rescue dogs 

for those who had lost their way in 

the snow and fog on the pass. 

St. Bernard dogs (then called “Barry 

dogs”) have saved the lives of a 

great number of people throughout 

the years. Their reputation grew 

throughout Europe in the 19 th century 

thanks to chronicles published 

in many languages and reports 

passed on by word of mouth by soldiers 

who had crossed the pass with 

Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800. 

At an international dog conference 

on June 2nd, 1887, the Saint Bernard 

was officially recognized as a 

Swiss dog breed and compulsory 

standards were set for the breed. 

The Saint Bernard has been 

regarded as Switzerland’s national 

dog ever since.
