Academic Leadership Development
Ann Marie Stock, Vice Provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs, initiated the Academic Leadership Development workshop to
explore possibilities for creating a program to support department chairs and program directors. Established as a signature project
for the studio, pilot programming began in Spring 2020. The Academic Leadership Workshops showcased a need for mid-level
leaders to receive more training and support. The network developed within the programming provided connections for participants
across the university and highlighted areas of shared interest. The identification of strategies to become more effective leaders was
noted, and having a space to discuss challenges with other midlevel leaders proved useful.
Several participants remain in contact with each other since the workshop and continue to share strategies for the leadership of their
units. The feedback from the pilot programming contributes to the strategic planning for future programming to support academic
leadership development at William & Mary. A focus on midlevel leaders contributes to advancement potential and succession
planning, and advances the day-to-day work of these leaders on campus. Since the completion of the pilot program, an interest
within W&M Arts & Sciences has been expressed to expand the current orientation events for
new chairs and directors to include programming that overlaps with future iterations of the
Academic Leadership Workshop.
Consultations
The backbone of work done at the studio is faculty and co-educator
consultations. STLI learning consultants meet with instructors across the
university to provide guidance, collaborate on solutions, and empower
instructors to bring new ideas into their courses. While offering a variety of
pathways for faculty members and co-educators seeking help with teaching and
learning through consultations, learning consultants also reach out directly to all
instructors at the beginning of every semester with information on on-demand
resources and information for requesting a consultation. STLI consultations and
online resources are two of the most effective tools in supporting innovation in
teaching and learning at William & Mary. The success of transitioning key ideas
from consultations into self-serve opportunities for instructors has allowed the
STLI team to effectively support W&M instructors as they made the difficult
transition to online, remote, and hybrid teaching modes.
