The Anniversaries Committee

Our 400 th Anniversary is not far away. James I
granted us our Charter on 6 December 1617, and we
are hoping that members of the Society will enjoy
celebrating this great moment in our history. The
Anniversaries Committee has been preparing a wide
range of events. They will include:
• The Master’s Day Service: instead of being held
in September, as is usual, it will take place
immediately after the Election Court on
17 August. This will be followed by dinner in
the Hall.
• Evensong in St. Paul’s Cathedral on Tuesday
20 September, which will include a specially
commissioned anthem by the celebrated
composer Michael Berkeley.
Much of the focus of the Committee has been on
the 400 th Appeal. We are particularly grateful to
Members of the Society and to others who have so
kindly contributed to this very worthwhile cause, or
who have taken part in the 400 Club. Thanks to
everyone’s generosity, the Appeal has so far raised
over £200,000; and it is of course still open to
donations. We plan to use this fund for three
purposes: an annual scheme to provide bursaries for
medical student electives abroad; an annual
academic prize for junior doctors at pre-consultant
level; and – in view of our crest, and the prestige that
we have derived from the animal – a grant towards
saving the rhinoceros. If you have not had a chance
to contribute to the Appeal and would still like to do
so, please contact the Clerk’s Office.

given on page 37.
We are also extremely grateful to the Livery
Committee for generously funding the repair and
repainting of the clock in the Courtyard, which will
look very fine indeed, particularly in the context of
the newly restored and decorated walls and
windows.
