GE Energy in Africa.
GE established its first foreign office in Africa
in 1898. More than a century later, our African
roots have grown deep and put GE in a unique
position to provide wide-reaching solutions and
establish long-lasting partnerships. GE Energy
Solving customer challenges
Providing reliable onsite power
with gas engines
Energy supply shortages have led a number
of South Africa’s factories to install advanced
natural gas- and steel gas-fueled GE gas
engine systems to generate reliable onsite
power. At a copper foundry owned by Thos
Begbie & Company, four J620 natural gasfired
GE gas engines will help the company
become nearly self-sufficient, making
production more stable.
Purifying water at one of world’s
largest coal power plants
South Africa’s leading power provider, Eskom,
will use GE’s innovative water and wastewater
technology for the Kusile Power Plant, which
is expected to be one of the world’s largest coalfired
power plants when it is fully operational.
GE’s water equipment will filter approximately
250 million liters of water per day at the power
plant, significantly reducing operating costs
and increasing efficiency.
Heavy duty gas turbines set
availability record in Cote d’Ivoire
High power reliability and fuel flexibility are
why Compagnie Ivoirienne de Production
d’Electricite (CIPREL) chose GE’s 6B and 9E gas
turbines for its 210 MW Vridi II power plant,
one of the first independent power projects
built in the region. Three 6B and two 9E
turbines allow the plant to run on gas and
heavy fuel, enabling more than 95 percent
availability—the highest level of any power
plant in Cote d’Ivoire.
Powering 2010 Africa World Cup
Soccer in Angola
When Luanda, Angola’s capital, was scheduled
to host the 2010 Africa World Cup soccer
championship, the government of Angola
needed a way to provide power to the event
and alleviate power shortages. GE and Electro
Montagem, an EPC partner in the region,
installed a TM2500 aeroderivative mobile power
pack—literally, a power plant on wheels. The
unit not only ensured that the World Cup events
had adequate power, but also will continue
operating in Angola.
Responsive service capabilities help
Nigeria LNG get back online
During startup following a blackout at the
Bonny Island natural gas liquefaction plant
in Nigeria, one of GE’s 7EA heavy duty gas
turbines suffered damage that caused
production to halt on one compressor train.
GE sprang into action to fix the wreckage.
Its plant engineers, who are onsite around the
clock, made temporary repairs that brought
the unit back online and minimized downtime
and production losses.
GE helps reduce flare gas
in Nigeria
When a gas plant in Ebocha, Nigeria, was
experiencing approximately 55 million
standard cubic feet per day of gas flared, GE
provided a compression island solution, where
reciprocating compressor units compressed
natural gas and an aeroderivative gas turbine
produced electricity utilizing the same gas
that would have otherwise been flared. This
solution helped provide additional power and
gas captured for feedstock, keeping the plant
self-sustained and significantly reducing its
CO 2 emissions.
GE Energy depends on the infrastructure, skills and institutions of stable,
prosperous societies and healthy environments. To succeed as a global
business, we need to be a part of building these societies where we operate.
We do this through the products and services we create, the way we
work with employees, customers, suppliers and investors, the public
policies we advocate and the philanthropic partnerships we support.
Working with governments
Because GE believes that Africa must develop its own solutions,
it has expanded its continental presence through partnerships with
governments and private enterprises that deliver African-inspired
answers. GE combines its technological capabilities and financial
strength with local knowledge to capitalize on opportunities and
foster sustained growth.
Investing in human capital
Beyond business, GE is committed to addressing Africa’s needs,
including employment, training and youth development. Growing and
developing the skill base of our employees is not something new to GE.
We are an early leader in developing leaders for the future. Training
and skills development for employees is a core part of each individual’s
growth in the company. GE’s Oil and Gas University and Power Systems
Engineering Course also provide customers with state-of-the-art training
in key areas of energy management.
Being responsible citizens
GE’s approach to corporate citizenship is a full-time commitment with
the same goals, strategies and accountabilities that drive any other
part of our business. GE applies its long-standing spirit of innovation
and unique set of capabilities to tough challenges in our communities.
The GE citizenship framework—“make money, make it ethically and
make a difference”—enables the company to contribute to, and create
value for society in ways aligned with its business strategy.
Ecomagination
Ecomagination is a business strategy to help meet customers’ demands
for more energy-efficient products and to drive reliable growth for
GE. It reflects GE’s commitment to invest in innovative solutions to
environmental challenges that deliver valuable products and services
to customers while generating profitable growth for the company.
In the fifth full year after the launch of ecomagination in May 2005, GE
has made significant progress on each of our five main commitments.
• Grew revenues from ecomagination products by 6 percent, to $18 billion
• Invested $1.5 billion in cleaner technologies, achieving our 2010 goal
one year ahead of schedule
• Reduced greenhouse gas emissions from operations by approximately
22 percent from the 2004 baseline
• Reduced water use by 30 percent from the 2006 baseline
• Kept the public informed through this report, the ecomagination
website and public engagements
