The Old Finsbury Town Hall in
Clerkenwell hosted this year’s
most ambitious offering to
date and what a fabulous
place it was, a two-fl oored
rabbit warren of fabulous
rooms all leading off the
stunning Great Hall. It was
clear that the promoters had
put a lot of effort into the
event and each room was
styled differently, with a casino
room and eccentric nostalgia
piano lounge thrown in for
good measure.
Gorgeous girls and boys –
we believe over 900 in all –
poured in through doors, all
dressed up in their fi nest
corsets, feathers, lace outfi ts,
top hats and tails, a true visual
spectacle at this modern day
Moulin Rouge.
The Great Hall was
jumping all night to the
dirtylicious sounds of DJs
Nicole Moudaber and Philly
and included a show at
midnight – introduced by Mel,
Master of Ceremonies, in a
fetching white top hat and tails
– Boogaloo Stu and his troupe
of 50s dancers, Sparklemotion,
primed the crowd, who were
then treated to a dominating
vocal performance from the
sultry Paloma Faith. All this
was followed by the Ophelia
Fancy fashion show with
stunning models in sexy
lingerie chaperoned by boys in
skinny black suits and masks,.
The crowd were whipped
into a frenzy as they strutted
their stuff down the catwalk,
to the sound of cheers and
countless cameras clicking..
Band of the moment,
Voodoo Hussy, belted out a
great set with their lead singer
clambering all over the stage,
followed by eclectic electronica
from the brilliant Dani Siciliano
and Hannah Holland.
The Cabaret Court, hosted
by Chris Holliday from BBC
Manchester, bubbled along
merrily with DJs Mordecai and
Jon Sizzle, plus a line up of
burlesque delight.: Dusty
Limits, Jonny Woo, Holestar –
proving fanny can do tranny –
Chrys Columbine. The hugely
talented 10-piece band
Barefoot gave a softer set
before rising star of the night
Miss Bijou Noir wowed the
crowd as she exploded from
a huge present box
resplendent in custom made
fans and glitter cannon.
Not to be outdone, the
WiSH room absolutely
heaved all night long with DJ
Kath Harding and Kate Nunn
totally rocking the place,
alongside Radio One’s
Mistress De Funk sending
temperatures soaring…
… literally!
Finally at 4am, after a last
few shouts of ‘more’ from a
crowd eager for just one
more dance, the crowds
began to drift home, fl ashing
their stockings, laughing with
their friends, rolling down the
street into the East London
night. It seems The Dirty Red
Ball did create a little magic in
us all that night and we can’t
wait for the next one. It’s
going to be Saturday 11
March 2009 we believe…
