An escape in the Canadian woods
Identity Materialized 2019 – Made in Canada Project 2
Design by Alexander Burton, Sade Huh
OUR STORY
Huddled around the campfire, a father tells his
kids stories of camping in the Canadian woods;
his memories of collecting firewood, roasting
marshmallows and listening to the wind in the
branches high overhead.
His most vivid memory was gazing up at the
shining night sky through a clearing in pines.
This experience reached beyond superficial
pleasure, it was a feeling of calm serenity as he
lay there in awe of nature.
These experiences in the woods became closely
connected to how he identified as a Canadian.
He shared his memories with his kids to pass
on this deep appreciation Canada’s vast
wilderness.

OUR PRODUCT
Evoking the atmosphere of a forest clearing, looking up at the sky through
an opening in the trees, the glow of a campfire, and the luminous night
against the darkness of the trees. A strongly Canadian experience that
influences our Identity.
To recreate the feeling of calm and serenity found when camping in the
wood and translating it to the urban setting where city dwellers search for
peace and balance in their homes and their lives.

THE ATMOSPHERE
IDEATION
Ideation
• Worked through stages of design development, exploring different
directions through drawing
• We explored paper, wood and metal concepts in tabletop, standing and
hanging versions. We explored different forms, folds, cuts and joints.
• To the right, drawings related to our final concept.
Lighting
• We In tandem with sketching and prototyping we looked at lighting
• We started with a LED bulb. The effect was too diffused, it didn’t
produce enough of a projection. As we were aiming to build a specific
atmosphere we abandoned the bulb
• Next we attempted a strip of exposed LEDs. These created a clearer
projection but the multiple diodes created an undesired fractured light
• We then tried an LED spot light which had a strong central projection
but the effect was too extreme
• We settled on a single diode for its dim mood and clear projection
• It created the atmosphere of our story and concept
SKETCHING
DEVELOPMENT
Process
• While we explored atmosphere and narrowed our concept, we also
explored form with sketch prototypes
• We generated a laser cut pattern from an image of light between trees
• We tested many ways implement the form and simplify the base
Insights
• A interior layer creates a warm look and increased dimensionality
• Wire between layers is added for the ability it adds to shape top
• We are embracing paper despite it’s delicacy and view its impermanence
as a positive in a world where so many products are thrown away
• The hidden wooden base speaks to Canadian materiality, creates
structure for the shade and acts as a mask for the LED
TARGET USER
