Interior Health The joy of ice-fishing Despite a warm start to winter, many Interior lakes now have enough ice to be safe for ice-fishing. Plenty of anglers have been getting out there to enjoy this unique and family-friendly activity. What gear do you need to get started? At the minimum, an ice-fishing rod or short spinning rod; tackle; an ice auger for creating a hole in the ice; and warm clothes. Nice-to-have items include a chair; ice shelter fishing tent; and sled for transporting gear across the ice. Wondering where to go ice-fishing? Many lakes are accessible during winter where you can catch trout, char, kokanee, and other species. ❤❤ Check the gofishbc.com website’s Where-to-Fish map for ideas on stocked lakes near you. Thousands of unstocked lakes in the province have great fishing, too – use the resources in this post to learn what species are present in these lakes. To get an idea whether a lake has enough ice cover to fish safely, consider its elevation, and consistency of below-freezing temperatures in the past few weeks. Online forums and local fishing clubs can be excellent sources of information on local conditions. Research your route in advance, but remember that some roads will not be plowed. Check the Freshwater Fishing Regulations for any closures or restrictions on any water body you intend to visit. Stay safe. Tell someone where you are going. Make sure that the ice is at least 10 centimetres (four inches) thick before venturing out. Kaslo Chamber You’ve probably heard this story before. A man and his son were walking along a beach. Thousands of starfish had washed up on the shore and were now lying in the sun, drying and dying. The young boy started throwing starfish back into the ocean. The man said to the boy, “Son, why are you even bothering? You can’t possibly make a difference… there are just too many!” Without pausing the boy picked up another starfish, threw it back into the ocean, and said, “No, but I bet it’ll make a difference to this one!” 2020 – a year like no other! We’ve never seen the world like this. And there’s so much that doesn’t make sense. I’ve heard it said (and maybe even had moments myself) “It’s just too much; there’s nothing we can do.” Perhaps we can’t change the world, but can we make a difference ‘to this one’? Perhaps, even in the midst of these trying times, we can find the good, we can make the good and together we can do it better. The Light Up Parade we just experienced is a great example. At a time when people were feeling the heaviness of all the restrictions and orders, our community stepped up to the plate and lit up our great Village of Kaslo, bringing joy and light to all! And we did it all while following the Public Health Order guidelines. If you’re thinking, “I didn’t do anything… I just came out to watch,” let me say: those who were driving in the parade were cheered and lifted to see you standing in your front yards or looking out your windows. You absolutely played a part! There are so many great organizations in our area, with so many opportunities to make a difference. I would encourage you to join any one of them to see how you can help. But since I represent the Kaslo and Area Chamber of Commerce, let me put in that ‘shameless plug’ for what the Chamber is doing and how you can be a part of it. Perhaps you aren’t aware that the Chamber puts on events such as Kaslo May Days and Light Up, and runs promotions supporting our business community such as the Great Gift Giveaway, Caught in the Act and Choose Local campaigns. Your membership fees support those great initiatives. Here at our Chamber of Commerce we’re excited to roll up our sleeves and get to work, eager to make a difference in the lives of the residents and the businesses throughout our area. But we can’t do it alone. Nor do we want to do it alone. Because we know that we are better together!
