A flood lamp teaming with moths sparkledon the dark water. Bats whooshed back andforth. Overhead stretched the Milky Way.“Swim at Your Own Risk,” a sign read. Hewas glad to be swimming, though this differedfrom the pristine chlorinated pool back home atthe Recreational Center. Here, it looked slimy inspots. The water had a chalky taste and smelledlike rotten eggs.
Across the pool, hanging on to a woodenwalkway, two other people were treading waterand drinking beer. The man was big and talking,and the woman was buxom and giggling.The dark water and the whole sceneseemed kind of weird.His mother, who had sent him ahead toexplore, now came up enveloped in a towel. Shehad brought an extra towel for him.He stoked out to the middle, feeling thejiggling of the goggles around his neck.“Put ‘em on, you might want to see thebottom,” she encouraged.“It’s too muddy,” he said.Then, he was shocked to hear a rumblingvoice apparently addressing him. “You, boy!
