Planning for another safe and successful summer camp
The past year has been the most trying and
difficult year for most of the young school age
children. They have had to adapt and learn
how to attend school virtually, how to stay
connected with peers and how to wear masks. The
children have had to learn new vocabulary like
“quarantine,” “isolation” and “social distancing.”
Things that shouldn’t even come across children’s
minds at that age.
During all of this, the Sam Pomeranz Jewish
Community Center has tried to remain a needed
constant in the children’s lives. We know the
importance of recreational programming for
school age children. The children need it not only
so parents can attend work but for their social and

emotional wellbeing. Children need to be
able to interact, play and engage with others
their own age. It is not only needed to help
foster and develop social emotional skills
but to help with regulating their feelings.
Last year, the JCC’s Camp Joe & Lynne
Romano was open for seven wonderful
weeks. We worked diligently with the
Onondaga Department of Health, the CDC
and state licensors to come up with not only
a required plan and protocol but what could
be the best practice in keeping everyone safe
and healthy.
“A lot of work went into the planning
and training to be able to implement a program

Our Jewish Community Center—Strength & Resilience
May 2021
Dear Friends,
In this second year of COVID the Sam Pomeranz Jewish
Community Center has made the difficult decision not to hold
our in-person Gala/Annual Meeting.
Our annual business meeting is not only historical in
nature—this is our 159th year—but also poignant as we honor
community leaders who have dedicated themselves to service
to their Jewish community. The hard reality is that this event
is the largest fundraiser for the Jewish Community Center. The
proceeds from this event support the many scholarships that
we give to children and their families for early childhood care,
school-age programming, summer camps and senior adults. To
do without the dollars generated by this event is difficult and may
have serious consequences. We have reached this decision based
on our obligation and commitment to keep our community safe.
We miss the camaraderie and support these events provide. We
have vigorously debated the pros and cons of holding some type
of event: virtual meeting or a non-event-event, ad book or just a
much smaller event?
Our Community has been very generous to us this past year
whether continuing to pay tuition while we were closed, buying
Super Bowl squares, or contributing to our end-of-year campaign.
How do we come to you and ask you for still more? We know
you are supporting us because of the excellence of our programs
and how desperately they were missed for the two months
that we were closed. We know that this support came from an
understanding of our importance to your community! We are the
central address, the town square so to speak.
So, there you have it, our final ask for this fiscal year. If
you have given to us for our Annual Meeting/Gala in previous
years, whether as a sponsor, table host or by taking an ad in
our ad book, we ask for your support again. We will of course
acknowledge your support publicly in our community and on our
website.
This past year has been a lesson about strength and resilience
of community. The lesson learned this year was the lesson of
strength we gather when we stand together shoulder to shoulder
and support each other. We must never forget that we are the
beneficiaries of those leaders who came before us and that it is
our responsibility to be the trustees for those who will stand in
our place.
Sincerely,
Marci Erlebacher

Welcome JCC Members
The 2021 outdoor
swimming season
is finally here! Our
outdoor heated
pools are a great
gathering place
for members to
cool off, relax and exercise—even during
the pandemic! Like last summer, we’ll
have various changes and protocols in
place to help ensure your health and
safety. Although things may not be fully
back to “normal” this summer, we are
confident that you will still have plenty of
opportunities to enjoy the water and sun.
Once again this year our top priority is
to run the pool in the safest way possible.
Pool capacity and hours will again be
adjusted to accommodate current health
regulations. As of right now the following
health and safety protocols will be in place.
• Please make your pool reservations in
advance. Visit www.bit.ly/resjccsyr to
make a reservation.
• When you come to the pool we will
ask you some basic health screening
questions. If you are sick, feel ill or
have symptoms of COVID-19, please
do not come to the JCC.
• Social distancing with lounge chairs/
tables to keep families separate.
• Cleaning of chairs/equipment in
between reservations.
• Specific times for semi-private and
private swim lessons so there will
be no mixing with recreational
swimming.
• Group swimming lessons will not be
offered again this year.
Should health regulations be relaxed
this summer we will re-evaluate our
health/safety protocols and make
adjustments accordingly.
Make the most of your membership by
using the pool to its fullest this summer.
Come swim after work, on weekends
with family and friends or after morning
workouts. Incorporating the pool into your
personal fitness training will add a new
dimension to your exercise routine.
Because the JCC pool is a membersonly
benefit, please remember to bring
your membership card to the pool and
check-in at the lifeguard desk upon
entering the pool area. If you have any
questions regarding the pool, please
contact us at 315-445-2360. Thank you for
being a JCC of Syracuse member. We hope
to see you pool side!

Summer Camp
• Continued from page 1
the hard work so worthwhile,” said Amy
Bisnett, associate director of children’s
programming. “We had a successful
summer camp and pool season, maybe not
for the bottom line of our agency but for
the wellbeing of children and staff.”
Planning for 2021 Camp Romano
began almost immediately after the camp
season ended last year. There were plans in
place to bring even more of our specialty
camps and activities back. Again, our
goal is to remain as safe as possible while
offering a top-of-the-line camp experience.
This past year we have learned a lot and
are excited for summer to begin. Word
must have gotten out on how successful
Camp Romano was last year as enrollment
for this summer is breaking records. We
have more specialty camps full or close to
filling up with waitlists. Some of this is
due to more campers registering and some
is due to the limit on group size that the
Onondaga County of Health still has in
place due to COVID.
Another positive for the JCC is that
staff will be required to get vaccinated.
“The JCC knows how important it is
for our staff to be fully immunized to
help protect themselves and the children
and members of
our facility. We
are excited and
encouraged as all JCC
staff are or will be
fully vaccinated,” says
Marci Erlebacher,
JCC executive
director.
The pandemic
might have disrupted
many plans but the
JCC has adapted and
enhanced what they
can offer. It is now
more important than
ever that we come
together and keep the wellbeing of all at
the forefront of the JCC.
Registration for the JCC of Syracuse’s
2021 Camp Romano is happening now.
The JCC’s summer day camp
will run weekdays for eight
weeks from June 28 through
August 20. Like last year, this
year’s summer camp will serve
both preschool and schoolage
children only. The JCC’s
SyraCruisin’ teen travel camp
and other teen programs are
currently not scheduled to
run this summer because of
continued coronavirus health
and safety guidelines.
Like last year, the JCC’s Camp Romano
will feature curbside drop-off and pickup
of campers, small group sizes and no
commingling of camp groups. Campers
age two and older must wear a mask or
cloth face covering while indoors, although
accommodations will be made based on
each child’s abilities. Easily accessible
outdoor and indoor handwashing stations
will again be available this summer.
Campers will also be provided individual
baskets to use onsite to keep their
belongings together yet separate from
others.
Current JCC membership or program
enrollment is not necessary for a child
to attend Camp Romano. Registration
this year is filling up quickly and many
school-age specialty camps are already
full. However, should health regulations be
relaxed this summer we will look to make
adjustments accordingly.

abide by its rules and bylaws. I understand that all
members 18 years and older may participate in the
JCC’s annual meeting.
I understand that membership dues are payable in full

commitment. If paying by monthly automatic payments
from a credit card, I authorize the JCC of Syracuse to
automatically charge my credit card account for each
consecutive month of the plan.
I understand that membership dues are automatically
renewed each year unless I give notice in writing.
