A

S satisfying as everything

about Saturday’s

game at Warrenpoint

was, our attentions

very quickly shifted to this

evening’s game with Dungannon

Swifts.

With the fixture list being how it

is, you don’t get too much time

to enjoy your victories or stew

over defeats, you simply have to

put your most recent result

behind you and make preparations

for the next match, which is

never too far away.

I don’t expect anything other

than a tough test tonight and

anybody who pays too much

attention to Dungannon’s position

in the table is wasting their

time.

They are a side capable of playing

football that can hurt any

team and, as we’ve found out

against them already this season,

you have to make sure

you’re on top of your game if you

have any chance of the result

you want.

Even our win at Stangmore Park

at the beginning f January came

courtesy of a penalty with literally

the last kick of the game,

which just shows you how tight

things can be regardless of the

points difference between any

two teams.

Dungannon have put together

some very decent performances

in the last few weeks and, if you

Anybody who pays too much attention to

their time.

4

can do that on a consistent

enough basis, results will follow

- and we need to make sure we

don’t let everything click into

place for them this evening.

In many ways, our approach to

this game won’t be too different

to last Saturday’s.

Going down to Warrenpoint was

all about attitude. It was a case

of making sure we didn’t underestimate

them and that we had

toe desire in our own lockers to

put a real shift in from the first

minute until the last. I think it’s

safe to say the players did

just that.

Michael McCrudden quite rightly

grabbed the headlines because

of his hat-trick but there

wasn’t a single player

who didn’t have a

good game on the

day.

From back to

front, we were

solid, inventive,

hard-working

and clinical - and

that’s what I’ll

be asking of the

players again

tonight. What’s

more, that’s

how they

want to perform.

The boys

deserve real

credit for

how they’ve

gone about

things since

that last

meeting with

Dungannon

four months

back and long

may our

encouraging

form continue.

M

ICHAEL McCrudden

has warned Cliftonville

against

underestimating the

challenge that will be posed by

Dungannon Swifts this evening.

The striker, who registered a hat

-trick in Saturday’s five-star

victory over Warrenpoint Town

at Milltown, says a ‘fear’ of

teams in the lower reaches of

the Danske Bank Premiership

can ensure complacency doesn’t

set in and expects the visitors to

be fired up to achieve a positive

result.

“I actually fear the teams in the

bottom half of the table more

than the big boys at the top of

the table,” he explains.

“Obviously you can get complacent.

That is something that we

have talked about a lot - for us

not to get complacent and take

every game as it comes.

“Make no bones about it, no

matter where Dungannon Swifts

are in the League table, they will

be ready to rock as will we and it

will be a tough game.”

McCrudden has had to bide his

time on the sidelines of late, with

a raft of January arrivals - most

notably Paul O’Neill and Daniel

Kearns - limiting his game time

but he was delighted to make

the most of his opportunity at

the weekend when an injury to

Paul O’Neill saw him take his

place in a starting line-up for the

first time in more than two

months.

“I’m just glad to get on the pitch

and start helping the boys,” he

says.

“It couldn’t have went any better.

I was glad to get the hattrick,

and glad to get the threepoints.

“Whenever the boys came in in

January, it was brilliant to see.

The squad has improved a lot

and it has been tough to get in

and it’s been tough to watch as

well to be honest because you

want to be out there. But I never

ever caused a fuss. I was just

biding my time and waiting my

time and got the head down and

worked hard.

“Thankfully I got the chance on

Saturday and hopefully I can give

the Manager a headache going

forward.”

The 30-year-old has an established

relationship with Paddy

McLaughlin having served as his

captain when the pair were at

Institute and, knowing the methods

the Cliftonville chief likes to

employ, McCrudden insists it

never crossed his mind to complain

about being left out of the

team for long stretches of 2021

to date.

“As a player, you always want to

play,” admits the former Derry

City frontman, who also bagged

a treble against Portadown earlier

in the season.

“There have been times when I

haven’t been getting on or I’ve

been getting 10 minutes here

and there. It does play on your

mind, but I’ve always stuck at it.

“There have been times after

matches where you feel you

could go and knock on the Manager’s

door but I’ve never done

that because it’s down to the

gaffer to pick the team.

“I know what he wants from

players, obviously with having

been with him before Cliftonville

“You could say that it’s a relationship

that has been there for

a long time and he knows what I

give as a player. It works both

ways.”

T

HOUGH the threat of

relegation from the

Danske Bank Premiership

has long been

removed thanks to the cancellation

of the Championship

season, Dungannon Swifts still

have every motivation to climb

away from bottom spot in the

table.

Alongside their own personal

pride, there is also the not inconsiderable

matter of every player

striving to ensure that they remain

part of new boss Dean

Shiels’ plans for the 2021/22

campaign.

Performances and results since

the former Northern Ireland

international replaced Kris Lindsay

- who will, of course, be

alongside Paddy McLaughlin in

the home dugout this evening -

have been every bit as inconsistent

as you might expect from

a team in the lower echelons of

the standings.

While his first game at the helm

ended in defeat, Dungannon’s

display in a narrow home reverse

at the hands of Coleraine - who,

it must be said, benefited from

arguably the most dubious penalty

award of the season when

28 16

goalkeeper Roy Carroll was bizarrely

penalised for a foul on

Curtis Allen as he punched the

ball clear of his goal - Shiels took

plenty of encouragement from

his new charges’ application

throughout.

A brace of 2-0 losses to Larne

and Linfield followed before

arguably the first real disappointment

of the Manager’s

tenure saw fellow strugglers

Portadown emerge from Shamrock

Park with a victory more

comfortable than the 1-0 scoreline

suggested.

As had been intimated by their

performance against Coleraine,

the Swifts appeared to relish the

prospect of going toe-to-toe

with some of the League’s heavy

hitters and that certainly proved

to be the case when they welcomed

Crusaders to County

Tyrone on March 23.

Goals either side of the interval

from Callum Byers and Rory

Patterson put Dungannon into a

commanding position and,

though they had to weather a

brief storm in the aftermath of

Jamie McGonigle reducing the

arrears, Shiels’ first win was an

impressive one.

Unfortunately for him and his

players, however, they were

unable to back it up when they

travelled to Ballymena a few

days later.

Shiels’ frustration upon learning

of captain Douglas Wilson’s

impending summer switch to

their opponents grabbed all the

headlines in the aftermath of a

5-1 mauling that had seen the

off-colour Swifts trailing by no

fewer than four goals at halftime.

Glenavon would register four

without reply when they visited

Stangmore last Tuesday night -

an occasion perhaps summed up

by Rory Patterson finding time to

miss a penalty and talk himself

into a red card within 13 minutes

of his introduction from the

bench.

Linfield’s visit at the weekend

brought a much improved display

out of Shiels’ side, who were

well in the game until the titlechallenging

visitors sealed the

points with a second goal in

injury-time, and he will be looking

for more of the same against

Cliftonville tonight as he goes in

search of his first away victory as

Dungannon Manager.
