The above quote is widely attributed to the ancient philosopher Socrates, but
in reality, those are the words of world-class gymnast Dan Millman who wrote
them in 2006. Since then, Millman has become a successful coach, self-help
author, and lecturer.
No matter the source, these words may never ring truer than they do at the
launch of 2021. This is a time to reassess and adjust.
Housetrends, and all of the clients who support us, definitely went through
changes in the past year. While our first impulse was to try to get back to the
way things were, after some consideration we decided this was actually the
right time to look optimistically forward. After a definite lull, builders, remodelers,
and designers got back to their booming businesses as homeowners made
plans to add function and comfort to their nests.
We’ve decided to celebrate the boom in home renovation and this special
Idea Book issue of Housetrends reflects that. In a subtle variation from our
typical content, this publication focuses on how the home and garden industry
is changing….what’s trending, what’s new, what there is to look forward to.
Experts have shared with us what they see happening in kitchens and baths
over the next three years. Color professionals have selected their hot hues for
2021. And builders and kitchen planners are telling us that working pantries
are definitely worth considering.
We’ll be back with a more traditional version of
Housetrends in March, but in the meantime, we
hope you enjoy this special edition.
The National
Kitchen & Bath
Association reveals
top trends to
impact kitchen and
bathroom design
decisions over the
next three years
Recently, The National Kitchen &
Bath Association released their annual
Design Trends study. The report
takes a deep dive into all aspects of
both kitchen and primary bathroom
design, with the goal of highlighting
styles, features, materials and innovations
expected to be most popular
over the next few years. The survey
included over 700 respondents from
across North America. More than
half the participants were designers
and the remainder were architects,
remodelers, showroom professionals
and manufacturers.
Here are some highlights from
their research:
It’s no big surprise that the COVID-
19 pandemic will have a substantial
lasting impact on kitchen and
bath design. As homeowners spend
more time at home, kitchens and
primary bathrooms are getting larger,
the volume of outdoor living projects
is increasing significantly and there
is a need for easy-to-clean surfaces,
flexible living spaces and seamless
technology integration for added convenience
and peace of mind. ➻
Aesthetically, design preferences in both the kitchen and bath will continue
to be more contemporary and transitional in style, with the added influence
of a new leading trend of “natural/organic.” This combination feels more
European in style and scale, with clean lines, minimal detailing, the warmth
and texture of natural finishes, and larger windows to bring the feeling of
the outdoors inside.
Traditional design, which consistently had been one of the top three
kitchen and bath styles for more than a decade, is now anticipated to be
one of the least popular. “We expect designs for both the kitchen and
bath to continue trending toward a more modern, organic feel that is both
streamlined and adaptable,” said Bill Darcy, NKBA CEO.
“The kitchen has long been the heart of the home. But especially during
the pandemic, it has emerged as the most prominent, multitasking room as
well,” Darcy says. “We see this continuing with more open-space concepts,
an extension into multi-season outdoor living spaces, larger kitchen island
hubs and increased functionality and storage to allow homeowners to cook,
eat, work, home-school and play, all in the same vicinity.” ➻
Additional emerging trends for
the kitchen include:
APPLIANCES
Gas and induction cooking methods
are nearly equal in popularity, with
induction expected to replace
traditional glass electric cooktops.
Ventilation hoods will become the
new decorative focal point in the
kitchen.
FAUCETS
Finishes are matte and brushed in
stainless steel or black. Functions
include motion-controlled, handsfree
or touch/tap. ➻

1 The FlexInduction Cooktop by Bosch
allows the placing of cookware anywhere on
its flexible cooking zone. 2 This 66-inch Pro
Island Hood by Wolf makes a statement for
serious cooks. 3 A simple wave of a hand—
or an object such as a pan—turns Kohler’s
Simplice Response kitchen faucet on or off.
4 Kohler’s Graze Touchless pull-down kitchen
sink faucet in matte black features a threefunction
2
TECHNOLOGY
Space is dedicated for device charging and viewing. It’s important to have seamless video
communication. Also, incase of an outage in your area, plan for an emergency power
backup.
SURFACES
Quartz, particularly in lighter colors, will continue to be the driving material for
countertops. Backsplashes go large scale, featuring a solid slab or long subway tile.
Complementary colors and materials mix on perimeter countertops and islands. ➻
.
1 The Family Hub by Samsung comes preloaded with dozens of features. The screen can be
customized to run all aspects of life directly from the fridge. 2 The countertops and backsplash in
this kitchen are in Cambria's Queensbury quartz. The pattern is inspired by abstract shapes that
emerge from London's fog.
CONNECTING
IN THE
KITCHEN
There is increasing value
on a more hidden, but quite
powerful feature in the
kitchen—connectivity which
means your smart apps talk to
your appliances. Wi-fi enabled
appliances allow everyday tasks
to be streamlined and keep
errors to a minimum.
“For example, artificial
intelligence is used to inventory
the contents of a refrigerator.
Connected food apps then
suggest recipes for dinners
based on those contents,”
says Ken Rieman with Custom
Distributors. “A range can be
connected with a hood to signal
the start of the exhaust fan.
A refrigerator can serve as a
command center with a touch
screen featuring Wi-Fi, voice
activation, cameras and more.”
Does “connectivity” mean
there’s more to break? “It’s
really the opposite,” says Darin
Rieman, Ken’s brother and
partner at Custom Distributors.
“Smart technology monitors the
performance of the appliance
and suggests the most efficient
settings. The most recent
technology will be downloaded
to the appliance to keep it at
peak performance.”
1 This zero entry shower features linear drains and a Celesta frameless
glass shower screen from Basco.
Additional emerging trends for the bathroom include:
SHOWER AND TUB
In demand are roomier freestanding showers to accommodate two
people with zero-clearance entry, integrated seating and grab bars.
Surrounds are larger-format with fewer grout lines. Stylish linear
drains work by allowing the water to flow into a trough beneath
the shower floor.
FAUCETS
Similar to the kitchen, bathroom faucets are going toward voice-activated
or hands-free, in black or nickel, matte or brushed finishes. ➻
and invites in the warmth and
Floating vanities come to the
forefront with integrated electrical
TECHNOLOGY
to take the bath high-tech.
Wonderful
to have
Wines
on hand
A selection of six premium wines that
are perfect for intimate dinners or
long-awaited gatherings
As the pages turn on our calendars, many of us are beginning to
anticipate a shift from zoom happy hours to face-to-face gatherings
that we’ve missed so dearly. With that in mind, there has
never been a better time to consider taking your wine selection up
a notch. Nicholas Gantenberg, wine director of The Wine Cellar at
The Spicy Olive, suggests these wines that cover all the bases—red,
white and bubbly. Prices range from $50 for most of the selections,
to over $100 for the Cabernet. All are perfect to have on hand for
celebrating the days to come.
Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc
Round, lush and vibrantly balanced
across the palate. Richness and weight
counterbalance bright acidity supported
by flavors of tangerine, lemon zest,
candied orange peel and sweet pink
grapefruit.
Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay
Elegant tastes of apple and pear
characters are balanced by fresh acidity,
and the finish is clean. This is a versatile
pairing wine with fresh salads, grilled
scallops, and most cheeses.
Mount Peak Gravity
A quality red blend that adjusts to
many tastes. It is filled with intense fruit
characteristics that create a full-bodied,
luscious mouthfeel. It’s well suited for
grilled meats and stews.
Belle Glos Pinot Noir: Clark &
Telephone, Dairyman or Las Alturas
Deep garnet or ruby reds, from three
different regions pinot noirs offer
medleys of cherries, plums and black
fruits in a medium bodied wine. Pair
with pork, poultry, or creamy dishes.
Veuve Clicquot Champagne
Golden yellow with creamy, tiny bubbles
and fruity vanilla aromas. Fantastic
champagne for cheeses, with a salmon
dinner or any special beginning.
Daou “Soul of a Lion” Cabernet
Sauvignon
Deep, complex bouquet that presents
notes of cassis, black currant, licorice,
incense, ripe plum and vanilla. A perfect
complement to red meats. This wine is a
real special treat.
your satisfaction
BEFORE
The homeowners, while empty nesters, still needed a much more open floorplan for entertaining. The
low soffits and dividing wall between the kitchen and eating space, as well as the load wall between the
kitchen and family room, made the kitchen space very cramped. In the new design, the soffits as well as the
load wall were removed. We also centered the opening into the dining room to allow for more symmetry
and the ability to add a pantry next to the refrigerator. Moving the sink and dishwasher into the island
gave the much needed space for a new micro drawer, gas range and stainless steel hood. They now have a
beautifully open floor plan large enough to accommodate their family and friends.
We’re all crazy for a
Charcuterie
While traditionally a charcuterie is a collection of cold, cooked meats, that
word—and the board it sits on—recently have exploded into a visual and
gastronomical feast.
When it comes to entertaining—small groups or large—it’s hard to beat the
fun and flexibility of these platters. Portions can easily be scaled, and ingredients
selected can be as affordable or high-end as you see fit. Here are a few guidelines
for getting started. ➻
40 housetrends.com

Cheeses: Choose 4+
Selecting a soft cheese, a semi-soft cheese, a firm cheese,
and a blue cheese will provide for a balanced combination.
For example: a brie for the soft, a Havarti or mozzarella for
the semi-soft, and a cheddar for the firm selection. If you
don’t care for “stinky” cheeses, consider one with added
wine, herbs or fruit. Have fun with the cheeses. These
selections seem to generate the most buzz among guests.
Meats: Choose 2+
Consider a reliable classic such as ham or turkey, then add
a spicier selection or two—possibly pepperoni, salami,
prosciutto, cured sausage, chorizo, or even bacon. While
some of these meats can be a bit pricey per pound, you
really don’t need a large amount of each. Guests will be
enjoying tasting portions.
Bread and crackers: 2+
A hearty bread, such as a baguette, ciabatta, or nutty whole
grain loaf, sliced into small sections is great for creating
tasty masterpieces using the meats and cheeses along with
a smear of jam, chutney or mustard. A few clusters of
gourmet crackers work well for staging those smaller bites.
Fruits: 3+
Fruits are great for adding splashes of color to your board.
Clusters of red or green grapes and berries add a visual
punch. Apple slices might work well with your Cheddar
cheese. Pears accompany your brie. Also consider dried
fruits in the form of figs, cranberries or dried apricots.
Spreads: 2+
You should include at least one sweet and one savory
spread. In general, a spicy whole grain mustard is always a
good pick to satisfy the savory side of things, but a hummus
or tapenade will work as well. The sky is the limit on the
sweet side— anything from a local honey to chutney or jam.
Final touches
Small, but mighty details to add include pickles, veggies, and
olives. Add in a variety of nuts—walnuts, cashews, almonds,
pistachios, and pecans—there’s not a bad choice in the
bunch. A sprig of rosemary, or another fresh herb add a
perfect finishing touch.
Assembly
Find the right board to build your platters. Large cutting
boards, marble slabs, slate boards or ceramic platters are
great options. Start with one of your larger items as a focal
point, place the items in order of biggest to smallest. Meats
can be sliced, folded or rolled up in individual tasting sizes.
Soft cheeses should be served with a spreader or butter
knife. Hard cheeses can sliced, cubed, or served with a
knife. The smaller items, such as bread slices, crackers and
nuts should be in a couple different areas so that they are
easily within reach. Mustards and jams can be placed in small
ramekins scattered around the board with spreaders nearby.
While assembly may seem intimidating, you really can’t mess
it up. If you’d prefer to have a visual staring point, find a
version online to use as inspiration. Enjoy!
It should come as no surprise,
heading out of 2020
and into a new and hopeful
year, that experts in the
paint and color industry have
chosen colors for 2021 that
are described with words
and phrases including: inviting,
tranquil, wellness,
natural harmony, reflect,
reset, and calming. Two soft
watery blues suggest wellness
with their spa-like style.
An understated gray-brown
has an anchoring quality that
conveys a sense of comfort
and sanctuary in bedrooms,
living rooms and dens, or
calm concentration in home
offices–which are a definite
space getting plenty of attention
these days. See if you
in your own home with one
of these picks.
Bold and understated at the same time, Urbane Bronze from
Sherwin-Williams is a warm, grounding shade of gray-brown
intended to reflect our current need for serenity and stability.
“The home is now the ultimate retreat from the world,
and color is an easy and effective way to create a personal
haven,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at
Sherwin-Williams. Gray undertones balance the earthy
brown to create a dark, deeply comforting color reminiscent
of burnished metal or timeworn stone. ➻
Benjamin Moore’s Aegean Teal marries the tranquil
Hannah Yeo, color marketing and development
blue-green that creates natural harmony and invites
calming qualities make it an excellent choice for bedrooms
For its first ever color of the year, Glidden has chosen an
accent color: Aqua Fiesta. The Glidden team describes
it as a “vibrant aquamarine that works best in small
They suggest pairing this tropical turquoise with a cool
bedrooms or living areas, the addition of cream-colored
fabrics and neutral accessories helps soften the paint’s
boldness.
Working Pantry:
an out-of-sight
solution
54 housetrends.com

If you're a neat,
clean-as-you-go
cook, you may not
need a dedicated
space for meal prep
and staging, but for
the rest of us, a
working pantry could
just be the perfect
solution for keeping
the mess at bay.
No longer tucked away from the
action, cooks and their kitchens are
now front and center in living and
entertainment spaces.
No walls separate them from family
members and guests as they enjoy
their meals in a less formal dining
area. That’s a big upside for the
homeowner. The downside is that the
kitchen—and any mess one might
make—is visible to everyone at the
table.
Ranging from a walk-in room with
abundant shelving to a decked out
“messy kitchen” or prep space which
includes additional appliances, these
rooms provide the amenities to move
unsightly kitchen tasks out of eyesight.
Countertops and electrical outlets
provide the working space to
accommodate small appliances, such
as mixers, toasters, blenders and coffee
makers. ➻
This expansive “kitchen annex” features a
sink, an under-counter refrigerator, an ice
maker and an abundance of open shelving
which is accessible via a custom-built
ladder. J&K Custom Homes photo by Greg
“Once you get your
food prep and storage
areas in order,” says
Erica Winchester
from Closets by
Design, “Cooking and
cleaning will never
be the same.”
Amped up pantries might include a
second refrigerator, oven, microwave or
dishwasher. While entertaining, homeowners
can clear the table and place the
dishes in the pantry and move on to
dessert with a clean backdrop. (If they’ve
played their cards right, they could have
one of their teenagers load the dishwasher
out of sight while guests enjoy
an after-dinner drink.) These pantries
also work beautifully as a staging area or
catering kitchen for parties.
While it may sound like a splurge,
incorporating a working pantry when
building a new home or remodeling a
kitchen might actually allow homeowners
to cut a few corners. Since these areas
are meant to be out of sight, owners can
opt for more affordable options such as
metal shelving and laminate countertops.
And when small appliances and entertaining
supplies—such as serving platters,
barware and the “good” china—are
housed in the pantry, the kitchen may
not need as much cabinetry and countertop
space, says Michelle Moran, partner
at J&K Custom Homes. ➻
Even if these rooms don’t include a
lot of bells and whistles, the additional
counter space alone comes
in incredibly handy while hosting
gatherings. If you want to take the
party prep up a notch, this is a great
spot for a including a wine rack or
a wine fridge and possibly an ice
maker which is an increasingly popular
appliance for homeowners who
entertain frequently.
Patterned cement tile seems to be popping up everywhere.
Dating back roughly three centuries, these
unique tiles conjure up thoughts of Moroccan architecture,
Spanish villas and Mexican haciendas. Exhibiting a
handmade look with bold colors and eclectic geometric
shapes, these tiles can completely transform the look of
your home.
Patterned cement tile leaves
a lasting impression
BY LIZZIE KIBLER
The beauty of patterned cement tile is
its ability to complement a wide range of design styles. It
can create a vintage look in a traditional kitchen, but also
establish the perfect focal point in a modern bathroom.
Before you have the first tile installed, it’s important to
learn about what you’re bringing into your home. ➻
The basics
Melanie Stephens, co-founder of Granada Tile, says cement tile has revitalized
an art form that developed in France in the mid-1800s. Some even say the true
origins of this tile date back to Barcelona.
“Unlike handmade ceramic tiles, which are usually hand-painted, glazed and
fired, cement tiles, also known as encaustic tiles, are made by first pouring a
mixture of cement and color pigment into separate compartments in a metal
mold,” Stephens says. “This first color layer is 1/8-inch thick. Next we add concrete
and press the tile under 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch. This is
left to cure, creating a remarkably strong and lustrous cement tile.”
When it comes to the types of tile you are looking for, material makes a huge
difference. According to Stephens, tiles made with low-grade pigment will not
have the same richness and depth of color and those made without marble
powder—an important component added to the cement—will not have the
same natural luster.
“There are a lot of knock-offs out there, such as cement tile with painted
designs that wear off,” says Melanie Ocana, who owns Rustico Tile & Stone
with her husband, Ray Ocana. “With quality cement tile, the top layer is pigmented
cement. You have several millimeters of color and with wear and tear
you aren’t going to lose color.”
Chris Clamp of Cement Tile Shop recommends getting a sample of any
cement tile you might be interested in installing. “We source from factories
worldwide,” Clamp says. “Although the process is the same, each factory’s’ tiles
have unique characteristics.” ➻
Location, location, location
It all depends on the room you’ve chosen to remodel, but if you want patterned tiles and you
aren’t sure what room to put them in, Stephens recommends to start with the kitchen or a
bathroom. Keep in mind that you are not just limited to flooring—kitchen backsplashes and
shower focal points or wall niches are great places to add a touch of character or vintage style.
Clamp adds that mudrooms and laundry rooms are great places to experiment. He’s also seeing
homeowners use the patterned tile on fireplace surrounds and as accent walls.
Ocana says the beauty of cement tile allows people to place a personal stamp on their home.
“We even have customers changing a design. They take out one particular piece and add
another element. It is just like a piece of custom artwork.”
“As cement tile becomes better known and people are seeing its many uses, they are becoming
more adventuresome with its applications,” Stephens says. “We have even had people put
it on their ceilings.”
While cement tile can be used outside, there are a few limitations. “The tiles are not recommended
for outdoor flooring in areas which experience freezing temperatures, since freezing
and thawing of water on the tiles can weaken them,” Stephens says. “They are also not meant
for vehicular traffic.”
Ocana says that if homeowners do install cement tile outside to do so under a covered patio
or lanai. “If it is properly installed and fully waterproofed—from the subfloor to the sealant—
it can be a beautiful addition to an outdoor space,” she says. “We recommend that homeowners
inspect the tile prior to and after winter to ensure it is withstanding the elements.” ➻
Pattern frenzy
If you aren’t certain about what
style to use, Clamp says that classic
styles such as florals, geometrics and
Moroccan tiles are among the most
popular. “We do have very classic patterns
that look great in a mid-century
house or more abstract patterns that
work in a contemporary setting, but
we have seen people do so many different
things because they just love
a particular pattern,” he adds. “We
offer a visualizer on our website that
allows you to ‘try on’ our patterns in
different room scenes or even in your
own space.”
Other than the kitchen, bathrooms
are a great place to add patterned
tiles. In that case, it’s important to
know that both Stephens and Clamp
say their tiles are safe to use in showers
so you don’t have to worry about
slipping. “Our tiles have been tested
by the Tile Council of North America
and more than meet ADA requirements
for slip resistance,” Clamp
says. “We do recommend sealing the
tiles for protection from moisture in
wet areas.”
“We see different trends based on
geography. It’s all about the MeaLu
Collection in the southwest and west
coast,” says Ocana. “But northeast,
in New York for example, people are
interested in geometrics and monochromatic
colors.” ➻
Personality comes to life
The beauty of cement tile is the customization. “There are
beautiful homes that are tiled from head-to-toe that do not
feel overdone,” Stephens says. “That is largely because the
patterns and colors harmonize and draw out the best in
each other. Certainly, if you’re going to use a lot of patterned
tile on floors and walls, you may want simple drapes and
upholstery.”
Clamp suggests checking out Cement Tile Shop’s
Instagram feed to get a sense of how much or how little their
clients use. And just like other natural stone tile, cement
tiles are durable and can last a lifetime. “Well-installed, the
tiles can last over 100 years,” Stephens says. “At their core,
encaustic tiles are hydraulically pressed concrete, a very
durable material.”
