SQUAD GOALS
All the facts, figures and

home line-up
3
W
E have had a lot of
positives to build
on recently and the
number of late
goals we’ve scored in the last
few weeks has been one of
them - but we cannot get away
from the fact we’ve been conceding
plenty, too.
I felt we were worthy of what
would have been a battling point
against Glentoran on Saturday
only to be undone by a great
strike from young Jamie
McDonagh. While you can’t necessarily
legislate for that kind of
goal, nor can you just dismiss it
when it’s the latest in a recent
line of late goals against us.
Crusaders equalised here in the
93rd minute and, while it didn’t
stop us winning the game, Linfield
were also on target in injury
-time. Take the Crues’ and Glens’
goals out of the equation and
we’re sitting here three points
better off already - and that’s
just over the course of the last
month.
On the other hand, we earned
deserved draws thanks to very
late efforts against Glenavon and
Coleraine over the past few
weeks, while the year began with
us defeating Dungannon Swifts
in injury-time.
We’ve shown time and again that
we have the stomach to fight
until the very end but, at the
same time, we need to learn
“

lessons from all of the late hits
we’ve taken.
I thought our performance at
Coleraine this night last week
was excellent when you consider
the amount of new players we
had in the mix on what was a bit
of a notorious pitch. We got off
to a great start with Rory Hale’s
goal and we finished the game
very strongly, with Paul O’Neill
really unlucky to hit the post just
a minute or two after equalising.
The goals we conceded, however,
came from individual errors
and that goes back to us
making sure we eradicate
things like that from our
game.
There have been quite a few
matches this season
where, if you take
out the goals we
have handed our
opponents, they
haven’t threatened
us outside
of that, which
only goes to
show how tight
the margins are.

R
YAN Curran says he’s
excited to be part of a
Cliftonville attack that
was significantly bolstered
during the January
Transfer Window.
Despite the season-ending injury
suffered by the Club’s all-time
leading scorer Joe Gormley last
month, the Reds nevertheless
find themselves with a string of
options at the top end of the
pitch following the arrivals of
Eoin Teggart, Daniel Kearns and
Paul O’Neill.
The latter of the trio opened his
scoring account when Coleraine
provided his debut opposition
last Tuesday night, while Rory
Hale - another recent signing -
provided further proof of the
threat he offers with an eyecatching
opening goal in the
same game.
Curran registered a number of
vital strikes during January -
including the late leveller
against Glenavon that was subsequently
voted Goal of the
Month by supporters - but he
knows he and his team-mates
have to deliver on a regular
basis.
“I got a few goals in
January myself and was a bit
quiet the last two games,” he
admits.
“I think everybody has acknowledged
that we have to step up to
the plate in terms of losing Joe’s
goals. Joe is probably guaranteed
about 20-30 goals a season
since he’s came to Cliftonville.
“I think between myself, Paul
O’Neill, Daniel Kearns and Daire
O’Connor, we’ve had a fair few
signings and we all need to chip
in with a few goals. Paul got
himself off the mark and Rory
Hale as well since he came in and
we need to all chip in.
“Up until Saturday where we
drew a blank, I think we were
scoring goals and creating
chances but, for whatever reason
on Saturday, we probably
weren’t as free flowing and creating
as many chances as we
would have liked.”
That last-gasp defeat to
Glentoran was Cliftonville’s first
loss in six outings but Curran,
who started the recent flurry of
late goals when he netted an
injury-time penalty to see off
Dungannon Swifts in the team’s
first fixture of the New Year, is
pleased to have been handed an
early opportunity to get back on
track - although he’s aware of
the threat Warrenpoint Town will
pose.
“It’s probably a good thing that
the game is coming around so
fast because after Saturday’s
disappointment, we want to put
things right,” he says.
“We didn’t do ourselves justice
on Saturday and I think we’ve a
point to prove to ourselves as
well as the fans.”
“Warrenpoint are just off the
back of a good result at the
weekend.
“I think they’re probably better
than the table says and the
points they’ve accumulated this
year. They’ve beat Linfield this
year and have some very good
players.
“They’re a good side, we played
them earlier in the season and
beat them 3-0 so we’ll be looking
to get a win and try and be as
convincing as possible. But I
think the main thing is to get a
win and a performance and do
ourselves justice from the disappointment
of Saturday.”

W
HILE it
would be easy to
flippantly claim
that removing the
threat of relegation will have
come as a major boost to Warrenpoint
Town, the fact is their
own form meant they needn’t
have harboured any such worries.
In both of his stints in the
Milltown dugout, boss Barry Gray
has strived to change the perception
of a Club whom many
believe should simply be content
with Danske Bank Premiership
survival every season.
A summer transfer recruitment
process of some significance
yielded a new-look squad that
defied the conventional wisdom
of players needing time to settle
into new surroundings.
After suffering a narrow defeat
to Crusaders on the opening day
of the campaign, Town enjoyed a
convincing away day success
over Dungannon Swifts before
being held to a home draw by
newly promoted Portadown.
Though November delivered
struggles on the road - a 3-0
reverse here at Solitude being
followed up by a 2-0 loss at the
hands of Ballymena United - the
first signs of Milltown becoming
a relative fortress came when
Larne were fortunate to escape
with a 1-1 draw ahead of the
County Down side registering
their first ever victory over Linfield.
Having already overcome Dungannon,
a 3-1 success over a
Carrick Rangers outfit whom
many had tipped Warrenpoint to
join in a relegation scrap, further
served to demonstrate that
Gray’s charges had ambitions
much further up the standings.
An almost comical setback at
Coleraine - when Point’s ninemen
banked a last minute equaliser
only to concede virtually
instantly - did not throw them off
track, as a goalless draw with
Glentoran at The Oval three days
later underlined.
While Glenavon would inflict a
home defeat just before Christmas
and Town’s 2021 got off to a
disastrous start courtesy of
thumpings at Crusaders (4-0)
and Linfield (6-0), their 2-0 triumph
over Portadown at Shamrock
Park a week-and-a-half ago
steadied the ship somewhat
ahead of a second 1-1 draw of
the season with Larne following
on Saturday past.
Having fallen behind early on at
Inver Park, Gray could have been
forgiven for fearing the worst -
especially in the aftermath of
those tankings at Seaview and
Windsor - but, far from being
lucky to emerge with a point, his
troops were arguably the more
likely winners at the home of
Tiernan Lynch’s titlechallengers.
They will bid to back that up with
a first ever 90-minute victory at
Solitude this evening - little
more than a decade since Gray
oversaw their infamous penalty
shootout success on Irish Cup
duty.
While the cancellation of the
Bluefin Sport Championship
season means fear of relegation
is not an issue, all the evidence
suggests that Warrenpoint had
no concerns in that regard anyway
after a promising opening
few months of the term.
