Not our responsibility:

A part of a caption and from a post I made on

the 19th of July 2020. This perfectly sums up

my feelings and opinions and I felt like I

needed to be in the zine aswell becouse I

think it's important.

I remember how I felt when I wrote this, angry.

Angry with the state of the world, angry with

the men around me, angry at how so many

other non-men are treated by society. The

night I wrote this was the night my whole

outlook on life and feminism changed.

Why we shouldn't idolize or

admire 90s riotgrrrl:

90s riotgrrrl is a

feminist punk

movement

popularized in

the US in areas

such as

Olyimpia,

Washington.

The most

popular bands

from this time are 'Bikini kill' and

'Bratmobile'. From what I've gathered

riotgrrrl was started as a way for grrrls to let

out thier frustration with the patriarchy

and what it's like to be a woman/girl.

26

7

And while this sounds like an amazing

concept you cannot deny the fact that 90s

riotgrrrl was extremely exclusive of anyone

that wasn't a white, cis-genderd, middle

class woman. This is problematic for

obvious reasons, How could it be

considered a 'feminist punk movement' if it

only catered to a small percentage of people

that still had a signi cant amount of

privilege?

Now, I can't really say whether this was

intentional or not but non-the-less it was

extremely harmful.

If all girls riotgrrrls, why was there such a

big exclusion of people that didn't t this

speci c mold? It's kind of ironic.

27

7

This is only one example of lack of

intersectionality that we see through out

mainstream/white feminist movements

past and present. (more on intersectionality

later)

As you would of guessed the absence of

diversity lead to intolerance for example,

band's such as Le Tigre playing at the

'Michigan Womyn's Music Festival' which

by the way inforced a "womyn born

womyn" policy. If you don't see the

problem with that please re-evaluate your

morals.

28

7

Is there a solution?

Yes…

1. Boost BIPOC and Trans people to

the front of the movement.

2. Acknowledge what happened in

the past and CALL IT OUT

especially if you are white, cis-het

and middle-class.

3. Stop glorifying 90s riotgrrrl, it's

fucked.

Solidarity with protesters in

Colombia <3

The original photograph was taken by

someone named Luisa Gonzalez/Reuters at a

protest in Bogotá, Columbia.

TW: THIS PIECE HAS MENTIONS OF

POLICE BRUTALITY

31

7

This singular photo represents

so much resilience, strength

and rebellion. That, to me, is

the embodiment of feminism.

32

7

Context:

Protests broke out in Bogotá during a

weekend around September 14th due police

brutality and the death of a man named

Javier Ordóñez.

Ordóñez was arrested after suposedly

'breaking cerfew' and then later murdered

by police after repeatedly being tazed by

them, As supposedly shown in the video

that had been circulating around the time,

Ordóñez was seen crying out "Please, no

more."

Here are words by Mafe Carrascal on the

subject:

This is just some of what I have to say on

GBV and femicide.

I don't feel as if I can't t everything I

want about this topic into just a few

page's, it needs to be it's own issue.

That's why issue #004 is going to be f ully

dedicated to gathering information,

supplying resources, guring out ways to

help and potentially interviews with

anti-gbv orginizers [TBA]

For now though here is a list of anti-gbv

collectives and orgs that do amazing

work, check them out on instagram or go

to thier websites!

There is also a highlight on my Instagram

page f ull of resources (hotlines, shelters,

ect)

Here are some words by Tania Chavez

on femicide:

Titled "Femicide-Must end"

46

7

47

7

Let's start o by de ning

intersectional feminism:

This is going to be a very brief

explanation along with a collection of

my thoughts, extra resources will be at

the back of the zine and via an external

Google doc.

Firstly, what is intersectional feminism?

In short intersectional feminism is the

understanding that all aspects of a

person's political/societal identities

combine to create a di erent experience/

di rent forms of oppression and

discrimination.

For example… a women that is cis-het,

white and middle-class will have a

48

7

signi cant amount of privilege over a

women that is black, identi es as queer

and is working class.

Acknowledging this and taking action

against the systems and constructs that

create these imbalances would be

practicing intersectional feminism.

49

7

What is wrong with

mainstream/white feminism?

White feminism is basically feminism

that only acknowledges and advocates

for the rights of white women, mostly

those that are cis-het and middle class.

The problem with this is that only

ghting for this very speci c group of

people that already has a signi cant

amount of privilege while not even

acknowledging the struggles BIPOC,

LGBTQIA+ and the working class go

through isn't feminism, it does nothing

to end the rhetoric that already

suppresses so many people and furthers

white supremacy.

50

7

Why should I practice international

feminism?

It is the only useful form of feminism, it

actually progresses the feminist

movement and takes us a couple steps

further to achieving equality.

Intersectional feminism ghts for the

rights of BIPOC, non-men, people that

are LGBTQIA+ and the working class, if

you're a white feminist and you ght

against the sexism and misogyny directed

against you and your peers you have the

potential to become a intersectional

feminist : Becoming an international

feminist will help more people than

white feminism ever had/could and does

not perpetuate oppression.

The awf ul abortion laws in poland:

The polish government has

implemented new laws that make it very

di cult for people with uteruses to get

abortions, this is not only a violation of

bodily-autonomy but shows the lack of

respect for marginalized people (as

previously shown by thier blatantly

anti-lgbtq+ laws i have talked about in

the previous issue)
