THE LADY BIRD CHAPTER, RECOGNIZES ITS 

SENIOR CLASS FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN 2021 

National Charity League, Inc., Lady Bird Chapter, proudly honored 22 

members of the Class of 2021 during Senior Presentation on Sunday, March 

7, 2021 at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square. The Lady Bird Chapter 

recognized these 22 wonderful young ladies for their accomplishments 

achieved over the last six years in NCL, Inc. These young ladies, along with 

their mothers, have volunteered more than 9,405 hours of philanthropic 

service to their community over the past six years! 

They have served in a variety of leadership positions, along with planning 

events and attending various cultural events. Additionally, they have 

made lasting relationships and memories within their community, 

organization and mostly with their mothers. The Lady Bird Chapter’s total 

philanthropy hours this year have surpassed 7,447 hours in community 

service. National Charity League, Inc (NCL, Inc.) is a national nonprofit 

mother-daughter service organization.

A summer kids’ event called Treasured VBS will be hosted at Family Life 

Assembly of God, 24911 Roesner Road, Katy from Monday, June 14 th to 

Thursday, June 17 th . At Treasured, kids discover God’s greatest treasure 

isn’t diamonds, gems or gold - it’s them! Kids participate in memorable 

Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building 

games, experience one-of-a-kind Bible Adventures, collect Bible Memory 

Buddies to remind them of God’s love and test out Sciency-Fun Gizmos 

they’ll take home and play with all summer long. Plus, kids will learn to 

look for evidence of God all around them through something called God 

Sightings. Each day concludes with the Closing Quest that gets everyone 

involved in living what they’ve learned. Kids at Treasured VBS will join a 

mission project effort to provide mosquito nets for draping over beds to 

protect kids while they sleep. The nets will be distributed all over the worldwherever 

mosquitoes may carry malaria. Treasured is for kids from 3 years 

old and toilet trained to kids who just finished 5 th grade and will run from

Howdy! Our names are Kai, Cazden, Robbie and Jack, we are four SLHS Alumni 

and Texas Film School Graduates. For the past year we have been creating 

Katy’s newest and only Animation and Filmmaking camp, Creator Camp! Our 

goal is to share with students the wonders of film and animation without the 

dullness of note taking and lectures. We designed our 3-day camps so that 

students will learn hands-on and in real-time, creating Special effects, Green 

Screen effects, Sound effects and loads more. Each day, students will come 

home with a new movie they created themselves and on the last day we will 

transform a classroom into a mock Oscars Film Festival where your child will 

pick their favorite film that they made to be shown on the big screen! We are 

running our first camps this summer and we would love to have some support 

from the local community to get us off to a good start. Camps are held at 

Mirus Academy Katy, 5561 3 rd St, Katy, TX 77493 and Each camper will receive 

a free shirt and goody bag. Two Sessions will be held this summer: 

Session 1: June 28 th -30 th : 8:30 AM-3:30 PM

AFA SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL SESSIONS 

The AFA Summer Music Festival offers intensive music-making 

experiences and camaraderie in a supportive environment for Houston’s 

young musicians and has been a part of the community for over 25 

years. Led by renowned faculty artists who are outstanding performers 

and educators, students make noteworthy progress - both individually 

and in ensembles - that will impact their lives as they continue to grow 

as musicians. The Summer Music Festival offers programs for musicians 

in grades 3-12 that last from 1-5 weeks, including large and small 

ensembles, technique classes, masterclasses, studio classes, sectional 

rehearsals music theory, ear training, and other enrichment studies. On 

top of the musical skills and knowledge gained, students also benefit 

from the diverse group of young musicians from across the Greater

For the second year, Crime Stoppers of Houston will reveal the winner 

of the Dave Ward Media Excellence Award. This unique award will honor 

an entity or individual who has exhibited media excellence and will be 

selected by Houston’s Media Icon Dave Ward himself, along with support 

from a small committee of his constituents at Crime Stoppers of Houston. 

For 40 years, Crime Stoppers of Houston has focused on solving crime

activity by preventing it through educational community programming. 

The non-profit, which fundraises year-round will directly benefit from

Fresh Fruit Cobbler 

You could make this on National Eat What You Want Day May 11th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 cup sliced fresh peaches 

3/4 cup peeled, cored and sliced apple 

3/4 cup peeled, cored and sliced pear 

1/2 cup blueberries 

1/2 cup pitted and sliced cherries 

1/2 cup pitted and sliced plums 

1 egg 

3/4 cup white sugar 

1/4 cup milk 

1 cup all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon baking powder 

1/2 teaspoon salt 

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 

2 tablespoons butter, melted 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 2 quart baking 

dish. Arrange the peaches, apple, pear, blueberries, cherries and plums in 

the prepared baking dish. In a medium bowl, beat egg, sugar and milk. 

In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt; stir into 

the egg mixture. Stir in vanilla and melted butter. Cover the fruit with the 

batter mixture. 

Bake 30 minutes in the preheated oven. Cobbler should be bubbly and 

lightly browned. Serve warm.

INGREDIENTS: 

8 ounces cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined 

1 avocado, peeled, pitted and diced 

1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped 

1/4 cup orange-flavored carbonated beverage 

3/4 cup ketchup 

1 (4 ounce) packet saltine crackers 

DIRECTIONS: 

Chop the shrimp into smaller pieces and transfer to a bowl. Stir 

in the avocado and cilantro. In a separate bowl, stir together 

the orange soda and ketchup until the foaming stops. Pour 

over the shrimp mixture and toss to coat. It should be soupy. 

Refrigerate for about 30 minutes to blend the flavors before 

serving with saltine crackers.

May Gardening Tips 

Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are 

growing fast. Here are some tasks to keep your landscape 

beautiful and productive: 

Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and 

annuals including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, 

lobularia, sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados, 

duranta and bat-faced cuphea. 

Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery 

plants, okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, 

pumpkins, basil, peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic 

chives and Malabar greens. If you don’t want to dedicate an 

area of your yard, consider planting here and there in your 

flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular new trend! 

Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge 

or straight sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help 

you know how long to run your irrigation system to apply 

1/2”. 

Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young

Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer

Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/

Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than 

frequent light sprinkling. 

Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean 

bird feeders! Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating 

mosquito breeding spots.
