HANGING ART
We have worked hard to develop a slightly different format for a regional fine art event.
We designed it to favor the artist and attract as many visitors as possible.
The presentation of the SLOPOKE Fine Art of the West Exhibition to the public is
meant to convey the professionalism and quality that one experiences in a Museum fundraising
art event or exhibition.
We recommend that you NOT over-crowd your wall with too much art at one time.
Make an attractive arrangement or composition of the art on the wall.
Wire your art. Use at least two 2-nail hooks (provided) to safely bear the weight of
your art. Do not use other fasteners.
BE AWARE that another artist’s work is on the other side of the wall when
hammering – either take it down and re-hang it when you are done or have somebody
guard it to prevent it from being knocked off the wall. Be careful around sculpture.
Names on Wall and Price Tags are provided to achieve a uniform appearance.
Please wear your name tag so people know who to ask about art.
The Floor Plan utilizes random walls because customers often feel confined or
uncomfortable going into a booth. No tables or chairs by wall to maintain a clean
presentation. Likewise, no brochures or business cards on the wall. Have them in your
possession to give to customers or on the Literature Table by Admissions.
MARKETING YOUR ART
SELLING YOUR ART: Be friendly and relaxed. Greet People with a smile. If you see
someone looking at your art, approach them and introduce yourself. Here’s an easy
conversation starter: “ Hi! I’m Art Painter. You know, here’s what I was thinking when I
painted (or sculpted) that…” You’ll sell your art more readily when you have a
conversation with an interested buyer. They want to hear from you. Don’t let them
move on through shyness. Talk with them.
Many people at trade shows of any type feel that they are going to be attacked with an
aggressive sales pitch. A relaxed customer is more likely to buy. Be attentive when you
see they are interested in your work. Proactively approach them, make a friendly
introduction of yourself, and have an immediate opening line in mind such as: “ Why I
paint subjects this is because…”or “As the artist, what this is all about is…”
LITERATURE: There will be a Literature Table in the Lobby. There may be issues of
Western Art and Architecture and Art of the West Magazines for SLOPOKE Visitors.
Artists may also place their literature, such as business or promotional cards there for
customers to take. SLOPOKE Catalogs will be given to Ticket Holders/Purchasers.
Trade Shows / Art Fairs are hard work. Like a Museum, we do not allow
chairs and tables up against the art walls. When you are resting around the periphery, be
attentive to who is looking at your art. If you need a break, take one. Take a walk
around the building or the neighborhood. Let someone know how to get hold of you if a
customer comes for you. Sit and talk or paint on the periphery. Try NOT to look bored
or lounge in a public place.
On the spot pricing or negotiation is entirely up to the artist. We know you will do
very well! Our advice: Don’t let ego get in the way of a sale. SOLD at a lower price is
better than not sold at all and carting it home.
Work the Show. Enjoy the Show. We have worked since January to pull it all
together. We want it to be successful for you the artists because only then can it be
successful for us. We ask that you give it your full cooperation to maintain the quality
image we strive to project.
Your art looks more appealing in a clean and professional presentation. Remember the
most impressive art show you have ever attended and please help us make this one even
better.
PRICING
Have a spread of prices from entry level (low) to appropriate for your best work. At
recent SLOPOKEs, $450 to $6500 was the effective range. Some artists believe
that their lesser work will sell if they price it low. Our observations are that an
artist’s best work will attract a sale even if the customer needs to stretch - so long
as the price doesn’t make them stretch too far. Today the sweet spot, where the
largest number of paintings sell, ranges from $2000-2500. SLOPOKE customers
seek interchange with the artist. Your prices are printed on paper not chiseled in
stone. We expect you to negotiate with a buyer to reach a reasonable and
mutually satisfactory price. We want you to sell. We will help you sell. This is your
show. Don’t place any artificial barriers to success.
WHAT IS ENTREPRISE, LLC?
! Embarking on a fine art business as a Public Art event, we decided to
organize as a limited liability company in 2016
! We named it ENTREPRISE, LLC – a conflation of the words
“entrepreneurial” and “enterprise” as a mnemonic that we are an
entrepreneurial art enterprise.
! As ENTREPRISE, LLC. we operate as 3 independent business units:
o SEASIDE GALLERY – retail fine art / artist representation
o SLOPOKE Events – public fine art events of museum quality
o DIGIMAGINATION – a new word to describe our photography, gicleé
printing, art imaging, advertising, and video product efforts
! At the end of the day, we are still just Tom & Sherie Burgher.
8 x 8 WALL LAYOUT GRID
Create rectangles of your art size(s) to the approximate scale of this grid
e.g. 9x12; 16x20, 18x24, 30x40, 48x60 etc. Cut them out and
move them around to create an uncluttered hanging diagram.
Bring this with you to expedite getting you are hung.
