The lossand grief remains the same.Losing a loved one, a life partnerspecifically, also results not onlyin grief but loneliness.In my experience, one of thebest ways to help a grievingperson is to give them a chanceto talk. It helps most people tojust be heard when they areholding a lot of emotional pain.It is difficult to talk about thepain, and we need to feelconnected to the person we aretalking to and to feelemotionally safe, knowing theycare and want to help.However, it can be difficultto just listen to someone expressemotional pain.We sometimes say “I don’tknow what to say,” but we don’thave to say much, just listen.Most people have a naturalcaregiving instinct that makes uswant to soothe the person andtake their pain away.However, when someone isgrieving the loss of someoneclose, we really cannot take thepain away.We can only be willing tolisten and share this very humans o r r ow.A lot of comfort is nonverbal,but this requires some kind ofphysical interaction.This is what is much moredifficult in the Covid era.However, with video chatsit’s not impossible.We need to clear our mindsand hearts of anger, guilt andanxiety to the best of our abilityand, from there, try to becreative in ways to be presentwith our bereaved friends andfamily as much as possible andin whatever ways we can.Some tips for those sufferingthe loss of a loved one:● Know your feelings are valid.Grief is messy and a naturalresponse to loss.There are no right or wrongways to experience grief.There are commonalities,but our response to loss isdifferent for every person.In general, grief beginsacutely with intense emotions,preoccupying thoughts andphysical reactions andb e h av i o u r s .Over time, as we adapt tothe loss by accepting its realityand restoring our well-being,grief is integrated and finds aplace in our life.● Understand that sudden lossis shocking and difficult tocomprehend.● Use the tenets of the serenityprayer. You need to accept whatyou cannot change, this meansaccepting the death but also thepresence of the pandemic andits consequences.● Watch out for thoughts thatcan derail your healing process.If they take too much spacein your mind, acknowledge thisand seek help.● Don’t let guilt overwhelmyou.
