Profile of the New Master
Dr Derek Adams
I was born in Leeds in
1941 and moved
immediately to York
where, a little later on, I
attended Archbishop
Holgate’s Grammar
School. After a year
and a term, I transferred
to Roundhay
School, at the age of 12,
when my family
moved back to Leeds.
These two schools
convinced me, with
very little difficulty,
that I was destined for
a career in science and
resulted in my securing
a place at Manchester
University Pharmacy
Department. On graduating,
I returned to
Leeds and employment
with Timothy Whites
and Taylor’s. I soon
decided that I was not
temperamentally fitted
to deal with poorly
people and started
looking for a change
of career. While at
Manchester, I had
made a half-day trip,
with the Pharmacy
Students Association,
to the Geigy factory
at Macclesfield and
