A School Grows in Brooklyn
2019 Annual Report
Mission
& Vision
Our Mission
Cristo Rey Brooklyn is a Catholic high school that
educates young people of limited economic means
to become men and women of faith, purpose, and
service. By offering a rigorous curriculum, a unique
work-study experience and the support of an inclusive
school community, we prepare our students to
succeed in college and beyond with the values essential
to a fulfilling life.
Our Vision
While remaining true to, and fulfilling, the school’s
Mission, to be considered one of the best high
schools in New York as measured by academic
progress and achievement, graduation rates, college
acceptance and accessibility, and college and
post-graduate success and to do so without being
constrained by or resorting to labels, qualifiers or
reduced expectations (e.g. low-income, inner-city,
minority, faith-based).

Dear Friends,
While neither one of us can claim credit for being present at the creation of
Cristo Rey Brooklyn HS, that honor belonging to a small, intrepid band of local
educators, spiritual advocates and community leaders, we are privileged to have
been intimately involved with CRB for most of its 10 year plus existence.
“I (Bob) recall my introduction to the school more than a decade ago. The late
Bishop Joe Sullivan and longtime Catholic Charities fundraiser Joan Murphy
“strong armed” me into attending an Upper Eastside cocktail party on behalf
of this small, start-up high school in Bushwick, Brooklyn. I was intrigued by
its innovative approach to secondary education: its unique requirement that all
students work one day/week in corporate offices, the proposition of exclusively
serving young people of limited economic means while at the same time expecting
all families to modestly contribute to help offset the cost of their child’s education,
and finally, its membership in an emerging, national network of similar
secondary schools. Then a young sophomore by the name of Steven got up to
speak. At first a bit tentative but with growing confidence he thanked his Mother,
an immigrant from Africa, for sacrificing so much in order to provide him with
this small, safe, values-based, college prep education.
His words and sentiments took me back to my own experience growing up decades
earlier on the streets of Brooklyn and being raised myself by a single Mom.
I was hooked right then and there.”
“Unlike Bob, I (Bill) was sold on the Cristo Rey Brooklyn mission long before
visiting, having served on the board and staff of its successful sister school in
East Harlem. But I was wholly unprepared for what greeted me when I first
visited the actual facility. Having opened its doors in a long closed, former elementary
school simultaneous with the advent of the “Great Recession”, CRB
lacked the resources of its older uptown sibling. Suffice it to say, I gained a
keener appreciation for the real-world consequences of the sterile accounting
term “deferred maintenance” that day. But far more importantly, I realized that
if 135 families had entrusted the educational future of their children to this small
school, notwithstanding its physical and financial handicaps, not to mention its
still unproven status, what did that suggest about available alternatives? Were
there even any other viable options? It was then that I knew I had to join Bob
in this venture.”
That was then. In the years since, thanks to the commitment of the Brooklyn
Diocese, the Cristo Rey Network, the Sisters of Mercy, dozens of staff, directors
and volunteers, scores of corporate work study partners and hundreds of
supporters, and of course our students and families, Cristo Rey Brooklyn now
has graduated close to 500 young people, the huge majority of whom have gone
on to successfully matriculate in colleges ranging from Boston to California. We
hope you enjoy this 2019 Annual Report, and our effort to highlight our journey
from then until now.
And we pray you will join us in all our tomorrows as we strive to capitalize
upon our growth, successes and lessons learned to date to ensure that Cristo
Rey Brooklyn becomes a permanent beacon of educational opportunity on the
greater New York City landscape.
With profound gratitude,
William Henson

“...At CRB, I was challenged in every way, shape and form.
Those challenges, although they felt like tough love at the beginning,
were all for a good reason and that was to become the
best version of myself once I graduated... Even though I didn’t
do as well academically as I should have in high school, I did
well enough to earn a scholarship to Marymount Manhattan
College through their Higher Education Opportunity Program.
I knew there was something that I still had to prove and that
was to become a leader academically. Beginning this Fall, I will
be attending New York University’s Steinhardt School for my
Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders
with the goal of becoming a Speech Language Pathologist...”

Computer Lab, Spring 2019
“...I had just completed the Cristo Rey work study
training program required of all incoming students
in the Summer of 2013 when Mr. Henson
announced that the school was moving to a real
high school facility in an effort to advance the
education of the students. With the larger building
we’d have access to a chemistry lab, gym, and
other newer features... With the faster paced science
and math tracks offered students, I excelled
and maintained a great gpa. I ultimately received
22 college acceptances and thanks the support of
my family and teachers, I am currently attending
Stony Brook University as a Biology major on the pre-med track with a minor in
Health, Medicine, and Society, and a concentration in Interdisciplinary Biology. After
I complete my undergraduate education, I plan on attending medical school and hopefully
specializing in neonatology.”

Within a moment’s notice, I can ask students to arrange themselves in collaborative formations and work on a virtual lab or conduct research
on careers in scientific fields. These opportunities provide our students with practical skills they will need to be successful in college and beyond.”

“One of my favorite quotes about kids speaks to the heart of the Cristo Rey
philosophy…
‘If we want our children to move mountains, we first have to let them get
out of their chairs.’ ~ Nicolette Sowder.
Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School provides children with an opportunity to
learn in the classroom and use what they learn in a professional environment.
The school educates the students and the corporate partners support
that education by teaching the students how to use what they learn in real
life situations. It is very rewarding working with the students because they
are happy and enthusiastic. They remind us all of how exciting everyday life
can be, when viewed through the eyes of a young person.”

While pursuing personal interests, our students develop
confidence, discipline, work ethic and leadership skills…
At Cristo Rey Brooklyn, we seek to educate the whole student
and understand that much of a young person’s growth and formation
happens beyond home and classroom. In just a few years,
our sport teams, retreats and student-led clubs have more than
doubled. This is a direct result of the dedication of our students,
staff and volunteers, and the generosity of our supporters. Playing
an interscholastic sport, managing a club or leading a retreat
discussion requires confidence and a unique set of skills and our
students are consistently advancing their talents and interests outside
the classroom.
The growth and development our student-athletes experience has
not been limited to the court or ballfield. Our coaches care about
academic achievement and character development as much, if not
more than wins and losses. By the time our student-athletes are juniors
and seniors, they represent some of the school’s best ambassadors.
This is evidenced by the fact that this year all of our varsity
teams have had near flawless academic eligibility records and on
average achieved a higher GPA than the rest of the student body.

Hoops for Hope Service and Cultural Immersion Trips:
For six consecutive summers, in conjunction with Courts for Kids and
thanks to the program’s benefactor, CRB has participated in an 8-10
day international service project and immersion trip called Hoops For
Hope. As part of the program, students are given the opportunity
to travel to remote, underserved communities around the world and
work with partner organizations to build a multi-purpose basketball
court, join the local people in community activities, and share room
and board with them. Aside from growing spiritually by reflecting and
contributing to communities in need, our students have unanimously
returned back to CRB with a greater appreciation of the opportunities
they have and often look for additional ways to give back.
Student Reflections from Summer 2019 in Buen Hombre, Dominican Republic:
“I got to live someone else’s life for a week and a half
and this really gave me a strong sense of perspective.
This trip helped me value everything that I have and
taught me to never take anything for granted.”
-Andy Abreu, Class of 2020
“I had the opportunity to give back to a community
that was less fortunate than my own. I learned the value
of true selflessness. -Keona Smith, Class of 2020
