school’s Mission, to be considered one of the
best high schools in New York as measured by
academic progress and achievement, graduation
rates, college acceptance and accessibility, and
college and post-graduate success and to do so
without being constrained by or resorting to
labels, qualifiers or reduced expectations (e.g.
low-income, inner-city, minority, faith-based).

Letter from Board Chair, Robert Catell
Dear CRB Friends,
Though Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School opened at the advent of the 2008 Great Recession, the second
half of 2020 was perhaps the most difficult year in our school’s history. However, there was a lot to celebrate
in the midst of adversity. Here are a few examples:
• Our students had record-setting GPA/attendance rates
• Represented in the class of 2020 were CRB’s first Posse & Quest Bridge Scholars
• After adding three new Advanced Placement (AP) courses to our curriculum at the start of the
school year, there was a 20% increase in students who scored a 3 or better on AP exams
Not only was 2020 a challenging year, but it was the start of a new beginning. After nearly a decade of
leadership and service, our President Bill Henson retired from his role and was formally elected Vice-Chair
of the Board of Directors. Right before Bill joined CRB, the school was one meeting away from closing.
In the near decade under Bill’s leadership, Cristo Rey Brooklyn has more than doubled enrollment to 300,
graduated over 500 students, earned full membership status in the Cristo Rey Network (CRN) and New York
State Association of Independent School (NYSAIS) accreditation, grown its CWSP partners to nearly 100
companies, relocated from its original elementary school building to a full-fledged high school facility, and
for the last eight years achieved a 100% college acceptance rate, with nearly all those students receiving at
least one acceptance to a four year college with full financial need met, validating the Cristo Rey model and
positioning the school for the future.
As we prepare for the future, effective July 1, 2020, Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School appointed Joseph
Dugan and Deanna Philippe as President and Principal, respectively. Dugan served as Principal in the last
four of his seven-year tenure with Cristo Rey Brooklyn. With undergraduate and graduate degrees from New
York University, Joe served for many years as teacher, director and vice principal at Bishop Ford Central
Catholic High School prior to joining Cristo Rey Brooklyn. Under his leadership as Cristo Rey Brooklyn’s
chief academic officer, CRB now offers 20 AP and Honors classes, developed dual credit programs with
local higher education partners, significantly expanded faculty professional development opportunities and
training, launched the CRB Summer Institute in 2019 to provide additional advanced and refresher classes
across multiple disciplines and has served in various leadership and advisory roles working with other Network
schools.
Deanna Philippe fills the role of Principal as well prepared, and uniquely qualified as most anyone can be.
With undergraduate and Master’s degrees in English Literature, Philippe will graduate next summer with a
Master’s of Science from Queens College in school leadership. She brings 15 years of secondary level experience
as teacher, coach, Admissions Director and administrator, including six years with Cristo Rey Brooklyn,
the last four as Assistant Principal. Like many CRB students, Deanna is first-generation American, her parents
having immigrated from Haiti, she grew up in East Flatbush, just blocks from the Cristo Rey Brooklyn
facility. As Assistant Principal, she has developed the school’s Academic Support Program, co-chaired the
two-year effort culminating in CRB’s 2018 NYSAIS accreditation, led curriculum, and professional developments
initiatives locally and in conjunction with the CRN, and successfully collaborated to integrate the
school’s academic offerings and practices with its unique Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP).
On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I wish Bill, Joe, and Deanna good luck in their new leadership
roles. As we confront all of the challenges ahead of us, we will think of them as opportunities. We are
grateful for the commitment and support of hundreds of individuals and organizations who have given
Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School a chance to capitalize on such opportunities.
Warmly,
Welcoming our new Leadership Team
5
Thank you, Bill!

Going Remote. Staying Strong.
This year has been physically, mentally, financially, and emotionally challenging for all of us. At CRB, every day since March
13, 2020 has presented a challenge to transform a different aspect of our community. Classes, programs, events, and support
systems shifted online. Our teachers had a few days to rework their lessons in order to engage students for what was initially
projected to be a two-week learning period. As the online learning period extended, the school developed an entirely new
schedule to allow for synchronous and asynchronous learning. For the first time, our students were forced to learn entirely from
home. Despite the uncertainty of times, thanks to our 1:1 technology program implemented in the Fall of 2017, our teachers
and students had technology available for online learning. This allowed them to adapt, explore and learn how to use new technological
learning resources (such as Zoom, Nearpod, Jamboard, etc.) and thus allowing them to make the most of a challenging
semester. Furthermore, keeping our students and their well-being at the center of our decision making, the school decided to
modify the credit recovery completion process, which allowed us to, and focused our efforts in retaining and supporting our
students academically.
Our most recent graduates, the Class of 2020, were faced with more challenges than any of their predecessors. Spring is the
time where seniors start to hear back from colleges, are reviewing their financial options, plan to take their standardized AP tests,
and focus on the planning of senior events. Needless to say, the spring semester of 2020 looked quite different. There were
[and in many cases still are] more questions than answers. How long would the school be closed for? What would final exams
look like? How would this affect our CWSP program, the college application process, and senior events? And most importantly,
how could we support our students? Defying the odds, our senior class excelled and set the standard for the rest of the
student body. Our 79 seniors received over 660 college acceptances and more than $22 million in scholarships and grants. They
committed to 40 different schools with 16 students attending under special scholarship and opportunity programs including
Questbridge, Posse, HEOP/ EOP, and SEEK.

Class of 2020
Due to the postponement of our in-person senior
events, as a way to celebrate our recent graduates,
members of our faculty & staff organized a virtual
Baccalaureate Mass and a special celebration on the
original date of our Commencement ceremony. In
addition, we organized home visits to hand our students
their diplomas!

The Corporate Work Study Program
In the Spotlight:
Retaining and Expanding Opportunity
The financial hardship of the pandemic and
the influx of working remotely led many
offices to reconsider the programs they support.
But stopping the Corporate Work Study
Program entirely was not an option to CRB.
As many Partners reevaluated their commitments,
many stepped up to the challenge and
solidified their commitment to CRB.
Thank you to the following Partners and the
individuals who not only strengthened our
partnerships, but encourage others to do
so. We are grateful for your commitment to
our students, their education, growth, and
development.
Thank you to the following companies, who
became partners during the 2019-2020 school
year:
Access to Opportunity
Our Corporate Work Study Program aims to provide our students exposure to the corporate
world by giving them first-hand experience into entry-level jobs. In turn, they are
able to develop skills, and explore their interest in a variety of sectors. Our students gain
valuable work experience that prepares them for college and beyond.
Opportunity in Action
90+ Partners in 16+ industries
During the 2020 school year, the five student workers (Mehyssa Mondesir ‘23, Latrel
Crandle ‘22, Imani Dickens ‘21, Sebastian Cherry ‘21, and Brandan Joseph ‘20) employed
at Deloitte gave their Winter Presentation, which was a combination of their research on
emotional intelligence and critical thinking tasks and projects, and a showcase of mentors
in their own lives. During their presentations, all of the student workers expressed
sincere gratitude to their supervisors and mentors for their support and guidance. They
thanked our partners at Deloitte for going above and beyond their own jobs to support
them in their academic and career development, and foster diversity and inclusion at
Deloitte. These students benefited from the experience at Deloitte, by building relationships
with mentors, learning presentation etiquette and gaining the confidence and
experience to present to a large group. These are skills that they can transfer when taking
a college class, applying for internships, and presenting projects. Our Corporate Partners,
such as Deloitte, have a direct impact on the growth and development of our students.
By employing our students, they provide their employees exposure to the communities
we serve, while offering the opportunity to mentor our students. In turn, students then
become potential hires with valuable knowledge and experience within the company.
“One of the many things that I took away
from my experience at Deloitte is how
important networking is. Networking
makes anything that you are doing much
easier because you can have the help of
others. Networking allowed me to create
great relationships with my colleagues
and tap into them when I need support.”
-Brandan Joseph, Class of 2020

Beyond the Classroom.
Much of a high schooler’s development happens outside the classroom. Teen years are an important time for one to explore various interests and discover what they
may or may not enjoy. At CRB, sports, clubs, activities, and retreats provide students an opportunity to develop social, hard, and soft skills. They learn communication,
time-management, discipline, team work, self-reflection and awareness, amongst other skills. They are able to learn from and teach each other. Prior to the pandemic, our
students had the opportunity to grow beyond the classroom through retreats, excursions, field trips, and on-site events.
Summer of 2019: Rising seniors spent a week in the Dominican
Republic for CRB’s annual Hoops for Hope initiative.
Wilderness Retreat
Color Week Event
Peer Leaders on the first day of Anti-Bullying Month Freshman Boys Overnight Retreat Freshman Girls Overnight Retreat
Our AP Environmental Science class took a trip to the Newtown Creek
Wastewater Treatment Plant in Greenpoint, where they learned about where
our water comes from, and what happens to it after its used.
During the fall, alumni came to share their college experience and
answer questions from our rising seniors.
Our school community celebrated Black History Month with
over 10 performances in front of more than 300 people.
12
Athletics
Last fall, our boys soccer team made history at Fordham University by winning the CHSAA Class B City Championship by a score of 2-1 over Moore Catholic.
CRB has earned two Brooklyn-Queens Championships to date, but this was the school’s first city title. The team earned a regular season league record of 8-3-2
and then fought to win three playoff games on their way to the championship. During the winter, our girls basketball team finished an outstanding regular season
with a league record of 8-4 and then went on to win two playoff games as they advanced to the city championship. Our indoor track season was highlighted by
freshman Jazmin Rogers who placed 2nd at the Brooklyn-Queens Sectional Championship. This performance earned Jazmin her first medal and a spot in the
Eastern States Championship. Unfortunately spring sports were canceled because of Covid-19, however our baseball team was poised for their first full season
in the CHSAA and our softball team boasted 15 seniors and had their eyes on a city championship. In 2019-20, over 50% of the student population played at
least one sport or planned on playing a spring sport, eight students earned the Three Sport Athlete Award and there are six alumni from the class of 2020 who
are currently pursuing a career as a student-athlete in the NCAA. Keeping students engaged outside of synchronous and asynchronous learning via the web was
and still is a challenge. Our Athletic Director, Matt Kenny, encouraged athletes to complete workouts from home. In conjunction with coaches, Mr. Kenny shared
workout routines for students to perform at home. Senior student Emmanuel Kenscoff, Class of 2020, was featured in The Tablet online, sharing his experience
regarding at home workouts!
Varsity Boys Soccer Team won the CHSAA Class B City Championship!
Girls Varsity Basketball Team
Jazmin Rogers, Class of 2023
Emmanuel Kenscoff, Class of 2020
“I think you lose more motivation to keep exercising
while staying at home, so it’s always nice to just go
outside and go on a run,” Kenscoff said. “Going out
and running on your own … it feels great. Keeping up
with the workout schedule keeps my mind off the virus.
I just want to keep running.”
“ ”
Sticking to a routine has given the Cristo Rey Brooklyn
runners a sense of hope. There are still some unknowns
to overcome, but constantly improving will set them up
for long-term success. -Excerpt from The Tablet article

Ways to Support
Hire a Student:
Our students are motivated in their personal growth and the many
opportunities the CWSP provides them. By hiring one of our
students, you are investing in their growth, education, and communities.
Partner with a Panther:
Our Corporate Work Study Program allows Professionals of
all experience levels to mentor a student. Mentors are matched
with a sophomore, junior or senior student and hold bi-monthly
30-minute meetings.
Panther Share:
Share your personal experience, workforce knowledge, development
journey and/or expertise on a specific topic with a student
panel. These panels allow our students to learn from experts in
the fields and ask as many questions as they want.
To learn more about partnering with a student, hosting a panel,
and hiring a student contact our CWSP team at:
cwsp@cristoreybrooklyn.org
Attend an Event:
Our Advancement Team is organizing a variety of events to
support our students and close the funding gap. Attending an
event allows you to learn more about our school, interact with our
amazing students – all while having a great time! To learn more
about upcoming events, visit:
