“Knock on the door before you come in”DATA PROTECTIONThis drawing is based on a photo, taken in September 2020,that was shared with us by our partners from DevelopmentWorkshop. It encapsulates one of the ethical challengesthat we face in this project: the need to respect andprotect Syrian refugees’ privacy and boundaries of intimacy.Publishing ethnographic data about refugees’ work in theinformal economy may put them at risk of prosecution byhost country authorities and provoke acts of retaliationfrom agricultural intermediaries and employers. Fromprevious research, we also know that Syrian women areoften uncomfortable with sharing pictures and videos ofthemselves with researchers, especially men. Instead ofsharing ethnographic data with the wider public, they formthe basis for this graphic novel. To protect the identityof our interlocutors, names have been changed and somecharacters have been conflated.
