Welcome... 

Here follows a departure from the usual format of 

this column, and a departure from the usual desire to 

focus on uplifting and positive community musings. 

There are plenty of other sources from which you can 

find reports on all that is wrong with the world, so the 

ethos here has always been – and always will be – to 

create a platform for all that is (largely) good in our 

corner of the globe. But… “Our lives begin to end 

the day we become silent about things that matter.” 

(Dr Martin Luther King Jr.) So, as with most rules, we can 

make an exception, and what comes next speaks for itself. One 

key ingredient of our format remains, however: the following 

quotes were all made by local residents. 

“I was followed whilst walking my dogs the other night, and 

thank God the guys were still in at Gezi Park who helped me 

home. It was not a nice experience at all!” (Woman) 

“Lost count of the times I was scared walking home from the 

station… I’ve been jeered at, followed by someone who crossed 

the road every time I did, and often ended up walking down 

the middle of Redbridge Lane West to avoid dark drives with my 

keys threaded through my fingers.” (Woman) 

“I was cat-called on the High Street.” (Woman) 

“To be honest, there is almost no place in the world I would feel 

safe walking alone at nighttime. That’s something women come 

to terms with very early on.” (Woman) 

As a father of daughters, I will teach my girls 

how to stay safe. I hope those with sons 

will educate their boys on how to 

behave so there are fewer 

lessons to learn.

‘We are truly devastated’: demolition of 

Victorian house on Sylvan Road approved 

A 150-year-old Victorian 

house in Snaresbrook is 

set to be demolished and 

replaced with nine modern 

flats following approval 

by Redbridge Council’s 

Planning Committee 

last month. “We are all 

truly devastated by this 

outcome,” said Kirsty 

Thomas, who was part 

of a network of almost 

200 local and non-local 

residents who objected 

to the planning application for 8 Sylvan Road.

for the Friends of Wanstead Parklands, which

Plans for new mural as Wanstead’s 

Festival of Nightingales is postponed 

The new café is to be located behind 

the toilet block along Woodbine 

Place’s boundary with the Green 

Plans are in place to deliver more community 

events on Christchurch Green this summer, 

with a new café kiosk to act as a focal point. 

“Vision will work with local groups and 

residents to host a range of activities in the 

park, like children’s story time, poetry readings 

and potentially small film screenings,” said a 

spokesperson for Redbridge Council. The new 

café – to be located along Woodbine Place’s 

boundary with the Green – is set to open by 

early summer and will have an alcohol licence, 

allowing the venue to complement events.

postponed. “The fundraiser and organising 

for the festival have had to be put back 

as Redbridge Council are not granting 

permission for community road closures this 

year. In the meantime – as a prelude to a 

festival in 2022 – we are hoping to organise 

the painting of a mural on Nightingale 

Lane, some community-led improvements 

to Nightingale Green and some other safe 

activities that don’t involve road closures,” said

A Wanstead nursing home is raising money for 

Little Lives UK – a charity providing support 

to disabled and disadvantaged children – by 

selling greetings cards featuring designs by 

local residents. The one-off collection of cards 

will be sold throughout April; £5 for a pack of 

10 cards of varying designs. “The community 

has really got behind us with our Little Lives 

campaign. We’ve received pictures from 

local schoolchildren and residents alike,” said

The expansion of Wanstead Leisure Centre – to 

provide a 25m swimming pool and new dance 

studio – is on track to be completed in late 

2022. “The project is in the pre-construction 

design phase, with the intention of work 

starting this June,” said a Redbridge Council 

spokesperson. The work will include the 

demolition of the 1960s teaching block at the 

front of the adjoining Wanstead High School 

site. A modernised three-storey structure will 

be built in its place, alongside other upgrades 

to the school and leisure centre. 

Churchill Room at Wanstead Library 

upgraded ahead of reopening 

The Churchill Room at Wanstead Library 

has been refurbished ahead of the venue’s 

planned reopening this month. “The work 

has included repainting, floor refurbishment, 

upgraded refreshment facilities, improved 

stage lighting, new furniture and the 

installation of WiFi… The hall will be following 

the roadmap, opening for children’s activities 

from 12 April, socially distanced classes from 

17 May and, hopefully, a full reopening on 

21 June,” said a spokesperson for the Vision

Redbridge Museum is inviting Wanstead 

residents to submit their photos, videos, 

artwork and stories about life during the 

coronavirus pandemic. “We want to know 

about your daily walks, working or schooling 

from home, and the ways your community has 

come together to support one another. Your 

stories will help to document the impact of 

the pandemic on our borough and will form 

part of the collections at Redbridge Museum 

and Heritage Centre,” said a spokesperson.

In 2008, a group of dowsers worked in 

Wanstead Park to try and find the location 

of a long-lost Roman structure. The group’s 

findings were never written up, but during 

lockdown, local resident Janet Cornish began 

analysing the results. “The documentation 

has been brought out of storage and is being 

organised with GPS accuracy… Dowsing is 

an ancient art, but has gained recognition as 

a supplement to archaeological techniques,” 

said Janet, a former computer science lecturer, 

who hopes to publish a report later in the year.

Art 

Art Group Wanstead has launched a nature-themed challenge for 

local residents. Group founder Donna Mizzi introduces the project and

Most of us will continue to spend 

much time at home this year, but 

are you getting rather tired of 

seeing the same old street features while 

taking exercise around Wanstead? If so, this 

may capture your imagination… 

Much as NHS rainbows added colour to 

our lives, the artwork and creativity of local 

residents – adults, teens and children – can 

add interest and vibrancy to our area. And art 

spotting can be an uplifting visual surprise for 

passers-by. 

For that reason, Art Group Wanstead (AGW) – 

which has organised Art Trail Wanstead for a 

decade – this year urges residents to use their 

creativity and show their own work in front 

windows and gardens this spring and summer. 

‘The year that nature took centre stage’ has 

been chosen as the theme by members of 

AGW. Local estate agent The Stow Brothers is 

supporting the project. 

Most of us have appreciated the importance 

of nature over the past 12 months, and this 

is an amazingly wide theme. Your work can 

include anything connected with the natural 

world, on earth and beyond. You might be 

inspired to include a forest scene or your 

pet in the garden. Some of you have already 

focused paintings and photography on Bruce, 

the black swan which appeared on Eagle Pond 

(overheard comment: “See how black lives 

matter!”). Of course, rainbows will also never 

go out of fashion. 

Work will only be limited by your imagination, 

and could include gardening projects or

installations, and displays on your windowsills. 

You may want to place abseiling figures 

descending from climbing jasmine or hang 

your own hand-painted summery baubles 

from trees. If you’ve always wanted to make a 

topiary feature out of your hedge, then now is 

the time to do just that. If you want to create 

extravagant birdhouses, give it a go. Want to 

try your hand at mosaic with some of your 

broken china? Crack on. 

Work can be paintings or drawings displayed 

from inside your front windows, or could 

be art in any form – including photography, 

pottery, glass or stonework and collages. One 

of our artists has suggested using outside 

fairy lights in a new creative way for summer 

evenings. Or paint and decorate jam jars to 

create lanterns. Battery nightlights are an 

inexpensive way to add safe candle effects, 

especially when children are involved. These 

Easter school holidays are a good time to 

start. On fairer days, children could even 

do chalk pavement art outside your home. 

Any materials, including recycled items 

from the home, can be used. Plastic bottles

can often be cut into a myriad of forms and 

shapes for the garden: lightly sandpaper the 

plastic and add permanent felt-tip colours 

for rainproof features. Our website will 

gradually also feature some inspiring ideas 

and tutorials. 

Naturally, some outside artwork will get 

weather-beaten in the months ahead. So 

gradually remove faded work and replace it 

with new art. As well as making you feel good, 

doing more work can even help develop skills 

that you might not have realised you possess. 

Release your inner Picasso, or simply enjoy 

adding splashes of colour. 

There are no fees or registration requirements 

for this project. We are not calling for residents 

to join the group. We will just ask you to send 

us an email to tell us which road you are 

on and when you are starting to show your 

artwork. That way, we hope to list local streets 

(not house numbers) where artwork can be 

spotted, and maybe even build up a trail. 

Anyway, first step first. Start thinking about 

what you would love to create. Then set about 

doing it. Later, if you can send us a photo of 

your artwork or installation, we will start a 

photo feature on our website. 

AGW has been established for encouragement 

and cooperation, not for critical assessments. 

This project is about enjoyable participation 

at all levels. As a voluntary, non-profit-making 

organisation, we have only one strict rule 

about our chosen set themes – and that is you 

don’t have to stick to them! They are there to 

inspire, but if you want to do something else 

entirely, go ahead.

Wellness in Wanstead 

Having organised a popular Wellness Week in Wanstead six months 

ago, Elsa Arnold is now launching Wellness Festival 2021, a month of 

online events to help us all through the final straight of lockdown 

After the success of the well-being 

week I organised in October last 

year, I am so excited to share that 

we’ve got another fabulous series of online 

events lined up to support people’s health 

and well-being through the last stretch of 

lockdown restrictions. 

From 5 April to 14 May, you can join one of 

our free online events as part of our Wellness 

Festival 2021. The aim of the festival is to 

highlight the importance of taking time out 

to care for ourselves, and promote positive 

health and well-being. 

It can be very easy to get caught up in our 

very busy and fast-paced lives, so I hope that 

even joining us for one of our events will 

help you become more aware of the benefits 

of taking time out to look after yourself. The 

festival will include events which focus on 

both mental and physical health, as well 

as giving you the opportunity to gain new 

skills and learn new things. All of the events 

are being run by individuals with small 

businesses, many of whom are local, and we 

are really pleased to be supporting them. 

There is a mixture of practical activities for all 

ages including HIIT classes, fun dance classes, 

yoga and mindfulness, singing workshops and 

lots more, as well as some insightful talks and 

training opportunities for you to get involved 

with. Among the talks and workshops we 

currently have lined up are presentations on 

managing sleep and mental health first aid 

training. 

We are also really pleased to be welcoming 

Dr Audrey Tang to our series of events, who 

will be running a session on motivation 

in May. Audrey is a very experienced 

psychologist with a lot of very insightful and 

practical advice, which I am sure many of you 

will find useful.

limited, so please make sure you sign up to 

save your spot! 

All of the events for the festival are free. 

However, if you do take part and are able to, 

we would also like to encourage you to make 

a voluntary donation towards the mental 

health charity MIND. This summer, I am 

taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge 

– when I will be attempting to climb the 

highest mountains of England, Scotland 

and Wales within 24 hours – in aid of MIND, 

who provide essential advice and support to 

anyone experiencing a mental health problem 

and campaign to improve services, raise 

awareness and promote understanding. 

Anything you can give will be gratefully 

received and appreciated, and your donation 

will go directly to MIND.

Written Response 

Shelly Berry moved to the local area shortly before the pandemic took 

hold. Here, the counsellor and novelist reflects on her observations of 

how and why people responded differently to lockdown restrictions 

I 

moved to this area at the end of 2019. By 

the time I had unpacked, celebrated my 

40th and recovered from Christmas, the 

pandemic was looming. 

It’s been a strange time to get to know a 

neighbourhood. Before lockdown hit, I was 

finding my way around the High Street and 

discovering haunts where I could write over 

a steady supply of coffee. Since last March, 

any writing outside of my new flat has been 

limited to my balcony or secluded spots 

on Leyton Flats. It’s the open spaces that 

surround my new home that I have been 

able to explore. I feel I know every tree in our 

patch of Epping Forest intimately and, whilst 

a good 30-minute walk away, Wanstead Flats 

has provided a welcome alternative for longer 

weekend rambles. 

We’ve been living through what I recognise as 

a counsellor as a collective trauma, to which 

we all respond differently. Some of us have 

responded with hypervigilance, protecting 

ourselves and our loved ones through careful 

social distancing and self-isolation. Others 

have struggled to follow guidelines that cut 

us off from our social lifelines, especially if we 

live alone with only mental health problems 

for company. 

Whilst it can be difficult to comprehend 

how others respond to COVID-19, as a 

counsellor and writer, I am constantly striving 

to understand why people behave the 

way they do. In my novel Outreach, I write 

about a young woman working with people 

with addictive behaviour, whose obsession 

with her boss some people would find 

hard to empathise with. I am now writing 

the collective stories of a group of people 

connected through one London estate, 

some of whom engage in controlling and 

violent behaviour. Whilst it might be easy to 

sensationalise the actions of my characters, I 

use my writing to explore why some people 

behave in ways that are, from the outside, 

quite alarming. In my experience, many 

addictions and other destructive behaviours 

stem from past experiences that, if left 

unchecked, affect the way we think, feel and 

act long afterwards. 

As someone who has, for 20 years, worked 

with people who are often termed 

challenging and antisocial, I have seen the 

power behind taking the time to understand 

the root of individual difficulties, rather 

than trying to ‘treat’ or punish how they 

manifest on the outside. I’ve witnessed and 

experienced the impact of feeling heard, 

and how stuck we can get if we don’t feel 

understood, something that is true for the 

characters in my writing but also for a lot of us 

living through this pandemic. I hope that, as 

we come out of lockdown, all of us who need 

that affirmation after the events of the last 12 

months experience the same compassion.

St Mary’s Church 

in 1957 by my 

husband’s uncle 

the Rev John 

Medcalf (known as 

Jack), who was the 

vicar at that time. 

The Medcalf family were regular 

worshippers at St Mary’s and they 

have a family tomb in the churchyard. 

Uncle Jack and his wife had recently 

bought their first television set and they 

could never agree on which programme to 

watch – they used to go to their next-door 

neighbour and ask them to arbitrate! 

After we had children, we went to the 

Congregational Church (now the United 

Reformed Church) on Nightingale Lane as it 

was closer to our home. The vicar at the time 

was the Reverend Alan Bound, who was very 

nice. This church has an interesting history, 

as it used to stand on the site of the current 

St Pancras Station. When the station was 

planned, the church was dismantled stone 

by stone and rebuilt in Wanstead. The church 

appeared on Songs of Praise in 1966. 

My children went to Sunday School there, 

run by Mrs Chew and her husband; they also 

joined the Cubs and Girls’ Brigade. We soon 

got to know the Forster family: Gordon Forster

Forgive me 

was the church organist and became a great 

friend of my husband, as they both loved 

organ music. Gordon actually built the organ 

console himself, and the photo here, taken in 

1970, shows him playing it. 

Eileen Forster was the captain of the Girls’ 

Brigade. She lived near me, and her daughter 

Celia used to walk my daughter there each 

week. The girls did lots of badges, and they 

also did army drilling where they had to stand 

at attention, stand at ease and learn how 

to march in step! The Girls’ Brigade held a 

reunion to celebrate its centenary a few years 

ago, and Eileen attended at the age of 87 and 

cut the celebration cake. 

The Scout troop used to put on a Gang Show 

every year with songs and comedy sketches, 

which was very popular. Our neighbour 

Dennis Anderton used to help with the Cubs 

and he sometimes took his labrador along 

with him. This dog had a strange habit of 

howling loudly in the back garden every 

Monday and Wednesday evening – we later 

discovered that he couldn’t bear the theme 

tune of Coronation Street! 

As well as Scouts and Girls’ Brigade, the church 

hall was also used for the baby clinic, jumble 

sales and dances, summer fetes and Christmas 

bazaars, and a May fair with the crowning of 

a May Queen. It was also used by the amateur 

dramatics society The Cromwell Players, which 

was also run by Mr Anderton. 

I joined the Christ Church Young Wives group 

too – it was similar to the Mothers’ Union 

but no doubt Young Wives sounded more 

modern. I made some good friends there – 

and we are still friends 50 years later. 

I’d forgotten the beauty of Communion 

Forgotten the peace of God 

which passeth all understanding 

Forgotten the Paschal Candle 

The Paten and the Chalice, 

the wafer and the wine, 

The height of the church 

where I was confirmed 

It was like coming home

Time of Waste 

We should all be helping to keep our streets and open spaces litter 

free, says Chair of the Wanstead Society Scott Wilding, who is keen for 

residents and businesses to take responsibility for their actions 

Finally, we have some light at the end 

of the tunnel with a vaccine and plan 

to get us out of lockdown. But we all 

know there is still a long way to go. In the 

period between now and (hopefully) end 

of June, our parks and open spaces will 

continue to be a refuge for families and 

friends to meet up. 

But there is an uncomfortable truth in our 

use of these parks and open spaces: litter. 

Most Monday mornings – especially after 

we’ve had a good spell of weather – the bins 

on Christchurch Green are not just full but 

overflowing. Excess waste is blown around the 

park and caught up in birds and local wildlife. 

The plastics used in some disposable food and 

drink products will never biodegrade. So, what 

can we do about it? 

We all have a responsibility 

The fact is, if we see litter or waste in a park 

or open space, one of us put it there. So, if a 

bin is completely full, just take your rubbish 

home. Do your bit. Don’t neatly balance your 

disposable coffee cup on the top of the bin 

in the hope as it’s near the bin, it’s in the bin. 

Chances are it’ll get blown away to slowly 

pollute the ground. 

More, larger bins 

Having said the above, more and bigger bins 

in our parks would be sensible, and I was 

pleased to read more bins are indeed planned 

for Christchurch Green, especially given the 

plans for a new café there – our parks are 

being used more than ever. Perhaps even 

recycling bins so we can truly up our recycling 

game, especially in a London borough with 

poor recycling rates. Ultimately though, they 

only cure a symptom, not the illness, and 

where do we stop? If a bin is full – it’s full – no 

matter how many there are.

Cutting waste at source 

COVID has seen the war on waste take a 

backward step. Think disposable masks, gloves 

and plastic coverings to protect food from 

infection. But as we exit COVID, retailers must 

continue good corporate social responsibility 

by producing less waste in food packaging. 

Gail’s and Costa both responded to a call to 

reduce waste when I spoke to them, and both 

use incentives to persuade customers to use 

fewer disposable items, although COVID has 

restricted everyone’s efforts. 

There is still a long way to go, but cutting 

waste in general is, despite COVID, an aim 

we have to sign up to if we hope to tackle 

the climate emergency. It has never been 

someone else’s responsibility to pick up after 

any of us, although there are some great 

volunteers who take part in litter picks – some 

daily – because they take pride in where we 

live. When all is said and done, and no matter 

how much someone else does, if the bin is full, 

take your rubbish home.

Wanstead Climate Action is keen to spread the ‘green jobs for all’ 

message, locally and across the country. Tina Nieman Da Costa explains 

why it’s time to make the government listen 

The long-term impact of the COVID-19 

pandemic is estimated to cost £1.9m 

in permanent jobs. Firms, though 

optimistic about the recovery of the 

post-COVID/Brexit deal era, are realistic 

about the need to cut overheads to remain 

solvent after the country’s record-breaking 

economic slump. 

Even a cursory job search in the carbon 

control and the sustainability industry shows 

an international need, and almost all starting 

positions in these areas pay more than other 

industries. A position as a senior consultant 

carbon specialist can start at £33,000 a year. 

The government should focus on creating 

more jobs and apprenticeships like these 

to match the growing requirements in 

construction, to retrofit and upgrade not only 

our homes but our railways and infrastructure, 

as well as in healthcare, teaching and 

agriculture. 

A Green New Deal UK report estimates that 

by investing £68bn of public funds, 1.2 million 

green jobs can be created over the next two 

years. The government’s response to this has 

been tentative and non-committal at best, 

and a brand-new coal mine at worst. 

The green economy has the secondary 

potential to bridge the ever-widening wealth 

gap and address the current spiderweblike 

social rifts exposed by COVID-19. It is 

a truly international industry unsullied by 

institutionalised racism and cronyism and 

can bring wealth to areas and communities 

currently being left behind. 

With China and India embracing renewable 

energy – China to the extent that it has 

saved the energy equivalent of 3.3 billion 

tonnes of oil in 2020 – how much of the ecofriendly 

pie will be left for an only backward 

compatible Britain? 

The banking sector too has seen a recent rise 

in private investment and speculation on 

ethical products. Chief executive Dr Rhian- 

Mari Thomas of the Green Finance Institute, 

the first and only of its kind, argued in an 

editorial on their website: “The UK needs 

a second green investment bank to help 

investors decarbonise.” She says the UK 

economy needs mechanisms to address 

barriers and accelerate private investment. 

“Over time, financial markets will integrate 

climate science into everyday decisionmaking, 

but climate science tells us we can’t 

afford to wait.” 

So why is the British government so reluctant? 

It’s time to make them listen. We will be 

collating data to show how these 1.2 million 

jobs could be distributed nationally and on a 

local level. Our aim is to bring the message of 

green jobs for all to every community across 

the country and build a mass of support 

behind the campaign, so politicians must act.

Defence 

A mesh fence was erected on Wanstead Flats last month to protect the 

only breeding skylark population in inner London. Gill James of the Wren 

Wildlife Group reports on efforts to save these endangered songbirds 

Many of you will be aware of the 

skylarks on Wanstead Flats and will 

have heard them singing as they 

soar into the sky, lifting everyone’s spirits 

with them. 

Skylarks are famous for their song flights, 

which are delivered by the males from very 

early spring and all through the nesting 

season. They can hover for 10 minutes or 

more, all the time delivering a beautiful 

song, a song that has inspired poets and 

composers for centuries. It’s sometimes hard 

to work out where the song is coming from 

because the singer is so high – often 300 feet 

or more. 

Wanstead Flats has the only breeding skylark 

population in inner London. Unfortunately, 

they have been unable to breed successfully 

for a number of years due to several factors, 

including some unintentional disturbance 

from humans and dogs. Other factors may be 

predation by crows, foxes and rats. 

Skylarks nest on the ground in areas of 

long grass. They (and the less conspicuous 

meadow pipits) are particularly vulnerable to 

disturbance during the nesting season, which 

runs from early March to the end of August. 

Disturbance can cause birds to abandon their 

nests, and any young birds may flee, get lost 

and end up starving to death. 

Wren Wildlife Group 

volunteers have been 

answering questions about 

skylarks and the new 

fencing on Wanstead Flats 

members of the Wren Wildlife Group have 

been around as much as possible to answer 

any questions the public may have. The 

fencing will stay up until the end of August. 

Wanstead Flats is well known amongst 

birders for the fantastic range of species to 

be found in its varied habitats, especially in 

the migration seasons in spring and autumn, 

when many birds are glad of a rest on their 

long journey home.

So, we are in danger of losing the last few of 

this critically endangered species. They have 

already disappeared from Leyton Flats. 

For this reason, temporary fencing has been 

installed around the main nesting site this 

year by the City of London to try and protect 

any that remain and hopefully allow them 

to breed. While the fencing is newly in place, 

Why not take a pair of binoculars to the Flats 

and see what you can spot? Maybe you’ll see – 

and hear – a skylark, singing its heart out as it 

soars into the sky.

As many of you may know, Robins 

is a traditional East London family 

run business. June Robins opened her 

first shop over 50 years ago in Upton 

Park, and since her passing we have all 

worked hard to keep her legacy going. 

We were all overwhelmed with the amount of beautiful birthday tributes 

and well-wishes we received for our very own queen, June Robins, and 

the love of her life, Thomas Allpress, to mark their 84th birthdays on 

25 February and 5 March respectively. We truly appreciate every kind, 

supportive and heartfelt word. And April is another significant month 

for their memories, with Thomas passing away on 1 April 2017 and June 

being laid to rest on 1 April 2019. 

As a family, we would like to pay tribute to June and Tommy, an amazing 

couple who will always be greatly missed. Tommy was the love of June’s 

life, together for over 60 years they were a team to look up to; they grew 

their family with respect, love and were encouraging, supportive parents 

to Melanie, Julie and Thomas, and all their grandchildren loved them 

very much. 

This past year has been a year for reflection and change. The NHS has 

been a saving grace, our very own angels on earth, we are thankful for 

each and every one of you. All of our six branches have worked throughout 

this pandemic, adapting and making changes in every lockdown to provide

Walks Past 

Wanstead 

Russell Kenny and Paul Hayes have devised a series of self-guided 

history walks around the Wanstead area which can be followed on 

a smartphone or from a printable guide. In the fourth of a series 

of articles championing these tours through time, we look at the 

history to be found on the edges of Wanstead Flats 

Most of the buildings around the 

edges of Wanstead Flats date 

from the late Victorian and 

Edwardian periods. The rapid development 

in this era followed the coming of the 

railways. Forest Gate Station opened in 

1840, Leytonstone Station in 1856 and 

Manor Park Station in 1873. 

The Georgian Manor House, which still 

stands in Manor Park, was built around 1810. 

The Eastern Counties Railway bought land 

near the house for their planned new line 

to Norwich in 1837. The house was sold and 

later used as an Industrial School to train 

boys in practical skills. It is now divided 

into flats. 

Manor Park Cemetery was opened in 1875 

and has some interesting Victorian graves. 

Some notable people buried there are Annie 

Chapman, the second of Jack the Ripper’s 

victims, 

Mary Orchard, 

the nanny of some 

of Queen Victoria’s 

grandchildren, including 

Alexandra who married Tsar 

Nicholas and was executed along with 

her family in the Russian revolution, and 

William Thomas Ecclestone who, when he 

died in 1905, was thought to be the secondheaviest 

man in the world. Two young heroes 

are buried there too. John Clinton was a 

10-year-old-boy who in 1894 saved another 

boy from drowning in the Thames, but was 

then himself drowned. Jack Cornwell was 

buried here in 1916, aged 16, and was awarded 

a posthumous Victoria Cross for his bravery at 

the Battle of Jutland during World War One. 

On the corner of the Flats nearest Forest Gate 

is an area that at the turn of the 20th century 

was a centre of local social life. The Monkey

Parade for courting couples to promenade, a 

bandstand (since demolished), and the Angell 

Pond, named after the engineer who built 

it, are here. Further around the Flats in 1908, 

the Model Yacht Pond (now the Jubilee Pond) 

was built. This part of the Flats has a history of 

hosting circuses and fairgrounds, and before 

that, horse fairs. 

After passing the sites of two World War Two 

prisoner of war camps, we reach the iconic 

John Walsh and Fred Wigg tower blocks, which 

look out over the Harrow Road Playing Fields. 

In Davies Lane, past the school attended by 

Jonathan Ross, we get to the Pastures, once a 

home for “Fallen Girls” and those “rescued from 

persons or houses of ill-fame”. It was founded 

in 1876 and run by Miss Agnes Cotton, a social 

reformer and philanthropist. Born locally 

into the wealthy philanthropic Cotton family, 

Miss Cotton was known as Sister Agnes 

because she often wore a veil and dressed 

in black. 

At the top of Leytonstone High Road there 

are more interesting historical houses. 

Leytonstone House, now next to Tesco, was 

built around 1800 and was originally the home 

of Sir Edward North Buxton and his family. He 

was a partner in the London brewers Truman, 

Hanbury & Company, based in Brick Lane. 

In 1868, the house and its grounds became 

another Industrial School, set up to teach 

practical skills to boys who were orphaned 

or destitute, to enable them to make a living. 

It went on to become a children’s home, a 

hospital and is now offices. 

Other interesting buildings in the area are 

the 19th-century cottages of Leytonstone 

Village, and further down the High Road, near 

The Birds pub, a row of beautiful, Grade IIlisted 

Georgian Houses. Built in the mid-18th 

century, and originally surrounded by fields, 

they are now tucked away behind a row 

of shops and hemmed in by the Victorian 

houses that sprang up with the coming of 

the railways.

GREEN GREEN GLASS 

With a background in replicating Victorian stained glass and repairing 

the white glass panels of Big Ben, local resident Tony McCarty was well 

placed to launch a lockdown enterprise repurposing used wine bottles 

So, as a bit of a lockdown project, 

I decided to see if I could create 

drinking glasses using our waste wine 

bottles, drawing on 30 years’ experience of 

crafting stained glass. After three months 

of research and practice – and many broken 

bottles – I began to make progress. 

It wasn’t quite as easy to make something 

useful and beautiful from an unwanted wine 

bottle as YouTube suggested, but I persisted, 

and thanks to my patient and understanding 

wife, I finally perfected a reliable method and 

created a set of six amazing drinking glasses 

with super smooth edges. The transformation 

from a resource doomed for the recycling bin 

to a uniquely beautiful drinking glass really 

hit home. 

Our friends and family loved them and were 

only too willing to collect and donate their 

empties, which I then repurposed into more 

drinking glasses. Before long, I made my first 

sale. Amazing! New ideas for other products, 

such as table votives to self-watering planters, 

and glass dining table accessories followed, 

and I was ready to explore new ideas and test 

the market further. 

Next stop was a visit to Bombetta, an excellent 

Snaresbrook-based Italian restaurant. Armed 

with a selection of samples, I met with Ben 

and Jo. They really liked the samples and 

particularly appreciated the sustainability 

concept. I agreed to take the restaurant’s 

waste bottles and created 100 wine glasses for 

their tables as well as designing table tea light 

holders, vases and olive bowls, all reflecting 

the restaurant’s style. The idea also proved 

to be a big hit with the diners. Five months 

later, they ordered 300 more products for 

their stunning, new industrial-style art gallery 

restaurant in Walthamstow, Arte e Pasta. 

I am also pleased to have teamed up with Cera 

London, a small Wanstead-based chandler. 

Working together, we have tested and 

developed a new range of vessels made from 

salvaged Prosecco bottles for their scented 

candle range (available to buy online or from 

Daisy Florist on Wanstead High Street). When 

the candle is exhausted, you can take your 

jars back to Daisy’s for refilling. How’s that for 

sustainability? 

In the meantime, if you would like me to 

repurpose your waste bottles into beautiful 

tableware or as a thoughtful, sustainable 

unique gift for a friend or loved one, do let me 

know what you are interested in. 

It’s a great creative way for you to get involved 

in reducing your carbon footprint. But I warn 

you, you will never look at an empty wine 

bottle in the same way again!

Crime of the Times 

In the second of two articles, local dog trainers Colin Spence and 

Sarah McLeod-Cerezo discuss how you can reduce the chance of your dog 

being stolen, an increasing problem yet to become a specific offence 

There has been a huge upsurge in 

the demand for puppies and dogs 

due to more people being at home 

and seeking companionship during the 

pandemic. And dogs are being stolen to 

meet this demand. Here are some things 

you can do to try and reduce the chances of 

having your dog stolen when out on a walk. 

From a dog behavioural perspective, dogs 

don’t need to be walked daily so long as they 

have sufficient mental enrichment; and total 

rest days are to be encouraged. So, if you’re 

anxious, don’t feel pressured to take them out 

every day. And you don’t necessarily need to 

ask those with dogs to go for a walk with you; 

in accordance with current restrictions, groups 

of up to six – or any size from two households 

– can meet outdoors. Start and end your walk 

at your home with your companions having 

ensured you and your dog are back safely. 

Ensure the person taking the dog out 

is responsible enough to cope with any 

eventuality that may occur, such as being 

approached by a stranger and having the 

confidence to say no to any unwanted 

attention. If you have a small dog, pick them 

up if you are not comfortable, or if the dog 

is larger, get close to them. If leaving a gated 

park, leave it on your own rather than with 

someone walking behind you. Take a step 

back and let the person pass. Continue to be 

visually observant on your way home. 

We often think of the messaging about not 

leaving dogs in cars is due to hot weather, 

but it is equally appropriate advice relating to 

dog theft, not to mention never leaving a dog 

unattended outside a shop or public venue. 

If you have been approached or have any 

suspicions, call the police immediately, 

reporting the date, time, location, outfit and 

description of the suspicious person. Also give 

this information to your local dog warden. It is 

not creating a fuss, it is informing the correct 

people, so suitable measures can be taken. If it 

is safe to do so and you will still have complete 

control of your dog, take a photograph of the 

car or person concerned. Never put yourself in 

harm’s way. 

If your dog is taken, having called the police, 

follow the same advice as if your dog were 

lost. Contact the organisation Dog Lost 

(doglost.co.uk), put posters up locally, inform 

the local vets, contact the microchip company 

and post on social media. 

If you do not feel confident your dog will 

return to you immediately when called, 

research safe, secure, privately hired local 

enclosed dog fields in which to let your dog 

off the lead, and seek out a training service to 

help you build your dog’s skills in these areas.

and more importantly, about non-refundable deposits, which can 

sometimes be based on unfair small print 

Our personal diaries are blank. We 

have all had to cancel planned 

holidays and events, and we know 

that, in some cases, the cancellation and 

refund process works more smoothly than 

in others. 

One of the main concern consumers face 

is whether it is legal for a business to keep 

a non-refundable deposit in the event of a 

cancelled event due to COVID-19. 

A deposit is part of the total cost of 

something, or an advance payment paid 

at the time of booking. Businesses will 

sometimes insist that it’s non-refundable if 

you cancel, and even draft it into its contract 

and terms and conditions. A common 

example of this is when booking a venue for 

an event, such as a wedding. The business’s 

contract and terms and conditions will very 

often refer to all payments made in respect 

of the event as ‘non-refundable and nontransferable’. 

Can a deposit be non-refundable? 

Just because something is written in a 

contract does not mean it is always legally 

binding. The reason for this is because 

businesses ordinarily cannot rely on unfair 

terms. 

Only in some circumstances can a business 

keep your deposit or advance payments. 

If you cancel the contract, the business is 

generally only entitled to keep or receive an 

amount sufficient to cover actual losses that 

directly result from your cancellation. This will 

generally include costs already incurred by the 

business or loss of profit. 

When can a deposit be kept? 

Generally, the business has no entitlement to 

keep any amount that can be saved by finding 

another customer, or cancelling any other 

suppliers they have employed. That would 

likely constitute an unfair contract term. For 

example, if you booked a holiday which then 

sells out and the company finds another 

customer to take your place, it is likely the only 

amount it can legitimately withhold from your 

deposit will be administrative costs. However, 

if you cancel at unreasonably short notice and 

the business cannot find another customer, 

you could expect the business to keep most, if 

not all, of your deposit.

Wanstead have compiled 

a list of 10 species at risk 

of local extinction. In the 

second of a series of articles 

looking at each species in turn, 

Alex Deverill explains how to help 

smooth newts thrive in your garden 

Anyone with a 

pond will tell you that 

newts are welcome visitors 

– engaging little creatures with a handy 

appetite for slugs. The best time to spot 

them is March to October. Smooth newts 

are generally brown in colour with a yellow 

or orange belly with small black spots. 

The males develop an impressive wavy 

crest along their backs in the breeding 

season, making them look like miniature 

dinosaurs. In fact, on land, their skin can 

take on a velvety appearance and they can 

be mistaken for lizards. 

Smooth newts spend part of the year in water 

and part on land. Adults head to ponds from 

the start of the breeding season in February 

through to around June. Spawn is laid as 

individual eggs wrapped in pondweed. Newt 

larvae breathe through external feathery gills

which sprout from behind the head. It takes 

about 10 weeks for them to metamorphose 

into air-breathing juveniles. In late summer, 

both juvenile newts and adults leave the 

water. They can often be found sheltering in 

damp soil beneath logs and rocks. In winter, 

they stay hidden underground, among tree 

roots and in old walls. 

Smooth newts are protected in the UK under 

the Wildlife and Countryside Act. They’re at 

risk because of the loss of the habitats where 

they live, particularly the removal of ponds, 

and the fragmentation of green spaces as 

more land is developed. In Wanstead, small 

garden ponds help support the species, but if 

these ponds are filled in or stocked with fish, 

or if gardens are paved over, newt populations 

will suffer. Here’s how you can help : 

• Newts need two types of habitat – a pond 

where they can breed and a surrounding 

land area containing slugs, snails and 

insects for them to eat, along with cover 

to hide from predators. There’s a great 

guide by The Wildlife Trusts on how to 

build a wildlife pond (wnstd.com/pond). 

To create places in your garden where 

newts can hang out, consider a long grass 

area or a pile of old wood or leaves in a 

shady location. 

• Newts need insects to eat, so help 

mini-beasts thrive in your garden. That 

means having as many plants as you 

can. Ground-dwelling insects generally 

benefit from patches of dense vegetation 

where they can hide away. Large areas of 

paving for drives and patios are disastrous 

for city invertebrates and wildlife more 

generally. 

• Never use slug pellets, pesticides or weed 

killers in your garden. Instead, aim to attract 

lots of different wildlife to keep things in 

balance, using biological pest control if 

necessary.

Advice for 

buying property on a 

floodplain… 

The UK’s climate is becoming 

warmer and wetter with every 

passing year and flooding 

is seemingly a constant on news 

channels these days. Awful images 

of homeowners up to their knees 

in flood water surrounded by their 

sodden possessions are commonplace, but they 

remain no less shocking. 

Floodplains fall under different categories here in the 

UK, so a lot will depend upon which zone the property 

in question sits. Some homeowners may happily live on 

a floodplain all their lives without issue, while others 

won’t be so fortunate. 

As the law currently states that risk of flooding is not 

required in surveys, the burden of responsibility lies 

with the buyer. It is, therefore, prudent to run your 

own checks prior to purchase, especially if the home in 

question sits near a significant stretch of water. In short, 

properties sitting on floodplains should be closely 

scrutinized, but definitely not rejected out of hand.
