WINTER ON AMERICA’S NORTH COAST is a season filled with magic — an abundance of lake-effect snow, splendid scenery, and classic winter fun including downhill skiing and snowboarding, cross country skiing, dog sledding, sleigh rides, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The new Winter Recreation Center at Superior National Golf Course is the place to set off for a ride by dog sled or horse-drawn sleigh, to glide along the gently rolling cross country ski trails, or to explore the River, Canyon and Mountain “Nines” on snowshoes. Equipment rentals are available. <strong>Lutsen</strong> Mountains Ski Area is a ski and snowboard paradise, where “Midwest Feels Like Out West” with 90 runs and 1,000-foot vertical over four mountains. Not only does Lake Superior provide a dramatic backdrop, it provides dramatic snowfall, too, for skiing that starts in November and runs into April. CLASSIC WINTER RECREATION DOWNHILL SKIING & SNOWBOARDING <strong>Lutsen</strong> Mountains offers 90 runs for downhill skiing and snowboarding, plus a new terrain park. Complete equipment rentals are available, as are group and private lessons. XC SKI TRAILS & RENTALS The North Shore Ski Trail system offers more than 200K of groomed, tracked trails. Some of the favorite trails are Sugarbush, Massie-Hall Loops, and Deeryard. Rent skis at the Winter Recreation Center, Sawtooth Outfitters or <strong>Lutsen</strong> Mountains. Some area resorts provide complimentary XC ski gear and <strong>guide</strong>d tours to their guests. Winter For cross-country skiers, the North Shore Ski Trails feature trails along frozen rivers and through pristine forests. Covering 196 kilometers, the trail is easily accessed at several entry points, including trailheads at most resorts. The entire North Shore Ski Trail system is mapped and marked; maps are for sale at the <strong>Lutsen</strong>-<strong>Tofte</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> Information Center and area resorts. Snowshoers can explore the many nearby State Parks or go backcountry into the nearby Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Virtually every hiking trail along the North Shore becomes a snowshoe trail once it is covered with a decent layer of snow. Local snowmobile trails connect to the 150 mile North Shore State Trail, which runs from Duluth to Grand Marais. Artery trails from the North Shore State Trail offer access to several wild, scenic trails throughout <strong>north</strong>ern Minnesota and into Canada. SNOWSHOEING Minnesota State Parks and Forests are available for snowshoeing. Some area resorts offer complimentary snowshoes to their guests.
