becoming the first theater in the country to install hospital grade UV lights
How to Be More Courteous
If common courtesy is not a part of your daily routine, then this is the day
to start implementing courtesy into your life. Try it; not only will the other
person appreciate it, but you will feel good about it also. Practicing daily
kindness will not only make others feel better and reflect positively upon
yourself, it can make you feel good too. Here are some examples of how
you can celebrate Common Courtesy Day:
MARCH 21ST IS COMMON COURTESY DAY
Queue jumpers, finger clicking… people that board the train carriage
before giving you the chance to get off. What about those people that
never say “please” or people that read your messages but don’t reply for
days? Common Courtesy Day gives people the opportunity to be more…
well, ‘courteous’ - even if it’s just for one day out of the entire year.
In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, courtesy is described as a: behavior
marked by polished manners or respect for others: courteous behavior b:
a courteous and respectful act or expression. Common courtesy can be as
simple as saying “please” and “thank you” when asking for and receiving a
service, gift or assistance. Kindness and courtesy do go a long way and are
noticed by others even if you do not realize it. Letting someone in front
of you in traffic is easy. Hold open a door for someone or give a person a
hand with his groceries. Give up your seat on the bus to someone who
might need it. Introduce yourself to the new employee or kid at school
and take the time to introduce her to the rest of the crew. These are just a
few examples of small things that make a difference to someone else. They
are momentary deeds of being courteous. The aim of Common Courtesy
Day is to practice common courtesy for one day and encourage others
to do the same. According to the Collins English dictionary, Courtesy is
defined as: politeness, respect and consideration for others.
• Greet people with “good morning” and “good afternoon.”
• Give up your seat for someone who may need it more.
• When you drink the last of the milk in the fridge, replace it.
• Hold the door.
• Place the cardboard tube from the toilet paper holder in the bin and
replace with fresh roll.
• Refill the printer with paper when it runs out.
• Pay someone a compliment.
• When you ‘borrow’ a pen, actually give it back.
• Contact someone you’ve not spoken to in a while.
• Complain less.
• Instead of getting mad, appreciate that the person that just barked at
you is probably just having a bad day.
• Feed the homeless.
• Do a spot of cleaning at home or at work.
• Leave someone a ‘thank you’ note.
• Respect the environment - don’t litter and maybe consider walking to
work instead of driving.
The founder of Common Courtesy Day is a complete mystery, but we
can’t argue that this is an amazing opportunity for us to implement more
courtesy into our daily lives.
NATIONAL PROPOSAL DAY
This day is for those who have waited patiently for that special someone
to pop the question without success. March 20 th is National Proposal Day.
Observed on both the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes, National Proposal
Day is an opportunity to let the loved one in your life know you are open
to a marriage proposal. Where subtle hints have not worked, a more direct
approach may be required. Proposal Day was created by John Michael
O’Loughlin. For more information, visit www.proposalday.com.
Source:
https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-proposal-day-march-21/
5 THINGS TO REMEMBER ON PROPOSAL DAY
So the day has finally come. After weeks of searching for the perfect ring,
planning the perfect venue, speaking with her parents and (GULP) asking
for her father’s permission, you are finally ready to say those 4 simple
words. WHAT AM I DOING? Will You Marry Me? We’ve compiled our list of
the 5 things to remember on Proposal Day based on years of experience
and the stories of thousands of guys just like you. Enjoy.
Confirm your reservations!
The last thing you need today is someone else you are relying on to
not come through. Give a quick call to the restaurant where you made
your reservation and remind them what you are doing tonight. Most
restaurants love to help and get involved so don’t be afraid to drop the
P word! If you’ve hired a photographer or asked a friend to take some
pictures to capture the moment, touch base with them as well.
Practice
It is a proven fact that proposing is not a natural function of the common
man (well maybe not proven but it should be). How do you overcome
that tongue that keeps getting in the way? Practice, Practice, Practice.
Start by writing down all the reasons why you want to marry her and
remember that this is your time to express your love for her. Be natural
and don’t memorize your “script,” just practice so when the time comes,
it will flow naturally.
6
Calm Your Nerves
If you wake up in a cold sweat the day of the proposal, you are not alone.
Sharing our feelings and being vulnerable top the list of things that don’t come
naturally. Take some time the morning of the proposal to relax and calm your
nerves. A workout at the gym or a nice run will work, but even just taking an
hour to relax with a cup of coffee can do wonders to get you into the right
frame of mind. Remind yourself throughout the day that no one is expecting
perfection. It is usually the things that go wrong that make the proposal
memorable and fun! If you can’t seem to get a handle on your nerves, just be
sure to grab some of that extra strength antiperspirant and apply liberally!
Get Your Props
Props may not be the right word, after all, you’re probably not filming a movie.
Basically, I’m talking about all the little things you may need to pull this off
without a hitch. Do you want to have her favorite flowers on the table, a glass of
champagne for the celebration after or did you want to wear that shirt that she
loves so much on you? Make sure these things are ready. Nothing is worse than
realizing that you don’t have clean underwear 30 minutes before your date!
The Ring
This may seem like a no brainer but it must be said! The ring is a symbol of this
awesome step in your relationship and really is the centerpiece of this entire
night. Make sure you know where you are going to place your ring. Fumbling
to find the pocket you put the ring in is an unnecessary source of awkward
silence. Know where you put the ring! And as an added bonus, I will throw this
in as a freebie… Stick to a pocket, putting the ring in food is so not OK.
The Proposal Day is going to be memorable for both of you so just be
yourself and let her know why she is the one. I do have one other “remember
to…” Even if you forget all your lines, your props, the reservations and the
clean underwear, don’t forget to get down on one knee. The proposal will
just flow from there. While I realize it’s not the 1950’s, this is one tradition
that is still going strong. She will love this classic and beautiful display of
respect for her and this moment. I hope you find these helpful.
MARCH 13TH RECOGNIZES
NATIONAL K9 VETERANS DAY
National K9 Veterans Day is a day set aside to honor commemorate the
service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout
history.
A lot of things changed after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Oil,
leather and rubber were rationed. Men were drafted. Women rolled up
their sleeves and built war supplies. And dogs were called to duty. During
the first world war, the United States took notice of the European use of
canines as sentries, message carriers and several other functions.
Dogs for Defense was a program initiated by a private citizen by the
name of Mrs. Alene Erlanger. Along with the American Kennel Club and
a handful of breeders, the group aimed to train the dogs for military use.
It was on March 13, 1942, that the Army began training for its new War
Dog Program, also known as the “K-9 Corps,” according to American
Humane, marking the first time that dogs were officially a part of the U.S.
Armed Forces. The rest, as they say, is history. By November of 1942, the
first Dogs for Defense were prepared for duty in North Africa. While at first
they were gun shy, they proved to be well trained. As the war progressed,
Dogs for Defense was unable to keep up with the demand and the
Remount Branch, Service Installations Divisions took over training of the
dogs.
Officially a part of the service of not, the dogs of war span centuries and
include such heroes as Sgt. Stubby, the original war dog, Chips, the most
decorated dog in World War II and Lex, who retired with his fallen owners
family and Cairo, the Navy SEAL working dog on the bin Laden raid.
Military Working Dogs are a vital part of today’s fighting force. With builtin
radar, they are able to smell out trouble that no human or man-made
device can. Today’s military dogs are valued as important members of
their military units and even have their own retirement ceremonies,
awards and medals and memorial services.
Over the years the military, police and rescue have developed a variety
of training methods for K9 units. Their training is tailored to meet the
demands of the job and each animal and handler carries out his or her
duties to the fullest.
vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 1⁄2 cups of
vegetables your daily goal. Try the following tips to enjoy more fruits and
vegetables every day.
1. Variety abounds when using vegetables as pizza topping. Try broccoli,
spinach, green peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and zucchini.
2. Mix up a breakfast smoothie made with low-fat milk, frozen strawberries
and a banana.
3. Make a veggie wrap with roasted vegetables and low-fat cheese rolled
in a whole-wheat tortilla.
4. Try crunchy vegetables instead of chips with your favorite low-fat salad
dressing for dipping.
5. Grill colorful vegetable kabobs packed with tomatoes, green and red
peppers, mushrooms and onions.
6. Add color to salads with baby carrots, grape tomatoes, spinach leaves
or mandarin oranges.*
7. Keep cut vegetables handy for mid-afternoon snacks, side dishes,
lunch box additions or
a quick nibble while waiting for dinner. Ready-to-eat favorites: red, green
or yellow peppers, broccoli or cauliflower florets, carrots, celery sticks,
cucumbers, snap peas or whole radishes.
8. Place colorful fruit where everyone can easily grab something for a
snack-on-the- run. Keep a bowl of fresh, just ripe whole fruit in the center
of your kitchen or dining table.
9. Get saucy with fruit. Puree apples, berries, peaches or pears in a blender
for a thick, sweet sauce on grilled or broiled seafood or poultry, or on
pancakes, French toast or waffles.
10. Stuff an omelet with vegetables. Turn any omelet into a hearty meal
with broccoli, squash, carrots, peppers, tomatoes or onions with low-fat
sharp cheddar cheese.
11. “Sandwich” in fruits and vegetables. Add pizzazz to sandwiches with
sliced pineapple, apple, peppers, cucumber and tomato as fillings.
12. Wake up to fruit. Make a habit of adding fruit to your morning oatmeal,
ready-to-eat cereal, yogurt or toaster waffle.
13. Top a baked potato with beans and salsa or broccoli and low-fat
cheese.
14. Microwave a cup of vegetable soup as a snack or with a sandwich for
lunch.
15. Add grated, shredded or chopped vegetables such as zucchini,
spinach and carrots to lasagna, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, pasta sauce
and rice dishes.
16. Make fruit your dessert: Slice a banana lengthwise and top with a
scoop of low-fat frozen yogurt. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of chopped
nuts.
17. Stock your freezer with frozen vegetables to steam or stir-fry for a
quick side dish.
18. Make your main dish a salad of dark, leafy greens and other colorful
vegetables. Add chickpeas or edamame (fresh soybeans). Top with lowfat
dressing.*
19. Fruit on the grill: Make kabobs with pineapple, peaches and banana.
Grill on low heat until fruit is hot and slightly golden.
20. Dip: Whole wheat pita wedges in hummus, baked tortilla chips in
salsa, strawberries or apple slices in low-fat yogurt, or graham crackers
in applesauce.
SMART SNACKING TIPS FOR KIDS
Snacks can play an important role in meeting kids’ nutrient needs.
Choosing foods from all of the food groups will give them the energy
they need between meals. It helps to plan and portion out snacks in
advance. Kids will usually only need 2 or 3 snacks daily, and these should
be provided at least one hour before meals. It is recommended that
snacks (and meals) be eaten in an area without distractions. So avoid
snacking while watching TV or when using other electronic devices.
Better yet, let the kids help prepare the healthy snacks.
HERE ARE A FEW EASY, TASTY (AND HEALTHY)
SNACKS TO HELP GET YOU STARTED
1. Parfait: Layer vanilla or plain low-fat yogurt with fruit and dried
cereal.
2. Toast a whole grain waffle and top with low-fat yogurt and sliced fruit
or smooth nut butter.
3. Blend low-fat milk, frozen strawberries and a banana for thirty
seconds for a delicious smoothie.
4. Sandwich cut-outs: Make a sandwich on whole grain bread. Cut out
your favorite shape
using a big cookie cutter. Eat the fun shape and the edges, too!
5. Mini-pizza: Toast a whole wheat English muffin, drizzle with pizza
sauce and sprinkle with low-fat mozzarella cheese.
6. Frozen treats: Mix equal amounts of fat-free plain or flavored yogurt
with 100% fruit juice, then pour into paper cups and freeze for a tasty
treat.
7. Quesadilla: Sprinkle shredded cheese over a corn or whole wheat
tortilla; fold in half and microwave for twenty seconds. Top with salsa.
8. Spread hummus on a tortilla. Top with a slice of turkey or ham, low-fat
cheese and lettuce. Then roll it up.
9. Stuff a whole-grain pita pocket with ricotta cheese and Granny Smith
apple slices. Add a dash of cinnamon.10. Microwave a cup of tomato or
vegetable soup and enjoy with whole grain crackers.
11. Make a mini-sandwich with tuna or egg salad on a dinner roll.
12. Microwave a small baked potato. Top with reduced-fat cheddar
cheese and salsa.
13. Spread celery sticks with smooth nut butter or low-fat cream cheese.
Top with raisins. Enjoy your “ants on a log.”
14. Dip slices of fruit or whole-grain graham crackers into low-fat vanilla
pudding or yogurt.
15. Inside-out sandwich: Spread mustard
on a slice of deli turkey. Wrap around a sesame breadstick.
16. Rocky road: Smear low-fat chocolate pudding on a whole grain
graham cracker, then top with a marshmallow.
17. Sprinkle cinnamon on unsweetened applesauce and enjoy with a
whole grain graham cracker for a taste similar to apple pie.
18. Make your own fruit roll-up by pureeing fruit and either baking it in
the oven or by using a dehydrator.
19. Bake homemade chewy granola bars using whole-grain oats and
dried fruit.
20. Whip up mini-muffins using healthy ingredients, like whole grain
flours and pureed fruit.
Blueberry Popovers
You could make this on National Blueberry Popover Day March 10th!
INGREDIENTS:
3 tablespoons butter, cut into 6 equal-sized pieces
1 cup whole milk
3 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup fresh blueberries
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, or to taste
1 lemon, halved
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Put a piece of butter
cinnamon together in a small bowl, sprinkle evenly over the batter portions.
Bake in preheated oven for 5 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees
C) and continue baking until popovers are no longer moist in the center, about 25
minutes. Dust tops of popovers with confectioners’ sugar. Squeeze lemon juice over
popovers. Serve warm.
March Gardening Tips
VEGETABLES: Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and
snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans,
cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or
higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon.
LAWN: Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this
part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When
resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety
Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm.
TREES AND SHRUBS: Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as
possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a
dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of
the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during
early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have
bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer
analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden
planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because
you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.
NATIONAL PLANT A FLOWER DAY - MARCH 12TH
Spring is just around the corner and March 12 th is the day to participate
in National Plant a Flower Day. Each year this day is dedicated to the
planting of flowers and looking forward to the spring season. Flower
gardening has become a hobby for many, young and old and National
Plant a Flower Day is a start to the new season each year.
Marigolds and Daffodils are the flowers of this month. It’s good to know
the zone you live in to determine which flowers grow as perennials (those
that grow back every year) in your area and which are considered annuals
(those that require planting every year). To find out more check out the
USDA site for Hardiness Zones.
Seeds can be started inside and set in a sunny window. When the weather
is nicer, move those plants outside. Keep the soil moist, but not wet and
follow the instructions on the seed package for proper germination of
the seedling. For those who can’t wait, get out those seed catalogs and
start planning your next flower garden.
Are you in a warmer climate? Then it’s time to get out the trowel and
the garden gloves and start turning over some new soil. Sow some new
seeds, bulbs or plants and nurture those blossoms into a brilliant blaze
for the whole neighborhood to enjoy.
Tips for Starting a Flower Garden: Start with a potted garden. If you aren’t
ready to tear up a patch of lawn, this is a good way to go. They do require
more watering, but less care overall. • Select plants that grow well in
your spot. Some plants grow well in the shade and others prefer the sun.
Others love both! • Did you know gardeners who prefer perennial gardens
have to thin their flower beds every couple of years? They also like to
share the extra bulbs and seeds with those who are new to gardening,
so if you know someone with a green thumb, get to know them better.
You might get some free plants, advice and a budding friendship! • Local
greenhouses stock plants that grow well in your area. Don’t be afraid to
ask them questions and shop there frequently. • Let’s all work together
by planting a flower and helping make the world a more beautiful place.
