Welcome to the Valais Matterhorn Region.
The Valais Matterhorn Region is the ideal destination
for enjoying the good things in life, testing and surpassing
one’s limits, spending precious family time
together or just bringing peace to body and soul thanks
to a pure alpine environment and a magnificent mountain
landscape.
Access within Switzerland.
Switzerland possesses the densest public transport network in the world.
Some 29,000 kilometres of rail, road and waterway cover the country
like a finely woven network. Comfortable and punctual connections promise
a hassle-free onward journey – from any airport or border station or
from neighbouring countries. Connections are always assured: even as
high up as 3,800 metres a.s.l., public transport services are coordinated
to perfection. The Swiss Travel System offers travellers from abroad the
possibility to discover excursion destinations, mountains, lakes and more
than 500 museums with one single ticket: the Swiss Travel Pass. Holders
of this ticket can explore Switzerland on 3, 4, 8 or 15 days.

The Gornergrat Bahn.
If you want to discover the dazzling beauty of the Alps,
you’ll soon realize that the trip to Gornergrat is an
essential excursion. Its sunny viewing platform, accessible
all year, makes the Gornergrat ridge a top destination
– and not just because of its altitude. Surrounded
by 29 peaks rising above 4,000m and by Switzerland’s
greatest mountain, the Matterhorn, and the second
largest glacier in the Alps, it offers a spectacular mountain
panorama second to none. And the “Matterhorn
Railway” renders it so close you can almost touch it.

been making the ascent to the panoramic mountain a
truly unique and wonderful experience. From Zermatt,
one of the most popular holiday resorts in the Valais,
Europe’s highest open-air cogwheel railway departs
daily every 24 minutes, climbing to the Gornergrat
9,339 m away. The train crosses impressive bridges, galleries
and tunnels, idyllic forests and alpine meadows,
past rocky gorges and tarns, accompanied by majestic
mountains, over which the Matterhorn reigns supreme.

Tell me more about
the history of the dogs.
The Great St. Bernard Hospice
(2,469 m/8,100 ft) was founded in
the 11 th century as a refuge for travellers
and pilgrims. The priests at
the hospice kept large mountain
dogs from the mid-17 th century
onwards to guard and protect those
staying at the hospice. The presence
of mountain dogs at the Great
St. Bernard Hospice is recorded in
iconographic documents dating back
to 1695 and in a hospice memo from
1707. The dogs were soon used to
accompany travellers and were
employed as search and rescue dogs
for those who had lost their way in
the snow and fog on the pass.
St. Bernard dogs (then called “Barry
dogs”) have saved the lives of a
great number of people throughout
the years. Their reputation grew
throughout Europe in the 19 th century
thanks to chronicles published
in many languages and reports
passed on by word of mouth by soldiers
who had crossed the pass with
Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800.
At an international dog conference
on June 2 nd , 1887, the Saint Bernard
was officially recognized as a
Swiss dog breed and compulsory
standards were set for the breed.
The Saint Bernard has been
regarded as Switzerland’s national
dog ever since.
