WASTE REMOVAL
Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the
night before the scheduled pick-up day. After pick-up, all garbage cans
should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of
garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please
make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on nontrash
days. On a side note we should be putting all trash in bags and not
directly in bins as this creates a problem for everyone. Governors Place is
our home and we like to keep it nice. If you spot trash in the area, please
pick it up and to ensure our beautiful community stays as such.
ACC FORMS
Approval from the Architectural Control Committee is required prior to
making any modifications to the exterior of your property. This includes
but is not limited to installation of trampolines, playsets, storage sheds,
room additions, patio covers, repainting your home, trim or front door
even if using the same color. An Exterior Modification Request Form can
be submitted electronically at www.crest-management.com by clicking
on Exterior Modification Request Form on the homepage. Please note you
do not need to log in to complete the application. Once you select your
project type, it will notify of items required to complete your application.
If you prefer a paper application, please contact Crest Management at
281-579-0761 and it can be mailed to you.
SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY:
Report any and all suspicious activity to S.E.A.L. Security - 281-749-1300
as well as the Sheriff’s office.
STREET PARKING
To help avoid trash not being picked up, please do not park your vehicles
in the street on Trash days (Tuesday and Friday). When multiple vehicles
are parked in the street, the truck is unable to get through. Thank you in
advance for your assistance with this matter.
CRIME REPORTING
Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves
and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything
suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc.
SAFETY AND SECURITY TIPS FROM
S.E.A.L. SECURITY SOLUTIONS
Preparation
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. If you do leave your purse
in the front of the vehicle, don’t leave your phone in your purse. (Since
phones are now so easily traceable, the thieves will most likely destroy
and/or discard it right away. That’s one more hassle you don’t need.)
• Keep spare keys to your home or vehicle with a trusted neighbor,
relative, at work, etc.
• Take photos or make a photocopy of all your credit/debit cards, driver’s
license, etc. (front and back), that you normally keep in your purse or
wallet and keep those copies someplace safe, such as at home. That
way, if they are lost or stolen, you will more easily be able to inform the
companies and authorities.
Prevention: Be aware of all those around you. MAKE EYE CONTACT so
potential thieves know they have been seen.
Governor’s Place Hotline 281-749-1300
DOGGIE DON’TS
Most of our dog owners are responsible, using a leash and picking up
after your pets. We thank you!
HOWEVER - We have received reports of dog owners allowing their dogs
to defecate and urinate in yards. This is especially a problem in hightraffic
areas near park entrances. Be aware that it is not just your dog.
Once a yard has been “used,” other dogs want to do so as well. A resident
should not have to pick up after even one dog, much less ten. In addition,
runners and walkers in our parks don’t enjoy dodging excrement. Please
carry a bag and pick up after your pet.
Remember also, that even the sweetest dog may seem intimidating to
some people. Respect their rights and comply with leash laws.
STREET LIGHT MAINTENANCE
To report a streetlight that is not working, call Reliant Energy at 713-207-
2222. You need to report both the number on the base of the pole and
the street address.
PARKING LAWS WILL BE ENFORCED
As many residents have noticed, cars parking in the wrong direction
on the side of the road has become an increasing problem throughout
the community. The officers that patrol the neighborhood have been
giving warnings for this, but will begin issuing tickets. Please utilize
your driveway and garage and when parking on the street is necessary,
please park in the same direction as traffic. Additional parking problems
have occurred at the tennis and clubhouse parking lots. As a result, the
Board has adopted a Common Area Parking and Tow Policy. The Policy
has been filed in the official public records with the Harris County Clerk
and is available by visiting www.crest-management.com, clicking on
Communities and selecting Governors Place. Towing will be enforced.
DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER
If you plan on making a change to your home/yard, please fill out a
Request for Home Improvement - Governor’s Place form. Please view
the form at our website and download the form to submit to Crest
Management.
• Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property.
• Trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of
the street.
• Remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway
to park cars.
• Store trash cans out of street view.
• Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of
pine needles and leaves.
• We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric
toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many near
misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson” the hard
way by being hit by a car.
RECREATIONAL VEHICLES
Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the
governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year
vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call
Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will have
your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days
grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to
open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your
vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when
you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational
vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.
CAR-CLEANING TIPS
12 WAYS TO GIVE YOUR WHEELS A FRESH START
1. Clean up spills quickly, before they have a chance so soak in and set.
2. When vacuuming, use the duster-brush attachment to get in all the
nooks and crannies of the dashboard, center console and door panels.
If you don’t have an attachment, use a paintbrush to dislodge the dust.
3. Use the crevice tool to reach between seats and the console to dislodge
food crumbs and other hidden goodies. Remember to move the seats to
their extreme front and back positions.
4. Don’t forget to vacuum the seams on seats, where dirt accumulates
and breaks down the material.
5. For upholstery, use a mild solution (a couple of drops per gallon) of
dishwashing detergent and water to clean seats. Dip a clean towel into
the solution and rub gently. For leather upholstery, a leather cleaner is
recommended, although the homemade cleaner can be used. After
cleaning leather, rub in a conditioner. Use the treatment every six months.
6. If you have tinted windows, it’s better to use an alcohol-based cleaner
than an ammonia-based glass cleaner, because the ammonia can break
down the tint.
7. A good way to get streak-free windows is to use a micro-fiber towel.
8. Don’t forget to clean the rearview mirrors and side windows.
9. Clean the instrument panel with a clean micro-fiber cloth.
10. Keep a towel under your seat to quickly clean up spills on fabric
upholstery. Instead of rubbing the spill, try pressing down with the
towel to soak it up. For more stubborn stains, try using the mild cleaning
solution mentioned above.
11. If you do use a spray stain remover, be sure you go back with a clean
damp towel to remove any residual cleaner, which acts as a magnet for
dirt when left on the seat.
12. Combat red stains with the following method: Fill a spray bottle to
the top with 90 percent water and 10 percent ammonia. Spray onto the
red stain, wetting well. Place a clean damp towel over the stain and press
with a hot iron. This will transfer some of the dye into the towel. Repeat
spraying and ironing and most of the red stain should come out.
10 TIPS FOR A CLEANER REFRIGERATOR
1. Create a homemade all-purpose cleaner by combining the following in a
gallon of hot water: 1 cup clear ammonia, ½-cup vinegar and ¼-cup baking
soda. Pour into a spray bottle or use from a bowl with a sponge. This norinse
formula is a degreaser that prevents mold and mildew. Wipe down the
entire refrigerator with this solution, including the drawers and shelves.
2. To prevent grease and odor buildup on top of the refrigerator after
you’ve cleaned it, just buff some paste wax into the surface.
3. Use toothpaste to remove tough stains. It contains a gentle abrasive
and has a pleasant odor.
4. To get those dust bunnies out from under the refrigerator, remove the
grill and run a yardstick covered with a pair of pantyhose underneath.
Also check the pan of water under the unit, since it can hold unpleasantsmelling
water.
5. To combat household odors, fill a clean old sock with activated charcoal
from an aquarium store, tie a knot in the top and place it in the back of
the refrigerator. This will last a month or two, depending on the size of
your refrigerator and how heavily you use it.
6. For a faster fix for odors, sprinkle vanilla extract on some cotton balls,
place in a shallow dish and put in the refrigerator. Orange extract also
works.
7. Eliminate lingering odors in your vegetable bins by putting a crumpled
piece of a brown paper grocery bag inside and leaving it for 48 hours. The
paper will absorb the odor.
8. Check for adequate tightness of the insulating seam around the door
by placing a lighted flashlight inside the refrigerator and closing the door.
Turn off the lights in the room (this should be done at night) and see if
any light escapes from the seams. This will help you pinpoint any leaks.
9. If you don’t keep your refrigerator full, fill a large bottle (at least a gallon)
with water and leave it in the refrigerator. It helps keep the refrigerator
cool and running efficiently.
10. Keep your refrigerator at 37 degrees. Source: www.hgtv.com
CONTINUED CAMPUS PHASE 1 SAFETY PROTOCOLS
Katy ISD Campus Phase 1 Safety Protocols remain in effect to ensure the continued
mitigation and deterrence of the potential spread of COVID-19. The District anticipates
releasing Phase 2 protocols when state, local and the Texas Education Agency (TEA)
provide updated guidance allowing for de-escalation of virus mitigation protocols. Katy
ISD will provide updates as additional information becomes available. Please check the
KATY ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES CALL
FOR A MAY 2021 SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION
The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved to hold a general election in
May 2021 for a three-year term in Positions 6 and 7.
• Early Voting by Personal Appearance: Mon, April 19 to Tues, April 27, 2021
• Election Day: Saturday, May 1, 2021
Currently, Position 6 is being held by Susan Gesoff and Position 7 is held
by Dawn Champagne. State law requires a candidate for trustee of an
independent school district to be a qualified voter by the time mentioned
in Election Code Section 141.001. Katy ISD trustees are the governing body
of the school district and are the main advising group that oversees and
shapes policies. Individuals serving as Board members are not employees
of Katy ISD, yet they dedicate countless hours to lead an A+ school district.
KATY VIRTUAL SCHOOL REGISTRATION OPEN
For students, virtual classes are an excellent way to acquire graduation credits
and/or expand their learning opportunities. Last year, over 4,000 students
utilized the Katy Virtual School (KVS) program offered by the Katy Independent
School District. KVS launched in 2013 with a primary goal of expanding the
learning opportunities for students by offering choice and flexibility for rigorous
online courses developed and taught by Katy ISD teachers. KVS has begun
online registration for Summer 2021, Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters.
“KVS provides online learning that offers a flexible, online experience, which
helps students achieve their educational goals,” said Susan Richards, Katy ISD
Instructional Technology e-Learning Manager. “The virtual model of e-learning
is in high demand and delivers quality instruction to Katy ISD students, outside
of normal school hours, to support student graduation plans. KVS is different
from the current Katy Virtual Academy (KVA), which is the online learning
model implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” added Richards.
KVS will offer a wide range of courses from Creative Writing, AP Art
History, English III, World Geography, Economics, Psychology and more.
There are over 30 Advanced Placement (AP), Katy Advanced Program
(KAP) and academic level courses available to students with additional
opportunities being added each year. The cost per course is $200 per
semester. KVS is an approved College Board online provider for Advanced
Placement (AP) courses and by the NCAA for student initial eligibility.
For more information, students can talk with their campus counselor for
additional information, email KVS at katyvirtualschool@katyisd.org or
visit the Katy ISD Virtual School website.
Please note: Katy Virtual School and Katy Virtual Academy are two
separate programs. Katy Virtual School is a supplemental program to
help entering or present high school students take courses in advance.
EIGHTEEN KATY ISD SCHOOLS EARN
TEXAS HONOR ROLL DISTINCTION
Katy Independent School District is focused on closing the achievement
gap and helping all its students reach academic success. To recognize
those efforts, 18 Katy ISD schools now proudly display the distinction of
being a Texas Honor Roll School by the Educational Results Partnership
(ERP).
After an extensive analysis of student data of every public school in
Texas, these campuses demonstrated clear leadership in motivating
and achieving academic success for its students at their grade-level
and beyond. Sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education
Excellence (CBEE), the ERP Honor Roll is the only school recognition
program in the state that uses student achievement outcome data,
making it a valuable resource for all schools to identify successful peers
and learn about best practices that improve student success.
The 2019-20 Texas Honor Roll includes:
Elementary: Alexander, Holland, Kilpatrick, Pattison, Randolph, Shafer,
Stanley, Wilson,
Wolman
Junior High: Beckendorff, Katy, Memorial Parkway, McMeans, Seven
Lakes, Tays, WoodCreek
High School: Tompkins, Seven Lakes
For high schools, the ERP Texas Honor Roll recognition includes measures
of college readiness. This year, the program recognized 943 higherperforming
schools across the state.
DONATUTORS
Donatutors is a nonprofit tutoring organization that donates 100% of
our proceeds to charity. All of our tutors are straight-A students at Seven
Lakes High school and we offer a multitude of courses like creative
writing, computer science, biology, public speaking, ICTW writing and
many different math courses too. We charge $20 per class, but the first
one is free! For more information, check out donatutors.com or email
us at donatutors@gmail.com. What’s even cooler is that this summer
SUPPORT GROUP FOR JOB HUNTERS
Searching for a job can be difficult and stressful, but doing it in the middle
of a pandemic can be even worse. Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) will
host an online Job-Search Support Group on Tuesday, April 27 th at 2 PM.
This program will be live-streamed via Webex; it will NOT be in person. In
CRIME STOPPERS OF HOUSTON
ANNUAL HOUSTON’S HEROES
AWARDS LUNCHEON ON MAY 4TH
Celebrating its 40 years of service to Houston and Texas, Crime Stoppers
of Houston will host its annual Houston’s Heroes Awards Luncheon on
Tuesday, May 4, 2021 from 11:30 AM-1 PM at the Royal Sonesta Houston
Hotel to honor outstanding individuals and organizations who have
given exemplary service to make Houston a safer place to live, work,
learn and play. Due to the public health threat from Covid-19 and the
current health and safety protocols, we will offer both an in-person
event with limited seating as well as virtual access for sponsors and
supporters to participate from home. While Crime Stoppers had to
cancel this event last Spring due to the pandemic, the organization is
unable to do so this year and reminds the community that it relies on
this event for funding. Eight distinguished awards will be awarded at
this annual fundraiser that raises funds to keep our communities safe.
For the second year, Crime Stoppers of Houston will reveal the winner
of the Dave Ward Media Excellence Award. This unique award will honor
an entity or individual who has exhibited media excellence and will be
selected by Houston’s Media Icon Dave Ward himself, along with support
from a small committee of his constituents at Crime Stoppers of Houston.
For 40 years, Crime Stoppers of Houston has focused on solving crime
through the famed Tip Line, 713-222-TIPS and reducing overall criminal
activity by preventing it through educational community programming.
The non-profit, which fundraises year-round will directly benefit from
the luncheon’s proceeds to help further advance the Crime Stoppers’
mission. Attending the 2021 Houston’s Heroes Awards Luncheon is one
easy way to support Crime Stoppers and public safety. The event is open
to participation by all. Individual tickets start at $175 and sponsorship
opportunities are available.
Please note: Due to Covid-19, the event will be a hybrid event and we
are urging the community to still get involved. To purchase tickets, visit
https://crime-stoppers.org/get-involved/2021CSLuncheon. For more
information about the event, contact Paige Hollek at phollek@crimestoppers.org
A “SUPER” TRICK FOR GARDEN SUCCESS
BY SANDRA GRAY, FORT BEND COUNTY MASTER GARDENER
You might think master gardeners spend countless hours making our
gardens the envy of all that behold them and, to be honest, some master
gardeners do. However, one of the great things about being a master
gardener is learning tricks that make us more successful in our gardens
with less work. Who wouldn’t like that? Let me tell you about one of my
favorite tricks.
One of the best things you can do to ensure garden success is to choose
the right plant for the right place. Sounds easy but there are so many
amazing plants to choose! The solution to this problem is a wonderful
Texas A&M AgriLife program called Texas Superstars®. These plants have
been tested by university horticulturists and master gardens and proven
to be winners throughout a variety of locations in Texas. What do I mean
by “winner?” Hardier, more pest and disease resistant, more flowers,
bigger flowers, more fruit, tastier fruit and a “wow” factor is what I mean.
In other words, these plants are more likely to thrive in your garden and
dazzle you at the same time. Also, to be designated a Texas Superstar, a
plant must be easy to propagate so the plants can be mass-produced for
consumers at reasonable prices.
Since the program’s inception more than 20 years ago, many types of
plants have been recognized as Texas Superstars®, including annuals,
perennials, trees, roses, shrubs, vegetables, fruits, vines and more.
The criteria for choosing a Texas Superstar® are simple: beauty; special
characteristics such as larger blooms, more fruit or attractiveness to
fauna; outstanding Texas performance; pest and disease resistance; easily
mass-producible for reasonable pricing and, attractive in the container
for ready sales.
An example of a Texas Superstar® is Duranta, also known as Golden
Dew Drop. This deciduous shrub has masses of blue or purple flowers
from spring through fall and golden berries in late fall. It attracts bees,
butterflies, hummingbirds and other birds. If you are still not sold, it’s
drought resistant, too!
Another example of a Texas Superstar® is the Dwarf Cherry Surprise
Tomato, which produces a bounty of cherry tomatoes that are considered
four times as sweet as other cherry tomatoes. It’s resistant to most
common tomato diseases and is highly recommended for home and
school gardens.
New Texas Superstars® are added from time to time as they are tested and
approved, the newest being an evergreen vine called the Yellow Butterfly
Vine. It has delicate yellow flowers but its name comes from the salmoncolored
seed pods that resemble butterflies. It is drought-tolerant and
thrives in hot sunny locations.
The value of choosing Texas Superstars is more than just their beauty or
your increased probability of success. If you choose plants that will thrive
in your garden, you save money that might have been wasted on plants
that die before their time. You also save time and energy in nurturing
plants that will be successful. Just remember to plant and care for them
according to directions.
If you are interested in more information about these plants, visit http://
texassuperstar.com. This site includes detailed plant descriptions,
growing tips and where plants can be purchased. You can also look for
plants with Texas Superstar® labels.
For answers to your specific gardening questions, contact the Fort Bend
Master Gardener Hotline at https://fbmg.org/contact. The Texas Nursery
and Landscape Association and Texas Department of Agriculture (“Go
Texan” Program) partner with Texas A&M faculty, Agrilife Research and
Agrilife Extension to spread the word about Texas Superstars®!
April Gardening Tips
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great
many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy
‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants,
roaches, termites, etc…” Spend a little more on bagged material and save
lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top
of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing
pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and ground covers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” -
18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is
18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow
up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab.
The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings,
growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows
on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray
eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist
the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also
kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the
winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop
brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and
weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn
aeration” b) fertilization” c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not
water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger
and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
WHEN IS EARTH DAY?
This observance always falls on April 22 nd . On Earth Day, enjoy the tonic
of fresh air, contact with the soil and companionship with nature! Walk
through the woods in search of emerging wildflowers and green moss.
Go outside, no matter what the weather!
Ever wondered how Earth Day started? This observance arose from an
interest in gathering national support for environmental issues. In 1970,
San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord
Nelson separately asked Americans to join in a grassroots demonstration.
McConnell chose the spring equinox (March 21, 1970) and Nelson chose
April 22 nd . Millions of people participated and today Earth Day continues
to be widely celebrated with events on both dates.
The most common practice of celebration is to plant new trees for Earth
Day. Other Earth Day activities and ideas are: Plant wildflowers, Go
native! Plants thrive when they’re natural to your area, bring nature into
the garden with plants that attract butterflies, try an organic vegetable
garden and conserve water.
