GREAT BRITAIN HOCKEY “The Stick It To Racism campaign kickstarted before our Pro League games in October/November last year. Both squads released a joint statement on social media where we outlined our commitment to raising support to tackle discrimination and racism in our sport and show our dedication to helping make a change. That initial statement was just something in terms of outwardly showing our support to the issue around racism, not only within our sport but within society. For us as a squad, this is about creating meaningful change and really building on that movement for change that started last summer after the death of George Floyd and building on that within our sport. As a squad we feel very strongly about this. We think it’s really important to recognise what’s happening within society and that we need to do more. Through the Stick It To Racism campaign, as a squad we’ve continued our education through numerous workshops with many different people such as Maggie Alphonsi, the England Rugby legend, and Rosie Sykes, England and GB’s first ever black hockey player. Just having those really engaging conversations was important for us because we needed to listen first and foremost and continue that learning. I think Stick It To Racism is a really powerful campaign and us as a squad and wider hockey family can build on that and help make a real difference. In our Pro League matches this May you’ll see the Stick It To Racism and NHS logos on both the men’s and women’s playing shirts, it’ll also be on some sticks too which are really simple things that we’re doing to show our support. Moving forward we want to move with purpose and really commit to the change we want to make. Whether that be shining a light on many diverse stories within our hockey family and celebrating all “We think it’s really important to recognise what’s happening within society and that we need to do more” backgrounds, ethnicities, and sexualities across the board within our sport. Primarily, we want to make our sport even more inclusive and celebrate the diversity within it and make our sport something which every single member of our hockey family is proud to be part of.” Emily Defroand 26
GREAT BRITAIN HOCKEY Sam Ward... Thank you NHS “Through these Pro League matches in May we’ll be wearing a logo on our kit thanking the NHS for all that they’ve done. For me and everyone else in the squad, the NHS offers so much support to so many and I think that our thanks with the use of the logo includes absolutely everyone in the UK. No matter who or what we are, we’ve all been looked after by the NHS at some point and I think that is often taken for granted. We felt the logo was especially important with the pandemic and what an incredible job they’ve done. It’s only fair that we show our support as much as we can because they’ve done what can only be described as a thankless job out there for so long. This is our way of showing how much we appreciate the fantastic job every single person has done. We wanted to get across our gratitude, how much they mean and how we realise what they do for us on a day to day basis. For me this means even more because they looked after me through the whole eye incident which was all done on the NHS. It’s very close to my heart and as a squad we’re keen to show our appreciation because with the pandemic they’ve saved many lives and are a true inspiration. If we could give a message to the NHS I’d say that from us as a squad you’ve been absolutely incredible and you are the real life heroes out here right here and now and we’re so thankful for all you’ve done.” 27
