Ralston Home Gets
Makeover for Ian
Steve and Sue Ralston are honoring Veterans
Day this year by remodeling their rural home
outside Waterloo, for a very special Iowa veteran.
The Ralstons are adding a wheelchair-accessible
bedroom on their ground floor, renovating their
dining room into a state-of-the-art rehabilitation
center and converting their own bedroom into a
living room. They’re hopeful these rooms will be
finished by Christmas when their son, Ian Ralston,
a 25-year-old U.S. Army combat medic, may be
able to come home.
Ian remains at the Spinal Cord Injury Center at
the Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Minneapolis.
He was hospitalized after injuries suffered in May
when he was hit by an improvised explosive device
(IED) blast in Iraq. While on convoy in his Stryker
armored vehicle, Ian was severely injured and is
now paralyzed from the neck down, requiring a
ventilator to help him breathe. His sister Emerald
and his girlfriend Nicole Sanders are part of the
team providing around-the-clock care.
Emerald was serving in Afghanistan with
the U.S. Air Force when her brother was injured.
Her chain of command immediately flew her to
Landstuhl, Germany, where she met her brother
and has been with him ever since. She received a
hardship discharge so she can be a permanent part
of Ian’s health care team.
“We’re on schedule to bring Ian home on Dec.
21,” Steve, himself a veteran, said. “Serendipitously,
Spirit of West Fork
Elementary-Sheffield
The “Spirit Program” is designed to assist families
during the holiday season. Our communities have
many families with young children that are in need
and the Spirit Program committee is asking for your
support to make this year’s event successful. They
are asking for money donations and/or volunteers
to help with shopping.
The committee has appreciated your support
during previous years and know this community
will be very supportive again this year. They look
forward to working with you to help local children
experience the Magic of the Holiday Season and the
warmth of their community.
The committee has sent out applications
to families and will have those returned by
Wednesday, Nov. 17. Recipients were asked to
list their children’s clothing sizes and needs. If
donations exceed the requested items for this
year, they will apply the remaining funds toward
the Little Warhawk Elementary Fund to support
the needs of elementary school students and
elementary programs.
“Giving Tree” ornaments will be prepared by
Tuesday, Nov. 23. The committee would appreciate
having all the gifts turned into the school by
W.F. Board Continues
Superintendent Debate
By Travis Fischer
The West Fork School Board met for a special
work session on Wednesday, Nov. 10 to come up
with a strategy for determining who will be the
superintendent of the new West Fork school district.
The meeting was moderated by Dr. Troyce Fisher,
the Director of Cohesive Leadership Systems of the
School Administrators of Iowa, who was invited
to help the board determine what they want in a
superintendent.
The two primary candidates for the position are
the current superintendents of the SCMT and R-S
districts, Darrin Strike and Tom Fey. At the meeting,
board member Mary Ingham suggested that the
board members sit down with each superintendent.
“To me, it seems we’re selecting an employee
without a job interview,” said Ingham. “That just
seems weird.”
Along with discussing which superintendent
would be chosen to stay on at West Fork, serious
consideration was given to board member Mary
Schlichting’s suggestion of opening interviews.
The question at that point became whether or
not to keep one of the current superintendents or
hiring an interim for the position.
“I just feel we need someone to come in fresh,”
said Schlichting.
Board member Rob Heimbuch also noted that
the choice of West Fork superintendent is one of the
last major ‘us vs. them’ decisions to be made as the
SCMT and R-S districts come together, and that an
interim superintendent would clear that hurdle for
both communities.
The discussion about bringing in a new person
continued as the board considered whether
or not they would be looking for a temporary
superintendent to get the district up and running
or somebody to take the position permanently.
The pros and cons of a new face were weighed
by the board, noting that a new superintendent
would be more free to work on West Fork business
without also maintaining one of the two existing
districts. However, the board realized that even
a new superintendent won’t be able to avoid the
community divisions and with the retirement of
both board secretaries the new district would have
no administrators familiar with the processes of the
school.
Putting aside that issue for the moment, the board
moved on to determining the criteria for what they
were looking for in a superintendent, either new or
old. The board created a list of qualities they would
like to see in the person they hire, prioritizing
abilities to perform school business and setting a
high standard for student achievement.
Once determining what they wanted to see in a
superintendent, the board went back to discussing
how to decide who would get the position.
Ultimately, the board decided that they would
again try to come to an agreement on either of the
two existing superintendents at the next meeting.
If a consensus cannot be made, then the board will
begin the interview process.
The next meeting well be held on November 19
at 5:00 in Rockwell.
Editorial
Congrats Seth!
Few have the ability to
capitalize on talent
as much as you
have the past three years
West Fork’s Seth Tuttle signed
a letter of intent to play at the
University of Northern Iowa
last Thursday afternoon. A day
earlier, we had a chance to visit
with Seth about an upcoming
feature. During that time Seth
turned the attention from himself
to his teammates.
He’s set reasonable
expectations while pushing his
teammates all along. The 6’9”
senior will once again be a leader
on the floor this winter, but a
leader off the floor no matter
what he accomplishes.
He’s a perfect example of
someone everyone can appreciate
and respect. He’s worked hard
for his accolades, but rather than
cherish them, he’d rather share
them with the 14 other guys who
take the floor with him every day
in practice.
Congratulations Seth on your
upcoming season!
Frances
Rodemeyer, 94
Frances Rodemeyer,94 of Sheffield, died
Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010 at the Muse Norris Hospice
Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held Friday at the First
United Methodist Church in Sheffield. Interment
was at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.
Frances Lucile was born Jan. 3, 1916 in Sheffield,
the first child of David and Minnie (Ingebretson)
Atkinson. She grew up on the family farm south
of Sheffield with her two brothers, Richard and
George, and sister, Jane, and was educated in
Sheffield. After attending State Teachers College
in Cedar Falls for two years, she returned to
Sheffield to teach in a one-room country school.
Fran returned to college, majored in math and
business, and graduated with a B.S. degree from
Grinnell College in 1939. On Aug. 14, 1949, Frances
married Milo B. Rodemeyer, son of Dr. Frederick
and Sophia Rodemeyer of Sheffield. They moved to
Minneapolis, Minn., where Janet was born. When
Milo left to serve in the United States Navy in World
War II, Fran and Janet moved to Sheffield to be with
family. After the war, Fran and Milo made Sheffield
their home, where David and Joan where born. The
loss of Milo in 1959 left her alone to raise her family
and care for Milo’s parents. Fran was a dedicated
parent to her three children, supporting their
academic, athletic, music and church activities. Her
association with faculty and students during the
fourteen years she served as secretary to the high
school principal added to her school involvement.
Frances was an active citizen of the community. She
worked on the planning committee for the present
day Methodist Church, was a member of United
Methodist Women and taught Sunday School. Fran
enjoyed PEO, Eastern Star, InterNos Study Club,
and the Library Foundation. She helped in the
planning and building of the new, present library.
Fran enjoyed traveling the world, including many
lakes, rivers and countries of most continents. She
liked preparing meals and baking for family and
friends. The 32 winters she spent in her Florida
home allowed her to enjoy golf and bridge all year.
Having lived a long life, she was able to care
for her mother and be an important part of her
grandchildren and great grandchildren’s lives. Her
family was always her focus and support.
that is also Nicole’s birthday so it’s going to be a
huge gift for all of us.”
Moving forward
“We knew we had to do something to get ready
for Ian’s return,” Steve said. The Cedar Falls
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) chapter sprang
into action to help the Ralstons. “We talked to a
few people and they began making calls about our
plans,” Steve said.
One of those calls made by veterans groups
on behalf of Ian, was to Cordell Burton, product
qualification manager for Pella Corporation.
“I was contacted by the Iowa military mother
who helps out the parents of wounded soldiers,”
Burton said. “Pella and my team were among the
many who donated time or products to help out.”
Pella Corporation partnered with the non-profit
Homes for Our Troops and the VFW organization
in Cedar Falls, to help build the room addition
and renovate the dining room and bedroom. Pella
Corporation donated four two-wide composite
energy-efficient ProLine® windows, an accessible
door and two other windows.
“Pella values the tremendous sacrifices veterans
make to maintain America’s freedom,” said Pella
Spokesperson Kathy Krafka Harkema. “That’s
why we’re pleased to partner with Homes for
Our Troops and the Cedar Falls VFW to help
make the Ralston’s home more accessible for Ian’s
homecoming. The energy-efficient Pella windows
will help keep the family comfortable in the rugged
Waterloo winters and sizzling summers. Plus, the
accessible door will make it easier for Ian to enter
and exit the family home.”
Call to arms
Burton shared the Ralston’s story with his team
members at Pella — who wanted to help with
monetary donations and the product installations.
In late October, Burton and teammate Pat Mink,
engineering specialist at Pella, helped install the
windows in Ian’s bedroom. A Pella doublewide
West Fork Honors
Veterans
By Travis Fischer
The West Fork school district honored area
veterans on Thursday with special Veteran’s Day
ceremonies at both the high school and middle
school.
In Sheffield, area veterans were honored with
an early morning ceremony at the West Fork High
School. The high school band performed “Star
Spangled Banner” and Pastor Ken Livingston
gave the invocation. Dick Brown introduced guest
speaker Kielan Sullivan, who spoke about his
experience as a Boys’ State representative.
After performances by the high school band and
the girls chorus, the firing squad gave their salute
to the fallen veterans to the melody of “Taps.”
Later in Rockwell, the 8 th grade social studies
class put on a program for their local soldiers.
Cheyenne Liekweg welcomed the audience while
Payton Twedt led the Pledge of Allegiance. The
Invocation was given by Britta Becker and Siera
Jeffrey presented a history of Veteran’s Day.
Several 8 th graders read poetry at the ceremony.
Laura Thorson recited the poem ‘Remember,’
Stephanie Hanig read ‘What is a Veteran,’ and
Taryn Meyer performed “Heroes Die For Me.”
Music was provided by the middle school band,
Celeste Staudt on piano, and vocalists Nicole
Helmers and Jacee Arbegast.
Cody Whitney gave recognition to the veterans
attending the program before introducing his
father, guest-speaker Rick Whitney.
Whitney spoke to both the veterans and the
children about his time overseas and what it really
means to serve your country, both the good and the
bad.
The program was concluded with “Taps” played
by Nicole Helmers and Joseph Jackson and closing
remarks by Taylor Rooney.
Sheffield, Iowa
By: Ned Bohach
Monday morning and the troops were anxious to
get their battle plans for the day…well it was noon
but that’s early for us. General Severe addressed this
demotic group with a saccade glance. Men, oh it’s
nice to be called that, today you must control your
palpitating desire to win and play with grace and
beauty, tee-hee if that could ever happen. Whatever
that word usage means, it’s beyond me for sure.
Okay so we drew platoons, assigned commanders
to each and were off like a herd of turtles, whatta
sight that was. Marvin Kramer & Marlys of course,
moved back in his childhood stomping grounds,
well maybe Chapin was more like it, chasing girls,
joined us for his inaugural voyage. Well that’s what
Dean Peter told me, in fact he said Marvin led him
waaaay astray and he’s never been the same since.
You’ll have to ask those two about that, cuz I don’t
wanna know.
Okay back to the battle. Tom Severe, Dallas Slagle
& Frank Schnoes fired a 76 to place 1st. They earned
themselves a free archery lesson from Robin Hood
III. They have been driving around looking for
Sherwood Forest to no avail, they should invest in
a GSP system. Second place honors found Doug
Siems, John Hartman and Jim Saylor firing a 79.
Hartman’s clubs had cobwebs, old caked on dirt
and smelly grips and folks that are the way he
played. Welcome back John! Third place and in
the money were Barney Dougherty, Bill Nolte and
Marv Kramer with an 80. Since Marv is a rookie he
had to be initiated and jump into the pond on #9
and forfeit his $50 earnings for the win. Oh folks
don’t fret, that’s all just some Bohemian tall tale…
like you didn’t know that. Actually, they won a
chance to ride the B & O Railroad to Chapin and
Aredale, if they can find the depot.
My platoon was rather rank (no pun intended)
in udder woids…ve stunketh…shot an 82, that
be Dean Peter, Rog Birdsall and yours truly. Oh it
was ugly, nasty, gruesome and repulsive it was. We
hit many riders, that’s when you hit your ball and
you don’t have to ride to hit your next shot. Last
place finishers were even uglier than our platoon
and they shot an uffda putrid 91, yes that’s right
folks 91. I do believe non-golfers could shoot that.
Gary Nelson, Bob Shreckengost and Roger Madsen
comprised that group, oh me oh my are they bad
or are they bad. Oh well they were bad enuff to
be in the money as 1st, 3rd & 5th won some cold
hard cash. Those guys, for finishing last each won
a trophy that was found in a hog lot. Okay thus
ended Monday’s trail of ugliness and deforming
the word “golf.” We decided to play Tuesday as the
season is about at the end…thus I shall proceed to
Just Talkin’...By J.Z.
Not much new and exciting
this week. And sometimes that’s a
good thing! Had a rush job that I
didn’t know was a rush job! Said I
had plenty of time to do it. (Never
tell a printer that!) And then . . .
they needed it tomorrow! Luckily I
had done most of the work already.
Just a couple of hours and it would
be completed. That was Thursday
. . . and the completed job still sits
on my table (Monday). One thing
I learned early in this place . . .
never put off until tomorrow what
you can do today. Put it off and
you will regret it! And I’ve learned
that lesson more than once! Like I
said: it’s something different every
week. I wouldn’t have it any other
way!
Home . . . an uneventful week
there, too! Wednesday evening
we did drive to Altoona and
celebrated the little one’s first
birthday. It was worth the drive to
see her eat her first piece of cake!
What a mess! Sunday I returned to
Altoona to spend more time with
her and her mother, as Nic was in
Keokuk on Army business. And
this Saturday Little Lid will have
a party with relatives and friends
in honor of her first birthday. She
likes my necklace . . . but really
doesn’t pull on it. She just waits
until I tell her no . . . and quicker
than you can blink you eye . . . she’s
got my glasses. She’s gettin’ faster,
and I’m gettin’ slower! I think I
cleaned her little fingerprints off
them three times Sunday. I love it!
This week its time to get the old
cars, lawnmower, and motorcycle
ready for winter. I heard it’s
coming! I’m pretty sure the last
ride for this year on the bike has
been taken! Be good, Kids! It’s
Showtime!
NOV. 18, 2010 PAGE FIVE
Sheffield Press, Sheffield, IA
that chapter right now.
Tuesday found us back at battle beginning at
noon, good thing we didn’t wait for the noon
whistle. We were sixteen strong, weapons polished,
loaded and eager to conquer whoever got in our
way. General Severe informed us that it could be
our last outing due to the weather, oh folks you
should have heard and seen the 16 oldster weep, cry
and sulk. They sounded like the Vienna Boys Choir
they did. “Okay men, have at it,” was the General’s
command so we all mounted up put the pedal to the
medal and off we went with screeching, smoking
tires. There was a cry of “Geronimo” which echoed
across the land. Tom Severe, Jim Dorenkamp, Marv
Kramer and Rog Birdsall finished as champions
with a 71. Word has it Jim Dorenkamp used Tom
Severe’s driver on one hole, okay folks now that’s a
pure no-no and should have placed them last after
the penalty. Their prize of three $100 gift certificates
at the Roy Rogers Club in Torrance, CA had to be
used by yesterday and shucks there were four guys
in that group...oh well too bad Marv, newcomers
out! Okay then right in there, second place went
to Bob Siems, Barney Dougherty, Gary Nelson and
Duane Dorenkamp with a 72 pretty dang good for
an old garbage guy, old farmer guy, young old shop
teacher guy and another older farmer guy. I mean
folks there was combining, corn, beans and tall tales
of who got the most corn per bushel. Bob and Gary
just slept through it all. Third place honors and a
prize winner was the group of Dallas Slagle, Dean
Peter, Jerry Rabey (how’d he get in there?) and Rog
Madsen with a 75. Dallas-boy held the group up as
he kept looking for lost balls in the fescue, Dean-boy
kept hitting his shots into the fescue for Dallas-boy,
Jerry-boy had to walk and carry their bags as he is
a rookie and Rog-boy kept score to make sure they
won something. Well that something amounted to
walk through of Sukup Manufacturing on Sunday,
a free hard hat, and a free lunch, oh shuckees that’s
right they aren’t open on Sunday, don’t give out
hard hats and they don’t serve lunch. Well boys
there is always next year.
I think that’s about it for this year, oh-oh that’s
right there were four groups, I shan’t leave them
out…or ahhhh, I wish I could as it was my group
which consisted of Billy Bob Nolte, Franky Bob
Schnoes, Bobby Bob Shreckengost and Neddy Bob
Bohach with a 77, We couldn’t have hit the ocean if
we were throwing peas. Well don’t bother sending
me any sympathy cards, it might crush their ego’s.
Okay if this ends our season, our salute and hat’s
off to Jerry Rabey and his crew (Donna, Linda,
Dallas & Sean) for an outstanding job of keeping
our facility nothing short of awesome each day. We
also thank Traci and Jamie for putting up with us
in the club house, they are very tolerant and sweet
towards these grumpy old men, and well I’m not
one of those…tee-hee! Anyway special thanks to
Jim and Diane to whom we owe it all, we consider
ourselves very fortunate to have this super facility.
As day light saving time has passed us by once
again, it is dark so I must hit the sack. Until we meet
again, remember life is easy, it’s the dang people
that make it difficult. Oh yes before Norman left he
said in dog years he should be dead. From all of us
old GEEZERS…sleep tight golf clubs, golf balls and
golf carts see ya in the spring. A geezer—a nounslang..not
young, not dead, somewhere in between
PS—I hope none of my articles get syndicated
because then I’d get paid, become famous and have
to move from Sheffield and then what would you
all have to read???? Oh shucks I’d never do that,
Bob Shreck would cry and cry and cry…so there
I’m staying!! PS—the nicest thing about the future
it starts tomorrow!
