Set on the edge of a pretty fishing
village, St Mawes Castle is among the
best-preserved of Henry VIII's seaside
fortresses – and the most elaborately
decorated of them all.
The castle protected the port of Falmouth
against invasion for 450 years, alongside
its sister fortress, Pendennis. Wander
through landscaped grounds and gardens,
and discover intricate carvings on the
walls – designed to flatter the Tudor King.
One of the best ways to approach the
castle is by the St Mawes Ferry, and
be sure to explore the picture-perfect
harbour and village on your way.
