Headteacher’s Welcome
I am proud to be the Headteacher of East Bergholt High School (EBHS).
At EBHS we aim to ensure that all children who attend the school are happy and
successful. To achieve this, we believe that our students have the right to:
• the very best teachers who have access to high quality professional development;
• a world class curriculum that is tailored to their individual needs; and
• a safe and secure environment in which they can thrive.
EBHS has all of these ingredients. The combination of academic progress and character built from engaging
in activities beyond the classroom, ensures that our students flourish and enjoy success in the future.
At EBHS, we work together to build a stronger community by:
• Being kind and positive.
• Celebrating and embracing diversity.
• Aspiring to be the best we can be.
If you would like to find out more about the school, please take the opportunity to attend one of our regular
Open Mornings, these include a tour of the School, with the opportunity to visit classrooms and talk to students.

A place to grow and learn
At East Bergholt High School, we believe that every student should have access to a curriculum that
provides them with the opportunity for growth. We believe that our academic curriculum enables students
to gain the highest level of qualifications and this is balanced with the opportunity to develop the
character that they need to be successful in life. We call this EBHS Life.
All of our teachers are subject specialists who have a passion for their subjects and for working with the
young people at EBHS.

The Academic Curriculum
Before joining…
We work closely with our feeder primary schools to ensure the transition into EBHS is smooth and
learning can continue at a fast pace. Children from our primary schools regularly visit us for curriculum
days in a wide variety of subjects. In addition, our Pastoral Team works closely with Year 6 teachers to
ensure that children are well looked after as they start their time with us at EBHS.
During Years 7 to 9…
Our students study the full range of subjects in Years 7 to 9, including English, maths, science, the
arts, PE, technology, humanities and languages. All students study both French and German before
specialising in one language in Year 9 which they can then choose to study at GCSE level.
During Years 10 and 11…
Our curriculum is tailored to the needs of the individual student and provides the widest choice of
subjects possible, whether this is an academic pathway or a more practical route. Students select from
a wide range of subjects that reflect their own particular strengths and interests. At the heart of our
curriculum is the desire for our students to achieve the very highest level of success.
Beyond EBHS…
In addition to securing the best academic qualifications, we also encourage students to develop the skills
which will allow them to move into the next stage of their education. We work with a range of providers
including Suffolk One, Colchester Sixth Form College, Suffolk New College and Colchester Institute as
well as other schools in the area. Many of our students move onto higher education or apprenticeships.

EBHS Life
Developing a strength of character is essential for success in later life. Our “EBHS Life” programme
aims to do just that. When our students leave us at the end of Year 11, they can demonstrate how
their skills have developed following the ‘LORIC’ attributes of Leadership, Organisation, Resilience,
Initiative and Communication. To achieve this, our students enjoy a huge range of extra-curricular
opportunities, including:
Sports
Our students have the opportunity to participate in traditional school sports such as netball, football
and rugby and some more unusual sports such as handball, trampolining and futsal. We enjoy an
unenviable record of sporting success in local, regional and national competitions and many of our
alumni are competing at a professional level.
Cultural
Our students are involved in the school choir, orchestra, a wide range of musical groups and our
drama department regularly stage school productions such as Oliver, Pendragon and Return to the
Forbidden Planet.
Social
We have a flourishing Duke of Edinburgh scheme with over [30] students successfully gaining their
bronze award each year. We also run chess, Young Enterprise and highly successful robotics clubs.
Visits
Students have the opportunity to enrich their lives by attending a vast array of trips and visits.
We regularly visit theatres, exhibitions, art galleries as well as destinations further afield such as our
annual ski trip, WW1 Battlefields, various sporting tours and our Poland trip, during which students
visit the concentration camps at Auschwitz.

A place to thrive
EBHS is a school where children thrive. We pay meticulous attention to ensuring they are safe and well
cared for. Children who feel safe are happy, and happy children thrive.
Caring for your children
Every child is allocated a Tutor and a Year Leader who look after their day-to-day needs and are their
most important adult in school. When they need a little bit more care or support, our Student Support
Area is on hand to help.
Students with additional needs
We are a fully inclusive school and believe that all students, regardless of their individual needs, have
the right to an excellent education. Our Inclusive Learning Team provides an exceptional level of support
to both students and their parents to allow them to thrive at EBHS.
Making good choices
Our children are offered expert advice whenever they make a decision about their future. Whether this
is deciding on the best courses to study into Year 10 and 11 or considering opportunities beyond EBHS,
we are with them every step of the way. We have a trained careers advisor and offer every opportunity
for students to experience the world of work in many different ways.
Pushing the limits...
Every child is pushed to explore the limits of their ability. We are a member of the National Association
for Able Children in Education (NACE). Students who are more able are challenged within the classroom
by our skilled teachers and also encouraged to become involved in further opportunities such as the
UK Mathematics Challenge, robotics, creative writing and Young Enterprise.

A strong community
At EBHS, we work together to build a stronger community both within the school gates and beyond. We do
this by being kind and positive, celebrating and embracing diversity and aspiring to be the best we can be.
Student Leadership
EBHS students have a say in how their school is run. Our Student Council takes an active part in the
decision making process and represents the views of their peers. Our team of prefects are the figure
heads of the school community, supporting younger students and representing the school at public
occasions. There are opportunities for student leadership throughout the entire school.
Helping and supporting one another
Our SOS Peer Mentoring scheme allows older students to help younger students with a range of issues
that they may face at secondary school. From homework to friendship issues, they are always there to
support.
Working with parents
Communication is a two way thing. We strive to keep parents informed of their child's progress and
homework via our online platform. We deliver a weekly newsletter that celebrates the success of students
and keeps parents informed of what is happening at school. We also endeavour to consult with parents
and seek their views on changes to the school via parent forums or surveys.
Our very active School Association helps to raise money for school projects and also runs a uniform
swap-shop.
