Somehuman ‘right’!”A more humorouscomment came fromLARRY PIP FREEMAN,who said: “My right tobraai day, yep.”ROBIN COLLETT felthuman rights had beentwisted. “Here in SouthAfrica there seems tobe no human rights, it’sme, selfish me rights. Ithought they called itubuntu in NelsonMandela’s day, but thatseems to have fadedout. People aregetting abused all thetime and have tosimply live with it,” hesaid.TEMBANI MGQUBAsaid he believed that“this is a distortedhistory by ANC goonsto call a painful andsombre day, theSharpville and LangaMassacre Day”,arevolutionary HumanRights Day.Herotel responds to concernsCompany 'not' after monopoly,while reader raises questionsWALKING THE TALKROB KNOWLESAfter receipt of a letterfrom a reader, NeilHuman, questioning theroll-out of fibre cables for fastinternet access, TotT contactedHerotel, the companyresponsible for installing thefibre network around town.“Did anyone ask theresidents of Port Alfred if theywanted trenches, poles or HeroFi b r e ?“ Human asked.“Under whose authority isthe orange army turning ourlittle town into their own privateconstruction site?“When did the municipalitycall for public participation orcomment in making thisdecision on our behalf?”In response, Herotelexplained that in every suburbthere was an allocated spacebetween homes, typically at theback of a property, that wasreserved for critical servicessuch as sewage, power andtelecommunications.This space was alwaysreserved on the property deedsand no municipal approval wasrequired to build there.To build the fibre network atthe back of properties, Herotelneeds the agreement of thehomeowner of the property forreasonable access.Once agreed, Herotel thendeploys its fibre network onpoles between properties.According to Herotel’swebsite: “Fibre technologydelivers the internet through afixed fibre-optic cable at speedsof up to 100Mbps.“Using small glass fibres totransmit data using pulses oflight, it’s one of the fastest andmost reliable ways to transferlarge amounts of data to yourhome or business.”Human said of this: “Whatthey are saying is technicallycorrect, but it should be notedthat a connection is only as fastas its slowest link.“What is the source of theHerotel connection coming intoPort Alfred? If the source of theconnection is not also fibreoptic cable, the quality of theconnection will depend on thequality of that source.“A connection that is notsource-to-end fibre optic shouldnot be promoted as a ‘fibre’connection.“Let us not get so excited bythe mere mention of the wordfibre that we throw all caution tothe wind and fail to do our dued i l i g e n c e .”Regarding choice in internetservice providers, Humanasked: “Herotel provides thecables, the trenches, the polesand the routers that provides‘Hero Fibre’ connections and,by default, have a closedmonopoly as the sole internetservice provider (ISP) on theinfrastructure that they own.“At first glance, this mayeven sound reasonable, butwhat if you are unhappy withtheir service at any point?Making A Change Project, founded by Patrick Nteyi, centre, lived up to its name when it donated 57 shirts to needy children atImpumeleloIsentabeni Creche situated at Ndlovini. Thanking his sponsors, Nteyi said: ‘I would like to take this time andopportunity to pay my gratitude and respect to all who donated and made this possible’“Can you simply change to anew service provider?“Will another serviceprovider be allowed to removeHerotel’s poles or Herotel’scables from your property?“Will competing serviceproviders even deploy the realunderground fibre in an areawhere the municipality hasgranted Herotel an undisputedmonopoly?“While we are obsessingabout poles and trenches,Herotel is actively busyclaiming land, trenches androads, possibly to the exclusionof all other future competitors.“If this is the case, Port Alfredresidents may in effect lose theright to choose their own ISP.”Herotel answered this in anumber of ways.“We do not build, ‘wh e r e ve rwe want’, but only in a veryspecific mid-block design andonly if the majority of residentssupports it.“Our networks designs arefrequently adapted throughoutthe construction process tofacilitate within reason localconditions and requests.”Herotel cannot, or wouldnot, prohibit any competitornetwork from building acompeting fibre network.“Having many ISPs doesn’tcreate a better service. Theservice is fully provided by thenetwork operator. The ISP onlygives you an invoice.“With Herotel, and becausewe have a direct access model,we are 100% responsible foryour full service which meansthere is no ambiguity about who❝Herotel cannot, orwould not, prohibitany competitornetwork frombuilding a competingfibre network. Havingmany ISPs doesn’tcreate a betterservice. The service isfully provided by thenetwork operatorH e ro t e lis responsible. That is why weknow there is no value in havingmany ISPs sell our services onour network.“None the less, we are nottrying to claim exclusivity.“Any other FNO [fibrenetwork operator] may alsobuild a network and provideoptions to the community.”Human concluded: “Po r tAlfred residents deserve to beconsulted before their right tochoose is sold so cheaply to thefirst available offer.“It is easy for a single voiceto be ignored, but we are morethan a single voice, we are PortAlfred and perhaps it is time thatour mayor, municipal managerand town planner hear from us.”Herotel responded: “Herotelwould like to invite people to tryour services and judge forthemselves.
