HBA is excited to provide you with 

the opportunity to visit with builders, 

remodelers, suppliers and subcontractors 

at our May HBA Home Show and our 

September HBA Parade of Homes in 2021. 

The HBA is a one-stop shop where you can 

research high-quality builders, remodelers, 

suppliers, subcontractors and other 

companies associated with the construction 

industry. For 67 years, the HBA of Greater 

Springfield has been a consistent advocate 

for the Springfield area residential building 

industry by providing education opportunities 

to our members, maintaining relationships 

with local and national organizations that 

focus on housing affordability, and promoting 

the American dream of home ownership.

access to building materials, record high 

material price increases, labor shortages 

and new housing regulations. Your HBA

2021 

Each year, leading paint 

manufacturers announce their 

most inspiring colors and 

color palettes of the year. 

Not surprisingly, in response to the 

COVID-19 pandemic, the paint 

companies have selected hues 

that evoke comfort and optimism. 

While we all could use a little more 

comfort and optimism, how well will this 

year’s color trends incorporate into Ozarks 

home décor? 

We asked local interior designers Jillian 

Johnson of Decorating Den Interiors and 

Erica Hendrix of Erica Lea Design Studios 

to weigh in. 

Ultimate Gray and Illuminating 

This dynamic duo has been named the 

Pantone colors of the year. The company 

describes the pairing as a classic, 

dependable gray and shining, 

bright shade of lemon that exudes 

happiness, warmth and comfort. 

But, Johnson says this color 

combo isn’t for everyone. 

“Gray has definitely been a huge color 

trend for painting in the home and for 

accents. It’s just a great neutral,” says 

Johnson. “But this Ultimate Gray is in 

the middle between warm and cool 

tones. It could be a little tricky to work 

with if you have earth tones or a warmer 

color palette.” 


Hendrix is a little more opinionated on 

the color, describing Ultimate Gray as a bit 

“cold and uninviting.” 

The combination could work well within 

a modern or minimalist aesthetic, but the 

vibrancy of Illuminating might be a bit 

extreme for use in a typical Ozarks home. 

Urbane Bronze 

Sherwin Williams opted for a strong 

neutral, Urbane Bronze, as its signature 

color of the year. The company says the 

color was chosen for its natural simplicity 

and nature-inspired energy that cultivates 

a sense of calm. 

Hendrix and Johnson both say 

this color is already trending in the 

Springfield area. 

“It’s a really good muddy-gray neutral 

color that gives warmth and depth to a 

space,” notes Hendrix. 

Hendrix has used the color on trim in 

a rustic aesthetic and says if you’re doing 

a remodel and those 20-year-old orangehued 

oak cabinets are staying, Urbane 

Bronze may be a good choice. 

“Urbane Bronze is an incredible color 

because it has some green undertones, 

and the green does not bring out more 

orange in the cabinets. In fact, it kind of 

calms it down.” 

Aegean Teal 

Reflection and renewal played a role 

in Benjamin Moore’s selection of Aegean 

Teal to represent its chosen color of the 

year. This shade blends blue-green and 

gray into an intriguing, soothing hue that 

both Hendrix and Johnson find appealing.

Transcend, Big Cypress & Misty Aqua 

This trio of colors from PPG has been 

dubbed the ”Be Well” color palette for 

2021. It is described as a healthy blend of 

earth tones and tranquil blues. 

Johnson sees both tropical notes and 

mid-century modern design influence in 

this palette, but also thinks these colors 

would work well with the oak interiors 

prevalent here in the Ozarks. 

The COVID-19 pandemic brought new 

meaning and purpose to the concept of 

home as a place to live, work and play. 

While too much time spent in your 

home over the past year may have you 

considering a major renovation, don’t 

underestimate the impact a little paint 

can have. 

“Paint is a big thing. Before you start 

changing the footprint of a kitchen or a 

bathroom, consider changing the color of 

the walls. It can make a huge difference,” 

says Johnson. 

Hendrix adds that if you want to have 

some fun, think beyond your walls. 

“Focal ceilings are in. If you want to do 

something fun and exciting and not cost a 

lot of money, I would paint your ceilings.”

belt, you may want to consider 

calling a professional. 

Routine household maintenance 

such as changing air filters or 

replacing light bulbs is a low 

cost and easy ways to keep your 

home running optimally. But if you’re 

preparing to take on a bigger project, you 

may want to do an honest assessment of 

your capabilities.

Realtors® has seen plenty of poorly 

executed do-it-yourself projects. 

“When you think you’ve seen it all, 

you really haven’t,” says Roblin. From 

ceramic tile laid on top of ceramic tile to 

a deck held together with framing nails, 

Roblin says rookie mistakes can pose 

safety risks, as well as damage your home 

and compromise its value, even in a 

seller’s market. 

“Getting full price or above full price 

depends on the condition of the home,” 

Roblin says. “If it is impeccable, most 

people are getting full price or more 

right now.” 

Before you dive into a DIY project 

remember a keen-eyed realtor can 

spot a not-so-professional job if you 

decide to sell your house in the future. 

Be Realistic About Goals & Expectations 

DIY television shows have made home 

improvement projects look fun and easy, 

but the reality is that an amateur simply 

can’t execute a job at the same level as 

a professional.

Realtors® has seen plenty of homeowners 

get in over their heads. 

“You can get into it and fail miserably,” 

she warns. “Then you have to call a 

professional and have it redone. It ends 

up costing you twice as much as it might

Tradespeople spend years perfecting 

their skills. Don’t assume that you can 

pick up the skill in a weekend. Start small 

and see how it goes. If you are thinking 

about taking on a bigger project, at least

Another thing to consider is design 

continuity. Will what you’re doing fit in with 

the style of the rest of your home? 

It’s something that Murray notices 

often. A homeowner may have done a 


great job. But if it results in a lack 

of continuity throughout the house, it’s 

a problem. 

“Modern styles have very clean lines 

and are a great look in a home, but the 

whole house has to reflect that style,” 

she says. 

Consider The Costs 

The costs of DIY projects can really 

add up. In addition to materials, you may 

need specialized tools or equipment. 

Consider what your time is worth. 

What might take a professional a day 

to do, could take you several weekends 

to complete. When you consider 

all of the costs, plus the risk of not 

getting it right, hiring a professional just 

might be a better use of your budget. 

Stay Away From Structural Changes 

Structural changes are not a DIY 

project. Don’t attempt anything that 

might jeopardize the structural integrity of 

your home. 

Check On Permits 

Adding a wall or a deck? You might 

need a permit to complete your project. 

If you are unsure, contact the city. 

Avoiding this step can result in negative 

consequences. You may be ordered to 

stop the work and could face a hefty fine.

from COVID-19 

Homeowners have transformed 

their living spaces into 

classrooms, home offices and 

gyms over the past year. 

With people spending more 

time at home, builders are 

reimagining the future of 

home design. As homeowners around 

the world seek ways to maximize the 

functionality of their living spaces, locally 

there are distinct trends emerging that 

are in line with what’s happening across 

the country. 

Touchless/Hands-Free Home Features 

Gina McMurtrey of GMI Design Group 

says that perhaps the most significant 

shift she sees is homeowners adopting 

technology to simplify their lives. Touchless 

faucets, voice-activated appliances and 

technology that can help with cleaning are 

becoming more popular. 

“They want to be more present in their 

homes and enjoy their space without a lot 

of fuss or maintenance,” says McMurtrey. 

Touchless and hands-free home features 

can also help reduce the spread of germs – 

another reason these items are in demand. 

Antimicrobial Surfaces 

Keeping surfaces germ-free is a higher 

priority now than ever before. The organic 

allure of copper and bronze has made 

these materials revered and timeless 

choices for home hardware. Now, the 

antimicrobial qualities of these elements are 

elevating their status as choice materials for 

accessories, pulls, knobs, door hardware 

and fixtures. 

Creating Intentional Spaces 

Getting homework, virtual play dates and 

work conference calls completed all in the 

same space is a challenge, and McMurtrey 

says it is wearing on people. 

“Every area of our lives is overlapping right 

now. People are trying to find a way with 

their interiors to create a needed divide.” 

She says one popular trend is making a 

bathroom feel more like a spa or a retreat. 

She also sees benefit in having one work 

zone that can be put away at the end of the 

day to help separate it from family time. 

New home designs include small, 

convertible spaces or nooks that 

provide additional private or semiprivate 

space. 

Putting Everything In Its Place 

It may be a combination of homeowners 

having more time on their hands and more 

time at home, but McMurtrey is finding that 

more of her clients are looking for ways to 

declutter and pare down. 

“People are paring down and getting rid 

of the things that are kind of superfluous. 

They want to simplify, and that, in turn, 

brings the stress down.” 

McMurtrey says she sees a trend where 

people want everything they own to have a 

purpose and a place for it to be put away. 

Having a place for everything has always 

been a benchmark of smart home design, 

but it appears that will be even higher 

priority from this point forward. 

And certainly, other needs that have 

emerged from the pandemic will influence 

home storage solutions in the future. From 

more space to store non-perishable food, 

home office accessories or items in the 

entryway, additional storage space will be 

a valuable feature in future home designs.

Transforming Outdoor Spaces 

A year of social distancing has made 

homeowners realize the value of a functional 

outdoor space to host family dinners and 

barbeques. Simple improvements from 

upgrading patio furniture to building out 

decks will be at the top of any exterior 

home feature must-have list. 

The hottest outdoor living trend seems to 

be outdoor kitchens. 

Joan Nutting of Maschino’s says they are 

seeing massive growth in the demand for 

outdoor kitchens. 

“Typically, our area is 10 years behind 

the trend, but we’re on the cutting edge of 

this one.” 

From islands to outdoor seating and 

heating, and any kind of grill you can 

imagine, Springfield-area homeowners 

are turning their outdoor spaces into 

entertaining oases. 

“We have always encouraged our 

customers to make their outdoor spaces 

little vacation spots,” says Nutting. “And 

with the limitations on travel, people are 

looking for more ways to enjoy being 

at home.” 

The key, Nutting says, is to have a plan. 

The design of your outdoor kitchen needs 

to be functional, and you should look back 

six months or a year later and be happy 

with what you did. Also, with a good plan, 

you don’t have to tackle the whole project 

at once. 

Nutting does stress the need for 

patience. Incredibly high demand, the 

ongoing pandemic and the devastating 


winter storm in Texas earlier this year 

have all contributed to longer lead times 

and increased prices. 

Plan ahead, and understand there will 

likely be delays. Also, be wary of online 

vendors that claim to have items in-stock 

that are on back order everywhere else. 

“Call and double-check to make sure the 

item is really in stock,” says Nutting. She 

has had customers order items from an 

online vendor only to be notified later they 

would have a wait time of up to six weeks 

for their order to ship.

From large appliances to smaller 

gadgets that connect to your 

mobile device, there are plenty of 

opportunities to stay connected 

to the activity in your home. 

One key home accessory gaining 

in popularity is the electronic 

doorbell. These devices can be 

personalized to fit your needs and have 

a variety of features. Figure out what the 

buzz is about and decide if a new doorbell 

is for you. Consider the following. 

Wired vs. Wireless 

The two main types of electronic 

doorbells are wired or wireless. The 

most common doorbell is wired, which 

is connected to your home’s electrical 

system. A wired doorbell doesn’t require 

batteries, has a potentially longer lifespan, 

and has a clear and dependable sound. 

A wireless doorbell doesn’t have to be 

connected to your home’s electrical 

system making it easy to install and 

flexible with placement near your door, 

but it does require batteries. 

Mobile App Accessibility 

If you want a doorbell that connects to 

your mobile device, consider purchasing 

a “smart” doorbell. These devices 

connect to your home Wi-Fi and are 

available for both wired and wireless 

doorbells. Smart doorbells allow you 

to view what’s happening at your front 

door step via video through a mobile 

app. Most smart doorbell apps can be 

customized to send alerts to notify you 

of activity at your front door. 

Type of Material 

Wired and wireless doorbells are 

available in standard sizes and neutral 

colors. If you like your current doorbell 

cover and would like to keep it, be sure 

to select a doorbell that will fit. Covers 

are available at hardware stores in all 

shapes, colors and sizes. 

Sound and Video Quality 

You can customize both wired and 

wireless doorbells to play chimes, music 

or spoken words. The sound quality for 

electronic doorbells is generally good. 

You may want to take a closer look at 

the sound range capabilities depending 

upon the size of your home. Dense walls, 

like stone for example, can interfere with 

wireless signals. In those cases, a wired 

doorbell is a better option. 

When it comes to video features, look 

at image resolution and field of view 

capabilities. The higher the resolution, 

the better the video quality, and keep in 

mind that some cameras only capture 

what is directly in front of the doorbell. 

Special Features 

Both wired and wireless doorbells 

have options for special features. For 

example, some models have flashing 

alerts for hearing impaired individuals or 

motion sensors to alert you to movement 

or sound outside your door. 

Since your doorbell may have to 

endure the elements, double check 

to make sure the device you select 

is weatherproof.

Dig Deeper To Find The 

Right Contractor For Your 

Home Remodel Project 

These days, before you buy a 

toaster, book a hotel room, or 

decide where to eat dinner, 

you can head to the internet to 

easily access information and peruse the 

experiences that other consumers have 

had with the product or business. 

Consumer reviews are abundant and 

available for virtually anything you want 

to spend money on, including home 

improvements. But like so much of the 

information you find online, it can be hard 

to tell which reviews are most accurate, or 

even legitimate. 

Hiring a home remodeler is an important 

decision. Though online reviews of local 

contractors may be helpful, they won’t 

tell you everything you need to know to 

make the right decision for your home 

remodel project. 

Proceed with Caution 

The internet makes it easy to find a 

wealth of information with just a few quick 

clicks of the mouse. Much of what you 

find will provide some useful background, 

but you can’t believe everything you see 

or read. When looking through customer 

rating sites, use good judgment to weigh the 

value of online reviews - positive or negative. 

Here are some things to consider when 

researching home remodelers online. 

An abundance of positive, brief, nondescript 

reviews that use excessively 

promotional language can indicate that 

the reviews are phony.

If the reviewer’s location doesn’t match 

the region that the remodeler serves, it 

could also be an indicator that the review 

is bogus. 

Don’t make a judgment on a single 

review. Read at least a dozen of to see if 

you notice any common themes or trends. 

Keep in mind that customers who have 

positive experiences are far less likely to 

post a review than customers who have 

negative experiences. 

While online customer reviews may 

help you narrow down your options, you 

shouldn’t base your decision solely on 

online reviews. 

Check Other Sources 

The Better Business Bureau, www.bbb. 

org, can be a good resource to see if a 

business has a pattern of bad behavior or 

unresolved complaints. 

A CaseNet search of public court 

records (courts.mo.gov/casenet) can also 

help identify any “bad actors.” Keep in 

mind though that anyone can be sued. 

But, if you see that a contractor has been 

repeatedly sued for the same thing by 

multiple clients, it may be a red flag. 

Start Talking 

After you’ve done your online research, 

narrow down your list of potential 

remodelers to your top choices, and 

schedule interviews with them so you can 

ask questions and get a feel for whether 

they would be a good fit for your project. 

Having a good rapport with your 

contractor is very important. “It can be 

a long process,” says Jason Bekebrede of 

Monticello Custom Homes & Remodeling. 

“Find someone you feel like you can 

get along with through the length of 

the project.” 

Ask for recent client references. And, this 

next step is important – actually call those 

references with thoughtful questions. 

“Don’t just ask if it turned out ok,” says 

Bekebrede. “Ask about the process and 

how the builder handled things that came 

up during the project.” 

Ask open-ended questions that press 

beyond a “yes” or “no” answer. If the 

reference would recommend working 

with the contractor, ask them why. How 

is it that the contractor has earned that 

homeowner’s “seal of approval?” 

A home remodel project can be a major 

undertaking and a significant investment. 

Do your due diligence to ensure that you 

hire the best contractor for the job.
