Commit to a Cure
We are excited to invite you to the in-person 45th Annual Killebrew-Thompson Memorial, August 18-21, 2021
at the beautiful Sun Valley Resort.
Our organization was founded with one goal: to find a cure for cancer. Since 1977, KTM has contributed $18.9
million toward life-saving cancer research at Idaho’s St. Luke’s Cancer Institute and the Masonic Cancer
Center, University of Minnesota. Our beneficiaries maximize our annual donation three to fivefold thru
matching grants and other funds, making KTM one of the most impactful uses of your charitable dollars.
In 2020, we pivoted to a remote golf tournament and virtual auction gala, and our dedicated supporters jumped
onboard. The result was a $500,000 donation that enabled our beneficiaries to focus on cutting edge research,
some of which even shows promise in treating COVID-19. We hope you will help maintain the momentum by
considering a corporate or promotional sponsorship detailed in this packet. If you do not see a perfect fit, we
are happy to customize an opportunity for you.
KTM is about raising money for cancer research. It is also about creating hope
and better outcomes for cancer patients and their families. While a lot of
progress has been made, there is still so much to do. Your support takes us
one step closer to a cancer-free future.
I look forward to personally welcoming you to Sun Valley!
Hannah Stauts
Executive Director

COVID PROTOCOL
Killebrew-Thompson Memorial is getting back on the course! With social distancing guidelines in place, we are confident
we can host a safe and responsible setting for an in-person event. Golf naturally lends itself to social distancing on the
course. Below is an overview of the procedures in place to ensure the safety of all attendees.
Registration
Registration will be touchless. Golfers shop online
prior to the event to select their tee gifts. Checkin
will be held outdoors where golfers can pick
up their registration packets and pre-selected
tee gift items. Face masks, hand sanitizer, and
disinfecting wipes will be provided.
To further limit physical contact, we encourage
participants to register, purchase raffle tickets
and mulligans, and complete payments on our
website prior to the event.
Food & Beverage Service
Self-service options (buffets, beverage stations)
will be limited in favor of pre-packaged grab-andgo
food and beverages on the course and plated
meals served by Sun Valley catering staff.
Social Events
All social functions will be held outdoors to allow
for ample social distancing. Hand sanitizer and
masks will be available throughout the event.
Sun Valley Resort Golf Course Policies
* per Sun Valley Company website as of March 3, 2021.
1. Tee time reservations are required for [practice
rounds] and will be set up in 15-minute intervals.
2. Golfers are discouraged from congregating in
groups around the tee or clubhouse prior to play
and are expected to maintain an appropriate
social distance of at least 6-feet at all times.
3. Golf carts are limited to one golfer per cart,
unless other golfers are immediate family or live
in the same household, or at golfer discretion.
4. No sand and seed bottles, ball washers, towels,
or bunker rakes will be available. Golfers are
requested to smooth bunker sand out with club
head or foot upon exiting.
5. Refrain from touching flagsticks on the course.
6. Clubhouse facilities will remain closed so locker
rooms and bag storage will not be available.
Event details and protocols are subject to change,
pending state and local COVID-19 guidelines.
Participants are advised to use their best judgment.

OUR HISTORY
From the Baseball Diamond
to the Golf Green
Danny Thompson played shortstop for the Minnesota Twins for
only one season before being diagnosed with leukemia at the
age of 26. Refusing to let his illness get him down, he went on to
play two more seasons while undergoing treatment. He lost his
battle with leukemia in 1976.
Danny Thompson
1947 – 1976
To honor Danny’s memory and support the fight against leukemia,
Baseball Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew and Congressman
Ralph Harding established the Danny Thompson Memorial Golf
Tournament Leukemia Research Benefit. The inaugural event
was held in 1977 in Sun Valley, Idaho. The guest list included
President Gerald Ford, Speaker of the House Thomas “Tip” O’Neill,
Mickey Mantle, and Joe DiMaggio.
Harmon Killebrew lost his own battle with esophageal cancer
in 2011. The tournament was renamed the Killebrew-Thompson
Memorial in memoriam.
ABOUT US
The Killebrew-Thompson Memorial is dedicated to raising funds for
leukemia and cancer research through an annual charity event held
in Sun Valley, Idaho. Since 1977, individuals from across the country
have gathered with one goal in mind: to find a cure for cancer.
Since 1977, KTM has funded
$18.9 million
in cancer research & care
The Killebrew-Thompson Memorial is now one of the leading cancer
research fundraisers of its kind. What began as a golf tournament among
friends and associates has evolved beyond the golf course into a four-day
affair showcasing the best of Sun Valley. The event lineup includes an
Idaho Welcome BBQ, Auction Gala, Concert for a Cure, and much more.
Discover why this event has become an enduring tradition for so many.
Join us, and together we can take a swing at cancer.

SURVIVOR SPOTLIGHT
Sarah Ewald
A high school cross-country runner and skier, Sarah Ewald “always had
nasty things on [her] feet.” So when the 18-year-old noticed a lump on
her left foot, she thought nothing of it.
When the lump continued to grow, her doctor ordered a battery
of tests. The results revealed a soft-tissue tumor called alveolar
rhabdomyosarcoma and that cancer had spread to her pancreas.
Sarah was referred to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital where she started on a 54-week treatment
regimen, which included surgery to remove her pancreas and a portion of her spleen, radiation, and a clinical trial in a promising
new chemotherapy.
“At my very first appointment, my oncologist said, ‘I could rattle off the stats for you all day, but I want you to focus on being
100% cancer-free. That’s where we’re going to get you.’”
Sarah enjoyed fifteen cancer-free months until a lump appeared in her thigh. She put her boxing gloves back on once again
and focused on getting healthy. Sarah underwent surgery and another round of radiation and enrolled in another trial, led by
hematologist/oncologist Dr. Brenda Weigel. “The results were so positive that the trial actually ended early,” Sarah explained.
The 28-year-old has been cancer-free for seven years. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2016, married her
childhood friend, Mark Ulrich, in 2018, and now works for her family’s company. Sarah and her husband live in the Twin Cities
with their dog, Bear, whose been with Sarah ever since her first bout with cancer.
“I’m grateful for so much. I think I’m doing so well now because of the [clinical] studies. I’m thankful to the people who are
funding cancer research and to the people who are doing the research. Research will help more kids reach milestones like
going to college and getting married. And help them do so with minimal long-term side effects.”

OUR BENEFICIARIES
Proceeds from the Killebrew-Thompson Memorial advance cancer research and care at St. Luke’s
Cancer Institute and Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota. KTM has donated more
than $18.9 million to these institutions, which has gone directly to cancer research. Our beneficiaries
leverage these funds three-to-five fold through matching grants and other funds, increasing the
impact of our donation up to $5 million annually.
St. Luke’s Cancer Institute (SLCI) brings cuttingedge
clinical trials to Idaho and the Northwest.
SLCI provides access to experimental treatments
usually only available at hospitals in larger
metropolitan areas. Funds contributed by KTM
cover research costs incurred by both enrolled
patients and SLCI itself, making accessible new
treatment pathways.
The Masonic Cancer Center (MCC) is advancing
cancer care beyond the chemotherapy and radiation
treatments of the past. MCC is preeminent in the
research of cell therapies to treat leukemia and
solid tumor cancers. Support from KTM seeds high
impact studies that contribute to the worldwide
research community and that improve quality of life
for patients and survivors.
GOLF COURSES
Elkhorn Golf Course
First opened in 1974, the Elkhorn Golf Course represents
the last collaboration between legendary father-son design
team Robert Trent Jones, Senior and Junior. Trent Jones, Sr.
designed the rather hilly front nine. His son designed the
back nine, which follows a creek and presents water hazards
on all but one hole.
The undulating greens, 7,214 yards long from the tips, boast
over 100 sand traps and bunkers and feature scenic vistas
extending from the Elkhorn hillsides to Sun Valley’s White
Clouds golf course. The course underwent renovations in
2004 and was acquired by Sun Valley Company in 2011.
Trail Creek Golf Course
Golf Digest ranked Sun Valley Resort as one of the top 75
resort courses in North America. Trail Creek is Sun Valley’s
signature course and promises a challenging round of golf
for every level of player.
Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed the traditional alpine course
in 1980 with a full complement of stream carries and ominous
bunkers well-positioned to catch the errant shot. Play crosses
the beautiful Trail Creek seven times on the front nine alone!
Coupled with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains
and ever-present clear blue skies, a round of golf on the Trail
Creek Course is a prized addition to any golf resume.
