2020 Exemplary Migrant Student Honoree
Yamile Beatriz Perez
“Ay hija, everyone says the same thing that they are
going away to college but in the end they end up staying. They
think it’s easy to live independently. Why don’t you stay here
where you don’t have to worry about anything?” This is what I
heard from my parents and relatives every time I talked about
going away to college. I am a Hispanic female from
Brownsville, Texas. My family consists of six children, which
makes me the third oldest of three brothers, a sister, and a twin
sister. My mother, a housewife, attended school in Brownsville,
but did not complete her 4th and last year of high school. My
father, a construction worker, attended school and finished high
school with a diploma in his hand in Tamaulipas, Mexico. For
as long as I have known, my mother has always suffered from
diabetes and I deeply admire her because even though
sometimes the illness takes a toll on her, that doesn’t stop her
from being the strong, independent woman she has become.
Growing up in a family of immigrants and being migrant has
always been tough for my parents. Because my father did not
have papers, it was very difficult for him to find a job at first,
but throughout the years, he has worked extremely hard through
blood sweat and tears and fortunately, he became a U.S. resident, through my mother, which has now made it
easier for my family.
Just as every other migrant worker out there, my parents came to the United States out of financial
need and finding a job to live a stable life along with providing the basics for their family. We've always
struggled financially, but both my parents have always given us everything they felt that we needed. This has
made me more aware of the hardships of low financial status and to treasure the items gifted to me by my
parent's hard work. Although we have two different religions in my house I have learned how to be very smart
with my decisions and my actions. Even though I have these obstacles in my life they will eventually help me
become independent during college.
My life purpose is to serve, impact, and influence the younger generation all over the world. I plan on
majoring in music technology because ever since my older sister had the dream of being an artist, all I wanted
was to help her achieve her life goal which led me to have a passion for music. I would make a difference by
reaching out to children, teenagers, and young adults through my music and helping them make their own
music so they can express their inner feelings to the world.
Without the help of scholarships, I will have to delay my college education because my older sister is
attending a college far from home and very soon my twin sister and I will also be attending college at the
same time making financial assistance a necessity. This could sometimes be difficult for my father since he
has to save money every month to be able to pay for basic necessities, rent, bills, and even send money to my
older sister. My whole family has always encouraged me to be the best that I can be as well as to always strive
for successes. By doing this I can accomplish anything that comes my way and will intend to work hard to
excel in college.

2020 Exemplary Migrant Student Honoree
Omar Sifuentes
Ms. Tanya D. Tijerina: It is a genuine pleasure and honor
for me to recommend Omar Sifuentes as a recipient for recognition
as an Exemplary Migrant Student for the Texas Migrant Interstate
Program (TMIP). As his counselor for the past two years. I have
had the honor of working with Omar to help him achieve an Associate’s
Degree from Southwest Texas Junior College and graduate
high school.
As a member of the Early College Academy, Omar has completed
rigorous college courses with exemplary grades since he started
high school. His dedication to school is commendable and speaks
highly of his desire to learn. Omar is part of the first Early College
Academy in our district and he has served as a role model for other
students who are interested in applying. While the road has not been
an easy one. Omar has demonstrated that achieving ones’ goal is
possible when you put your best effort. His quiet and determined personality has helped him mold his path to
success. Omar makes logical decisions. He researches, asks questions and inquires about his options when making
a decision. He presents valid arguments with supporting information always being respectful when stating
his point of view. Omar also listens and thinks through the information given him. Such qualities arc the tools
he needs to forge his future into the career of his choice.
When faced with the decision to apply for the Early College Academy he took a risk, made sacrifices
and set his education as a priority. Dual credit classes require that student have good attendance throughout the
semester. Omar made arrangements with his family and work in order to be present at school for his classes.
It was not always easy and Omar demonstrated his ability to solve problems with his quick thinking skills.
Such skills will make him a successful college student. College brings about challenging obstacles for students
and I know Omar will not be deterred from achieving his goals.
He migrated with his family to Clearlake, Minnesota all his life, along with his two brothers and sister.
They worked in the same factory (Thomas James Hartkopf -TJ Farms) for more than 22 years. His mother
shared a story about when she was expecting Omar, during this time they were pollinating corn for TJ Farms.
Her greatest desire at that moment was for a better life for her baby and the rest of her children. Being such a
dedicated son, Omar continue has also been a roofing helper for his father while his father worked roofing jobs
when they returned to Eagle Pass, Texas.

2020 Exemplary Migrant Student Honoree
Yaremi Berenice Perez
I am a Hispanic female from Brownsville, Texas. My family
consists of 6 kids, which makes me the fourth oldest of three
brothers and two sisters. My mother, a house wife, did not come
close to completing high school, which makes 10th grade her
highest level of education in Brownsville. My father, a construction worker, attended school and finished
high school in Tamaulipas. My mother has always suffered from diabetes and I admire her because of the
strong, independent women she has become even though she has that obstacle in her life. Growing up in a
family of immigrants and migrants has always been tough especially for my parents. It was very difficult for
my father to find a job at first, but throughout the years he has worked extremely hard and ended up making
himself a U.S. resident, through my mother, which has now made it easier for my family.
Just like every other migrant parent out there, my parents came to the United States for a better life.
We've always struggled with money, but both my parents have always given us everything we needed
whether it was for school or non-school related. My parents would always find a way to provide. Their
endurance through hardships have shaped me to be patient because not everything is going to be given to you
at that moment that it is needed. It has also made me have a good attitude and faith, even when the problems
can seem impossible to overcome. Their words of encouragement to be "better than them" and to "strive for a
future" is my motivation to keep on going.
Because I enjoy assisting other people, I integrated myself in a local church where I helped out in the
worship ministry for the past 3 years. The purpose of the worship team is to lead people into an intimate
relationship with God through worship. I've gained life skills that have helped me to be humble, patient
towards my life's purpose, and responsible for the people around me.
Coming from migrant parents, you don't look at things the same way and proud to say that I'm
thankful for being brought up the way I was, in a humble home. I intend to work hard by fulfilling what I
consented to do, even if it means unexpected sacrifices. I will ensure to excel the most of my abilities by
investing my time to be successful. With the help of my family, I will carry on to pursue a higher education
and one day return the favor for all they have done for me.

Deisy Herrera: Two people that influenced my education are
my mother and Mr. Bob Martinez one of my teachers. My
mother was able to raise five children on her own. I admire her
for her hard work and dedication to provide for us and she still
made time to be my mom and friend. Mr. Martinez believed in
me when no one else did, not even myself. He reminded me
and all his students that we had potential and that we could
accomplish whatever we set my mind to. I really needed
someone to believe that I could achieve great things in life. My
own favorite phrase by an unknown author is “Keep working
hard because the end is worth more than the beginning.”

easy to live independently. Why don’t you stay here where you
don’t have to worry about anything?” This is what I hear from
my parents and relatives every time I talk about going away to
college. My purpose in life is to serve, impact and influence the
younger generation all over the world. I plan on majoring in
music technology. I would make a difference by reaching out to
children, teenagers, and young adults through music and
helping them make their own music so they can express their
inner feeling to the world. My family has always encouraged
me to be the best that I can be and to always strive for success.

“Cuéntame tu historia” I would ask my father as curiosity got the

gathering blueberries. It was one of the toughest jobs I had ever
experienced. We didn’t have the option to choose...becoming
migrant workers was a necessity in order to survive and have a
better life.” Their endurance through hardships have shaped me to
be patient because not everything is going to be given to you a the

Major: Psychology
Migrant Background
Location: Indian & Ohio - Detasseling Corn
Julian Garza-Teacher: Jasmin is not only an intelligent
individual, but also a role model for her classmates due to her work
ethic and dedication. While these are incredible attributes for a
student to have, what most impresses me about her is her
personality, kindness, sense of drive, and willingness to help others.
We’ve all heard that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t
work hard, but what if both of these qualities are placed within one
individual. This is Jasmin. She is a student that has such potent
intellectual ability, yet doesn’t rely solely on that in order to achieve
success. She works hard for her achievements. It is crystal clear in
all of her work. The assignments she turns in are not only evidence
of intelligence, but also of hard work that took time and dedication.
It’s also obvious that all work turned in is the absolute best work
that she can produce. Her work ethic and intellect, as impressive as
they were, didn’t surprise me. What did surprise me was her
willingness to help her classmates in absolutely anything they
needed further guidance on whether that was an assignment or a
personal issue.

Naomy L. Torres: The individuals that influenced my
education the most are my parents, they are my role models.
Especially my mother, she taught me many valuable lessons
and has always been there for me. I have learned the
importance of earning an education and how an education can
bring about great things. An advantage of being a migrant
student was the migrant program, it provided information on
many career opportunities through presentations and field trips.
They helped me to be positive and kept me informed on
educational opportunities. My favorite quote from Gary Keller,
“Life is a question and how we live is our answer”.

Anahi Treviño: Several people impacted my education. First
and foremost, my parents, they both migrated from Mexico to
the United States in search of a better future. They want a better
and easier life for me and that means me earning a college
degree, I want to make them proud of me. Second person that
impacted by education indirectly was my friend Ronni, I met
her in my biology class. She was supportive and encouraged me
to stay focused on my ultimate goal, graduation and college.
Migrant work is not easy both my parents worked hard, long
days and I grew up quickly and learned to be independent,
responsible and self-sufficient. My goal is to graduate from

me to continue my education to earn a college degree. A very
important reward/advantage of being a migrant student is the
life and work experiences. Through my work experiences as a
migrant worker, I learned about dedication, responsibility,
which helped develop my strong work ethic. My favorite quote

Susana DasNeves
2020-2021 INTERSTATE COORDINATION PARTNER
Susana DasNeves is a higher education professional with over 20
years of experience providing student services as a bilingual counselor,
academic advisor, and administrator at the university and community college
levels. Currently, Susana is the Director of Illinois Migrant Education
Services at Northern Illinois University, funded through a contract with the
Illinois State Board of Education with Title I Part C funds for migratory
students. She believes that collaborative partnerships are the key to
successfully serving migratory students and other underserved populations.
Susana has been a crucial advocate for undocumented students at
NIU, serving on the presidential task force for the support of undocumented
students and contributing to the NIU “Guide for Working with Undocumented Students.” In her role as acting
director for the NIU Latino Resource Center, she collaborated with offices across the university to coordinate
the admission process for undocumented students so that all departments distributed accurate information to
interested parents, students, and high school counselors.
Susana has also been a lifelong advocate for Latino children and families, developing partnerships with
colleagues and community organizations like World Relief, Family Focus, USHLI, LULAC, school districts,
and Conexión Comunidad in DeKalb, IL, where she served as an executive board member. In 2016, Susana
brought local families together to create Universidad para Padres (Parent University), a community outreach
initiative that focuses on the personal growth of parents as a tool to support their children’s pursuit of
postsecondary education.
Susana has made collaboration central to her leadership of Migrant Education Services, as well. She has
collaborated with NIU STEAM to provide STEAM camps to local grantees for only $5 per camp. She has built
new partnerships with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to secure a dedicated representative to assist
migratory students and families with FAFSA and scholarships. And she has invited a wide range of
organizations to partner in better serving migrant students, including the Farmworker & Landscaper Advocacy
Project and Illinois Migrant Council. She co-leads a group of Migrant Education Program staff from across the
Midwest who meet once a month to share lessons learned and resources among peers.
Susana is originally from Monterrey, Nuevo León in México and holds a Licenciatura in Clinical
Psychology from the Universidad de Monterrey (México), a Master of Science in Guidance Counseling, and a
Specialist of Education credential in Educational Psychology from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Presently, Susana is in the Adult Education doctoral program at Northern Illinois University and presents at
national, state, and regional professional conferences, school districts, and graduate programs on issues affecting
undocumented students, family engagement, adult education programs, and college readiness.
