A Word from Robert Whitfield 

The past five years since celebrating our 85th 

anniversary have been memorable for many and 

varied reasons. We have enjoyed many historic 

highs, and some challenges too. As always, 

you as employees continue to shine through 

whatever comes your way and I would like to pay 

tribute to that in this 90th Anniversary Yearbook 

introduction. 

90 years of The Dorchester truly is a milestone, 

and I am so proud to have been general manager 

for this incredible hotel for the past four years. 

When I first joined in 2017, I realised I had 

joined a remarkable hotel, cherished and cared 

for by each of its team members. 2016 had been 

a great year for the hotel, with highest revenue 

rates to date and the launch of our ‘Crafting 

Perfect Moments’ concept, which has grown so 

much over the past few years in our goal to put 

guest centric experiences at the forefront of what 

we do. 

In 2017, this work on guest centricity really 

started to come to life, and the word ‘Nexus’, 

now so familiar to us, was brand new. I have 

seen this grow over the past four years and am 

excited to see Nexus continue to develop and 

enhance our guests’ experience greatly. In 2018, 

we launched ‘DOR45’, what we now all fondly 

know as ‘DC Legends’, our internal employee 

intranet, which has been our cornerstone for 

communication, engagement and sustaining our 

Dorchester community in the last couple of years. 

In 2019 we relaunched The Grill with Tom 

Booton at the helm, and for me personally this 

was especially exciting, bringing in a fresh new 

concept to our much loved fine dining restaurant. 

We also celebrated ten years of 3-Michelin stars 

at Alain Ducasse, a truly remarkable accolade, 

and very well deserved for a team who I know 

put so much passion into every element of the 

restaurant. In 2019, we also saw the exciting 

return of our Junket business, and our event 

rooms were buzzing with excitement. This was 

also the year we began our partnership with 

Manorfield Primary School, and I look forward to 

seeing this relationship blossom even further as 

we continue to work with them. 

Last year the global pandemic saw the closure 

of our hotel for the first time in its 90 year 

history. Nevertheless, this did not stop us as we 

connected in every way possible, from my daily 

coffee chats, to charity fundraising, pub quizzes, 

history talks, kitchen master classes and even 

our virtual winter ball. Nothing could stop our 

Dorchester community from thriving. 

Innovation & Creativity became our mantra 

as we launched The Dorchester at Home and 

countless new guest experiences, and this spirit 

continues as we recently launched our outdoor 

dining in the Garden Globes, Bar Terrace and 

RoofTop Pop-Up. 

As I reflect on the past five years, I am incredibly 

proud of what you have achieved. Your humility, 

tenacity and passion is outstanding, and I 

continue to be excited for what will happen next 

for our hotel. 

As I write this, we are just around the corner 

from reopening fully and, hopefully, to the end of 

the pandemic. I am very much looking forward 

to the return of our busy hotel, buzzing event 

rooms, merry restaurants and of course, to our 

people doing what they do best; taking care of 

our guests. 

I am immensely proud to be a part of The 

Dorchester’s journey. Here is to 90 years of 

storied history, and to many more years to come.

‘The Perfect Hotel’ 

Celebrating 90 distinguished years of The Dorchester 

Louis Armstrong. Twiggy. Alfred 

Hitchcock. Peter Sellers. Stevie 

Wonder. Brigitte Bardot. Rod 

Stewart. Elizabeth Taylor. What 

do they all have in common? 

It sounds like the line-up for 

a dream dinner party, or a 

really, really interesting game 

of Cluedo (our money’s on 

Hitchcock). But no, there’s 

another thread that strings 

these illustrious individuals 

together; they were all guests and 

admirers of The Dorchester. 

Weddings & Romance 

Across our 90-year history the good and the 

occasionally, misunderstood, have married, 

honeymooned or fallen in love at the hotel. 

In 1937, multimillionaire Baron Jean Empain 

wed ‘golden girl’ of cabaret, Rozell Rowland, 

having caught his attention when she appeared 

in gold paint during a burlesque performance at 

the hotel. In 1947, Mary Churchill – daughter 

of Sir Winston – married Captain Christopher 

Soames at St Margaret’s Church in Westminster, 

before a reception at The Dorchester. The same 

year, Prince Philip, held his official bachelor party 

in the Park Suite of the hotel, a day before his 

marriage to Princess Elizabeth.

In June 1959, Artistotle Onassis threw a lavish 

party for Maria Callas and it was in November 

of that year that they both ended left their 

partners and started their relationship. In 1964, 

actors Peter Sellers and Britt Ekland married at 

Guildford Registry Office – ten days after their 

first date, having first met in the lobby of The 

Dorchester (he would send her every bloom the 

hotel florist had). Hollywood royalty Richard 

Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, played out their 

tempestuous marriage at the hotel as regular 

guests. In 1964, they spent their honeymoon in 

the Oliver Messel Suite. 

In 1973, one-time James Bond George 

Lazenby and Chrissie Townsend held their 

wedding reception at the hotel, action man 

Sylvester Stallone married Jennifer Flavin in 

a civil ceremony in 1997, David Jason married 

Gill Hinchcliffe on the eve of receiving his 

knighthood at Buckingham Palace and the 

late, great Barbara Windsor tied the knot with 

Scott Mitchell in 2000. A year previously, Rod 

Stewart had met Penny Lancaster in the hotel 

– ‘a tall blonde girl in her twenties had come 

over and asked for an autograph’ he wrote in his 

autobiography and in 2012, another music star – 

Ronnie Wood – married Sally Humphreys at the 

Penthouse and Pavilion with 45 guests. 

Music Artists 

The 1930s must have been a magical decade 

to be at the hotel. We opened the hotel with 

a very strong musical programme right from 

the get-go. We held regular dinner dances, 

had feature artists on Sundays, the Midnight 

Follies were in cabaret, Alberta Hunter sang 

with the dance bands as did Gracie Fields and 

Helen Clare. Jack Jackson and his Orchestra 

had a five-year residency at the hotel and even 

Ronnie Scott (third saxophone) was part of 

the band until Jack sacked him. Henry Sherek 

was a theatrical agent booking the acts. 

Since then we have had an incredible number 

of musical artists who have been to the hotel as 

guests. Some of them to perform in the hotel for 

private parties, others staying in our suites while 

they have a series of concerts at London venues. 

We don’t have space to list them all here but 

let me tell you we have found images of some 

220 at the hotel so far. The list includes: Andy

Beatles, Boy George, Celine Dion, Cliff Richard, 

Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra,

James Bond 

We believe we could probably claim the title as 

The James Bond hotel in London as we have so 

many good connections with the character and 

the film production company. 

Here’s the start of that list we have been building 

up as we explore our history: 

- Ian Fleming played bridge, stayed & dined at 

The Dorchester during WW2 and in the late 

40s and early 50s 

- All four Producers of Bond have been guests of 

the hotel 

- EON had an office at The Dorchester in the 

60s and 70s 

- EON’s main offices were at Audley Square 

nearby 

- All six James Bonds have been guests of 

The Dorchester 

- Roger Moore and George Lazenby were 

introduced to the world’s press as the new 

James Bond at the hotel 

- Jane Seymour who played Solitaire in Live 

and Let Die, was interviewed for her role at 

the hotel 

- The Dr No. script was completed by 

scriptwriter Terence Young in a suite during 

Dec 1960 – Jan 61 

- Sean Connery was persuaded to return 

to be Bond in 1970 – the deal was done 

at The Dorchester

- Fleming’s boss, on which M was based, was a 

guest of the hotel during WW2 

- Nine Bond villains have been guests at 


- William Boyd’s book ‘Solo’ featuring Bond as 

the central character, opens with Bond waking 

up at The Dorch’ 

- 14 singers who were all the lead vocalist of a 

Bond theme song been guests at the hotel 

- The lyrics for the theme song to the 1967 

Casino Royal film, ‘The Look of Love’, were 

written at the hotel by Hal David 

- The Dorch’ hosted the junkets for ‘Quantum 

of Solace’ and ‘Skyfall’

M Hubert Givenchy, aged 28, using 120 

models, presented his clothes for the first 

time ever in the UK in the ballroom of The 

Dorchester at a society ball in 1955. 

Christian Dior came to the hotel in March 1957 

as the principal speaker at a Foyles Literary 

Luncheon and launched his autobiography 

‘Dior by Dior’. In April 1966, British fashion 

designer and fashion icon Mary Quant did 

the same with her book ‘Quant on Quant’. 

The Beauty industry icons of Helena 

Rubenstein, Elizabeth Arden both came to the 

hotels in the 1950s and more recently Charlotte 

Tilbury has attended various and personally 

came to do the makeup of Catherine Zeta-Jones 

who was the host for a Walpole event in 2017. 

We have also had three perfume launches at the 

hotel, in 2019 Mariah Carey with ‘Forever’, in 

2017 Nicloe Sherzinger with ‘Chosen’ and in 

1990, Elizabeth Taylor with ‘White Diamonds’.

Fashion 

We have an incredible history with fashion with 

innumerable fashion shows in the late 1940s, 50s 

and 60s covering childrenswear, millinery and fur 

– some of them attended by Princess Elizabeth 

and Princess Margaret. The bridal shows started 

in the 1960s continue today in conjunction with 

Caroline Castigliano and BRIDES magazine. 

Other designers with catwalk shows at the 

hotel include Vivienne Westwood, Philip 

Treacy and Alice Temperley among them. 

Models that have been guests at the hotel 

probably started with Barbara Goalen and 

have continued in recent decades with Cindy 

Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Elle 

Macpherson, Jerry Hall, Jodie Kidd, Bella Hadid, 

Claudia Schiffer, Kitty Spencer and David Gandy. 

Wartime Guests at the hotel 

Our most significant guest was General 

Eisenhower and his accompanying military 

leaders including, General Clark and Captain 

Harry Butcher. They stayed at the hotel from 

1942 to 1945 using it as their in-town base when 

they weren’t at Telegraph Cottage in Kingstonupon-Thames. 

Prime Minister Winston Churchill 

would occasionally visit the American General in 

his suite. 

The hotel’s modern structure of reinforced 

concrete and steel, completed just eight years 

before the outbreak of war, made the hotel a 

popular choice as it was thought to be bombproof. 

Six Government ministers came to stay; 

Halifax, Portal, Stanley, Lyttleton, Sandys, 

and Cooper. We also attracted society figures 

included: Emerald Cunard, Sybil Colefax, Doris 

Castlerosse, Margaret Greville, Irene Curzon, 

Margaret Sweeny and Clarissa Spencer-Churchill.

We understand from various books that wartime 

affairs took place; Italian Ambassador Dino Grande 

visiting his lover ‘Baba’ Metcalfe, Churchill’s 

daughter-in-law Pamela Digby and Averell 

Harriman, Ian Fleming visiting Ann O’Neill. 

Many writers came to stay or dine at the hotel in 

wartime including; Somerset Maugham, Edith 

Sitwell, H G Wells, T S Elliot and even the film 

maker Rosie Newman screening her film ‘Britain 

at War’ which was attended by the Duchess of 

Gloucester. The hotel was also the base for war 

correspondents; Ernest Hemingway, Martha 

Gellhorn and Ed Murrow and they chatted 

freely with the RAF officers in our Park Lounge 

bar led by the legendary Harry Craddock. 

Politician, author and diarist, Sir Henry ‘Chips’ 

Channon was a frequent guest and once observed, 

‘London lives well. I’ve never seen more lavishness, 

more money spent or more food consumed 

than tonight; and the dancefloor was packed... 

Everybody wanted a room at The Dorch.’ 

British Prime Ministers 

at the hotel 

Since we opened in 1931 we have had all 20 

British Prime Ministers as guests at the hotel, 

be that staying or attending functions or private 

dinners. From Ramsay MacDonald coming to

the hotel to meet Mahatma Gandi in 1931 to 

our present PM, Boris Johnson, attending the 

Fortune Forum Club Dinner. Margaret Thatcher 

had a 52 year association with the hotel. We first 

welcomed her to the hotel in 1968 and her last 

visit to us was in 2010. Similarly Prime Minister 

Harold Wilson has a 30 year connection with us. 

As well as seeing him during his premierships of 

1964–70 and 1974–76, we first saw him in 1947 

when he was president of the Board of Trade and 

then finally in 1977. 

British Royal family 

The British Royals have been regular attendees 

of the hotel. Queen Mary of Teck came to the 

hotel for a private showround with the Managing 

Director of Gordon Hotels Ltd in March 1931 

even before the hotel had opened. Then in 

the 1930s we had several visits to charity balls 

by the Duke and Duchess of York. Their two 

young children Elizabeth and Margaret came to 

the hotel for children’s parties. Edward, Prince 

of Wales, soon to become King in 1936, visited 

the hotel with Wallace Simpson in 1935. The 

coronation of King George VI in May 1937 was 

a busy time for the hotel with grandstand seats 

on the roof tops to give a bird’s eye view of the 

procession along Park Lane. 

After the war, Princess Elizabeth and Princess 

Margaret attended several charity balls and even 

fashion shows in the ballroom. 

In 1947, Princess Elizabeth was attending 

a private dinner in the Park Suite on the 

evening her engagement to Lieutenant Philip 

Mountbatten was announced. 

Later that same year on the eve of the wedding 

on November 19, HRH Sir Philip Mountbatten 

held his stag party with 11 naval friends in the 

Park Suite. After dinner he asked to be taken 

to the kitchens to meet the chef and thank him, 

he conversed in French with John Baptiste 

Virlogeux, the Maître Chef at The Dorchester. 

Princess Marina was a long term guest at the 

hotel in the post war years and left for the 1947

royal wedding with her son and daughter who 

were a page and bridesmaid. 

In June 1953 the coronation of Queen 

Elizabeth II was a time of joy and celebration 

in the city with The Dorchester playing its 

part and the hotel’s main façade decorated 

by Oliver Messel. Many international guests 

from the Commonwealth were staying in the 

hotel including Prince Philip’s uncle, Earl 

Mountbatten of Burma and his wife. 

Princess Margaret attended many events at the 

hotel including the time she met The Beatles 

after the royal premier of their movie A Hard 

Day’s Night. In 1960 she married Anthony 

Armstrong-Jones (Lord Snowdon), who was the 

nephew of Oliver Messel. Many years later Lord 

Snowdon spoke at a Foyles Literary Lunch and 

held a book launch at the hotel attended by his 

children Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah. 

The children and grandchildren of HM The 

Queen and HRH Prince Philip have all been to 

the hotel. Prince Charles to meet The Goons 

and attend and an Australia Club dinner and 

Police Bravery Awards. Prince William and his 

wife Kate have been for private events and 

Prince Harry for balls for his charity Sentebale 

and other charity events. Princess Anne has 

been on several occasions, once accompanied 

by her first husband Captain Mark Philips. In 

more recent years her children Peter and Zara 

have attended events accompanied by their 

respective partners. Prince Andrew for NSPCC 

events and the Anglo-Spanish Society dinner. 

Prince Edward accompanied by his wife Sophie 

for various charity events. Princess Diana visited 

the hotel on several occasions, for the charities, 

ChickenShed Theatre, Barnardo’s and Shaukat 

Khanum Cancer Hospital. 

We are delighted to have been chosen as the 

hotel for nine State Banquets during the reign of 

Queen Elizabeth II, when the visiting head of 

state, reciprocates the hospitality of the Palace 

with a complementary dinner a few evenings 

later during their stay.

What did you do to stay 

connected as a team during 

the pandemic? 

We stayed connected via different methods: 

- Masterclasses and training at least twice a week 

with all the team and any team members of the 

hotel that wanted it. 

Which Dorchester Collection 

value, best represents your 

department and why? 

Even if Creativity is an inherent part of the usual 

work in a restaurant, we strongly believe that the 

team is the central focus of the restaurant in order 

to achieve greater goals. This is why we endeavour 

to share everything between the Front of house, 

the Kitchen and the administrative team of Alain 

Ducasse at The Dorchester and the other outlets 

of The Dorchester (even with our suppliers). 

WORKING TOGETHER is the value we cherish 

the most as we believe a well functioning team 

and happy team members is the key to success. 

What are your greatest 

achievements/milestones as a 

department in the last five years? 

In a nutshell, having three stars at The Michelin 

Guide since 2010. 

Since the opening of ADAD in 2007, the 

different teams of the restaurant always surpassed 

themselves to reach this level of excellency. 

Now with a focus only on the last five years, 

the restaurant has seen a lot of changes : a new 

executive chef, a new executive manager, a 

new restaurant director, the relaunching of the 

restaurant with a revitalised concept and new 

decor and a world pandemic… But despite of 

all these changes the restaurant has always been 

able to secure the three stars. 

- Visits of our suppliers facilities when we could 

and trainings with them on Zoom to maintain 

the relationship. 

- Charity involvements and personal projects 

were all shared through connected groups. 

(E.G. sommelier who visited vineyard showed 

pictures, chef gave their ‘at home recipes’, we 

even followed the hatching of the quail eggs of 

one of us. 

- Regular updates, promotions and masterclasses 

for the community of the restaurant.

Banqueting 




To pick one then I would have to say 

‘WORKING TOGETHER’ . We are a 

very small team and we have been together 

for a long time. In events no two days are the 

same and we have to adapt all the time. We 

volunteered to run Chesters when we came back 

after the first lockdown as there were no events 

planned and we wanted to help out where we 

could. The team is also very passionate about 

Dorchester Collection and all its values. 




We were very instrumental in the successful 

running of the Chelsea Flower Show. We have 

also had some fantastic events in our rooms 

including the wedding of a Rolling Stone. We 

have also seen our Ballroom turned into a Harry 

Potter studio and when we had our highest 

grossing event it had many international singing 

stars singing on the stage. Where else could you 

have such events?

the pandemic? 

We had Zoom calls at least twice a week and 

we also had a picnic in Hyde Park, we attended 

many training sessions and masterclasses. We also 

did some departmental training such as how to 

interpret the P&L. Some of us also were helping 

in Manorfield Primary School for a few days.

Banqueting Kitchen 




With a hotel kitchen as large as ours it is all about 

team work. WORKING TOGETHER is the most 

important of Dorchester Collection’s values for our 

section of the business. 




Banqueting had a record year on revenue during 

this period. Restructure of the workflow to 

increase productivity. Implementation to rotate 

chefs with their duties to be more agile with 

demand in every sense. 2019 Banqueting kitchen 

got awarded ‘Best Department’. 2018 been part 

of Chelsea Flower Show with afternoon tea. 



the pandemic? 

- Helmut made both video calls and phone 

calls to keep in touch with the team 

- Joe Flattery was in regular contact with 

his team. 

- We had regular masterclasses. 

- Who knew! It turns out we have a DJ in 

our team. 

- We enjoyed quizzes over Zoom. 

- Ismail delivered food for charity to vulnerable 

families during the various lockdowns. 

- Alasdair volunteered to help his local church to

- Alisha, our Departmental Coach, updated the 

entire kitchen team with ‘Inter Department 

Training’. 

- Salvatore sewed some PPE for NHS and being 

one of the first to do so has encouraged others to 

do similar projects. 

- In between the lockdowns, some team 

members helped at Coworth Park which was 

very busy. 

- Since the start of the pandemic we have 

taken on the catering for all team members in 

‘Chesters’, which was well received. 

- Some team members helped at the Manorfield 

Primary School after the first lockdown as well 

at the Gorsefield Rural Studies Centre.

In IBA World Cocktail Championship 2016 Lucia 

Montanelli was crowned winner of the Sparkling 

Cocktail Competition for her drink Sakura Blossom 

and came third overall, a tremendous achievement. 

In 2019 Denise Elisei represented The Bar in 

the Amaro Montenegro competition and took 

second place. 

Lucia once again proved her amazing skills and 

personality by winning the Beluga Signature 

Global Final which was held in Moscow in 2019. 

Giacomo Faure was voted as a DC employee 

of the year during the Winter Ball in 2020 and 

without a doubt brought a lot of pride to our 

department and was well deserved. 

Other great achievements of our Bar were a short 

notice creation of the The Dorchester Terrace 

and Garden this year. 



the pandemic? 

As a team we were having our regular meetings 

twice a week on Zoom alongside communicating 

daily via the WhatsApp and sharing some 

highlights of our day. A lot of informative 

trainings and tastings involving different spirit 

production by the brand representatives. Some 

trainings were arranged by us for the whole 

F&B department which included (gin history 

and production, vermouth history, history of the 

cocktails for the International Cocktail Day etc.). 

Inbetween the lockdown we visited the Hiver 

Tap Room to see how the beer is made and learn 

how to extract honey and taste some delicious 

products. Despite all the frustration we were 

trying to support one another and made sure that 

everyone knew they could rely on the team.

your department and why? 

‘WORKING TOGETHER’ is the value that 

best represents the butlers. Although we 

are a very small team, our strength is in the 

connections and relationships we have with other 

departments in the hotel. Working together 

closely with our colleagues allows our small team 

to have a large impact on the guest experience. 




We are a team that often works behind the 

scenes due to the discreet nature of our role, and 

in the past we have not always shared the fun 

and exciting things we do with the rest of the 

hotel. The Butlers became part of the ‘Guest 

Experience’ team as a result of the Front of 

House restructuring, which means were are now 

letting our creativity shine through a bit more and 

sharing this with our colleagues also (you may 

have seen our videos and posts on DC Legends). 

The department was honoured to have 

Emmanuel Okang selected as The Dorchester’s 

Legend of the Year recently. With 29 years of 

service, Emmanuel truly is a legend. He takes 

the best lessons of our illustrious past and 

contributes them to discussions about improving 

what we do as a team in the future.

meetings were often a highlight of the week. 

We used our time out of the hotel to do some 

learning and kept things fun. It started with 

Cultural Awareness Week, where we taught 

each other key aspects of the culture of 

guests we frequently serve. Our educational 

programme also included guest speakers from 

within the hotel (Christopher Delalonde) 

and even a local business (Sautter Cigars on 

Mount Street). Perhaps surprisingly, we grew 

much closer as a work family in 2020 despite 

spending very little time physically together.

Barbara Corcoran used to say “You can’t fake 

passion”. This is so apparent in the Engineering 

department of this wonderful hotel. We constantly 

develop our PASSION by being creative and 

working together. This amazing combination of 

various personalities creates a department that is 

able to solve all problems and is always willing to 

help. Love The Dorchester!

Teamwork is critical to running the engineering 

department of a hotel of the size and complexity of 

The Dorchester. At no time more than during the 

pandemic was it important to maintain the links 

that bond an effective team. The challenges of 

doing this when varying numbers of the team were 

working remotely, self-isolating or on furlough, 

was met head on with a determination to not let 

what we had developed slip away. Jyoti Hirani 

(PA to the area chief engineer) led the initiative 

of ensuring that each member of the team was 

contacted personally by herself or the line manager 

a minimum of once per week. In addition regular 

social gatherings via Zoom helped stabilise moral.

2017 The main kitchen undertook an 

amazing transformation and now the state-of-theart 

kitchen you see today. It includes a large gas 

fired pizza oven and a wine tasting room which 

can hold up to eight guests for the ultimate wine 

tasting experience. 

2020 Team of the year – After what was a 

very tough year for us all, the engineering team 

powered on and kept our wonderful hotel looking 

immaculate. We were rewarded for our hard 

works at the end of year awards being crowned 

‘Team of the year’. 

2020 Pastry kitchen – Phase two of the 

kitchen project saw the pastry have a complete 

refurbishment. Daniel and his team can now 

bake the cakes and pastries from a state-of-theart 

pastry kitchen.

Passionately working together with respect for 

one another. Too many values? Ok, well we love 

to do it all here in events but honestly, we feel 

like there is such pride in what we do every day. 

We are such a supportive and connected team 

that all of our values ring true for us every day! If 

we really HAD to pick only one then WORKING 

TOGETHER would be the value that best 

represents us. The entire team would selflessly 

take on a heavier load if they saw a colleague 

in need and no one is left to struggle when the 

going gets tough! 




So many events, so many guests, so many 

memories… Over the last five years we have seen 

two of the largest weddings in Dorchester history, 

grossing in excess of £1million in revenue for the 

hotel and featuring some of the biggest global 

artists including J Lo, Enrique, Kylie, Robbie, 

Pink, Lionel and of course Sean-a- Paul! Now all 

that glitz and glam is completely overshadowed 

by our most high profile guest over the last five 

years… none other than her majesty Queen 

Elizabeth II herself. Putting the excitement 

aside, by far our greatest achievement has been 

the merging of the special visits department 

into events creating a larger Groups and Events 

department with a pool of incredibly talented 

Events managers who are now able to master 

both sides of this business.

To be honest, we couldn’t stay away….. We had 

our usual weekly meetings, lots of video calls 

between the team, memes galore on WhatsApp, 

then came the four hour Quizzes before we 

realised the Zoom masterclass was where the 

real fun was! There ensued a good 6 weeks of 

cocktail making, we had guacamole making, 

Moroccan snacks, and daal masterclasses before 

we were finally free to meet again and had 

amazing picnics in the parks enjoying some long 

awaited laughs together. ‘A day at the races’ 

Zoom Ascot experience, VE Day and a lockdown 

Hen party for Emily were particular faves for us 

during the summer. Lockdown 2.0 we may have 

lost the enthusiasm for the quiz but our love for a 

social continued with a Burns night extravaganza 

and so they continue.

The Food and beverage division encompasses 

all Dorchester Collection values; however 

CREATIVITY and WORKING TOGETHER 

are the two values that best represent the food 

and beverage team. As a team we worked 

together creatively most recently to help 

launch our at home service including afternoon 

tea hampers and ‘Make it yourself’ kits in 

the Grill. We also launched The Dorchester 

Terrace and Garden along with garden pods by 

working closely with our supplier’s support. 

The entire food and beverage team worked 

together to support each other by being flexible 

and working in events, back of house and all 

areas of the hotel to support the operations.

Over the last five years the food and beverage 

team have grown immensely with the arrival of 

many new talented leaders and teams across the 

entire division. With this we have seen a new 

level of energy and enthusiasm and improved 

service for our guests. The kitchens and pastry 

department have been completely refurbished 

along with Alain Ducasse. The Grill has been

restructured and relaunched. A new strong 

partnership with Moët Hennessey in the last few 

years has also ensured further support for creative 

projects across the hotel and new outdoor 

dining activities. We continue to strengthen our 

partnerships with RHS for Chelsea Flower Show 

and The Chaine Des Rotisseurs with Russell 

Platt being inducted in to the organisation in 

2019 Richard Newell and Tom Booton were also 

recipients of the prestigious Acorn award.

At the start of the pandemic the food and 

beverage teams stayed in contact through our 

group messages, Zoom one to one and team 

meetings and food and beverage masterclasses. 

When the restrictions allowed the team met 

for picnics and a trip to Gorsefield to help the 

Manorfield Primary School team and spend the 

day together. The team have also been connected 

through learning online by attending trainings in 

food, wines and supplier hosted events.

For anyone who does not know, there are 

many different roles within finance; accounts 

payable, accounts receivable, cost control, 

income audit, management accounts, payroll 

and our management team. All our tasks are 

very different however we rely on, and support 

each other as we need to WORK TOGETHER 

with both our team and the hotel teams to pull 

together the profit & loss accounts and the 

balance sheet for three hotels to report to DC 

on a tight monthly time frame. This year even 

more so as we are spread across the London area 

in satellite home offices (aka kitchens/bedrooms/ 

dining tables). 



the pandemic? 

Finance continued to work throughout the 

pandemic, with some of us taking periods of 

furlough, flexi-furlough and others working 

through so we continued to have (at least) weekly 

virtual meetings which everyone could attend. 

With the help of Zoom we got a little insight 

into each other’s homes and during the summer 

suffered garden and conservatory envy of those 

working from laptops. Our WhatsApp group 

allowed us to ensure we celebrated everyone’s 

special days and showed our sense of humour. 

We work with some crazy people but we love it 

that way! 




Finance has evolved quite a bit in the past five 

years, with guest service, efficiency and the 

environment in mind. 

Changes include: 

- Setting up CELOPAY to allow online credit 

card payments for deposits 

- Moving offices, returning to join our first floor 

friends in Tilney Street 

- Installing DOCUWARE, paper-free invoice 

processing and approvals

We have had lots of successes over the last 

five years but the most notable has been the 

opening of our boutique just off the lobby at The 

Dorchester and the creation of ‘The Dorchester’ 

Rose. The success of these projects was due to 

the hard work and dedication of the team and 

our passion to create beautiful arrangements 

for our guests. We have also had so much fun 

creating especially themed displays throughout 

The Dorchester and also at Chelsea Flower Show 

which is our favourite week of the year. 



the pandemic? 

The florist team have stayed connected 

throughout the lockdown via our famous Flower 

Power group chat. We have also enjoyed picnics 

in the park, where it was great to see each other 

and share our lockdown experiences. 




The WORKING TOGETHER value best 

represents the Florist team, we work across all 

Dorchester Collection properties in London 

including our Head Office, working closely with 

nearly every department to great beautiful floral 

arrangements throughout our hotels. Whether 

it be a bud vase for a guest bathroom or the 

iconic urns in the lobby of The Dorchester, the 

same care and attention to detail is applied to 

each design. We wouldn’t be able to make our 

creations without working together as a team, it 

certainly makes things easier at 3am when we are 

constructing the flowers in the lobby! 

We have even volunteered together at a 

vaccination centre, where it was so nice to be 

a part of the fight against Covid-19 supporting 

NHS staff.

RESPECT. The reason the Front of House 

Department works as efficiently as it does is 

because when you strip the team down to its 

core fundamental attribute, it is respect for one 

another. We all care for one another and no 

matter what a co-workers position is, they are 

treated equally. A huge contributing factor to this 

respect is by simply taking the time to listen to 

each other and making each other aware that our 

voice is valued.

One of the achievements we are most proud 

of is making the Front of House department 

borderless. Our restructure introduced the 

Task Master and Host Roles which gave clarity 

and differentiation to positions that are more 

administrative based in comparison to guest 

facing. This allowed us to get on board with the 

new ‘Guest Centricity’ concept set by DC. We 

are really proud of how fast we have adapted to 

this restructure. Additionally the new ‘Concierge 

2.0’ roll is a significant achievement. This newly 

developed roll involves the concierge carrying out 

receptionist tasks too. Not only will they book 

the restaurant reservation but they are also now 

able to complete a check in and a check out for a 

guest too. More recently our Director of Front of 

House being awarded Leader of the Year for 2020 

is something we are grateful for and proud of too.

In addition to our biweekly departmental Zoom 

calls to convey new information we took part 

in multiple different activities to keep positive 

vibes throughout the department. Firstly a 

challenge known as – ‘The War of the Roses’. 

Split into two teams we had to answer riddles 

and puzzles that the answer was a landmark

in London. After solving the riddle we had to 

take a selfie by the answer. A truly great way 

to become for familiar with London! The great 

Alberto did some fun cooking demonstrations for 

us including a tiramisu dish. A WhatsApp group 

chat for both fun and learning activities was set 

up. Days of the week were allocated towards a 

different submission to the group chat. These 

submissions included SOPs, quizzes, history 

presentations. Welfare calls from Director of 

Front of House were also hugely effective.

The Grill 




We believe The Grill really represents all of our 

Dorchester Collection Values, the two that stand out 

the most to us are CREATIVITY and WORKING 

TOGETHER. Creativity with our fantastic MIY 

project started in June 2020 that continued over 

the festive period of 2020 giving our regulars and 

new guests the chance to experience a taste of The 

Grill in the comfort of their own homes. We had so 

many great comments from guests exclaiming we 

saved Christmas in such uncertain times. Working 

together has been demonstrated through our time 

in the lockdowns mostly with regular trainings not 

only with our own team but throughout the F&B 

division and beyond.

phase where we implemented the new 

concept of the restaurant to our team. Here great 

friendships were formed giving us a fantastic base 

of working together with energy and positivity

Over the last five years our department has seen 

a number of changes, the most exciting being the 

relaunch of The Grill. This consisted of a widely 

new, young and vibrant team and the beginning 

of a journey to achieving great things! Our

pandemic? 

At the beginning of the pandemic we stayed 

connected as a team through picnics, football 

in the park, and girl’s nights. As the lockdowns 

grew stricter we moved to having more virtual 

activities keeping the team connected and 

engaged, a few examples are; our weekly 

newsletter, The Grill’s Thursday night quiz, wine 

tastings, internal trainings, trainings from our 

suppliers (e.g. HG Walter), weekly 121’s, girl’s 

night. We have also had members of our team 

volunteering at Gorsefield Rural Studies Centre 

and the NHS vaccine centres in Ealing and 

Marble Arch.

The Grill Kitchen

I think we represent all Dorchester Collection’s 

values in The Grill kitchen, but the main one 

for me is PASSION, we use that word very often 

during our days and it’s the main word in our 

lives, it is what get us up early and why we give 

110% every day we work.

The refurb’ was such a massive milestone for all of 

us involved and after the physical changes to the 

restaurant is was so lovely to see the guests come to 

dine and really enjoy the food on our menu.

The hall porters and concierges are all about PASSION. No 

matter how difficult your request is our concierges are ready 

to fulfil it. No matter how heavy your luggage is, our Guest 

Services hosts will be there in moments. No matter how crazy 

the weather condition is our doormen will always welcome you 

with a smile.

What are your greatest achievements/milestones 

as a department in the last five years? 

In the last five years we managed to stand together as a team 

overcoming difficult situations like luggage pulls of over 200 

bags coming in the middle of the night, wedding receptions 

with over 100 people driving to the hotel and asking for us to 

park their cars or finding that last minute ticket to the super sold 

out concert (we still have some of those if you need them).

What did you do to stay connected as a 

team during the pandemic? 

A good laugh and a chat, Zoom meeting after Zoom meeting we 

managed to carry on through these unprecedented times. At first 

we were having separate meetings for the door team and guest 

services hosts, but in the end it became natural to just be united 

under the same big call.

Housekeeping 




1 

The Housekeeping and Laundry department 

is all about diversity and team spirit. We are the 

second largest department after F&B. We are a 

great representation of people working together 

from different culture, background and bringing 

various skills and individual talent to their role 

and to the make of the department. Our greatest 

responsibility to look after our guests, creating 

special moments, maintain our property and 

inspire each other. 




The department had several achievements 

over the years. Back in 2018 HSK has been 

awarded ‘Department of the Year 2018’. HSK 

has welcomed and mentored many graduates in 

the past years and after finishing the program 

couple of them has joined HSK to pursue their 

career further. Our room attendants had looked 

after so many famous celebrities and guests 

including Tony Bennett who stayed with us in 

the iconic and listed Oliver Messel suite. The list 

continues with Elisabeth Taylor in the Terrace, 

Harlequin and Audley suite. Celine Dion, the 

story with Celine: she visited the hotel with her 

children and we had to make the beds on the 

floor because she did not want the children to 

fall out of bed. Teresa, one of our room attendant 

who has just recently retired after working for 

the hotel 25years used to help servicing the Suri/ 

Seri and looking after royalty and PM’s. We have 

organised charity sale events in HSK and donated 

over £1,000 to various charity organisations. 



the pandemic? 

Throughout the pandemic we have managed to 

stay connected and we have had loads of fun and 

fun activities online. We had quiz night – Shot 

in the dark. Hosted a Virtual Happy Hour – 

Funniest Christmas Jumper in December 2020. 

We had a fantastic picking in Hyde Park corner 

where the team members brought food and 

drinks and we played card games and activities. 

We have celebrated Housekeeping International 

Week at the roof top of the Suri suite. 

We have supported our sister hotels, 45 Park 

Lane and Coworth Park, see photos attached. 

We kept the communication going on a weekly 

bases and created what’s up groups where the 

team members shared photos of their home 

activates, puzzling, tapestry, walking in the 

forest… Baking challenge, again sharing the 

photos on the group.

grown into a ‘family’, which lives by the moto 

‘one team one dream’. We are thoughtful in 

every action/task we do for our guests and for our 

colleagues no matter how big or small. We offer 

support to guests and colleagues alike. Making 

them smile makes our day.

In-room Dining 




1 

Closing the pantries and centralising everything 

was a big challenge, which the team mastered 

brilliantly. With the recent changes in the 

departmental leadership IRD was able to build 

a solid foundation and created a passionate and 

flexible team. 

During the last few years we have seen some 

team member’s move on to new challenges while 

new talent joined the team. This allowed us to 

inject our current knowledge with fresh energy 

and new ideas. As a family we had a very difficult 

year for numerous reasons, during which one of 

our members needed all our support. For the 

team it was the most natural thing to step up and 

organise daily lunches for his family for months 

on end. This unconditional support is the biggest 

achievement of all.

The team’s wellbeing was and is the main 

concern for our team. We look at ourselves as one 

family. The team has come alive within our new 

WhatsApp group and they are looking forward to 

our regular coffee chats/meetings/training. Seeing 

each other gives everyone a chance to catch up 

with each other while providing the latest updates 

on any departmental or hotel’s information. On top 

of these things Yogesh calls each team member 

regularly in person for a personalised catch up. As 

result of that Yogesh received a personal video to 

show our appreciation.

Laundry and Valet 




PASSION is our biggest value we represent as 

a team in the laundry department! We have a 

majority of long serving team which shows us 

their passion and commitment. 




Our greatest achievement is to have completely 

refurbished the laundry! We are so proud of that 

and it really helps us to operate smoothly. 

We are also very proud to have the biggest 

possible score on the ‘Your View’ with 100%! 

Nevertheless, if we can skip pandemic year, 

five years ago we achieved the best sales of 

one million.

During the pandemic we had an extra time to get 

to know each other better, we have learned more 

about each other’s family and hobbies. We had 

a biggest walk ever in Richmond Park which is 

really a day to remember! We have also supported 

different departments which was highly

- Training sessions for chefs in the kitchen with 

our local suppliers 

- Masterclasses for all of the dishes in the menu. 

- Training in food cost and food pricing, recipe 

formatting. 

- International cook-off masterclasses 

- Supporting Manorfield Primary School 

- Monthly departmental to give updates on hotel 

operations and business. 

- Running hotel-wide Zoom call competitions 

covering; pizza-making, cake-making, pancake 

day, cookies and many more. 

In addition, as part of our We Care initiatives we 

have made regular welfare calls to the whole team.

CREATIVITY runs through the veins of all of 

us in Marcomms and has to be at the heart of 

everything we do. It’s our job to come up with 

fun and innovative ideas to get people talking 

about our incredible hotels and to ensure they 

stand out from the competition. We thrive 

on coming up with fabulously creative new 

initiatives to ultimately help drive business. We 

admit, sometimes we let our imaginations run a 

little too wild and beyond the realms of reality, 

but that’s the fun of it and ‘no idea is off the 

table’ is our motto.

From a branding and marketing side, we’ve 

ensured that our bank of imagery has grown 

enormously meaning the way we present the 

hotel via our online platforms and printed 

collateral is truly beautiful and representative 

of the brand. As a test of our application of the 

brand guidelines, we have passed the annual 

collateral audit with flying colours each year. Our 

social media presence has increased dramatically 

with a combined following of over 225k followers

March 2021). We’ve also had the chance to 

get involved with so many fun and innovative 

initiatives and a few that really stand out are the 

opening of Parcafé in 2017, relaunching The Grill 

in 2019, and launching The Dorchester Rose at 

the start of 2020.

We’ve stayed busy during the pandemic, 

supporting the operational teams at all three 

hotels with messaging, and ensuring that we 

stayed front of mind for guests, clients, and 

followers throughout, despite the restrictions on 

business activity. As a team, we’ve met on Zoom 

every week to go through the latest updates 

and always to have a good chat too. Our very 

own archivist on the team, Chris, decided to see 

what he could find out about the history of The 

Dorchester and ended up delivering over 100 

presentations to audiences that included The 

Dorchester team members, the Berkeley Square 

team, our global Comms agencies and the RSOs. 

The geographical reach was from Brazil to Japan! 

He unearthed lots of interesting facts and his 

legendary history webinars affectionately became 

known as ‘ChrisTV’. We can’t wait to be back on 

site at our beautiful hotel all together one day as 

we love bouncing ideas off each other in person.

The challenge of Parcafé since opening its doors 

five years ago, was to join the highly competitive, 

fast paced and ever-changing coffee-shop market 

of Mayfair, without compromising the five-star 

experience, which The Dorchester is recognised 

for. It is thanks to our training and PASSION that 

this has been achieved. Our passion is reflected 

in our attention to details, in creating high quality 

hot drinks and delivering a bespoke service to

We have succeeded in creating our own business, 

rather than taking over an existing one. This was 

achieved by our unique brand. Over the years we 

have established a regular and ever-growing loyal

food and beverage, along with our friendly 

atmosphere. This has helped Parcafé in becoming 

part of the local community. 

We have seen our profit grow year on year, showing 

that we have managed despite the increasing 

competition in the area, to establish a thriving, 

recognised and popular business.

the pandemic? 

Parcafé is one of the smallest departments within 

the Collection. Erik and I, as the only members 

of the team have worked together, in a well 

organised and creative way, respecting each 

other and appreciating each other’s personalities. 

During the lockdowns, we stayed connected by 

weekly video calls and social network. We are 

both looking forward to working as a team again.

The key value that we can say is our focus is

Our department works around the clock and we 

coordinate with several other sections. 

We design and prepare the highest quality of 

pastries for the teams that look after our afternoon 

tea guests, in-room dining, banqueting, bakery, 

Parcafé. On occasions we even supply tasty treats 

to sales who take them out to our local travel 

agents, PAs and concierge companies.

The Dorchester afternoon tea in Brunei which 

was done by our two team members for three 

weeks doing up to 5,000 covers, as well was a 

great honour for The Dorchester culinary team 

to participate in The Sultan of Brunei golden 

jubilee serving royals from all part of the world. 

We started serving afternoon tea at Chelsea 

Flower Show in 2017, was one of the highlights in 

London afternoon tea market. Successfully done 

two continuous years bringing lot of guests to 

the hotel. The Dorchester was one of the highly 

recommended places for Christmas afternoon tea 

in 2019 by Vogue. As pastry kitchen is one of the 

busiest kitchen in the building it was a dream to 

build a new pastry kitchen. Last year the dream 

came true with our management team to approve 

the project and there we have one of the best 

pastry production kitchens in London with a selfmotivated 

team.

During the pandemic we have managed to stay 

well connected through the use of technology. 

Since the beginning the exchange of information 

has been fundamental to face up the new reality 

of Covid-19. The training online, video calls 

and chats helped the whole team to improve 

professionally and keep connected to the 

workplace. The motivation has been key and 

helped to build a strong relationship within the 

department during this time.

Its hard to pick one in People & Culture as we 

love all values and really live them every day 

in what we do – which is looking after all of 

you! If we had to choose one value it would be 

PASSION, as our whole team is so passionate 

about creating an amazing place to work for each 

and every Dorchester employee, and we are so 

proud of everything we do. 



the pandemic? 

The pandemic was challenging for all of us, but it 

was also an opportunity for our People & Culture 

team to think differently and continue to place 

our people at the centre. As a team we did so 

much! From online HIT sessions to a virtual 

murder mystery, creativity flowed from each of us 

to keep us connected throughout the pandemic.

We are very proud of our achievements from the 

past five years. We took it up a notch with our 

staff parties, taking everyone to the circus, Vegas, 

Hollywood and beyond for our Winter Balls, and 

we also took to the seas for our new summer 

boat party. Our People & Culture team have also 

achieved numerous award including: HR Team of 

the Year 2017, Global Talent Attraction Strategy 

2018, London Healthy Workplace and several 

recognitions with the Caterer Best Places to work. 

One of the things we are most proud is our 

partnership with Manorfield Primary School, 

which started in 2019. Together with the school 

we have managed to raise over £16,000 in funds 

to help them complete their teaching kitchen, 

restock the school’s library and help fund the 

food distribution scheme to support over 1,000 

families throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. We 

have also helped to support the school and their 

newly acquired education centre by encouraging 

over 100 employees to volunteer throughout 

2020. 

We also focused on communication and 

engagement as key priorities for our people, 

launching DC Legends in 2018, achieving the 

highest engagement score ever of 9.2 in 2020 and 

prioritising mental health and wellbeing and 

putting our people at the centre of all we do.

The Promenade

We are extremely lucky in The Promenade to 

have such a large, diverse and amazing team as 

this allows us to demonstrate all five Dorchester 

Collection values on a daily basis. We are a big 

team who continually works with each other in 

high pressure and busy situations it is imperative 

that we always have RESPECT towards each 

other. Being the outlet that is described as the 

heart and soul of the hotel means we are an 

extremely busy department with lots of guests 

to look after! By WORKING TOGETHER 

as a team we deliver that flawless service/ 

experience to our guests. To ensure that we do 

deliver the flawless service, our team needs to 

be passionate about what they do. The guests 

experience wouldn’t be as incredible and world 

renowned if the team didn’t have the PASSION 

for what they were doing! The PERSONALITY 

of each individual is one of the strengths of 

The Promenade. We have countless regular 

guests who return time after time so they can be 

looked after by that team player they have built 

a relationship with over the years! Personality 

plays a huge role in this but so do the other 

values mentioned above. We have seen a massive 

amount of CREATIVITY from our team in the 

last year due to Covid. The innovative idea’s 

they have come up with for our weekly meetings 

and team buildings arising during the lockdowns 

have all been amazing and so have the ideas they 

have brought to the table for how we operate 

in our ‘new normal’ environment. These ideas 

on how we can operate have helped us create a 

safe working environment and also a safe and 

enjoyable environment for our guests.

The team has won the certificate of excellence 

award year on year for the afternoon tea service, 

Danny Mook won the Trainer of the Year Award 

in 2016, the team has gelled and worked towards 

exceeding the budget in the month of December 

2018 and October – December 2019, some 

spectacular sales took place in the department 

thanks to the training program that has been 

intensified, the introduction of incentives and 

the relationship created with certain guests 

was key, the team survey score had the greatest 

improvement in October 2019.

the pandemic? 

At the beginning of the pandemic we created a 

WhatsApp group so we could all stay in touch 

and share updates as we got them. Throughout 

the year the team has shared pictures, celebrated 

birthdays and also cheered for the milestones 

which they reached in their roles. We had 

weekly Zoom calls to catch up as a team, these 

were crucial as quite a lot of the team live by 

themselves. The importance of these weekly 

group get-togethers can’t be underestimated as it 

gave everyone friendly faces to see! We also held 

different training sessions, enjoyed pub quizzes 

together and had a few ‘Happy Hours’ to start 

the weekend. Our team have worked together 

for a long time and get on very well so they did 

also call each other to check they were ok during 

the course of the pandemic. The Promenade 

management team reached out to us on a weekly 

and sometimes daily basis to the team to keep 

a close eye on their health and wellbeing.

PASSION. The Purchasing team has evolved 

significantly during the three recent lockdowns, 

and is set to emerge as a leaner, keener and 

cleaner operation. We are passionate about 

improving our efficiency and achieving 

consistently high standards. We are passionate 

about delivering a good service for all 

departments at The Dorchester and 45 Park 

Lane, providing support and train as best we can. 

We are passionate about maintaining the high 

standards of cleanliness and hygiene, established 

during the pandemic. We are passionate about 

what we do. Our activities touch every aspect 

of hotel operations and we want that passion to 

shine through everywhere.

Delalonde arrived, with the multitude of

Our team went through something of an evolution 

during the pandemic. We lost five team members 

and welcomed the return of Tatjana from 

maternity leave and Dominic from the graduate 

program. That is a turnover of almost 50% 

At times, we have been working together in small 

or medium sized groups in the hotel, but our 

entire team had not met together for almost a 

year now. 

Throughout this period, we have never lost touch. 

Team Zooms, either serious or frivolous have been 

our main lifeline, but there have been countless 

phone calls and smaller group chats as well.

Sales 




All of the Dorchester Collection values are 

at the heart of what Sales, Marketing Team 

does, however we believe that PASSION, 

and WORKING TOGETHER are the ones 

leading our team spirit daily. Last year taught 

us a lot about agility and adaptability and 

we could not have been happier to show 

our support to the company by bringing our 

values to support other departments.

Many of the team have been with us for the past 

five years, which makes us proud of growing and 

developing colleagues within our department. 

Tenacity and determination is strong amongst 

us and certainly helped us in achieving the best 

results in the history of The Dorchester in 2018 

for both transient and group sector, which was 

incredible! Marketing and Communications took 

on refreshing our website and launching new 

campaigns including re-launch of The Grill with 

their own Instagram page that was also a great 

success. We take each day and try to make the 

most of it: from a site inspection (we brought a 

car into the ballroom to help client visualise the 

event with us), Instagram post to fabulous events 

we get to host our clients. In the end, whenever 

we see clients returning to us and rebooking their 

events/stays, we consider it a great achievement.

We are grateful we have had our leader available 

throughout hosting Monday - Friday 10 am Zoom 

call as well as weekly updates every Thursday 

mainly for us to gather and talk, ask questions 

and most importantly see each other. We have 

also had plenty of fun on departmental Bingo 

and Charades calls (with winners receiving care 

packages via post) and joining events organised 

by People & Culture team e.g. Boot camp 

with Simon, pub quiz, book club and various 

masterclasses. We didn’t let the time slip without 

us learning something new either and worked 

on multiple projects around the hotel and 

department (painting the corridors, finalising 

CCD project etc.), joined revenue focus group 

and followed updates on everyone markets on a 

weekly flash report.

Security 




Working Together immediately springs to mind! 

As a department, we welcomed team members 

from several departments to assist us in keeping 

the hotel and our guest’s safe during the several 

lockdowns we have experienced. With flexibility 

and creative thinking put to the test during the 

last year of lockdowns and semi openings, the 

Security Department strives to, as always work 

as a team, look after one another during these 

testing times and celebrate the victories achieved 

by The Dorchester and 45 Park Lane.

the Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade 

or London Ambulance Service in emergencies, 

assisting guests and staff members whenever an 

incident or accident occurs or keeping a watchful 

eye in the lobby, we strive to be of service to all 

staff and guests of the hotel. The work put in 

behind the scenes has culminated in the delivery 

and roll out of the most up to date and current 

procedures within the Security Department 

and the hotel as a whole for the last decade. This 

however is merely the beginning of the road for 

the department and stay tuned for more to follow!

The last 12 months at The Dorchester has 

galvanised the Security Department into what 

it is today! A lot of the work carried out by the 

team is done out of the public eye and in many 

ways the eyes of team members at the hotel. 

And it is here where the magic and the hard 

work take place that binds us as a team and as a 

department. Whether it is escorting celebrities/ 

politicians around the building out of sight of

We as a Security department worked throughout 

the pandemic that started in March 2020. As a 

department, we pride ourselves on holding the 

fort whilst our colleagues are not here. In many 

ways, it has been a blessing in disguise. Being 

able to see members of the team regularly made 

sure that we as individuals had the opportunity 

to talk to one another when at work. Social 

interaction is very much a human trait, and in 

many respects where the rest of the world suffered 

due to a lack of interaction, we as a department 

had the chance to catch up and even get to know 

one another better, as not only staff members 

working at The Dorchester, but as people.

‘WE CARE’ runs in our veins at The Dorchester 

spa. Whilst we live all the values, we are most 

proud of RESPECT. We all originate from 

various places in the world and have various 

amounts of experience. Spa teams are naturally 

sensitive souls and with that, comes intuition and 

empathy. Our aim is to make sure everyone feels 

comfortable at work so that they can perform 

well at their job and let their skills shine. We 

encourage every team member to check their 

colleagues are ok, both in the spa and in the rest 

of the hotel.

Understanding our guests and marrying up 

their needs with our skilled therapists has been 

a highlight for us. It is wonderful to hear the 

fantastic feedback from guests when they leave 

the spa and then rebook with their favourite 

therapist. By listening to our guests needs, 

the team have achieved some record breaking 

Valmont retail sales. We have also promoted 

various team members to more challenging roles 

so that they can develop their skills. Our team 

have helped out at The Spa at Coworth Park and 

The Spa at Mayfair Park Residences. They have 

also done a phenomenal job in adapting to how 

we operate in light of the pandemic. They have 

adopted our ‘new normal’ with ease and have 

continued to delight our guests.

Our skin care suppliers provided remote training 

courses and we also received training from other 

skin care houses such as ESPA and Nature Bisse. 

We meet each team member individually each 

week by WhatsApp which has really allowed 

us to get to know each other even better. Our 

weekly team meetings have been great fun too. 

We have had a number of quizzes, shared our 

baby photos as well as our first day at school 

photos. Bingo always made us laugh and Mario 

helped judge a pizza making competition. We 

even danced together – The Twist and Reaching 

for the Stars!

We continued working during the pandemic, 

which enabled us to get to know each other 

better. Our managers have called every staff 

member two to three times per week, we also 

used our WhatsApp group to keep in touch.

Completely overhauling the complete IT 

infrastructure, culture and methodology – all 

whilst keeping everything running at the same 

time. This takes a great deal of planning and 

creativity and a willingness of every team 

member to invest in the new vision of IT that’s 

been adopted. The enforced transition of 200+ 

colleagues to working remotely in a matter of a 

few days leading up to lockdown 1.0, cemented 

the belief that nothing is impossible.

WORKING TOGETHER – Three hotels, one 

residence, 500+ users, 2,000+ assets – one team. 

It takes an enormous amount of collaboration, 

communication and teamwork to keep all of 

these moving parts in harmony. This team 

epitomises our ‘Working Together’ value. 

We have worked continually throughout the 

pandemic and have actually been busier than 

ever, trying to perform as many disruptive 

tasks as possible, with the opportunity of 

the hotels being closed. We have religiously 

met virtually twice a week to discuss plans, 

projects, team wellbeing and generally 

keeping the team together. These calls 

often last around two hours, so everyone has 

ample opportunity to participate and put 

forward their opinions. Long may this practice 

continue – but hopefully face-to-face soon!
