All the facts, figures and

home line-up
3
I
T goes without saying that
Portadown’s equaliser last
week was very tough to
take, especially as we have
conceded a number of late
goals that have cost us points
recently.
We’ve scored a few ourselves but
that comes as no comfort to
anyone when we’re left reflecting
on what might have been
when we look back at draws
against the Ports and Crusaders,
as well as the loss to Glentoran -
there’s five points that have all
been lost in the final minute.
It’s also something we experienced
the last time we played
Larne, so it’s an issue we need to
learn from and deal with.
Last week’s game also saw us
denied the latest in a long line of
what looked like stonewall penalty
kicks and, while there’s no
guarantee of scoring them or
how the game will pan out after
that, I think it’s fair to assume
we’d have enjoyed a better spell
of form had we been awarded
one against Portadown and
Glentoran, plus we’d a few
shouts against Glenavon in addition
to a goal which television
replays have since proved was
incorrectly ruled out for offside.
There’s no point in complaining
about these things, though -
firstly because nobody seems to
be listening and also because
you can’t rewind time to fix it.
“
It was nice not to have a midweek game
on Tuesday so that we could have a full week
of proper training.
”
4
You just have to hope the referee
spots these things on the day
and you’d like to think our luck
will turn sooner or later on that
front.
One thing we can control, however,
are our own performances.
Like everyone else, we’ve found
ourselves stuck in a bit of a hectic
schedule lately but it was nice
not to have a midweek game on
Tuesday so that we could have a
full week of proper training -
something none of our seven
January signings have experienced
since they came to the
Club.
The games are about to hit us
thick and fast again, so we’ll
need to make sure we step up to
meet every challenge,
starting today.
Larne are a hugely
talented side who
are quite rightly
being talked up as
potential Champions
and, as
they’ve shown
all season long,
are capable of
getting wins
against anyone
at any
venue.
Our players
will relish
today’s task
and, far
from feeling
sorry for
ourselves
over how
recent weeks
have gone, we
must go out
with a determination
to
work hard
for the
points.

A
FTER banking two
goals in his first four
appearances for the
Club, it’s little wonder
Paul O’Neill is relishing each
new Cliftonville matchday.
The Northern Ireland Under-21
international, who joined from
Glentoran as part of the deal
that took Conor McMenamin to
The Oval on Transfer Deadline
Day at the end of last month, has
started all four games of his
Reds career to date and made a
positive early impression with a
late equaliser against Coleraine
on his debut.
He opened his home account
with a fine finish against Warrenpoint
Town a week-and-a-half
ago and believes that continuing
to develop familiarity with the
players around him can keep him
on the goal trail.
“The more I play, the better I’ll
get with the rest of players,” he
insists.
“Ryan Curran and myself are
building up a good relationship
now and a good understanding.
Moving forward, if we can keep
that up then it’s going to start
moving us up the table and we’re
going to start winning more
games.”
The next challenge on the horizon
is this afternoon’s Danske
Bank Premiership encounter with
Larne and, while well aware of
the threat the visitors will pose,
O’Neill insists that he and his
team-mates will approach the
contest in a positive frame of
mind.
“Larne like to get the ball down
and pop it about and play good
football, we know they’re going
to do that but we can do the
same,” explains the current
Young Footballer of the Year.
“Since I’ve came in here, I’ve
noticed the quality within the
side. We can get the ball down
and play football and it’s always
a good way to play. If we play
our normal game and the way we
can play then there is no reason
why we can’t take the threepoints.”
Something that has stopped
Cliftonville collecting a greater
pool of points in recent weeks
has been the concession of late
goals, which continued against
Portadown at Shamrock Park
last weekend.
Indeed, every Reds fixture in
2021 has produced a goal in the
final four minutes, with O’Neill’s
86th minute equaliser at the
Coleraine Showgrounds the
earliest the scoring has been
settled in any match since the
turn of the year.
Though the Reds have benefited
from last-gasp goals against
Dungannon Swifts, Glenavon
Linfield and Warrenpoint Town,
they have also shipped strikes to
Crusaders, the Blues, Glentoran
and now the Ports, with O’Neill
adding: “It was a disappointing
way to end the game, I think
that’s the last six games where
there has been a goal in the last
four or five minutes.
“The previous Saturday away to
the Glens, they scored in the
89th minute and we should have
seen the game out and I’d a
couple of chances myself. We
have to get out of this habit of
conceding late goals.”

A
NY Larne fan would
have bitten your arm
off for the position the
Inver Reds find themselves
in as we approach the
halfway point of the season.
Tiernan Lynch's men are currently
sitting pretty in second place
in the Danske Bank Premiership,
just a couple of points off Linfield
at the top and well positioned in
the race for Europe.
All of the leading sides have had
a spell where they have gone a
few games without winning and
January was when Larne had
theirs.
The opening month of 2021
presented the first real test of
the squad's resolve with home
defeats against Ballymena United
and Coleraine and draws
which could have been wins
against both Crusaders and
Glentoran.
The Inver Men hadn't missed a
beat before Christmas, topping
the Premiership and winning the
County Antrim Shield, so a four
game winless run was a shock to
the system, but Larne have got
back on track in February with
28 16
eight points from the last 12 on
offer.
It could so easily have been four
wins from four too, as they were
denied victories by late equalisers
against Warrenpoint Town
and Portadown.
However, with games coming
thick and fast, there is no time
to cry about spilt milk. This
season's Larne team is an
upgrade on last season's
squad. Its record against their
rivals for European places has
been much better and they go
into every game with a realistic
expectation of winning all three
points. They will approach the
second half of the season very
much on the front foot.
Former Crusaders and Linfield
defender Josh Robinson's addition
to the backline has brought
much needed title winning experience,
Ronan Hale - brother of
Cliftonville midfielder Rory - has
brought an unpredictability to
Larne's attacking play and recent
acquisition Dylan Mottley-Henry
has added more pace on the
flanks.
Of course, Marty Donnelly remains
the
team's most
creative influence
and in Fuad
Sule, Larne have the
League's finest defensive
midfield player - and Lynch will
be looking to all five to make a
contribution this afternoon.
