Well, the first bit was easy, I simply
popped down to Mayfair for an informal
chat with Kate Stickland at Malary and
Browne. Instead of trawling through
profiles of women for girlfriend potential,
Malary and Browne take a
different approach – no pictures. Kate
explained: “You can look at photos on
any website, we like to take a more
personal approach.”
We had an informal chat so Kate
could find out all about me and exactly
what I’m looking for in a woman. Femme/
butch, age, hobbies, even star sign if it is
something that might be important. Kate
explained that women come here, not
looking for a one-night stand, but to find a
long-term partner, so once she knows
what I’m like and what I’m looking for she
can go through her books and find me a
suitable date.
Pre-date
I am quite excited but a little nervous
now. Kate spoke to Jen* about me, then
I’ve had a chat on the phone to Jen and
surprisingly enough, she sounds quite
nice! She is a year older than me, works in
IT in the city, says she is a fem lady looking

The meeting
We opted for a lunch date at Balans in
Old Compton Street. I felt a lunch date
was a sensible way to go. If we don’t get
on, there is the safe way out of having to
return to work and if we do… well, to
cut the story short, I was a bit late back
to work!
The scariest part was waiting to meet
her. What if we had one of those
awkward silences at the table? I arrived
early and am not very good at waiting, so
I went to beautify myself and luckily, she
had arrived by the time I surfaced. First
impressions – yes! She is gorgeous! And I
think she talks nearly as much as me so
definitely no awkward silences. We found
out that we both love horse riding and
both commute into London as we own
flats out of town and like the best of both
worlds, so no hiring a u-haul on the third
date then!
What happened next?
Are we going to see each other again?
Yes! We have arranged to go to a party
together in London next week. Only
thing was, I’m a little shy and it was
broad daylight when we left each other,
so we parted with just a peck on
the cheek.
Does she fancy me? Or does she just
want to meet as friends? Here’s where
the dating agency came in handy. Kate
was straight on the phone to each of us
asking how it went. 20 minutes later, I had
a call back to say “yes” the feeling was
mutual. Grinning from ear to ear, I thought
“not bad for a days work!”
