He looked around and felt alone. He washungry and uncomfortable. The cheat grassseeds hurt and his ankles itched painfully.When he got back in the car, his motherwas dozing in her seat. She woke up, blew hernose, and offered him a smushed peanut buttersandwich.Then she started the engine and they droveslowly out, night coming down on them as theyhit the asphalt highway.
Some hours later, they were again drivingdown a dirt road off the highway, this timefollowing a sign to Crystal Crane Hot Springs. Itwas a last-minute find and his mother had at firstdriven past, but then turned around. There wereno motels for miles. Too late to camp and theywere both tired. The interior of the car was amess.“We’ll never be able to find things in therein this pitch dark,” his mother said, meaning thebackseat and trunk. “Honey, why don’t we justtry this place and see?”
