FAMILY HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEETHOVENAssistant Director for a production of Wagner’sTannhäuser in Tirana, Albania, a production inwhich he also sang the role of Wolfram.WILLIAM SHOMOS, NARRATORWilliam Shomos, guest actor, is the RichardH. Larson Distinguished Professor of Music(Voice) and Director of Opera at the University ofNebraska-Lincoln. There he has staged a widevariety of productions ranging from traditionalfaire (The Marriage of Figaro, La Bohème) toworld premieres and new works (O Pioneers(White), Dead Man Walking (Heggie), and AWedding (Bolcom)). His staging of Tyler White’sO Pioneers received regional and nationalacclaim and was aired on Nebraska EducationalTelevision (NETV). His productions of Dead ManWalking, Così fan tutte, and Street Scene wonfirst place in the National Opera Association’sOpera Production Competition.As a singer, Mr. Shomos has performednumerous leading baritone roles includingMarcello in La Bohème, Captain Corcoran inH.M.S. Pinafore, and the title role in SweeneyTodd. In 2006, he appeared as a faculty artistwith UNL Opera’s production of The Most HappyFella featured at the Waterford InternationalFestival of Light Opera in Waterford, Ireland,where Shomos was awarded “Best Male Singer”for his portrayal of Tony Esposito. As a recitalist,Mr. Shomos toured throughout the country as apart of internationally-renowned accompanistJohn Wustman’s project to present the CompleteSongs of Franz Schubert. In 2010, he performedWinterreise with Wustman at UNL. In 1999, hesang a performance of the Complete MörikeSongs of Hugo Wolf, which the Omaha WorldHerald declared to be a “toweringaccomplishment that will stand as one of theregion’s musical high points of the year and eventhe decade.” Recent oratorio work includes thebaritone roles in Ein deutsches Requiem,Messiah, and Elijah. William Shomos holdsdegrees from the University of Illinois (DMA),Northwestern University (MM), and Knox College(BA).Mr. Shomos has staged several works withPensacola Opera and Nevada Opera. Between2003 and 2005, Shomos spent three seasonswith the Des Moines Metro Opera as stagedirector in the company’s Apprentice Artistprogram, while also assistant directingmainstage productions. Between 2006 and2009, he directed productions with La MusicaLirica in Novafeltria, Italy. Shomos has alsodirected outreach programs for both the DesMoines Metro Opera and Opera Omaha.From 2011 to 2013, Mr. Shomos returnedto the Des Moines Metro Opera to direct theApprentice Artist Program.
