VANGUARD, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2021 — 37 El Chapo’s wife arrested in US over drug trafficking THE wife of jailed Mex ican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán has been arrested in the US on suspicion of drug trafficking, US authorities say. Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, was detained at Dulles International Airport outside Washington DC. She is charged with participating in a conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana. Guzmán is currently serving a life sentence in New York for drug trafficking and money laundering. The 63-year-old is a former head of the Sinaloa cartel, which officials say was the biggest supplier of drugs to the US. His trial in 2019 heard shocking revelations about his life, from drugging and raping girls as young as 13 to carrying out the coldblooded murders of former cartel members and rivals. Ms Coronel Aispuro is due to appear in a federal court in DC via video conference, the US justice department said. As well as facing drug trafficking charges, she is also accused of conspiring with others to help her husband escape from prison in Mexico in 2015. He was sprung from Mexico’s maximum-security Altiplano prison after his sons bought a property near the prison and a GPS watch smuggled into the prison gave diggers his exact location. He escaped by riding a specially adapted small motorcycle through the tunnel. Court documents said Ms Coronel Aispuro was allegedly involved in planning another prison escape for her husband before he was extradited to the US in January 2017. She has not commented on the charges. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the arrest was “a matter that the United States will decide”, but said he hoped the US would share more of the details. Bazoum declared winner of Niger’s presidential election, opponent alleges fraud NIGER’s ruling party candidate Mohamed Bazoum was declared on Tuesday the winner of its presidential election, while his opponent alleged fraud and opposition supporters burned tyres in the streets. Bazoum, a 61-year-old former interior minister, won 55.75% of the vote in Sunday’s election, according to the electoral commission. He beat out Mahamane Ousmane, a former president who was toppled by a coup in 1996. The provisional results must still be confirmed by the constitutional court. The election is meant to usher in Niger’s first transition from one democratically elected leader to another, with President Mahamadou Issoufou stepping down after two fiveyear terms. Shortly before the results were declared, Ousmane’s campaign alleged widespread fraud, including the theft and stuffing of ballot boxes and threats against voters. It did not provide any evidence. “We demand the immediate suspension of the publication of these results, which do not in any way take into account the expressed will of the Nigerien people for change,” Ousmane’s campaign manager said in a statement. Outside Ousmane’s campaign headquarters and in other parts of the capital Niamey, his supporters protested by burning tyres. Police fired tear gas to disperse them. The electoral commission has not yet commented on the allegations of irregularities. The vote was also marred by two attacks that killed eight people in two regions of the country where Islamist militants are active, commission president Issaka Souna said. Seven of the victims were election workers in the western Tillabery region, near the border with Mali, whose vehicle struck a landmine as they headed to the polls. Facebook reverses ban on news pages in Australia FACEBOOK has an nounced it will restore news content to its users in Australia. The tech giant has blocked news to Australians on its platform since last Thursday amid a dispute over a proposed law which would force it and Google to pay news publishers for content. Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg had told him the ban would end “in the coming days”, after the pair had talks. Mr Frydenberg said amendments would be made to the law. “Facebook has re-friended Australia,” he told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday. The government has been debating the law - seen as a possible test case for regulation globally - in the Senate, after it was passed in the lower house last week. Last Thursday, Australians woke up to find they could not access or share any news stories on their accounts. Facebook argued it had been forced to block Australian news in response to the proposed legislation. The government’s news code aims to set up a “fairer” negotiation process between the tech giants and news companies over the value of news content. But it has been strongly opposed by Facebook and Google - both argue the code misunderstands how the internet works. Facebook has also said it gets little commercial gain from news content. Hutu rebels accuse DRC, Rwanda after Italian ambassador killed RWANDAN Hutu rebels denied allegations they were behind the killing of the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and instead accused the armies of the DRC and Rwanda of responsibility. An Italian Carabinieri unit, meanwhile, was expected in DRC on Tuesday to investigate. Luca Attanasio died of his wounds on Monday after a World Food Programme (WFP) convoy came under fire near the eastern city of Goma while he was on a field trip. The Italian government said an Italian policeman, Vittorio Iacovacci, and a driver it did not identify also died. DRC’s interior ministry blamed the killings on “members of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda [FDLR]”, a Rwandan Hutu rebel group that has plagued the region for more than a quarter of a century. But the FDLR rejected the allegation in a statement received by AFP news agency on Tuesday. It said the ambassador’s convoy was attacked near the Rwandan border, “not far from a position of the FARDC [DRC’s armed forces] and Rwandan soldiers”. “The responsibility for this despicable killing is to be found in the ranks of these two armies and their sponsors who have forged an unnatural alliance to perpetuate the pillaging of eastern DRC,” it said. The FDLR denied “being involved in the attack” and called on Kinshasa and UN peacekeeping force MO- NUSCO to “shed light” on the killings “instead of resorting to hasty accusations”.
