MARCH 21ST IS COMMON COURTESY DAY 

Queue jumpers, finger clicking… people that board the train carriage 

before giving you the chance to get off. What about those people that 

never say “please” or people that read your messages but don’t reply for 

days? Common Courtesy Day gives people the opportunity to be more… 

well, ‘courteous’ - even if it’s just for one day out of the entire year. 

In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, courtesy is described as a: behavior 

marked by polished manners or respect for others: courteous behavior b: 

a courteous and respectful act or expression. Common courtesy can be as 

simple as saying “please” and “thank you” when asking for and receiving a 

service, gift or assistance. Kindness and courtesy do go a long way and are 

noticed by others even if you do not realize it. Letting someone in front 

of you in traffic is easy. Hold open a door for someone or give a person a 

hand with his groceries. Give up your seat on the bus to someone who 

might need it. Introduce yourself to the new employee or kid at school 

and take the time to introduce her to the rest of the crew. These are just a 

few examples of small things that make a difference to someone else. They 

are momentary deeds of being courteous. The aim of Common Courtesy 

Day is to practice common courtesy for one day and encourage others 

to do the same. According to the Collins English dictionary, Courtesy is 

defined as: politeness, respect and consideration for others. 

How to Be More Courteous 

If common courtesy is not a part of your daily routine, then this is the day 

to start implementing courtesy into your life. Try it; not only will the other 

person appreciate it, but you will feel good about it also. Practicing daily 

kindness will not only make others feel better and reflect positively upon 

yourself, it can make you feel good too. Here are some examples of how 

you can celebrate Common Courtesy Day: 

• Greet people with “good morning” and “good afternoon.” 

• Give up your seat for someone who may need it more. 

• When you drink the last of the milk in the fridge, replace it. 

• Hold the door. 

• Place the cardboard tube from the toilet paper holder in the bin and 

replace with fresh roll. 

• Refill the printer with paper when it runs out. 

• Pay someone a compliment. 

• When you ‘borrow’ a pen, actually give it back. 

• Contact someone you’ve not spoken to in a while. 

• Complain less. 

• Instead of getting mad, appreciate that the person that just barked at 

you is probably just having a bad day. 

• Feed the homeless. 

• Do a spot of cleaning at home or at work. 

• Leave someone a ‘thank you’ note. 

• Respect the environment - don’t litter and maybe consider walking to 

work instead of driving. 

The founder of Common Courtesy Day is a complete mystery, but we 

can’t argue that this is an amazing opportunity for us to implement more 

courtesy into our daily lives.

KATY ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES CALL 

FOR A MAY 2021 SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION 

The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved to hold a general election in 

May 2021 for a three-year term in Positions 6 and 7. 

• Early Voting by Personal Appearance: Mon, April 19 to Tues, April 27, 2021 

• Election Day: Saturday, May 1, 2021 

Currently, Position 6 is being held by Susan Gesoff and Position 7 is held 

by Dawn Champagne. State law requires a candidate for trustee of an 

independent school district to be a qualified voter by the time mentioned 

in Election Code Section 141.001. Katy ISD trustees are the governing body 

of the school district and are the main advising group that oversees and 

shapes policies. Individuals serving as Board members are not employees 

of Katy ISD, yet they dedicate countless hours to lead an A+ school district. 

KATY VIRTUAL SCHOOL REGISTRATION OPEN 

For students, virtual classes are an excellent way to acquire graduation credits 

and/or expand their learning opportunities. Last year, over 4,000 students 

utilized the Katy Virtual School (KVS) program offered by the Katy Independent 

School District. KVS launched in 2013 with a primary goal of expanding the 

learning opportunities for students by offering choice and flexibility for rigorous 

online courses developed and taught by Katy ISD teachers. KVS has begun 

online registration for Summer 2021, Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters. 

“KVS provides online learning that offers a flexible, online experience, which 

helps students achieve their educational goals,” said Susan Richards, Katy ISD 

Instructional Technology e-Learning Manager. “The virtual model of e-learning 

is in high demand and delivers quality instruction to Katy ISD students, outside 

of normal school hours, to support student graduation plans. KVS is different 

from the current Katy Virtual Academy (KVA), which is the online learning 

model implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” added Richards. 

KVS will offer a wide range of courses from Creative Writing, AP Art 

History, English III, World Geography, Economics, Psychology and more. 

There are over 30 Advanced Placement (AP), Katy Advanced Program 

(KAP) and academic level courses available to students with additional 

opportunities being added each year. The cost per course is $200 per 

semester. KVS is an approved College Board online provider for Advanced 

Placement (AP) courses and by the NCAA for student initial eligibility.

KATY ISD SEVEN LAKES HS CHEER WINS STATE 

It’s been a great school year of state championship wins for Katy Independent School District, this time the trophy goes to the Seven Lakes High School 

(SLHS) Cheerleaders, who won the 2021 Conference 6A-D1 UIL State Spirit Championship, which took place in Fort Worth, Texas. Out of 43 6A-D1 

schools, the Spartans took home the gold and the coveted title of being named “CHAMPIONS.” “This is the second time the Spartan Cheer Team has 

medaled at state,” said SLHS Cheer Coach Amy Weaston. “In 2019, the Spartans took home third place. We are so proud to bring home another state 

title to our supporting Spartan Nation,” added Weaston.

Easy Banana Cream Pie 

You could make this on National Banana Cream Pie Day March 2nd! 

INGREDIENTS: 

3 cups heavy cream 

1/2 cup crushed ice 

1 (3.5 ounce) package instant banana pudding mix 

1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix 

3 bananas, sliced 

1 (9 inch) pie shell, baked 

1 cup heavy cream 

DIRECTIONS: 

Using an electric mixer, whip 3 cups heavy cream on low speed until 

it starts to thicken. Add crushed ice and continue to whip another 4 

minutes. Increase speed and add vanilla and banana pudding mixes, 

whipping until pudding mixes are blended fully with the cream and the 

mixture thickens. Increase speed to high and beat until mixture is stiff. 

Line the bottom and half way up the sides of pie crust with banana 

slices. Cover bananas with half of the banana cream mixture and top 

completely with banana slices. Top with the remaining banana cream 

mixture. In a small bowl, whip 1 cup cream until stiff peaks form. Using a 

pastry bag, pipe cream onto top of pie, covering completely. Refrigerate 

1 hour before serving.

Blueberry Popovers 

You could make this on National Blueberry Popover Day March 10th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

3 tablespoons butter, cut into 6 equal-sized pieces 

1 cup whole milk 

3 eggs, beaten 

1/4 cup white sugar 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

1 cup all-purpose flour 

1/2 cup fresh blueberries 

1 tablespoon white sugar 

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 

1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, or to taste 

1 lemon, halved 

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Put a piece of butter 

into each of 6 large muffin cups. Put muffin tin in preheated oven until butter melts, 

about 5 minutes. Set aside. 

Beat milk, eggs, 1/4 cup sugar and vanilla together in a large bowl. Whisk flour into 

the milk mixture until you have a batter. Divide batter between muffin cups. Drop 

even amounts of blueberries into each batter portion. Stir 1 tablespoon sugar and 

cinnamon together in a small bowl, sprinkle evenly over the batter portions. 

Bake in preheated oven for 5 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees 

C) and continue baking until popovers are no longer moist in the center, about 25 

minutes. Dust tops of popovers with confectioners’ sugar. Squeeze lemon juice over 

popovers. Serve warm.

VEGETABLES: Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and 

snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, 

cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or 

higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. 

LAWN: Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this 

part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When 

resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety 

Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. 

TREES AND SHRUBS: Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as 

possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a 

dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of 

the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during 

early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have 

bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer 

analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden 

planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because 

you give them food just before the spring growing season starts. 

NATIONAL PLANT A FLOWER DAY - MARCH 12TH 

Spring is just around the corner and March 12 th is the day to participate 

in National Plant a Flower Day. Each year this day is dedicated to the 

planting of flowers and looking forward to the spring season. Flower 

gardening has become a hobby for many, young and old and National 

Plant a Flower Day is a start to the new season each year. 

Marigolds and Daffodils are the flowers of this month. It’s good to know 

the zone you live in to determine which flowers grow as perennials (those 

that grow back every year) in your area and which are considered annuals 

(those that require planting every year). To find out more check out the 

USDA site for Hardiness Zones. 

Seeds can be started inside and set in a sunny window. When the weather 

is nicer, move those plants outside. Keep the soil moist, but not wet and 

follow the instructions on the seed package for proper germination of 

the seedling. For those who can’t wait, get out those seed catalogs and 

start planning your next flower garden. 

Are you in a warmer climate? Then it’s time to get out the trowel and 

the garden gloves and start turning over some new soil. Sow some new 

seeds, bulbs or plants and nurture those blossoms into a brilliant blaze 

for the whole neighborhood to enjoy. 

Tips for Starting a Flower Garden: Start with a potted garden. If you aren’t 

ready to tear up a patch of lawn, this is a good way to go. They do require 

more watering, but less care overall. • Select plants that grow well in 

your spot. Some plants grow well in the shade and others prefer the sun. 

Others love both! • Did you know gardeners who prefer perennial gardens 

have to thin their flower beds every couple of years? They also like to 

share the extra bulbs and seeds with those who are new to gardening, 

so if you know someone with a green thumb, get to know them better. 

You might get some free plants, advice and a budding friendship! • Local 

greenhouses stock plants that grow well in your area. Don’t be afraid to 

ask them questions and shop there frequently. • Let’s all work together 

by planting a flower and helping make the world a more beautiful place.
