Number of S-Court Justices drop to 18, as
Rhodes--Vivour retires today
By Ikechukwu
Nnochiri
A BUJA—JUSTICE
Olabode Rhodes-
Vivour will, on
Monday, bow out of
the Supreme Court
bench, having clocked
the 70 years statutory
retirement age.
Justice Rhodes-
Vivour is the second
most senior jurist of
the court, directly
below the Chief
Justice of Nigeria,
CJN, Justice Tanko
Muhammad.
His retirement has
Delta community protests over Odogwu title
....Urges government to intervene
O GWASHI-UKU—
THE people of
Azungwu Community
of Ogwashi-Uku,
Aniocha South local
government area in
Delta State, have
protested <strong>against</strong> the
chieftaincy title of the
'Odogwu of Ogwashi-
Uku, confered on
Gabriel Ohai Amboi,
alleging that he was not
the right person to hold
the title.
The protest, which was
carried out by the men,
women, youths, elders,
including the chief
priest of the community,
was, however, peaceful,
as the protesters
appealed to the state
government to intervene
in the matter, so as not
to allow it to degenerate
into crisis in their area.
The protesters, who
carried placards with
various inscriptions,
chanted war songs
while matching round
the town. the 'Onu
Odafe' of Ogwashi-Uku,
Nweke Odafe, who
spoke on behalf of the
Odafe, alleged that
Gabriel Ohai Amboi was
imposed on the people
of Azungwu by the
traditional ruler of
Ogwashi-Uku without
due consultation with
the people of the
community.
While saying that the
people of Azungwu
were peace loving, he
called for the removal of
SALISU
I formerly known and
addressed as Yunusa Salisu,
now wish to be known and
addressed as Yunusa Salisu
Abubakar. All former
documents remain valid.
General public should take
note.
depleted the number
of justices of the apex
court to 18.
Number of justices of
the
court
unprecedentally rose
to 20 in November
2020, after President
Muhammadu Buhari
okayed the elevation of
eight justices at a go.
Their appointment
had sparked hope that
the apex court would
for the first time in
history, attain the full
complement of 21
justices.
However, with the
death of Justice
Gabriel Ohai as the
Odogwu of Ogwashi-
Uku. He insisted that
the Odogwu title belong
the people of Azungwu,
saying that they were in
a better position to know
the rightful person to
occupy the position as
custom and tradition
demands.
Speaking in the same
vein, Comrade Tony
Nwaduba, Chief Iloba
Obata, Comrade
Emmanuel Nwani and
Sylvester Ngwuta on
March 7, about 23
days to his retirement,
and the retirement of
Justice Rhodes-Vivour
on Monday, only 18
Justice are left on the
apex court bench.
Remarkably, five
other justices of the
court, including the
CJN, will equally exit
the bench within the
next 33 months.
Whereas Mary Odili,
who will become the
second most senior
justice of the court
upon the retirement of
Justice Rhodes-
many other youths, said
they would continue to
ensure that Azungwu
remains as one family as
it was from inception.
Maintaining that
nobody could
disorganise the unity
the people of the area
were enjoying, they said
:@vanguardnews
Vivour, will retire on
May 12, 2022, Justice
Ejembi Eko will also
bow out of active
judicial service just 11
days later, being May
23, 2022.
The CJN himself will
retire on December 31,
2023, which is about
seven months after
President Buhari’s
second term in office had
elapsed.
Meanwhile, Vanguard
learned that the Supreme
Court will on Monday,
hold a special valedictory
session in honour of
Justice Rhodes-Vivour.
Azungwu land was not
for sale.
They alleged that the
chieftaincy imposition
and forceful land
administration in
Azungwu Community
had in no small measure
negatively impacted on
the peaceful co- existence
of the community.
