FOREWORDBEFORE entering upon the study of the hook-upsdescribed in the pages of this book, the readerwould do well to acquaint himself somewhat withthe various instruments used in the reception of radiotelegraph and telephone messages.The first instrument that the layman will, in all probability,lay his hands on is some sort of a tuning coil. Thisis nothing more or less than many turns of wire woundin an even layer on an insulating core and equipped withsome method of varying the number of active turns. Thismethod may be either a slider or a number of leadsbrought off from the coil to an equal number of switchpoints placed in an arc of a circle and so arranged that aswitch -arm will make contact with one or another ofthem. The purpose of this coil is to boost the naturalwavelength of the aerial to that sent out by the transmittingstation. Other instruments that perform thesame purpose are Honeycomb and Spider -web coils, variometers,vario -couplers and loose -couplers. The variometeris a very finely adjustable inductance coil. Itsaction will be found described in any up-to-date radio textbook. The author does not consider this book to be theplace for full discussions of the action of the various instrumentsso it will not be dwelt upon.If two coils of wire are placed near one another, andan alternating current run through one, a current will beinduced in the other. On this principle the action of thevariometer, varíe -coupler and loose -coupler depend. In8
